ABSTRACT

Background: Elevated inflammatory biomarkers inMetabolic Syndrome (MetS) are associated withDietary Inflammatory Index (DII), which helps discernthe inflammatory impacts of diet and hence the risk ofCardiovascular Diseases (CVD) in MetS. Aim andObjectives: To assess the association between DIIscores and different components of MetS. To discernthe degree of association between the dietaryinflammatory potential and different components ofMetS using the DII score specific to this population.Material and Methods: DII scores were calculated in100 MetS participants and the diet was graded frommaximally anti-inflammatory to maximally proinflammatory. Data were represented as mean ± standarddeviation and compared using correlation coefficientand chi-square test. Results: DII scores were partiallycorrelated with triglycerides (TG; P = 0.279) in the firstquartile, with systolic blood pressure (P = 0.145) in thesecond, with High Density Cholesterol (HDL) in thethird (P = - 0.0001), and with Triglycerides (TG)(P = 0.139) and diastolic blood pressure (P = 0.203) inthe fourth quartile. Conclusion: The results reflect therole of diet in regulation of inflammation and areimperative to transform to a low inflammatory,antioxidant-rich diet to lower CVD risk.

ABSTRACT

Objective: To evaluate the anti-obesity activity of ethanolic extract of cashew apple using various in vitro and in vivo models. Methods: Phytochemical screening was carried out in ethanolic extract of cashew apple, followed by quantification of phenol and flavonoid. Antioxidant potential was evaluated using 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl and 2,2'-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulphonic acid) scavenging assays. The inhibitory effect of ethanolic extract of cashew apple on α-amylase and pancreatic lipase was also studied. In addition, anti-obesity activity was determined in two in vivo models, lipid emulsion model and atherogenic diet-induced obese rat model. Levels of postprandial plasma triglycerides were assessed in lipid emulsion model, whereas serum lipid profile, in vivo antioxidants and histopathological studies of the carotid artery and liver were performed in an atherogenic diet-induced obese model. Results: Phytochemical screening revealed the presence of carbohydrates, alkaloids, polyphenols, terpenoids, and steroids. The in vitro assays showed inhibition of α-amylase and pancreatic lipase and strong antioxidant potential. Ethanolic extract of cashew apple showed significant and time-dependent inhibitory activity on postprandial triglycerides after administration of lipid emulsion for 5 h. Ethanolic extract of cashew apple at 200 and 400 mg/kg on day 60 showed a significant reduction in body weight, body mass index and atherogenic index, whereas lipid profile and liver function marker levels in the serum were decreased in a dose-dependent manner at time intervals (day 0, 20, 40, and 60) compared to the atherogenic diet-induced obese rats. Histological observations showed reduced non-alcoholic fatty liver deposits and decreased atherosclerotic fatty streak plaques (carotid artery) after treatment with ethanolic extract of cashew apple. Conclusions: Ethanolic extract of cashew apple ameliorates obesity, which may be partly mediated by its delayed absorption of cholesterol and carbohydrates.

Introducción: una alimentación muy selectiva y poco variada durante la primera infancia, puede modificar seriamente los índices de riesgo cardiovascular, ante lo cual, la detección de la alteración lipídica es de suma importancia para promover e implementar el cambio de hábitos. Caso clínico: se presenta una niña de 6 años con una dieta a base de alimentos industriales, a quien se le realizó un perfil lipídico, por considerar que la alimentación tan limitada que consumía era un factor de riesgo aterogénico. Esto permitió diagnosticar una marcada disminución del HDL-colesterol, hipertrigliceridemia y franca alteración de los índices de riesgo. Discusión: existe una relación directa entre la hipertrigliceridemia y el consumo de azúcares simples, presentes en las golosinas, postres o gaseosas. Además, las grasas saturadas e industriales (trans) son responsables de la disminución del colesterol HDL. Llamó la atención la contundencia que ejerció la alteración del laboratorio, sobre el accionar de los padres. Luego de 6 meses de poner en práctica las indicaciones, los valores y los índices de riesgo se normalizaron. Conclusiones: se destaca la importancia de realizar un perfil lipídico en niños mayores de 2 años cuando se detecta el consumo de una dieta aterogénica, dado que el descenso de colesterol HDL tiene relación directa con la alimentación y el estilo de vida. Un valor inferior a 45 mg/dL es un factor de riesgo que puede ser modificado(AU)


