ABSTRACT

Purpose: The aim of the study was to describe a graded approach for assessment and specific treatment, which can achieve satisfactory postoperative result in East Asian personalized lower blepharoplasty. Methods: We reviewed 913 patients who underwent lower blepharoplasty from 2008 to 2020. We preoperatively classified patients with different characteristics to provide personalized treatment. Results: There were 163 patients with fat herniation but no lower eyelid skin laxity, 259 patients with lower eyelid skin laxity accompanied by mild fat herniation, 313 patients with sagging lower eyelid skin accompanied by mild fat herniation and tear troughs, and a total of 178 patients with sagging skin accompanied by moderate to severe fat herniation and tear troughs. The overall success rate was 97.81%. Postoperative complications included the following: conjunctival chemosis, dry eye symptoms, and more. Conclusion: For East Asian patients with different characteristics, we achieved satisfactory postoperative results through accurate preoperative clinical grading and personalized surgical plans. The success of the operation not only depends on correct manipulation during the procedure but also on the surgeon’s accurate assessment and full grasp of the anatomy of each patient preoperatively.

ABSTRACT

Objective:To promote the reuse of recyclable medical wastes by analyzing the current status of the disposal and factors affecting recycling of medical wastes in medical institutions.Methods:On-site investigations were made on the collection and disposal of recyclable medical wastes at 20 tertiary hospitals in Liaoning Province in the timeframe from January 1 through December 31 of 2018, together with on-site interviews of 25 managers and 5 transfer personnels. Investigation results were then subject to descriptive analysis. Results:There were 18 tertiary hospitals that separately collect recyclable infusion bottles and infusion bags, and only one hospital collected empty bottles of penicillin and cephalosporin antibiotics. There was a linear relationship between the amount of recyclable medical wastes and the actual number of beds available( F=47.177, P=0.000). The amount of medical waste generated in general hospitals and that of recyclable medical waste generated were much higher than those of traditional Chinese medicine hospitals and specialized hospitals. The main factors on the recovery were poor and delayed command of relevant laws and decrees, and inadequate rules and regulations of the hospital, as well as lack of qualified recycling companies and poor compliance of transfer personnel. Conclusions:It is recommended that hospitals formulate and update rules and regulations, establish standardized recycling processes, and strengthen relevant staff training and supervision. The health commission is recommended to enhance communication with relevant authorities, for due appraisal of the qualifications of enterprises recovering recyclable medical wastes.

ABSTRACT

Aim: The study aimed to evaluate different packaging materials at different storage conditions for improving the shelf life of guava fruits.Methodology: The guava fruits (Cv. Sardar) were stored at ambient and cold storage conditions (10°C, 90% RH) in four packaging materials viz., Cellulose acetate film bags (CAFB), Breathing bags (BB), Polypropylene bags (PPB) and Brown paper bags (BPB). The quality attributes like physiological loss in weight, colour, fruit firmness, sensory score and biochemical parameters such as non-reducing sugars, reducing sugars, total sugar, acidity, ascorbic acid, Total Soluble Solids (TSS) and pectin were evaluated. Results: There was significant effect of packaging materials and storage conditions on quality of guava fruits during storage. The average weight loss at ambient condition irrespective of packaging material was twice (0.86 % per day) than that of cold storage condition (0.41 % per day). The average weight loss irrespective of storage conditions was highest for control fruits at ambient condition (1.88 % per day) and lowest for the fruits packed in Polypropylene bags (0.018 % per day). The fruit firmness decreased with storage period. Non-reducing sugars, reducing sugars and total sugars increased initially and subsequently decreased. Titrable acidity, ascorbic acid and pectin reduced and total soluble solids increased with advancement of storage period. Sensory evaluation revealed that fruits stored in cellulose acetate film bags and breathing bags at cold storage conditions could achieve shelf life of 18 days with high overall acceptability. Interpretation: Studies revealed that the guava fruits can be stored upto 18 days in cellulose acetate film bags and breathing bags at 10°C with 90% RH storage conditions with acceptable sensory score.

