ABSTRACT

Background: Dental caries is the most prevalent disease in humans, especially during early childhood. The restoration of such an extensive carious lesion should be done properly to reestablish their anatomy and hence their masticatory, phonetic, esthetic, and space-maintainer functions in the dental arches. Composite resins are the most commonly used tooth-colored restorative material, but many difficulties occur particularly when used directly in posterior restorations. The objective of the study was to compare the clinical effectiveness of the Modified Open Sandwich Technique and Conventional Composite Resin Restoration for managing class II caries on primary molars. Material & Methods: This was a randomized control trial and was conducted in the Department of Pedodontics, Faculty of Dentistry, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU), Dhaka, Bangladesh during the period from October, 2021 to September, 2022. In our study we included 68 patients with proximal dental caries of primary molars with reversible pulpitis. The patients were divided by using random sampling technique into two groups – Group A (The modified open sandwich technique, n=34) and Group B (The conventional composite resin restoration, n=34). Results: In total 68 patients from both the groups completed the study. In our study we found mean±SD of age was 5.37±1.24 years. 76.5% of cases of the modified open sandwich technique restorations were & 82.4% of the conventional composite resin restoration were < 6 years. Mandibular primary molars were 64.7% and 53% for the modified open sandwich technique and conventional composite resin restoration respectively. Conventional composite resin restorations showed 32.4% postoperative sensitivity and the modified open sandwich technique restorations showed 11.8%. After 12 months of follow-up, no secondary caries developed. Good marginal adaptation in 100% of cases were found in the modified open sandwich technique and 88.2% for conventional composite restorations. Conclusion: In our study we found that postoperative sensitivity developed more in conventional composite restorations in comparison to the modified open sandwich technique. Initially marginal adaptation showed better in the modified open sandwich method technique. So, conventional and modified open sandwich composite resin techniques were acceptable for primary molar teeth considering secondary caries and marginal adaptation

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT Objective: To analyze the variations of hard palate volume in adults with normal occlusion and different facial types and patterns, by using a three-dimensional analysis on digital casts. Methods: The dental casts of 70 Caucasian adults (28 men, 42 women), mean age of 16.4 years (SD 1.3 years), were scanned by using a tridimensional scanner (Delcam PowerSHAPE™, 2010, Birmingham, UK). Close points were selected in the gingival and cervical regions on the lingual surface of the maxillary teeth, to analyze palatal morphology. The facial patterns and types, and the measurements (width, length, height, volume) of the space on the hard palate were compared using analysis of covariance (ANCOVA), with age as the covariate, and sex as the independent variable. The significance level of 5% (p < 0.05) was adopted. Results: This study showed that the measurements of the width and length were similar among the mesofacial, dolichofacial and brachyfacial facial types, although the height and volume of the space on the hard palate were slightly smaller in dolichofacial individuals, and both Pattern I and Pattern II individuals showed no significant changes for the four measurements. The mean values among facial patterns were: Pattern I - width 38.31±2.59 mm; length 37.44±2.42 mm; height 17.03±2.42 mm and volume 10.52±1.72 mm3; Pattern II - width 37.48±2.44 mm; length 37.48±2.44 mm; height 16.79±2.42 mm and volume 10.41±1.65 mm3 (p>0.05 for all variables). Conclusion: There were no significant differences for the facial patterns and facial types of the individuals compared in the analyzed sample.

ABSTRACT

SUMMARY: Enlarged palatine tonsils and adenoids are thought to cause obstruction of the upper airway, triggering changes in breathing patterns, which in turn lead to dentofacial alterations, including malocclusions. The object of the present study was to correlate the size (grade) of the palatine tonsil with measurements of the maxillary and mandibular dental arches in children. This was an observational cross-sectional study carried out in 35 children aged between 6 and 11 years. The inter- and intra-arch parameters were measured (horizontal, vertical and sagittal analyses) by making plastercasts and then taking measurements with callipers. The tonsil size was classified in 5 grades from 0-4, using the Brodsky tonsil grading scale. The researcher was calibrated prior to carrying out the measurements. Pearson's chi-squared test was used and Pearson's correlation coefficient was calculated. The SPSS v.22.0 software was used, with a significance threshold of 5 %. Six patients were classified as grade 1, sixteen grade 2, eleven grade 3, two grade 4 and none of the patients presented grade 0.A low positive association was found between tonsil grade and the total length of the mandibular arch, a very low positive association between tonsil grade and maxillary inter-first premolar distance, total length of the maxillary arch and depth of the palatine recess.A very low negative association was found for tonsil grade and overjet, overbite, mandibular inter-permanent first molar distance, mandibular inter-first premolar distance, and mandibular and maxillary intercanine widths. No statistically significant correlation was observed for any of the measurements. No association was found between the tonsil grade and Angle's Classification, canine relationship, overjet and overbite. According to the results of this study there is no significant correlation between the dental arches and the tonsil grade.

