ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT

Objective:This study conducted a statistical analysis of the 2010 to 2019 Chinese Medical Science and Technology Award to understand its current situation and research hotspots, to provide references for medical science and technology investigators and administrators. Methods:Through the official website of the Chinese Medical Association, the 2010 to 2019 Chinese Medical Science and Technology Award data was collected. Information includes gender of the awardees, award level, geographical distribution, discipline distribution, and completion unit of the first person was analyzed. Network metrology, social network analysis and word cloud graph analysis are used to analyze the " development status" , " cooperative relationship" and " research hotspots" of medical research in China. Results:The total number of winning projects was 857. Among them, the number of first, second, and third prizes were 76, 249 and 475. Beijing is the area with the largest number of winners (277), followed by Shanghai (167) and Jiangsu (92). Among the winning projects, the top 3 subject were oncology, cardiology, orthopaedics, general surgery with percentages accounted by 9.78%, 7.94%, 6.21%.Conclusions:The geographical distribution of winning projects presented a regional concentration trend. The disciplines of award-winning projects have been diversified, especially in oncology. The gender ratio of principal investigators is uneven, most were male. Future research should pay more attention to multidisciplinary, cross-regional facilitation, and promote the coordinated development of holistic medicine.

ABSTRACT

SUMMARY Smoking is a major global risk factor for preventable death and disability. EAT is an acronym for Education Against Tobacco, a multinational network of physicians and medical students that aims to improve tobacco control by means of school-based prevention targeted at adolescents through counseling, use of software and support materials. The first EAT-Brazil Award, launched in March 2018, was a competition designed to encourage the proposal of objective solutions for tobacco control in Brasil, and identify new talents in the area. Brazilian undergraduate students from any field of study could submit a one-page essay on the subject, competing for the amount of R$ 1000.00 (one thousand reais). There were a total of 39 applicants (20 women and 19 men) from 9 Brazilian states and 18 undergraduate programs, with a mean age of 22.5 years (SD = 3.7). Data from an online anonymous questionnaire answered after the submission of their essays revealed that most applicants were students of institutions from in the state of Minas Gerais (n = 26/39; 66.6%), studied medicine (n = 20/39, 51.3%), and had no prior knowledge of the EAT-Brazil Network (n = 27/39, 69.2%). The winner of the award was Lucas Guimarães de Azevedo, a fourth-year medical student at Federal University of Western Bahia. The next editions of the award should focus on increasing the number of applicants and diversifying their geographical distribution.

ABSTRACT

In this study, the standard research methods were applied to account the awards and applications of scientific research achievements of Xiyuan hospital from 2010 to 2014. As for the scientific research awards, each department from Xiyuan hospital was active, but the awards application offices were relatively few, thus the quantity of the awards was decreasing year by year. And the distribution was relatively uneven. The basic characteristics of scientific research awards showed that the National Science and Technology Award was the most difficult award. And other characteristics of scientific research award showed that it was often based on a project with high social recognition and high authority, and with the first researchers were high rank professors. This work cast light on that scientific research management should improve the quality of projects and strengthen exchanges, propaganda and introduction of each project achievement, enhance team establishment as support, and establish a reasonable assessment system for scientific research achievements.

ABSTRACT

A deep analysis of the present 26 non-government awards on medical technology achievements was made to probe into setbacks in access to such awards. The findings include lack of independence due to the semi-official nature, tight budget caused by limited funding sources, variety of award sizes due to lack of levels, less corporate involvement to result in less sponsors, and lack of international awards due to unsatisfactory international awareness. The authors recommend such optimal paths as laws and regulations to regulate such awards to be hosted by legal persons, incentives for more enterprises participation to make the awards a public highlight among enterprises, control over the size and types of such awards for better branding, and greater efforts in international collaboration to make international awards.
