ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT Older adults should perform physical activity to improve cardiorespiratory functions. Aerobic exercises improve cardiovascular function, decrease basal heart rate and blood pressure, and improve mood and energy. To facilitate the execution of aerobic physical activity in older adults, the objective of this research was to design an exercise device for older adults. Starting from design specifications such as comfort, size, weight, resistance, and cost, we developed the detailed design of a horizontal bicycle. The designed device, thanks to its horizontally disposed structure, its adequate resistance to pedaling, its dimensioning based on anthropometric measurements of the Chilean population, and the disposition of sensors for heart rate and oxygen saturation, is suitable for older adults. Its weight and size also make it convenient for use inside the home, and the use of materials, components, and manufacturing processes available nationally and within the cheapest options, increases the possibility of access by older adults.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT Bicycle paths are important infrastructures in the cities to promote active commuting. Thus, understanding the information inherent to their quality might help to understand their effects on human behavior. This study aimed at assessing the quality of the bike paths in the city of Florianopolisl by using the QualiCicle instrument. SOPARC tool was used to verify the use profile. A total of 38 cycling axes with a length of 54 km were selected. The qualitative analysis was classified as sufficient, with an overall average of 1.61 points. A total of 6,113 cyclists were observed; the majority was adult men who used to cycle in moderate intensity. Better-quality bike paths had a greater number of cyclists (50.5%). The logistic regression analyzes showed that young people are less likely to use cycle paths classified as 'good' ones (OR: 0.40; 95% CI: 0.24-0.67). Considering per category, there is a greater chance of women to use bike paths with a 'good/excellent' infrastructure quality, and a 'sufficient' and 'good/excellent' signalization. It is concluded that Florianopolis has an adequate bikeway network; however, the infrastructure distribution and the cycle path connections are irregular along the city regions. A better quality of the cycling infrastructures can promote greater use by women and the elderly, groups that perform less physical activity.

ABSTRACT

This study analyzes the active commuting pattern of the Metropolitan Region of the City of Campinas, Brazil, by considering its commuters and their features. By using the database of Pesquisa Origem e Destino (a Brazilian instrument for transportation planning) of Campinas Metropolitan Region 2003-2011, we present descriptive and temporal statistics concerning the characteristics of the region's commuters, cities, and journeys. To assess those, we adopted a confidence interval of 95% (CI 95%). We used the Poisson regression to check the correlation between individual characteristics and outcomes of being a cyclist or a pedestrian, adopting the value of p < 0.05. We took into consideration the procedures for datum obtaining to present representative samples, verifying that the number of both cyclists and pedestrians has dropped. We found pos-itive associations regarding low-income males and being a cyclist; as well as females and children/teenagers and being pedestrians. The mean length of commuting time has increased for cycling journeys and decreased for pedestrian ones. We could not find a bicycle journey that integrates with another mean of transportation. Regarding the size of a city, we observed that the number of cycling journeys has dropped in small, medium, and large municipalities; Campinas presents the lowest index

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT This study investigated the effect of an intervention on perceptions of barriers for the bicycle use in commuting to work by industrialists. 876 men (mean age = 35.4 ± 9.5 years) from a metallo-mechanical company participated. The sample was randomized into a control and intervention group (438 participants in each group) considering the use or not of the bicycle when commuting to work. The intervention had 23 meetings of approximately 30 minutes each, spread over six months, based on the Transteoric Model of Behavior Change (TMBC). The perception of barriers to bicycle use was assessed using the "scale to assess the perception of barriers to bicycle use". Descriptive statistics, chi-square, Wilcoxon test, Kruskal-Wallis and Mann-Whitney were applied for analysis, adopting p < 0.05. There was a statistical decline in perception of barriers to bicycle use in the intervention group (Z = -2.218; p = 0.027). When stratified by age group, greater effectiveness of the intervention was observed in reducing in the perception of barriers in individuals aged 30-39 years (Z = -2.637; p = .008). For the other age groups, there were no significant differences. It is concluded that interventions based on TMBC are effective to decrease the perception of barriers for bycicle use in the commuting to work.

ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION: Bicycle accidents are a frequent cause of blunt abdominal trauma in children. In Chile, there are no scientific articles about such accidents, their presentation and management. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study is to describe three cases of blunt abdominal trauma due to handlebar injury in children, in order to illustrate the different kinds of lesions, their presentation, and management. CLINICAL CASES: 1) 11-year-old boy presented to Emergency Department (ED) after falling on a bi cycle handlebar, hitting his epigastric region. A CT scan showed signs of duodenal perforation. A la parotomy was performed and the duodenal perforation repaired. 2) 14-year-old boy seen at ED after a bicycle accident in which the handlebar hit him in the abdomen area. A CT scan showed a splenic injury with multiple lacerations and active bleeding that was treated with angioembolization. After 6 weeks of follow-up, he presented resolution of the lesion and viability of the spleen. 3) 9-year-old boy admitted due to a hit with the bicycle handlebar on the abdomen area. A CT scan showed a he patic injury that was managed with non-surgical procedures, achieving resolution of the lesion after 8 weeks of follow-up. CONCLUSION: Blunt abdominal trauma caused by handlebar can be potentially serious in pediatric patients, since it may affect solid and hollow abdominal viscera. Non-surgical ma nagement is becoming more used for stable patients, achieving high success rates. Unstable patients or those with suspicion of hollow viscera perforation will require surgery as first approach.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: This study aimed to investigate bicycle injury patients who suffered orthopedic injuries. METHODS: From January 1, 2010 to December 31, 2014, 1,664 people visited the emergency room due to a bicycle accident. Among them, 385 patients were found to have orthopedic injuries through physical examination and imaging evaluation. Intending to evaluate whether the number of bicycle injury patients is increasing or decreasing yearly, we investigated the rate of orthopedic injuries among bicycle injury patients, the damaged areas and the extent of damage, and also investigated whether changes in frequency were correlated with sex, age, or season. RESULTS: From January 1, 2010 to December 31, 2014, a total of 237,533 people came to the emergency room. Among them, the number of bicycle injuries was 1,664 (0.7%), and 23% of the bicycle injuries (385 people) were orthopedic injuries. Among these, 77.4% were men, 44.5% were less than 20 years old, and 20% were more than 61 years old. Damage to the forearm (n=82, 21.3%) and the shoulder (n=71, 18.4%) were the most common injuries, and simple fractures affected 274 patients (71.1%), overwhelmingly more common than other patterns of damage. In combination, simple fracture and dislocations occurred in 279 cases (72.5%). CONCLUSION: Most bicycle injuries occur in young and elderly people. Fractures of the forearm and shoulder were the most common orthopedic injuries. We expect that this study will be helpful in providing information about the orthopedic characteristics of bike injuries.

ABSTRACT

With the steady rise of health and environmental awareness, the number of bicyclists is increasing. However, there are few epidemiologic studies on bicycling under the influence (BUI). The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of BUI and the associated risk factors in a representative Korean population. The data of 4,833 adult bicyclists who participated in the Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (2010–2012) were analyzed. Among the 4,833 participants investigated in this study, 586 (12.1%) had experienced BUI. As participants’ age increased, so did the prevalence of BUI (P < 0.001), with the participants who were aged 60–69 showing the highest prevalence of BUI (19.6%). With regard to BUI and drinking habits, the likelihood of being a heavy or high-risk drinker increased with the frequency of BUI (P < 0.001). In addition, there was a positive relationship between the frequency of BUI and alcohol use disorder identification score level. Finally, those who had previous experiences of BUI were significantly more likely to drive and ride motorcycles under the influence (P < 0.001). In conclusion, the prevalence of BUI was 12.1% and several associated risk factors for BUI were elucidated in this study. The development of specific preventive strategies and educational programs aimed at deterring individuals at a high risk of engaging in BUI is expected to reduce the number of alcohol-related bicycle injuries.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: Head injury is the main cause of death and severe disability in bicycle-related injuries. The purpose of this study was to compare the demographic characteristics and injury mechanisms of bicycle-related head injuries according to the severity and outcome and determine the main risk factors and common types of accompanying injuries. METHODS: A total of 205 patients who were admitted to the neurosurgery department of our hospital for bicycle-related head injuries between 2007 and 2016 were analyzed. We categorized the patients into two groups according to severity and outcome of head injury, and then identified the differences in age, sex, and cause of injury between the two groups. RESULTS: Collisions with a motor vehicle increased the risk of severe head injury (p=0.011), resulted in poor outcomes (Glasgow Outcome Scale [GOS] ≤3; p=0.022), and caused more accompanying chest/abdominal (p<0.001) and pelvic/lower extremity injuries (p=0.001) than other mechanisms. Older age and high grade of head injury severity resulted in poor outcomes (p=0.028 and p<0.001, respectively), and caused more accompanying chest/abdominal injuries (p<0.032 and p<0.001, respectively) compared with younger age and low grade of head injury severity. CONCLUSION: In bicycle-related head injuries, collision with motor vehicle is one of the most important risk factor for high grade of head injury severity and outcome. In addition, bicycle-related head injuries are often accompanied by injuries of other parts of the body.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT

Background: During the post-operative phase after coronary artery bypass (CAB) surgery, prolonged bed rest increases the possibility of systemic complications resulting from immobilization. Objective: To ascertain the behavior of peak expiratory flow and hemodynamic variables among elderly patients during the CAB postoperative period undergoing three types of physiotherapy interventions. Methods: Thirty elderly patients were studied, divided into three groups: Group A - mobilization with an ergometric bicycle; Group B - mobilization without an ergometric bicycle but with physiotherapy; and Group C - no mobilization but with non-invasive ventilation, analyzing the heart rate (HR), respiration rate (RR), blood pressure (BP), peripheral oxygen saturation (SpO2)and expiratory peak flow. The Wilcoxon test was used for variations in the intra-group results for the pre- and post-test phases, using the Kruskal-Wallis test for the inter-group comparison of the pre and post-test phases, with a statistical significance of p<0.05.Results: A significant increase was observed in the peak flow values for the three groups (pre- and post-test);with a significant reduction in the systolic blood pressure for group A and higher heart rates and respiration rates in group B. The inter-group analysis presented a statistically significant reduction in the diastolic blood pressure for group C.

ABSTRACT

Surya Namaskar (SN), a popular traditional Indian yogic practice called “Sun Salutations”, includes practice of twelve physical postures involving alternate backward bending and forward bending postures. The practice of twelve postures in succession makes one round of its practice. Many people practise it as part of their daily physical fitness regimen. No study is available to compare cardiorespiratory responses of SN with bicycle exercise (BE). 20 healthy Yoga instructors practicing various Yogic practices including SN since last 7-8 years participated in the study. They performed SN in the laboratory according to their customary daily practice routine. The subject also performed incremental load bicycle exercise test till exhaustion on their second visit for measuring their 􀀅 V O2 max. SN and BE were compared at three similar exercise intensity levels in terms of % of 􀀅 V O2 max. The exercise intensities were light (10-20% 􀀅 V O2 max), moderate (21-40% 􀀅 V O2 max) and high intensities (41-50% 􀀅 V O2 max). Heart rate at high work intensity was significantly higher in BE than SN (P<.001). Ventilation and carbon dioxide output were significantly higher in BE than SN at high exercise intensity (P<0.001). Overall, cardiorespiratory stress is less in SN than BE at similar work intensities

ABSTRACT

Objective To investigate acute effects of anaerobic exercises by a bicycle ergometer on arterial elastic modulus and local hemodynamics in human common carotid arteries with different genders. Methods Nine male and eight female healthy young volunteers at the age of 20-30 year-old successively underwent four groups of exercise trainings with the same workload by an anaerobic bicycle ergometer. The waveforms of arterial diameter and center-line blood velocity were measured in the right common carotid artery using a color Ultrasonic Doppler for each group when at rest and right after exercise training. The heart rate, systolic and diastolic blood pressures were simultaneously measured in brachial artery using an automatic electronic sphygmomanometer. All the measured data were analyzed based upon the principle of classic hemodynamics. The arterial elastic modulus and local hemodynamic parameters, including pressure-strain elastic modulus, flow rate, circumferential strain, wall shear stress and oscillatory shear index (OSI), were then calculated. Results The heart rate and arterial elastic modulus increased after exercises; with the accumulative exercises, in one cardiac cycle, the maximum and mean center-line velocity and flow rate increased while the minimum velocity and flow rate decreased; the systolic and mean blood pressure increased while diastolic blood pressure exhibited no significant change; no significant change could be found in the circumferential strain; the maximum and mean shear stress increased significantly while the minimum shear stress reduced; the oscillatory shear index also increased. Conclusions The anaerobic exercises by a bicycle ergometer may increase the arterial elastic modulus and induce significant effects on local hemodynamic parameters in common carotid arteries for young volunteers with different genders at the age of 20 30 year old. The results in this study could provide useful hemodynamic information for regulation of cerebrovascular function by anaerobic exercises.

ABSTRACT

No total 20 estudos atenderam esses requisitos.

By means of systematic review a surveying of English and Portuguese language studies concerning the expected body positioning for improvement of cycling. Search engines used were LILACS, ScienceDirect, SciELO and MEDLINE. The keywords used to find relevant papers were: posicionamento corporal + ciclismo; ajuste + bicicleta; postura + ciclismo; body positioning + cycling; bicycle fitting; cycling posture. Original papers, short review papers, master thesis and books published from 1993 to 2009 (October) were considered when the main subject of discussion was the topic of interest. A total of 20 studies were considered. In general, the studies suggest that is will be useful to know about the bicycle fitting. Even so protocols for body positioning evaluation are available, most of studies concluded that cyclists are not able to use this protocol correctly. It suggests the difficult to access studies.