ABSTRACT

Introduction: The arches of the feet are important in protecting the internal structures of the body from impactforces while it mainly helps in transferring the internal forces to the ground and are also involved in lifting thebody weight and mainly shock absorption With respect to the medial longitudinal arch some prominent deformitiescan be observed - high arch i.e., Cavus foot and low arch i.e., flat foot also known as Pes planus. The deformitiesare responsible for inefficient transmission of forces leading to foot diseases. Objectives: The present study is an attempt to know the effect of body mass index on plantar arches. This is usefulin creating awareness about the plantar arch deformities and the cause for the deformity. The parameters usedin measuring the plantar arch height are Staheli’s plantar arch index and arch angle.Methodology: Over the course of two months study was conducted on 106 subjects within the age group of 18-22years. Body Mass Index of the subjects are calculated using height and weight of the subject. Plantar archindex and arch angle were classified underOne wayANOVA test and chi square test. Measurement of the plantararch index is done by using Staheli’s arch index and arch angle will be done by using foot print method. Conclusion: In this study it is shown that BMI is significantly associated with Arch index and Arch angle. Archindex is significantly higher in obese and overweight subjects than underweight and normal subjects. Arch angleis significantly higher in underweight and normal subjects than obese and overweight subjects. In the presentstudy by comparing overweight and obese subjects with underweight and normal subjects, the obese andoverweight subjects are more prone to have flatfoot.

ABSTRACT

In compressed dental arches with mild to moderate crowding, space can be gained during the alignment phase to help improve tooth location. The aim of this study was to compare transverse measurements before and after the alignment stage in two groups: Group A treated with passive selfligating brackets, (Damon System) and Group B with conventional brackets (Roth philosophy). The change in transverse diameter between teeth was measured on dental casts taken before and after orthodontic alignment. Twenty four patients of both sexes aged 13 to 36 years, with moderate tooth crowding (4 to 6 mm), were treated. They all received treatment at the Department of Orthodontics, School of Dentistry, University of Buenos Aires. Patients were distributed randomly into two groups of 12. No extraction was performed until the end of the alignment. Dental casts were measured before and after alignment. The distance between upper first premolars increased more in Group B (p = 0.008), and the distance between canines was higher in Group B, with statistically significant difference (p < 0.01). Both systems enable tooth alignment by increasing transverse diameter of the arches in patients with mild to moderate crowding. The greatest transversal development occurs in the interpremolar area in both techniques and is significantly higher with selfligating orthodontics. Intercanine distance increases significantly with conventional orthodontics compared to selfligating orthodontics (AU)

