ABSTRACT

Objective To measure the circumferential cortical thickness of anterior entrance and anterior half of lower cervical pedicles on computed tomography (CT) images, providing a reference for accurate anterior cervical pedicle screws. Methods CT scanning was performed in 10 normal lower cervical vertebrae from fresh cadavers, and the coronal and sagittal reconstructed images were obtained. The images were then opened in AutoCAD-2007 software to perform quantitative measurement (accuracy was 0. 1 mm) using the “dimaligned function” of dimension menu, and measurement parameters included the thicknesses of superior, medial, inferior and lateral cortex of anterior entrance of pedicle (SAE. MAE. IAE and LAE. respectively), and thicknesses of superior, medial, inferior and lateral cortex of anterior half of pedicle (SPA, MPA, IPA and LPA, respectively). Results Average thicknesses of SAE. MAE. IAE. LAE, SPA, MPA. IPA, and LPA at left and right side from Q to C7 were (1. 9 + 0. 6) and (1. 9 + 0. 5) mm, (1. 9 + 0. 7) and (1.9+0. 4) mm. (2.4 + 0. 6) and (2. 4 + 0. 5) mm, (0. 9 + 0. 5) and (0. 9 + 0. 6) mm, (2. 3 + 0. 9) and (2. 3 +0. 7) mm, (2. 1 + 0. 5) and (2. 1 + 0. 6) mm, (2. 2+0. 8) and (2. 2+0. 7) mm, and (1. 0 + 0. 7) and (1. 0 + 0. 6) mm, respectively. There was no significant difference in same measurement parameter between left and right sides at same cervical level (P>0. 05). Single factor random block analysis of variance found LAE and LPA were significantly thinner than the other 6 parameters of the same side of same cervical vertebra (all P0. 05). Conclusion LAE and LPA are the thinnest among the 8 measurement parameters from C3 to C7, which suggests LAE and LPA have the weakest resistance to exotic force if resistance strength to exotic force is parallel to cortex thickness. We should avoid locating close to LAE when finding anterior entrance or close to LPA when inserting anterior cervical pedicle screws.

ABSTRACT

Aims: Effect of composition of hybrid composites on their microleakage behavior was evaluated. Study Design: An invitro microleakage study. Place and Duration of Study: Department of Conservative Dentistry, Faculty of Dentistry, The University of Jordan, Amman, Jordan, between May 2012 and July 2013. Methodology: 160 Class V cavities were divided into four equal parts each restored with either “Spectrum”,“Admira”, “FilteckP90” or “Smart dentine replacement SDR”. Teeth were thermocycled, immersed in 1% methylene blue for four hours and sectioned buccolingually. AutoCAD software was used in delineating cavity outlines and depth of dye penetration. Data was treated using ANOVA, Turkey and t-tests at 95% confidence. Results: Spectrum displayed more intact interface at enamel margins than Filteck, P90 and Admira, similarly SDR interface to enamel was better than that of Admira® (p<0.05). The materials’ interface at the gingival wall was of comparable nature. Conclusion: Variations of materials’ type or location of Class V cavity, buccal or lingual, does not affect the tooth/restoration bond interface. AutoCAD software proved to be a powerful measurement tool and is recommended for microleakage studies.

ABSTRACT

Objective To evaluate intra-and interobserver reliability of analysis of lower limb alignment on DR digital images using AutoCAD.Methods Angles on AP view and long leg view were measured three times by two trained observers separately using these two methods in 140 knees. The intra-and interobserver intraclass correlation coefficients with 95% CIs of two methods were calculated and compared with Fisher z transformation and Z test.Paired t test was used in comparing time consumption. Results For AutoCAD method, inter ICCs were 0.942? 0.993 ,intra ICCs were 0.937~0.999.For X-ray films method, inter ICCs were 0.736~0.981,intra ICCs were 0.759~0.951.Corresponding ICCs of AutoCAD method were higher than those of X-ray films method, most of which had significant differences(P<0.01).The consuming time of two observers in measuring one knee using AutoCAD method was 89.6 seconds and 94.3 seconds shorter than those using X-ray films method respectively. Both had significant differences(P<0.01).Conclusion It was a fast reliable method to assess lower limb alignment on DR digital images using AutoCAD.

ABSTRACT

Aims: The quantitative measurement and characterization of microscopical images using a computer is histomorphometry. The purpose of this experimental research is to evaluate the validity of two methods of histomorphometry of root structure loss measuring antiresorptive efficacy of topical application of alendronate in delayed tooth replantation on a canine model. Methods: We used fortyeight premolar mature roots from five dogs in the study. Roots were soaked in: 1 mMol of ALN, 3 mMol of ALN and physiological saline. After 4 months, animals were sacrificed and a bone block was prepared for analysis. Histological slides were photographed with digital camera (Olympus C 5060 5.1 megapixel) which is directly attached to microscope (Carl Zeiss, Axiolab, Jena, Germany) connected to a PC. The images obtained were stored as figures (TIFF) for further interpretation. Root structure loss due to resorption was measured in two ways. Results: The t-test for two independent samples for evaluating root mass loss between different methods of measurement was used. (t=4.497; df=17; p<0.05). Conclusion: The obtained results showed additional accuracy and precision by computer method that enables future researchers in the area of traumatic injuries of dento-alveolar system, for applying in pathohistology scientific approach, and for measuring the resorption changes on the roots of replanted teeth.
