ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT Atta capiguara grass-cutting ants are commonly found in the Cerrado biome, in open fields. Although grass-cutting ants build giant nests, little has been elucidated about this building pattern and when chambers and tunnels emerge. The present study describes the nest architecture development of A. capiguara grass-cutting ants from data on 31 cement-molded nests. A. capiguara nests grow with increases in the number of fungus chambers and emergence and increase of waste chambers and foraging tunnels. The structural growth of A. capiguara nests in the first year and a half of age (18 months) is vertical, with the building of the first chambers in the soil profile. After 18 months, the nests grow sideways with the addition of chambers and tunnels, and the first waste chambers appear. Between 18 and 54 months, the number of fungus chambers increases from 1-3 to 21-32, and the chambers are concentrated at the soil surface, although they can be found more than 3 m deep. In addition, the total volume of the waste chambers increases with the increment in the fungus chambers volume. Thus, this study contributes to understanding the nest architecture development of A. capiguara grass-cutting ants and demonstrates that the total volume of waste chambers is proportional to the total volume of fungus chambers suitable for the colony.

ABSTRACT

Introduction: The genetic variation between island and mainland populations of leaf-cutter ants have been poorly studied, despite its importance to understand their local dispersion, regional structure, and the distribution of one of the most abundant species in the neotropics. Objective: To analyze the genetic variation of an insular population of Atta cephalotes in a larger regional context in Central and South America. Methods: The Cytochrome Oxidase I gene of A. cephalotes was sequenced for the Gorgona Island and mainland populations in order to conduct an analysis of molecular variance, gene flow, and to calculate divergence time of haplogroups occurring in the island. An individual assignment test was conducted to estimate the spatial genetic connectivity and the distribution for this ant in the Eastern Tropical Pacific. Results: A total of 33 samples from the island and the Colombian mainland were compared to 389 Genebank accessions ofA. cephalotes from Central and South America. This leaf-cutter ant in the Gorgona Island is closely related to the Colombian mainland, despite that the separation between the island and the mainland likely constitute a barrier to gene flow. It is likely that two of the most common haplogroups on the continent arrived on the island recently. Therefore, the anthropogenic influence in the process of colonization of the island by this leaf-cutting ant cannot be excluded. A map of connectivity shows that this population has geographic limits that largely overlap with a biogeographic region within the Eastern Tropical Pacific. This trans-andean population accumulates 23 % of the maternally inherited diversity of theA. cephalotes. Conclusions: This leaf-cutter ant in the Gorgona Island and the Colombian Pacific is closely related to the Central American population and the whole region harbor a significant segment of A. cephalotes genetic diversity in South America.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT Leaf-cutting ants are controlled with toxic baits. For the method's greater efficiency, the baits must be distributed and processed by workers during fungus cultivation. To test hypotheses whether the mode of action of the active ingredients, which blocks the sodium channels and interrupts the production of ATP in the mitochondria, interferes with fragment distribution in nests; the dispersion of pellets fragments during fungus cultivation by workers was assessed, spatially referencing the fragment onto the fungus garden. Pellets fragments were randomly distributed, but the amount pellets fragments was influenced by the way that the active ingredient acts in the colony.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT: Atta sexdens rubropilosa (leaf-cutter ants) has a symbiotic association with a fungus and has a negative interaction with other fungi due to parasitism of the fungus cultivated by ants; also, there are several other fungi with no exact known role occurring in their cultivated fungus garden. In the present study, we use the ITS region (internal transcribed spacer) to identify fungi in colonies treated with toxic baits. Experiments using two toxic baits were carried out: 0.75g of sulfluramid [0.3%] and 0.75g fipronil [0.003%]. Samples of fungi were collected and cultured in Czapek medium for seven days to allow fungal growth and subsequent identification. Total DNA was isolated from 100-150 mg of mycelium using the CTAB method and using PCR, with the universal primers (ITS4 and ITS5), to amplify the ITS region. Sequencing was performed using the Sanger method. Sequences were subjected to BLAST, allowing the identification of nine different species of the orders Agaricales, Eurotiales, Hypocreales, Pleosporales, Saccharomycetales and Tremellales showing a variation in identity of 96-100%. Using "The Automatic Barcode Gap Discovery" analysis, nine groups were identified, corresponding to species described in NCBI. The K2P distances were used to generate a tree using Neighbour-joining, demonstrating that the species were grouped according to phylogenetic groups. We concluded that leaf-cutter ant colonies exhibited a wide variety of fungi and this study suggested that there is no correlation between the species of fungi isolated with the control method used on the ant nest.