ABSTRACT

Introduction: Female reproductive system cancers shorten lifespan in women because of high mortality and morbidity. The detection of pre-invasive and micro-invasive stages makes near 100% survival of cancer patients. Dermatoglyphics is the scientific study of fingerprints. Many genes which take part in the control of finger and palm dermatoglyphic development distinguished cancer patients from the general population. It is possible that these genes also predispose to the development of malignancy. Since many investigations are needed to confirm the diagnosis of cancers, dermatoglyphics can be used as a screening procedure for planning preventive care if a specific pattern is known for a cancer. Aims and Objectives: To analyze the prints of different cancers, to analyze the results, compare with controls and observe the differences in main parameters of dermatoglyphic patterns and to determine a specific pattern for specific cancers. Subjects and Methods: This is a prospective, observational and an analytical study started after the approval by Institutional Ethical Committee of S.V. Medical College, Tirupati. The material for the study consisted of finger and palm prints of outpatients and inpatients of the Department of OBG, Tirupati, Cancer Hospital in and around Tirupati, Nellore and Kadapa. The ink prints of each finger and palm were collected and analyzed. Results: Ridge counts, digital patterns and main line formulae observed in different cancers in the present study were analyzed and presented. Mean TFRC was higher in normal group. Greater AFRC was observed in cancer cervix patients when compared to controls. In the present study, there is no difference (p> 0.05) in a-b ridge count among carcinoma of cervix and control group in both hands. Differences of mean atd, tad and tda angles among the groups are not statistically significant (P>0.05).The most common C-main line termination pattern of cancers are U followed by R and then Ab. IV interdigital area of both hands presented less incidence of loop pattern in cancer cases when compared to normal group. Special findings in respective cancers are discussed separately and they are not found in any other literature. Conclusion: There are very limited studies in literature on dermatoglyphic pattern in female reproductive cancers. Though the cost of prints is less, more time and skilled human resources are required for their analysis. Study sample size of controls and cases to be increased. Public should be enlightened about dermatoglyphics. If large number of studies are done and a specific pattern is established for specific cancers, then it becomes cost-effective to people so that a risk is predicted beforehand in any disease and preventive methods can be employed at an early age as the dermatoglyphic patterns do not change in a life time.

ABSTRACT

The irrigation of the palm is provided by arterial arches (shallow and deep) that are made more frequently by the ulnar or radial arteries described as setting a classic pattern. Anatomical variations are described in shaping both arches, most often in the superficial palmar arch; may be the same complete or incomplete. The objective of this work is the anatomical description of the palmar arches, their different patterns and variations in conformation, and their clinical and surgical implications. A descriptive, observational and morphometric study of the arteries involved in the formation of the palmar arches was done in the Faculty of Medicine, University of Buenos Aires. One hundred 1(00) cadaveric preparations fixed in formalin solution, of the Third Chair of Anatomy were used. A retrospective analysis of cases with lesions / s artery /main / s that make the palmar arches in the Emergency Hospital of Moron, between 2015-2016 s was alsocarried out. Most frequently the radial artery forms the deep palmar arch with the deep palmar branch ofthe ulnar artery. Superficial palmar arch is the most variable. It was complete in 56 % and the most common presentation (83 %) is one that is formed by the anastomosis of the ulnar artery and the superficial palmar branch of the radial artery. The rest of the anastomosis are between ulnar artery and median artery(9%), between deep branch of radial artery and ulnar artery (5 %); triple anastomosis between ulnar artery, median artery and superficial palmar branch of the radial artery (2 %), and anastomosis between the median artery and superficial palmar branch of the radial artery without participation of the ulnar artery (1%). The rest of the sample (44 %) can be termed as incomplete. The B1a and B1b subtypes were the mostfound. Two cases, one entire section of the radial artery at the wrist and the other with complete section ofulnar artery with involvement of the ulnar nerve are described. It is essential to a proper understanding ofthe palmar arches for a suitable surgical approach to hand. The importance of the presence or absence, aswell as different variations of palmar arterial arch lies in its clinical application as surgical starting point in the treatment of trauma and other diseases in which there is engagement of arteries.

ABSTRACT

Background: Malocclusion in the vertical and sagittal planes is easy to observe whereas it is difficult to diagnose malocclusion in the transverse plane. There are yet no criteria defining a normal transverse occlusion. Aim: The aim of this study was to identify a ratio that defines a normal transverse occlusion. Study Design: This was a retrospective study. Materials and Methods: A total sample of 151 maxillary dental models (M = 55, F = 96) in the age range of 12-16 years were randomly selected, with 73 models in control group and 78 in the study group. All the models were mixed up and given to an operator for the measurement of intercanine width (ICW) and inter-palatal molar width (IPMW). Statistical Analysis Used : The data were statistically analyzed using SPSS software version 16.0. Chi-square test was performed to test the statistical significance difference between the groups at p ≤ 0.05. Results: Nearly 98.60% of normal arches were found to have an IPMW to ICW ratio of 1:1 ± 0.05. On further analysis, it was found that when IPMW ≥37.45 mm, then the case may be considered to have normal arches, and if the ratio between IPMW to ICW is 1.15:1 ± 0.05 or more and IPMW is <34.92 mm, then the case may be identified as deficient arch. Conclusion : The IPMW-to-ICW ratio can be used to differentiate deficient and normal arches. This hypothesis (Banker's hypothesis) is an easy and noninvasive method, using only two parameters, developed to help clinicians in identifying normal transverse dimension.