Introduction: a very selective and little varied diet during early childhood can seriously modify the cardiovascular risk indexes, and because of that the detection of lipid alteration is very important to promote and implement the change of habits. Clinical case: a 6-year-old girl was presented with a diet based on industrial foods. A lipid profile was made considering that the very limited diet she consumed was an atherogenic risk factor. This allowed diagnosing a marked decrease in HDL-cholesterol, hypertriglyceridemia and real alteration in the risk indexes. Discussion: there is a direct relation among hypertriglyceridemia and the consumption of simple sugars, which are present in sweets, desserts or sodas. In addition, saturated and industrial (trans) fats are responsible for lowering HDL cholesterol. It was significant the impact of the alteration in the laboratory results in the actions taken by the parents. After 6 months of putting the indications into practice, the values and risk indexes were normalized. Conclusions: it is highlighted the importance of performing a lipid profile in children older than 2 years when the consumption of an atherogenic diet is detected, since the decrease in HDL cholesterol is directly related to diet and lifestyle. A value below 45 mg/dL is a risk factor that can be modified(AU)

ABSTRACT

To study the efficacy of ethanolic extract of B. monosperma bark in cafeteria and atherogenic diet fed rats and monosodium glutamate (MSG) obese rats, different doses (200, 400 and 800 mg/kg) of ethanolic extract of B. monosperma bark showed dose dependent decrease in body weight, daily food intake, glucose, lipids, internal organs’ weight and fat pad weight in cafeteria and atherogenic diet fed rats and monosodium glutamate obese rats. The results suggested that B. monosperma has significant anti-obese activity.

The present research was made to investigate the potential hypolipidemic effect of Ixora coccinea. Hypolipidemic activity is screened by inducing hyperlipidemia with the help of atherogenic diet in wistar albino rats and serum levels of biochemical parameters such as total cholesterol, triglycerides, LDL, VLDL and HDL cholesterol were determined. Atherogenic index shows the measure of the atherogenic potential of the drugs. Ethanol extract showed significant (p< 0.05) hypolipidemic effect by lowering the serum levels of biochemical parameters such as significant reduction in the level of serum cholesterol, triglyceride, LDL, VLDL and HDL level which was similar to the standard drug Atorvastatin. Ethanol extract exhibited significant atherogenic index and percentage protection against hyperlipidemia. Preliminary phytochemical analysis revealed the presence of phytoconstituents such as alkaloids, tannins, flavonoids, carbohydrates, protein and amino acids and reducing sugars which is further confirmed by HPTLC (high performande thin layer chromatography). The overall experimental results suggests that the biologically active constituents such as flavonoids, alkaloids, tannins and glycosides in the ethanol extract, of Ixora coccinea, may be responsible for the significant hypolipidemic activity and the results justify the use of Ixora coccinea as a significant hypolipidemic agent.

ABSTRACT

This study investigated the effects of freeze-dried cranberry powder on anti-inflammation and lipid profiles of lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-treated rats fed an atherogenic diet for 6 weeks. Forty Sprague-Dawley male rats (6-weeks-old) were equally divided into the following five groups: 1) normal diet group + saline (NC); 2) atherogenic diet + saline (HFC); 3) atherogenic diet + LPS (HL); 4) atherogenic diet with 5% cranberry power + LPS (C5); 5) atherogenic diet with 10% cranberry power + LPS (C10). LPS (0.5 mg/kg) was injected into the abdominal cavities of rats 18 hours prior to sacrifice. At the end of the experimental period, we measured serum lipid profiles as well as levels of serum C-reactive protein (CRP), nitric oxide (NO), and pro-inflammatory cytokines such as tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-alpha), interleukin (IL)-1beta, IL-6, and IL-10 as an anti-inflammatory cytokine. The mean serum high density lipoprotein (HDL)-cholesterol level in C5 rats was significantly higher than that in NC and HL rats (P < 0.05). The mean serum levels of CRP and IL-1beta were significantly lower (P < 0.05) in the cranberry powder groups compared to those in HL rats. Additionally, mean serum IL-6 levels tended to be lower in the cranberry groups than that in the HL group, whereas serum IL-10 and NO showed 29% and 88% higher mean values in the C5 group and 49% and 24% higher in the C10 group than those in the HL group, respectively. These results suggest that freeze-dried cranberry powder may have beneficial effects on cardiovascular diseases by modifying serum lipids and the early inflammatory response.

