ABSTRACT

Purpose: To report age?related variations in corneal stress–strain index (SSI) in healthy Indians. Methods: It was a retrospective study where healthy Indian individuals aged between 11 and 70 years who had undergone corneal biomechanics assessment using Corvis ST between January 2017 and December 2021 were enrolled. Composite corneal biomechanical parameters and corneal SSI were abstracted from Corvis ST and compared across different age groups using one?way analysis of variance (ANOVA). Also, Pearson’s correlation was used to evaluate the association between age and SSI. Results: Nine hundred and thirty?six eyes of 936 patients with ages between 11 and 77 years with mean ± SD intraocular pressure (IOP) and pachymetry of 16.52 ± 2.10 mmHg and 541.13 ± 26.39 ?s, respectively. Composite corneal biomechanical parameters such as deformation amplitude ratio max at 1 mm (P < 0.001) and 2 mm (P < 0.001), biomechanically corrected IOP (P = 0.004), stiffness parameter at A1 (P < 0.001, Corvis biomechanical index (P < 0.018), and SSI (P < 0.001) were found to be significantly different as a function of age group. We noted a statistically significant positive association of SSI with age (P < 0.001), spherical equivalent refractive error (P < 0.001), and IOP (P < 0.001) and a significant negative association with anterior corneal astigmatism (P < 0.001) and Anterior chamber depth (ACD) (P < 0.001). Also, SSI was positively associated with SPA1 and bIOP, whereas negatively associated with integrated radius, max inverse radius, and Max Deformation amplitude (DA) ratio at 1 mm and 2 mm. Conclusion: We noted a positive association of corneal SSI with age in normal healthy Indian eyes. This information could be helpful for future corneal biomechanical research.

ABSTRACT

AIM: To study the characteristics of new corneal biomechanical parameters in different degrees of myopia and analyze the correlation of the new parameter stress-strain index(SSI).METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted on 366 adult patients(718 eyes)with different degrees of myopia who received treatment at the First Affiliated Hospital of Dali University from October 2021 to November 2021, aged 18-50 years, and the spherical equivalent(SE)was -0.50~-16.75D. The axial length(AL)of the eye was measured by IOL master, and the new corneal biomechanical parameters, central corneal thickness(CCT)and intraocular pressure(IOP)were measured by corneal visualization Scheimpflug technology(Corvis ST). The subjects were categorized into low myopia, moderate myopia and high myopia groups according to SE. The data were analyzed by ANOVA and Pearson correlation.RESULTS: The ratio of the thinnest corneal thickness to horizontal thickness change rate(ARTh)and SSI were statistically significant(P<0.001), while the remaining parameters were not statistically significant(P>0.05). SSI was positively correlated with age(r=0.102, P=0.006), SE(r=0.361, P<0.001), IOP(r=0.175, P<0.001), CCT(r=0.098, P=0.009), SPA1(r=0.182, P<0.001), negatively correlated with AL(r=-0.331, P<0.001), IR(r=-0.545, P<0.001)and had no correlation with other corneal biomechanical parameters(P>0.05).CONCLUSION: With the increase of myopia degree and the elongation of the axial length, the SSI value becomes smaller and the corneal hardness decreases. SSI may be a helpful corneal biomechanical indicator for future research on myopia.

ABSTRACT

Spinal manipulation is a manual treatment technique that delivers a thrust, using specific biomechanical parameters to exert its therapeutic effects. These parameters have been shown to have a unique dose-response relationship with the physiological responses of the therapy. So far, however, there has not been a unified approach to standardize these biomechanical characteristics. In fact, it is still undetermined how they affect the observed clinical outcomes of spinal manipulation. This study, therefore, reviewed the current body of literature to explore these dosage parameters and evaluate their significance, with respect to physiological and clinical outcomes. From the experimental studies reviewed herein, it is evident that the modulation of manipulation's biomechanical parameters elicits transient physiological responses, including changes in neuronal activity, electromyographic responses, spinal stiffness, muscle spindle responses, paraspinal muscle activity, vertebral displacement, and segmental and intersegmental acceleration responses. However, to date, there have been few clinical trials that tested the therapeutic relevance of these changes. In addition, there were some inherent limitations in both human and animal models due to the use of mechanical devices to apply the thrust. Future studies evaluating the effects of varying biomechanical parameters of spinal manipulation should include clinicians to deliver the therapy in order to explore the true clinical significance of the dose-response relationship.