ABSTRACT

Background: In Dermatoglyphics the finger palms and soles elevation pattern are studied. The term dermatoglyphics, the uniqueness of a person’s fingerprints have been thought by some to be fixing to a person’s personality and constructing genetic quality of each individual. Methods: In the present study, 400 students are taken from out of which 200 males and 200 females. Prints are taken and the ridge counts are studied with the help of a magnifying lens. They are identified as: Arches, Loops and Whorls in both genders. The Performa is prepared on a durable A4 sheet divided into five marked areas. The right hand thumb (1) index finger (2) middle finger (3) ring finger (4) little finger (5), followed by the left hand; thumb (6) index finger (7) middle finger (8) ring finger (9), little finger (10). Result: The most common fingerprint patterns in Indian population is loops (both ulnar and radial) (60.65%) followed by whorls (34.7%) and arch (53.5%). The most common fingerprint patterns in Indian males is ulnar loops (55.1%) similarly (64.6%) females had ulnar loops. The percentage of whorls in males and females were 38% and 31.4% respectively. The rarest finger pattern was arch (6%) in males and (4.7%) in females. Conclusion: Dermatoglyphics can play an important role in person identity and gender estimation. Thus this study we prove helpful in forensic science and also in slowing medico legal cases.

ABSTRACT

Objective To improve the prenatal echocardiographic diagnostic accuracy for fetus with isolated mirror-image right aortic arch which combined with vascular ring by analyzing and accumulating its echocardiographic features. Methods Echocardiographic signs were analyzed retrospectively and fetal echocardiographic features were accumulated in 16 cases with prenatal diagnosis of isolated mirror-image right aortic arch with left-side ductus arteriosus which formed vascular ring between January 2014 and February 2016.All cases were confirmed by neonatal echocardiography. Results The fetal echocardiography characters:① In 3-vessel and trachea view, fetal right aortic arch was demonstrated a Ushaped appearance of the great vessels, the right arm of the ‘ U’ represented the aortic arch and its left branch with ductal continuation.② In 3-vessel and trachea view or upper axial mediastinal transverse view, left innominate artery passed straightly to the left of the trachea.Left innominate artery and right-side ductus arteriosus were overlapped and the distance of two vessels was very close.③ In double arch view and longitudinal view for ductus,Left innominate artery did not connect to descending aorta or ductus arteriosus and did not involve in the formation of vascular ring.④ Color Doppler played an important role in diagnosis of this disease.Power Doppler or high-definition imaging easily showed color overflow and wrongly displayed the crossed relationship of left innominate artery with descending aorta as the anatomical connection, and caused the misdiagnosis of this disease as double aortic arch. Conclusions Isolated mirrorimage right aortic arch with vascular ring is not rare in the fetal period.Because ductus arteriosus is large and patent during the prenatal period,it is easily mistaken for the crossed relationship of left innominate artery with descending aorta as the anatomical connection and finally misdiagnoses this anomaly as double aortic arch. The keys to accurate diagnosis of the disease are clearly visualization of the innominate artery and its relationship with descending aorta and ductus arteriosus by scanning different views.