ABSTRACT

El hígado graso no alcohólico (HGNA), comprende un amplio espectro de lesiones, que van desde esteatosis hepática, hasta cirrosis y carcinoma hepatocelular, siendo sus principales factores de riesgo los desordenes asociados a síndrome metabólico (SM). El propóleos, sustancias resinosa elaborada por Apis mellifera para la protección de la colmena, ha demostrado un efecto hepatoprotector, así el objetivo de esta investigación fue evaluar el efecto de un propóleos chileno sobre el desarrollo de esteatosis hepática no alcohólica en ratones C57BL/6J sometidos a una dieta aterogénica tipo Paigen. Veintiocho ratones (C57BL/6J), divididos en: 1, dieta balanceada (CH); 2, dieta hipercolesterolémica (HC); 3, dieta HC + 10 mg/kg/día de propóleos (BP); 4, dieta HC + 40 mg/kg/día de propóleos (AP). Después de 16 semanas, se determinó la concentración de glucosa, colesterol total, triglicéridos y los niveles de alanina aminotransferasa (ALAT). El tejido hepático fue fijado en una solución de formalina tamponada al 10 por ciento para, posteriormente, ser incluido en paraplast y teñido con Hematoxilina-Eosina y fragmanetos congelados a -30C fijados en formalina teñidos con tinción Oil red O. No existieron diferencias en la concentración de glucosa ni triglicéridos, a diferencia del colesterol total, entre el grupo alimentado con dieta balanceada (CH) y los alimentados con la dieta aterogénica D12336 (HC, BP y AP). De la misma forma se observó que existen diferencias en los niveles de actividad de ALAT entre los grupos estudiados, destacando su reducción en los grupos suplementados con propóleos (BP y AP). De forma concordante, la histoarquitectura del grupo HC, mostró esteatosis simple y focos de infiltrado leucocitario en el lobulillo hepático, observándose una disminución gradual de las alteraciones en los grupos de BP y AP. En conclusión, el propóleos chileno estudiado disminuye la esteatosis hepática inducida por la dieta aterogénica tipo Paigen en ratones C57BL/6J, sin embargo, los mecanismos implicados en esta actividad hepatoprotectora tienen que ser identificados.


Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) covers a wide spectrum of injuries ranging from simple steatosis to cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma. Its main risk factors are disorders associated with metabolic syndrome (MS). Propolis, a resinous substance produced by Apis mellifera to protect is hive, has demonstrated a hepatoprotective effect. Thus, the aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of Chilean propolis on development of nonalcoholic hepatic steatosis in C57BL/6J mice exposed to Paigen atherogenic diet. Twenty eight mice C57BL/6J were divided four groups: 1, balanced diet (CH); 2, hypercholesterolemic diet (HD); 3, HD diet supplemented with 10 mg/kg/day of propolis (LP); 4, HD diet supplemented with 40 mg/kg/day of propolis (HP). After 16 weeks of treatment was determined glucose, total cholesterol and triglycerides concentrations and alanine aminotransferase (ALT) activity. The liver tissue was fixed in 10 percent buffered formalin solution, embedded in paraplast and stained with hematoxylin-eosin. No differences was detected in glucose and triglycerides concentrations, contrasting with total cholesterol levels between group fed with a balanced diet (CH) and feed with atherogenic diet D12336 (HD, LP and HP). In the same way, it was noted differences in ALT activity between groups, standing out the reduction in propolis supplemented groups (LP and HP). Likewise the histoarchitecture of HD group, showed simple steatosis, inflammatory cell infiltration and inflammatory foci in hepatic lobule. This characteristics show a gradual decrease in LP and HP groups. In conclusion, the Chilean propolis analyzed decreases hepatic steatosis induced by atherogenic diet in C57BL/6J mice. However, the involved mechanisms in this hepatoprotective activity must be identified.