ABSTRACT

Background: Convenience of plastic use pays a high price by negatively affecting health and environment. As nationwide ban on use of plastic carry bags failed, statewide ban was imposed in Tamil Nadu from 1st January 2019. This study was planned with the objective of determining the awareness, acceptance and practice of plastic ban legislation among residents in urban population in Kancheepuram district, Tamil Nadu. Methods: This community based cross sectional study was carried out with a sample size of 250 using systematic random sampling method. Data was collected using structured questionnaire and further analysis was done with SPSS Version 25 Software. Results: About 94% respondents were aware of legislation and 76% had a positive attitude towards the ban. About 52% participants continued using plastic bags despite the ban. Common source of knowledge about the ban was mass media (42%). About 80% were aware of the negative effects of plastic use and 70% were aware that plastics are non-bio-degradable. Statistically significant association was found between various socio demographic factors with the use of plastic bags. Alternate eco-friendly bags usage was found among 48% of respondents. Conclusions: Good awareness level about the ill effects of plastic use and its ban was observed but the level of implementation in their daily life was poor. Even after the preparatory period of six months given to get accustomed to eco-friendly alternatives, the use of plastic bags still remains rampant. IEC activities need to be intensified to bring about changes in the attitude and practice of plastic use.

ABSTRACT

Abstract: The objective of this work was to evaluate the effect of gallic acid (GA) concentration on some physical properties and biodegradability of films produced with proteins extracted from the castor bean cake. The films, prepared by the casting technique, showed homogeneous and brownish appearance. As the GA concentration increased (from 0 to 10 g/100 g protein), the films gradually became darker and more opaque; while the gloss had few significant differences. Solubility, tensile strength and elasticity modulus values of films varied due to changing concentrations of gallic acid. Elongation at break and water vapor permeability values did not have significant changes. A 60% mineralization value of the film containing GA was obtained at 21 days, evidencing its biodegradability. These dark and opaque films could be used in agriculture, specifically in seedling bags as the dark color decrease the incidence of light, preventing root weakening, and the seedlings can be transplanted directly without removal of the film.

ABSTRACT

A dermoid cyst is a germ cell tumour, benign in nature and common in young women under the age of 30. They are usually asymptomatic and often detected incidentally on imaging. Resection of the cyst is important owing to complications like torsion or malignancy. Laparoscopic surgery is the modality of choice in today’s era. However, rupture of the cyst during laparoscopic retrieval is any surgeon’s nightmare. Hence, good surgical skill and a reliable method of retrieval are of prime importance here. Authors present a novel method of dermoid extraction done laparoscopically with a sterile urine collection (urobag) bag. This is an easy and simple method which decreases the rate of spillage owing to the strength of the bag.

ABSTRACT

Background: Increasing disease incidence and prevalence necessitate healthcare practitioners to prescribe diverse medications. Families and patients are in possession of unused or expired medications and its risks have started gaining notice across the world. Majority of them including medical students are unaware about the disposal of unused or expired medicines. Misuse and improper disposal of unused/expired medications is a major safety and environmental concern, and thus proper disposal of those medications is highly important. Methods: Questionnaire based study was conducted among medical undergraduates of third year MBBS in two tertiary care teaching hospitals of Uttar Pradesh after approval from Institutional Ethical Committees during July-August 2018.Results: There were 65% of respondent had unused drugs in their home while 30% had the expired drugs. The most common reason for the unused and expiry drugs in the home was self-discontinuation. Analgesics were the main group of drugs possessed by participants. 67% in this study responded that drug disposal method was disposing the expired drugs to garbage. Only 26% know about the area in the city where unused/expired drugs are collected. 46% think that proper education of the community is required for appropriate disposal of unused drugs. Conclusions: Intervention by education about prudent drug disposal techniques that are also environmentally safe and acceptable is the need of time to change their behavior. There is also needing to understand the practice and awareness of the public to make any such education by program a success.

ABSTRACT

Among the main problems of some temperate fruit species, such as the apple tree (Malus domestica), are the poor set of fruits and low production. Polyamines and Self-Incompatibility Control Substances (SICS), involving mineral nutrients such as manganese and boron, are the major chemical compounds used to reduce these problems. The aim of this study was to use popular polyamines putrescine (Put) at 0.1, 0.25 mM, spermine (Spm) and spermidine (Spd) both at 0.05, 0.25 mM and SICS at 1, 2 mg L-1, alone or with cotton coverage bags and control to show the effects of these chemical compounds on yield indices and qualitative traits of apple (Malus domestica) cv ‘Red Delicious’. Results showed that Spd (0.25 mM) and SICS (1 mg L-1) had higher effect on yield per weight and per fruit number, final fruit set and ISI, but Spd (0.25 mM) decreased final drop. Put (0.1 mM + ccb), Spd (0.25 mM) and SICS (2 mg L-1 + ccb) were the most suitable treatments in order to increase the qualitative characteristics.