ABSTRACT

Background: Genetic etiology has been proposed for both idiopathic epilepsy and dermatoglyphics. Hence, the present study has been undertaken to find out the existence of any correlation between dermatoglyphics and idiopathic generalized epilepsy. Objective of current study was to find out an association, if any, between dermatoglyphic patterns of hands in idiopathic generalized epilepsy of both sexes. Methods: The study was conducted in the department of anatomy and department of neurology, Himalayan institute of medical sciences, Swami Ram Nagar, Dehradun. Fingertip patterns (whorls, loops, arches) and Main line (A, B, C, D) terminations were analysed by utilizing finger and palmar prints. Results: The present study showed a significant decrease in whorls and an increase in arches in both the hands of male and female IGE patients. Loops were increased in both hands of female patients. Main line D was mostly confined to sectors 11, 9 and 7 in both sexes among the cases and controls. Main line C terminated quite often in sectors 9 & 7 in males and females of the case series. Main line B terminated most frequently in sectors 5'' & 7 in control and case groups. Main line A terminated most frequently in sector 5' in males and females. Conclusion: Therefore, we can conclude and hypothesize merely by observing decrease in the whorl and increase in the arch patterns in the fingerprints (as observed in the present study) that persons with high risk of idiopathic generalized epilepsy can be identified early and preventive measures can be taken against serious complications.

ABSTRACT

This study analyzed the structure of the gill rakers of Parapimelodus valenciennis and Parapimelodus nigribarbis (planktivorous), Serrasalmus maculatus and Hoplias malabaricus (piscivorous), Iheringichthys labrosus (benthophagous) and Hypostomus commersonii (detritivorous) and related it with the body size and feeding habits of these species. The species of Parapimelodus and H. commersonii showed long, filiform and closely spaced gill rakers, similar to those of species that use the gill rakers as a filter to assist in the retention of small particles. The widely spaced gill rakers of I. labrosus probably allow the retention of insect larvae, but not particles of inorganic matter. In H. malabaricus and S. maculatus the gill rakers are most likely related to prey capture and swallowing, as observed in other piscivorous species. In general, gill raker length and the distance between gill rakers have a positive relationship with fish length. The gill rakers show adaptations related to the diet of the fish, but morphological variation may occur even between species whose feeding habits are the same.

ABSTRACT

Introduction: the various phenotypic characteristics may be grouped; also, their individual and collective influence may be determined when defining a biotype. Structural equation modeling (SEM) is based on causal relations so that the change in a variable is supposed to produce a change in another variable. This model was used to validate causal relations using different types of mediating variables: masticatory force, transverse measures, dental arches, bizygomatic width, and morphological face height. Methods: this study included 197 preteens between 12 and 14 years of age with dental neutroclusion, distributed like this: 33% mestizos, 35% of African descent, and 32% indigenous. The hypothetical model was statistically tested through structural equation modeling. Results: the model is well fitted to the data since goodness of fit indicators such as RMSEA = 0.078, RMR index magnitude = 0.061, and CIF = 0.988 were within the expected limits. The parameters were significant to a 5%, except for facial index with masticatory force. Factor loads ranged from 0.55 to 0.92 and negative factor loads between the facial index and dental arch transverse measures (–0.60). Conclusion: this model shows that the variable that best correlates with facial biotype is masticatory force (0.82), followed by dental arches relation (0.73), this being a moderate correlation.

ABSTRACT

Objective: the present work was conducted with the purpose of discussing the performance of the forensic dentist in the criminal scope, with the intention of exposing the academic community to relevant information about this subject. Literature review: the performance of the specialist in forensic dentistry is restricted to analysis, report, and evaluation of events related to the dentist's area of competence, and sections 63 and 64 of Resolution CFO - 63/2005 regulate it. The forensic dentist may perform in the criminal scope, live identification, as well as on the body, and in anthropological reports. The oral cavity has great identification potential and the forensic dentist performance is very important since examining the body through the mouth and dental arches might be essential for the criminal report, hence dental analysis is widely used. Final considerations: the dentist must be careful in keeping medical records, radiographs, and dental casts of patients by writing down all relevant information, for they may be useful in the future for positive identification of victims.

ABSTRACT

The embryonic development of the facial area, neck, nasal, oral and pharyngeal cavities with glands, involves growth and fusion of multi-dimensional processes. There is involvement of elements from the embryo-derived local 3 layers cells further neural crest derived cells from the neighbors rhombomeres. The neural crest cells are involved in the formation of local skeleton, among other structures. The study of evolution from jawless vertebrates shows us how Hox genes are expressed in different species, and how this determines the formation of different structures. The following review contemplate some morphological, molecular and evolutionary basis of facial and neck development, with emphasis on mammals with an epilogue concerning to the face and neck malformations in humans.
