ABSTRACT

Electrophysiological methods could provide important information about the neurophysiological status in Parkinson's disease (PD). Objective: To investigate the prolonged auditory P300 latency in PD and its association with the disease clinical stage. Method: Clinical profiles of 44 patients were evaluated and those in initial and advanced stages of PD were identified. The frequency of altered latencies, median of latencies in each stage, and correlation between latencies and motor and non-motor clinical features were analyzed. Latencies were considered altered when they were more than two standard deviations from the mean of controls, per age group. Results: It was verified 10% of alterations in initial stages and 31% in advanced. There was correlation between latencies and non-motor clinical features. Subjects older than 65, in advanced stages, presented a significant increase of latencies. Conclusion: There was an association between PD severity and P300 prolonged latencies among subjects 65 years old or older. .

ABSTRACT

Objective To explore the effects of donepezil on auditory event-related potentials in cases of mild cognitive impairment(MCI).Methods Thirty-four mildly impaired patients were examined using auditory event-related potentials and neuropsychological tests. All patients received 5 mg of donepezil orally each day.The patients were retested with the neuropsychological scales and re-examined for auditory event-related potentials after 3 months of treatment. Results All neuropsychological test scores among the MCI patients had improved significantly after treatment There was no significant change in average Boston naming test scores before and after treatment.PS0 amplitudes had decreased significantly after treatment, but P300 amplitude was elevated and latency significantly shortened compared with before treatment.PS0 amplitude was positively correlated with P300 latency in these MCI patients before treatment, but both P300 latencies and PS0 amplitudes showed a negative correlation with scores on the memory sub-tests.Conclusions These results suggest that donepezil may improve cognitive function among MCI patients, especially memory function. The PS0 and P300 components of auditory event-related potentials are objective and sensitive indicators to evaluate the cognition function of MCI patients, and they also can be used as indicators in assessing the efficacy of donepezil treatment of mild cognitive impairment.

ABSTRACT

This study assessed the cognitive brain function measured by the cognitive P300 auditory event-related potentials (ERPs) in female fibromyalgia (FM) patients and compared the results with those from healthy age and education-matched controls. The relationship of the P300 potentials to the pain threshold of patients was also investigated. The P300 component of the auditory ERPs were studied in 11 female FM patients and 10 age and education-matched healthy controls. None of the patients were taking antidepressants such as amitriptyline or serotonin-reuptake inhibitors. The P300 latencies of the patients were not significantly different whereas the N2P3 amplitudes were significantly lower than the controls. The P300 latencies in the patients negatively correlated with the total myalgic scores (TMS) (r= -0.73) and the control point scores (CPS) (r=-0.85). On the other hand, the P300 amplitudes showed a significant correlation with the TMS (r=0.61) and the CPS (r=0.60). There was no significant correlation between the anxiety and depression scores with the P300 latency or amplitudes. These results showed cognitive impairment, which was mainly expressed by the lower N2P3 amplitudes in patients with FM, and its clinical relevance requires further research.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTS: Event related potential(ERF) has been recently applied to examine the neurophysiological disturbance in attention deficit hyperactivity disorder(ADHD), particularly with regard to N100 and P300 which are known as one of ERP components closely linked with cognitive function. On the basis of these aspects, this study was designed to evaluate electrophysiologic characteristics and its availability for diagnosis and treatment of ADHD children by comparison of ERP between normal controls and ADHD children before and after methylphenidate (MFD) administration. METHODS: We examined the topographic auditory ERF and T.O.V.A.(Test of variables of attention), a standardized computerized visual continuous performance test following administration of stimulant drug, MPD 10mg in 13 ADHD children and compared these results with those of 11 normal controls. RESULTS: The results were as follows: 1) Thought the difference was not spastically significant(P=0.0548), N100 latencies seemed to be longer in ADHD children than in normal controls. N100 amplitudes also seemed to be larger in ADHD children than in normal controls(P=0.0629). 2) The F300 latencies significantly shortened after MFD administration when compared with those before MPD administration in ADHD group(P<0.01). 3) ADHD group performed significantly less well than normal controls in T.O.V.A.(P<0.05). And T.O.V.A. scores significantly improved after MFD administration in ADHD group(P<0.01). 4) The N100 and P300 latencies and the T.O.V.A. scores were significantly correlated before MPD administration in ADHD group(P<0.05). 5) The F300 latencies before MFD administration were significantly correlated with the amplitudes of changes of T.O.V.A. scores after MFD administration(P<0.05). CONCLUSION: It seems that prolonged N100 latency of ADHD children can be regarded as a relatively enduring trait marker and that F300 latency may reflect attentional response ability along with therapeutic effect by stimulant.
