ABSTRACT

Malignant melanoma( MM) is a very malignant solid tumor that is highly invasive and has a poor prognosis. Al-though the treatment of advanced melanoma has entered the era of targeting and immunotherapy, chemotherapy is still not to be aban-doned. Chemotherapy for malignant melanoma has undergone a development process from single-drug chemotherapy, combination of two or three or even four drugs, and biochemotherapy. This article reviews the progress of chemotherapy for malignant melanoma,com-pares the main chemotherapy regimens, and looks forward into the future direction of chemotherapy.

ABSTRACT

Chemoimmunotherapy or biochemotherapy, the combination of chemotherapy with immunotherapy, is a novel compre-hensive treatment model for malignant carcinoma. In recent years, many clinical trials have shown that biochemotherapy is associated with an improved response rate. Such biological agents include tumor vaccines, monoclonal antibodies, cytokines, and immunocompe-tent cells. In this article, we review the theories, sort the clinical applications of novel treatments, and discuss some of the problems existing in this field.

ABSTRACT

Objective To evaluate the effect of biochemotherapy (?-interferon or recombinant interleukin 2 plus 5-fluorouracil) in the treatment of renal cell carcinoma (RCC) after nephrectomy. Methods Thirty-six patients with RCC admitted during 1993 and 1996 were randomly divided into two groups; the treatment group (combined nephrectomy and biochemotherapy) and control group with nephrectomy alone. Results Biochemotherapy did not show significant effect on five-year survival rate in those patients with the lower grading (Ⅰ, Ⅱ stages) RCC or with negative expression of matrix metalloproteinases 2 and 9 (MMP 2,MMP 9). On the other hand, this treatment regimen showed good clinical results in the higher grading (Ⅲ, Ⅳ stages) cancer patients, and the five-year survival rate was higher in the patients with positive expression of MMP 2 and MMP 9 of RCC than those without biochemotherapy. Conclusion Biochemotherapy is a safe and effective adjunctive treatment for patients with RCC after nephrectomy. Some side-effects should be taken care of. Its doses and administration route should be further studied to enhance the treatment efficacy and reduce side-effects.

ABSTRACT

Biochemotherapy refers to the combination of biotherapy and chemotherapy, and it has been rapidly developed since its emergence.Biochemotherapy has brought both new therapies and new therapeutic ideas for the treatment of malignant tumors. In this article,we reviewed the recent advances in tumor biochemotherapies, including expansion of the indications, retaining of therapy even when tumor progressed(unique to biochemotherapy),and reversal of chemotherapy resistance by targeted therapy, the predicting response to tumor biochemotherapy, recent clinical trials of immunotherapy-based chemotherapy, and evaluation criteria for assessment of biochemotherapy response, and so on.

ABSTRACT

Purpose:To investigate the effectiveness of intralymphatic infusion of anti- cancer agents and cytokines in the treatmrnt of malignancy.Materials anti methods:23 patients suffering from advanced metastatic cancers anti 2 primary lymphomas, unresponsble to the standard therapies or intra-arterial chemotherapy, were treated with lymphatic injections of an- ticancer ddrugs or combiation with biochemotherapy.Results:Follow-up study about one month after the therapy, comparing with findings on lymthatic radiographies anti computed tomographic scans, revealed decrease of lymphnodes in size in 23 cases. Conclusion:This therapeutic ap- proach proved to be an effective and safe method for the palliative treatment of advanced lym- phatic metastases and lymphomas. The procedure was feasible without serious compllications.

ABSTRACT

Objective To compare the short-term and long-term efficacy of chemotherapy with biotherapy and same chemotherapy followed by biotherapy on malignant melanoma in stage Ⅲ and Ⅳ.Methods 82 cases with malignant melanoma were treated with chemotherapy(dacarbazing,cis-platin and carmustine)or biotherapy(interleukin-2,interferon ? and dendritic cell vaccine)or biochemotherapy(chemotherapy plus biotherapy).Among them,32 cases were received biochemotherapy,26 for biotherapy and 24 for chemotherapy.Therapentic response was assessed every 3 cycles. The median time of follow up was 2 years(1-4 years). Results Response rate was 71.9% for biochemotherapy,46.2% for biotherapy and 54.2% for chemotherapy(P