ABSTRACT

Objective To extract key parameters from a series of biomechanical parameters of rowing technique, so as to provide useful information for coach training. Methods Based on rowing performance of 16 rowers in national team, the factor analysis was used to extract reducing dimension of biomechanical parameters of rowing technique of 80 oxygen utilisation 2 (UT2) training pieces. Results The biomechanical parameters of rowing techniques were classified as technical characteristic factors (angle of 70% peak force, work portion of per 25% stroke length, drive start time, finish slip, position of peak force and angle of peak force), power factor (rower power, average of boat power, port swivel power and stroke swivel power), stroke length factor (catch angle and finish angle) and oar’s motion factor (recovery time, stroke rate and distance of per stroke). Conclusions Monitoring and analyzing these biomechanical factors would contribute coaches and scientific researchers to accurately judge the technical characteristics and shortcomings of rowers.

ABSTRACT

Knee osteoarthritis is a common chronic degenerative disease in the elderly. Its occurrence and development are closely related to biomechanical factors. The force of knee joint is affected by different factors, such as joint morphology, lower limb alignment, muscle contractions, external load, soft tissue traction and so on. Due to the limitation of in vivo measurement, biomechanical parameters based on motion analysis techniques have been widely used in clinical research. At present, biomechanical parameters which are widely studied and applied in clinical research include knee adduction moment, knee adduction impulse, knee flexion moment, and knee varus thrust. It is important to observe the changes of knee joint biomechanical parameters during the occurrence and development of knee osteoarthritis for researching etiology, diagnosis, intervention and treatment.

ABSTRACT

Glaucoma is one of the leading causes of blindness worldwide.Various factors are related to the development and progression of glaucoma.High intraocular pressure is an important risk factor. In recent years, many studies have focused on other potential risk factors for glaucoma, such as intraocular pressure-independent factors, including vascular factors, central corneal thickness, etc. The relationship between corneal biomechanical parameters and glaucoma has been attracting more and more attentions. The corneal biomechanics measurement instruments include ocular response analyzer (ORA) and corneal visualization scheimpflug technology (Corvis-ST),which are all commonly used in clinical practice. Some studies showed that the corneas in glaucoma patients were more easily to deform.Corneal biomechanical characteristics may reflect the anatomic structure weakness of the eyeball. For example, more easily deforming of cornea results in smaller tolerance of sclera and lamina cribros to intraocular pressure, which makes the optic disc more vulnerable. This may be one of the causes of glaucomatous optic nerve damage.Corneal biomechanical parameters have a certain extent relationship with the severity of glaucoma. In order to probe into the pathogenesis of glaucoma deeply,we reviewed corneal biomechanics characteristics, application of corneal biomechanical properties measuring instruments in clinical practice and the relationships between corneal biomechanics characteristics and the development and progression of glaucoma,as well as the therapeutic effectiveness of glaucoma.

ABSTRACT

AbstractIntroduction: The maintenance of balance and body orientation during standing is essential to perform different activities. One of the devices used to measure balance them is the force platform. This device measures the ground reaction force (GRF) and displacement of the center of pressure (COP), both biomechanical parameters involved in human motion. This article proposes a new design for non-commercial low-cost force platforms for scientific research purposes. Methods for calibration and validation are also described. Methods A force platform, developed according to International Standards of Measurement and dedicated to measuring feet contact forces was built for approximately one tenth of the cost of commercial platforms. Calibration was performed by loading known masses, centralized or distributed, on the platform. An experimental study was conducted with four volunteers in different conditions to validate and verify the practical applicability of the device. Results The platform calibration showed an adequate connectivity, linearity and reliable measurement of the variables proposed in this research, being suitable for studies of human postural behavior. Conclusion Based on the validation results, we believe the low-cost platform can be used as stabilometric device to measure postural control and balance in clinical or sports experiments. However future studies will be required to provide a final validation and compare its performance with other force platforms.

ABSTRACT

Predictors of performance in adult swimmers are constantly changing during youth especially because the training routine begins even before puberty in the modality. Therefore this study aimed to determine the group of parameters that best predict short and middle swimming distance performances of young swimmers of both genders. Thirty-three 10-to 16-years-old male and female competitive swimmers participated in the study. Multiple linear regression (MLR) was used considering mean speed of maximum 100, 200 and 400 m efforts as dependent variables, and five parameters groups as possible predictors (anthropometry, body composition, physiological and biomechanical parameters, chronological age/pubic hair). The main results revealed explanatory powers of almost 100% for both genders and all performances, but with different predictors entered in MLR models of each parameter group or all variables. Thus, there are considerable differences in short and middle swimming distance, and males and females predictors that should be considered in training programs.