Empregando a análise "The Automatic Barcode Gap Discovery", identificou-se nove grupos, correspondendo as espécies descritas no NCBI.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT In leafcutter ants the division of labour is associated to worker size variation clustered in four subcastes. In this work we used Atta sexdens Forel (1908) as a model to test the hypothesis that each subcaste expresses its own chemical signature comprised of cuticular lipids. To assess it, we extracted epicuticular compounds by using nonpolar solvent hexane and analysed the samples in a combined Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometer (GC-MS). We found 24 hydrocarbons with carbon chains ranging from 19 to 39 atoms most of them classified as linear and branched alkanes. No compound occurred in the cuticle of specific worker subcaste, however, the relative proportion pattern varied greatly among them. Our results suggest that although subcastes have similar chemical signatures, significant differences in their relative proportions may play an important role between nestmate and group identification.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT: Task partitioning in eusocial animals is most likely an evolutionary adaptation that optimizes the efficiency of the colony to grow and reproduce. It was investigated indirect task partitioning in two castes sizes; this involves task partitioning in which the material transported is not transferred directly from one individual to another, but where it is dropped by one ant to be picked up by another. In two separate approaches, it was confirmed previous results pertaining to leaf caching activities among Atta colombica with task partitioning activities involving leaf dropping among Atta sexdens rubropilosa , in which there is a correlation between the size of an individual ant and the leaf fragment it transports. It was also suggested that this correlation exists only in individual ants that cut and transport (CaT) the same fragment to the nest. When task partitioning occurs and individual ants transporting (T) leaf fragments cut by other ants, the correlation becomes looser or disappears. We also observed that CaT ants are smaller than T ants.

ABSTRACT

Nest digging spends a lot of energy existing a question about how much energy is required to dig the tunnel and initial chamber. It was hypothesized that the lipid content is used during nest digging. This hypothesis was tested by comparing the consequences of increasing digging effort in queens that were experimentally stimulated to excavate a complete founding nest either once, twice or three times consecutively, compared to control queens that didn't dig. Weight and lipid content of queens were quantified. Results showed that, in contrast with the initial expectations, weight and lipid content were not affected by the increased digging effort in the experimentally-induced successive excavations. It was conclude that the excavation by the queens did not affect the percentages of lipids and consequently the energy content, in their bodies. Probably, energy resources for the excavation wasn't originated from lipid reserves, but from other energy sources, perhaps carbohydrates.

ABSTRACT

The production and quality of eucalyptus plantations have been studied in areas with different densities of ant nests, being important to estimate losses caused by leaf-cutting ants. The effects of leaf-cutting ant on wood production in differents productivity sites were studied in eucalyptus plantations in the region of Atlantic Forest, Minas Gerais State, Brazil from 2003 to 2006. Data of plots of the continuous forest inventory and data of leaf-cutting ant monitoring in eucalyptus plantations were obtained. Each unitary increment in the area of Atta spp. nests per hectare reduced the wood production of the eucalyptus forest between 0.04 and 0.13 m³.ha-1, resulting in a level of economic damage for leaf-cutting ants between 13.4 and 39.2 m².ha-1, in this region. Moreover, this study innovated when using indices of forest productivity (site index) that promote better adjustment of the models and produce estimate more accurate of the level of economic damage for leaf-cutting ants in cultivated forests, allowing to conclude that the increase of the total area of ant nests reduces the wooden volume of eucalyptus, proportionally to the productive potential of the forest.

