ABSTRACT

Kati Basti is an Ayurvedic treatment approach that includes several acts such as Bahyasnehana (external oleation), and Swedana Chikitsa (fomentation therapy). Katibasti is not mentioned in any of the classical sources. Even though it is not injected into the body, it is nevertheless referred to as Basti because medicated and lubricated substances are applied to certain parts of the body for a set period. In Kati (back) and Adhah shakagata vikaras, Katibasti is beneficial (disorders of the lower part of the body). This type of external Basti is very beneficial for muscle spasms, lower back tightness, and bone tissue strengthening in the back area. Backache is the common term used for trending diseases of today's lifestyle due to the engagement of people in improper postures, one of them is sciatica. Sciatica (Gridhrasi) is a word for low back pain that travels down the inside of the leg, through the hip, to the back of the thigh, and down the inside of the leg. In general, 5-10% of people with low back pain have sciatica, but the lifetime prevalence of low back pain is believed to be between 49 and 70 percent. Modern science's treatment of sciatica is unsatisfactory, involving the use of analgesics for pain alleviation and surgical techniques that are frequently associated with side effects. Gridhrasi or sciatica is treated with a variety of methods described in Ayurveda. Kati Basti is a one-of-a-kind therapeutic technique due to its simple, non-invasive, and effective approach. The present review focus of Kati basti, its scientific understanding, its mode of action along its application in sciatica.

ABSTRACT

Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a gastrointestinal disorder characterized by altered bowel habits and abdominal pain in the absence of detectable structural abnormalities. The pathogenesis of IBS is poorly understood, although roles for abnormal gut motor and sensory activity, central neural dysfunction, psychological disturbances, stress, and luminal factors have been proposed. About 10-15% of the population is affected at some time but only 10% of these consult their doctor because of symptoms. In Ayurveda, IBS can be correlated to Grahani Roga due to similarity in their clinical presentation. In this case an effort was made to treat a 32 years old male patient having symptoms of Muhurbaddha Muhurshithil (episode of constipated and loose stools), Apakwa Malapravritti (Stool with mucus), Udarshool (abdominal pain). Patient treated with various Panchakarma (five Bio-cleaning Ayurvedic therapies) procedures like Basti (herbal medicated enema), Takra Dhara (pouring Herbal medicated butter milk on head) and oral medications. At the end of 60 days of treatment patient got significant improvement in episode of constipated and loose stools (75%), distension of abdomen (75%), anorexia (100%) and stool with mucus (100%).

ABSTRACT

Background: Large numbers of population suffer from the low back-pain. Prevalence increases linearly from third decade of life on, until the 60 years of age, being more prevalent in woman. Sciatica most commonly occurs when a herniated disk, bone spur on the spine or narrowing of the spine (spinal stenosis) compresses part of the nerve. It is commonly occurs due to the compression of lumbar nerves L4 or L5 or sacral nerves S1, S2 or S3 or by the compression of the sciatic nerve itself. This causes inflammation, pain and often some numbness in the affected leg. Gridhrasi is the one amongst the 80 types of Nanatmaja disorders of Vatavyadhi, It starts from Kati- prishta (pelvic region and Lumbosacral) radiating to Jangha (thigh) and Pada (feet) with impairment of lifting the leg. The gait of the person is very similar to vulture (Gridhra) hence the name is given as Gridharsi. Material and Method: A case controlled clinical study on a known case of Gridharsi has been done in All India Institute of Ayurveda Hospital. The treatment was planned on the basis of principles of Ayurveda mentioned in the context of Gridharsi including Erand-mooladi basti and oral medications.
