ABSTRACT

Abstract Introduction There is growing interest in the fields of psychiatry and psychology in investigating the relationship between personality and psychopathology. The Big-5 is a model developed to investigate five personality dimensions: Extroversion, Agreeableness, Conscientiousness, Neuroticism, and Openness. In the present study, we describe the process of translation into Brazilian Portuguese and adaptation of a free tool to evaluate the Big-5 model: The Big-5 Inventory (BFI). The instrument has 44 items with a Likert response scale ranging from 1 to 5. Objectives To translate and adapt the BFI into Brazilian Portuguese. Methods The adaptation was conducted in the following steps: 1) Translation, 2) Evaluation Committee, 3) Back-translation, 4) Pilot study, 5) Evaluation Committee, and 6) Application. The sample comprised 490 participants from various regions of Brazil. The participants' ages ranged from 18 to 71 years, most of them had completed high school (62.9%), and the majority were women (75%). Results A model with the following fit indexes was found: χ2/df: 1.954; goodness fit index (GFI): 0.924; comparative fit index (CFI): 0.920; and root mean square error of approximation (RMSEA): 0.044. Conclusion The results are suggestive that the Brazilian version of this instrument has good psychometric properties and represent a cost-free option for investigating associations with the Big-5 in psychiatry.

ABSTRACT

Abstract The Five-Factor Model (ffm) of personality predominates in the scientific literature, and the Big Five Inventory (bfi) is one of its main evaluations. Considering the limitations of previous studies, the aim of the present study was to explore the dimensionality of the bfi assessment instrument, to test higherorder factors and to analyze its relations with self-esteem, age, and sex of the participants. A total of 549 university students participated. The results showed adequate psychometric properties for the bfi and for the two-factor model of higher order personality traits. In addition, significant differences were observed by sex in terms of agreeableness and neuroticism, relationships between age, neuroticism, and conscientiousness, as well as relationships between both higher order factors and self-esteem.

ABSTRACT

The aim of this study was to create two short versions (15 and 10 items) of the Big Five Inventory (BFI) with empirical and theoretical bases. Participants included 332 Peruvian university students (82.83% women), aged between 16 and 48 years (M = 20.39). The main analysis was performed using the unweighted least squares method with oblique Procrustes rotation and fully specified matrix. The analysis results showed that both brief versions had robust psychometric properties: an adequate factor structure and empirical equivalence with the original BFI. Finally, the two versions displayed acceptable reliability indexes as well (αaverage > .60). In conclusion, both versions show favorable psychometric indicators that would enable their use in basic and group research.

ABSTRACT

Objective To evaluate the reliability and validity of Bowel Function Index applied to assess the constipation induced by strong opioid drugs for patients with cancer pain. Methods 126 patients with constipation induced by strong opioid drugs for pain caused by cancer were selected.BFI,Patient Assessment of Constipation Symptoms(PAC-SYM) and clinical observations were used to collect data which were conducted for reliability analysis, correlation analysis and tests for several independent samples to evaluate the reliability and validity. Results The internal consistency determined by Cronbach αt was 0.86 for the total BFI score.Significant correlations were found among BFI,PAC-SYM and clinical observations. The BFI total score and each item scores of three groups all showed significant differences. Conclusions The Chinese version of BFI is a simple, valid and reliable, clinically relevant tool to assess the constipation induced by strong opioid drugs for pain caused by cancer.

ABSTRACT

The aim of this work was to explore the possibility of utilizing BFI as a tool for classifying, grouping and ranking binders based on performance in ameliorating capping and lamination in paracetamol tablets. Binders from different origins (starches, celluloses, natural gums, and synthetic gums) were used via wet granulation at concentrations ranging from 1.0 - 12.5% w/w to make paracetamol tablets with and without centre holes at a compression pressure of 7.5 arbitrary units. Requisite quality control tests were conducted on the tablets. The BFI values of the tablets were computed and statistically analyzed using Friedman’s test and regression analysis. The analyses revealed significant differences between the BFI values of the formulations (p < 0.05), projected BFI as a useful tool in grouping and ranking binders based on effectiveness in ameliorating capping and lamination in paracetamol tablets, but failed to be useful in classifying the binders based on nature or origin. Furthermore, with the exception of some of the tablets formulated with the celluloses or starches, others met the official requirements for good quality and those formulated with plant gums or PVP released up to 70% of drug in 15min at low binder concentrations. The present findings may serve as a guide to formulators since they may enable quick and easy selection of the best and most economic binder(s) from an array of available binders for the conversion of paracetamol or related powders into good quality tablets.