ABSTRACT

In vitro culture of the mutualistic fungus of leaf-cutting ants is troublesome due to its low growth rate, which leads to storage problems and contaminants accumulation. This paper aims at comparing the radial growth rate of the mutualistic fungus of Atta sexdens rubropilosa Forel in two different culture media (Pagnocca B and MEA LP). Although total MEA LP radial growth was greater all along the bioassay, no significant difference was detected between growth efficiencies of the two media. Previous evidences of low growth rate for this fungus were confirmed. Since these data cannot point greater efficiency of one culture medium over the other, MEA LP medium is indicated for in vitro studies with this mutualistic fungus due its simpler composition and translucent color, making the analysis easier.

ABSTRACT

The mandibular gland secretion (MGS) and the faecal fluid (FF) of the leaf-cutting ant Atta sexdens rubropilosa Forel affected the spore germination of selected microfungi isolated from nests of this insect. MGS was more effective than the FF, completely inhibiting the spore germination of four out of six microfungi species.

ABSTRACT

Forest regeneration in abandoned lands of Amazonia can be affected by leaf-cutting ants, since these ants are important predators of the seeds and seedlings of tree species which eventually arrive or emerge in these areas. However, little is known about how rates of seed and seedling predation vary in space and time. With this objective, I established a plot of 80 by 120 m, divided into 10 10 m quadrants, in an abandoned field near Manaus, in Brazilian Amazonia. There were three leaf-cutting ant (Atta laevigata) nests close to this plot. For one year, I determined which plants (tree species only) were attacked by the ants. I also determined the temporal and spatial variation in seed predation. For this, "seed baits" (20 Phaseolus vulgaris seeds in each) were distributed along the plot for one year. Finally, I determined if seedlings (Bellucia imperialis) transplanted into bare soil had a greater chance of being attacked than those transplanted into areas with a dense grass cover. Results show that seed predation activity was spatially aggregated. More predation was observed in the south-east and north-west portions of the plot, generally close to where nests were located. Strong temporal variation in seed predation rates was also observed. The greatest rates were observed around July, while the lowest ones around January. The temporal distribution of attacks on tree seedlings and saplings followed a similar pattern. There was a clear decrease in the number of plants attacked between November and January. The proportion of plants attacked per quadrant varied between 6 and 89%. The number of B. imperialis seedlings attacked did not vary in response to vegetation cover (with or without grass cover), presumably due to the large spatial heterogeneity in A. laevigata foraging activity, which obscured any eventual effect of vegetation cover.

ABSTRACT

Leaves from 120 canopy trees and 60 understory tree saplings growing in primary and secondary forests near Manaus, Brazil, were collected for determination of standing levels of herbivory (percent leaf area lost). Overall, levels of herbivory on leaves of central Amazonian trees were low. About one quarter of the leaves examined (n = 855) had no damage at all. In most other Neotropical sites studied the mean percentage of herbivory was found to vary between 5.7 and 13.1%, whereas in Manaus it was only 3.1%. The data presented here support the contention that levels of herbivore damage are positively related to soil fertility. No significant difference was found in herbivory levels between canopy trees and understory saplings. Also, there was no difference in damage between leaves from pioneer and late successional trees. Field assays of preference, however, revealed that leaves from pioneer trees are more palatable to leaf-cutting ants (Atta laevigata). This effect was dependent upon leaf age, being observed in mature leaves, but not in young leaves. The greater rate of leaf production in secondary forests may be a factor accounting for the greater abundance of leaf-cutting ants in secondary compared to primary forests.

ABSTRACT

This study was developed in urograndis eucalypt hibrid (Eucalyptus urophyllaX Eucalyptus grandis)plantation belonging to Jari Celulose S.A., in Monte Dourado, Pará State, Brazil, from July 1993 to January 1994. Mirex-S (sulfluramid 0.3%) bait at the dosages of 6, 8 and 10 grams was compared to 10 grams of a dodecachlor (0.45%) bait per square meter of ant hill, against Atta cephalotes(Hymenoptera: Formicidae). At the dosages of 6, 8 and 10 grams the Mirex-S bait showed 72.7; 83.3 and 91.67% of nest control compared to 87.5% for the dodecachlor bait. Therefore, Mirex-S bait at 8 and 10 grams per square meter of ant hill can replace the dodecachlor baits for A. cephalotescontrol.