ABSTRACT

The objective was to compare in vitro digestibility of dry matter (IVDMD) and neutral detergent fiber (IVNDFD) of forages and concentrates obtained using the incubators DaisyII and TE-150, and filter bags F57 (Ankon®) or non-woven textile (NWT - 100g/m²) in comparison with the values obtained using the Tilley and Terry (1963) method. Twenty-five samples of concentrates and 25 samples of forages were used. There were no differences between filter bags (P>0.39) for IVDMD of forages. Higher IVDMD (P<0.01) were observed for TE-150 compared to DaisyII. Estimates of IVDMD obtained with incubators and filter bags were higher (P<0.01) than those obtained with the Tilley and Terry (1963) method. Higher IVNDFD (P<0.01) were obtained with filter bags F57 regarding to NWT and TE-150 when compared to DaisyII. All values of the IVNDFD obtained with incubators and filter bags were higher (P<0.01) than those obtained with the Tilley and Terry (1963) method. Both IVDMD and IVNDFD variables were greater using TE-150 incubator than using DaisyII (P<0.04). Estimates obtained using NWT filter bags were higher (P<0.01) than F57 filter bags. All methods were positively and strongly correlated (P<0.01) to each other for IVDMD and IVNDFD. The repeatability and variances among samples for IVDMD and IVNDFD were similar among methods. In conclusion, all methods were similarly able to discriminate samples.(AU)

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT The objective of this study was to compare the estimates of ether extract (EE) contents obtained by the Randall method and by the high-temperature method of the American Oil Chemist's Society (AOCS; Am 5-04) in forages (n = 20) and cattle feces (n = 15). The EE contents were quantified by using the Randall extraction or AOCS method and XT4 filter bags or cartridges made of qualitative filter paper (80 g/m²) as containers for the samples. It was also evaluated the loss of particles, and concentration of residual chlorophyll after extraction and the recovery of protein and minerals in the material subjected to extraction. Significant interaction was observed between extraction method and material for EE contents. The EE estimates using the AOCS method were higher, mainly in forages. No loss of particles was observed with different containers. The chlorophyll contents in the residues of cattle feces were not affected by the extraction method; however, residual chlorophyll was lower using the AOCS method in forages. There was complete recovery of the protein and ash after extraction. The results suggest that AOCS method produces higher estimates of EE contents in forages and cattle feces, possibly by providing greater extraction of non-fatty EE.

ABSTRACT

Automobile airbags have been shown to reduce morbidity and mortality in the event of a vehicle crash; however, new problems have been identified. Among these problems, direct injury from the airbag itself has become a serious concern. This suggests that an airbag itself may not be safe. Burn injury from airbags accounts for about 7.8% of all injuries caused by vehicle crashes. There are three types of burn injuries from airbags: Thermal, chemical, and frictional. Moreover, there are three subtypes within the category of thermal airbag burn, as identified by Tsunetuki in 2003. Herein, we review a case of an airbag burn and report a unique burn case on ‘an upper extremity’, including both thermal and frictional burns.

ABSTRACT

Objective:To establish a method for the determination of Mg and Al in 5-layer co-extrusion bags and their migration from the bags into infusion by ICP-MS. Methods:The samples were digested by microwave digestion, and the contents of Mg and Al were determined by ICP-MS under certain working conditions. Results:Both Mg and Al had a linear range between 2. 5 and 20. 0 μg ·L-1, and r was 0. 999 6 and 0. 999 7, respectively. The average recovery of Mg was 92. 90% (RSD=3. 01%,n=9),and that of Al was 94. 15% (RSD=4. 11%,n=9). Conclusion:The method is accurate, sensitive and simple, and can be used for the determi-nation of Mg and Al in 5-layer co-extrusion bags and their migration from the bags into infusion.
