ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT

Bioremediation is considered as a cost-effective, efficient and free-of-secondary-pollution technology for petroleum pollution remediation. Due to the limitation of soil environmental conditions and the nature of petroleum pollutants, the insufficient number and the low growth rate of indigenous petroleum-degrading microorganisms in soil lead to long remediation cycle and poor remediation efficiency. Bioaugmentation can effectively improve the biodegradation efficiency. By supplying functional microbes or microbial consortia, immobilized microbes, surfactants and growth substrates, the remediation effect of indigenous microorganisms on petroleum pollutants in soil can be boosted. This article summarizes the reported petroleum-degrading microbes and the main factors influencing microbial remediation of petroleum contaminated soil. Moreover, this article discusses a variety of effective strategies to enhance the bioremediation efficiency, as well as future directions of bioaugmentation strategies.

ABSTRACT

The bio-stimulation of hydrocarbon degrading microbial population in soil using agricultural wastes was carried out. Top soil (0-25 cm depth) from three points were bulked to form composite soil samples, 6 kg each of the composite soil sample was weighed and transferred into 150 plastic buckets with drainage holes at the base. The soil in each plastic bucket was spiked with 300 ml crude oil and amended with different concentrations of agro-wastes and allowed for duration of 30, 60 and 90 days. The soil samples were then collected and analysed for both total heterotrophic bacterial counts and crude-oil utilizing bacterial counts. Data collected were subjected to a three-way analysis of variance and significant means were separated using Least Significant Difference Test at 5% probability level. The result showed that the application of the amendments increased the bacterial counts in the soil at different treatment levels. However, a higher proliferation rate was observed with bacteria counts exposed to higher waste concentrations compared to their counterparts exposed to lower waste concentrations. The phylogenetic relationship of the hydrocarbon degrading bacterial species shows that the identified bacteria were in two clusters: cluster 1 consist of Bacillus cereus, Bacillus thuringiensis, Bacillus altitudinis, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Proteus mirabilis and Proteus penneri, while cluster 2 consist of Serratia marcescens, Providencia rettgeri and Enterobacter asburiae. The bacterial species obtained shows a greater relationship, this imply that the similarity of the bacterial species could be the reason for their high proficiency in degrading the hydrocarbons in the soil.

ABSTRACT

This study sought to investigate the potential of sugarcane bagasse, poultry manure and their combination in the remediation of spent motor oil contaminated soil. About 1.5 L of spent motor oil was sprinkled on plots measuring 0.5 m x 0.5 m dimension in 12 replicate plots to simulate a major spill. Poultry dung (PD), Sugarcane bagasse (SB) and hybrid of bagasse and Poultry dung (SB - PD) were applied as organic amendments and bulking agents. The amendments were randomly administered twice within two weeks to treatment plots except the control at rate of 24tons/ha. The soil was tilled to enhance aeration and watered twice a week for 56 days. A significant decrease in Total Petroleum Hydrocarbon, TPH of 61, 53, 46 and 23% for PD, SB - PD, SB and Control plots respectively was observed. TOC and TN decreased in all the plots except the control. Soil moisture contents between 21 and 24% while soil pH within the range of 6.9 to 7.5 enhanced biodegradation process. The Total Heterotrophic Bacterial Counts (THBC) varied in all the plots while heavy metals content remained unchanged during the study. The application of these biostimulants gave promising results on hydrocarbons removal from contaminated soil.

ABSTRACT

The National Plan for Solid Waste has set out to reduce by 25% the amount of organic waste disposed of in landfills, mostly food residues from street fairs, besides determining the implementation of municipal composting plants, and it also mentions improving the capacity of plants already installed. The purpose of the study was to analyze which decomposing fungi are involved in the different composting phases, in a plant located in the city of São Paulo. Data was collected in four composting seasons from 2016 to 2017 and the analysis of 49 samples showed twelve genera belonging to the Ascomycetes and Zygomycetes phyla, but only at the mesophilic phase. In all seasons, yeasts and Aspergillus fumigatus were predominant with a total count of 1.0 x 109 cfu g-1 and 7.4 x 108 cfu g-1, respectively. These fungi can be applied in future studies of biostimulation to optimize the cycle at the municipal plant.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT Bioremediation has proven to be an alternative to establishing new wastewater treatment systems and optimizing the existing conventional systems. The objective of this review paper is to identify and analyze the key factors in bioremediation processes for wastewater treatment worldwide. A systematic review method of literature was used, which included a citation frequency index using quartiles (Q). The results showed the existence of six key factors in bioremediation processes for wastewater treatment: pH (Q3) > temperature (Q2) > oxygen (Q2) > nitrogen (Q2) > phosphorus (Q1) > BOD5 (Q1). There were no significant differences between bioaugmentation and biostimulation technologies in relation to the six key factors identified. A trend in the use of some of these technologies was not demonstrated at the global level. However, in Asia, Europe, and North America there was a greater report on the use of bioaugmentation technology; and in South America and Africa, there was a greater report of biostimulation technology. Bioremediation technologies (Q1) were probably in an initial phase of development and application in wastewater treatment systems because chemical (Q2) and physical technologies (Q2) presented a larger worldwide report. Finally, the results of this study are a reference point for environmental institutions responsible for water quality control, and designers and supervisors in water treatment systems.

ABSTRACT

Objective: The objective of the study was to compare the clinical efficacy of use of a diode laser (DL) (810 nm) as an adjunct to modified Widman flap (MWF) surgery to that of MWF alone. Materials and Methods: Twenty‑five patients between the ages of 20 and 50 years with generalized chronic periodontitis were selected for the study. Control sites (Group A) were randomly selected to receive an MWF, and the contralateral test sites (Group B) received MWF in conjunction with low‑level laser therapy. The energy density of 4 J/cm2 was applied to the gingival surface after periodontal treatment. The study tooth/site was treated along with any additional teeth in the quadrant in which the site was located if needed. Randomization was done using a coin flip. The DL was used to de‑epithelialize the inner part of the periodontal flap and photo‑biostimulate the surgical area. Plaque index (PI), papillary bleeding index (PBI), probing depth (PD), and clinical attachment level (CAL) scores were recorded at baseline and at 6 and 9 months. Statistical Analysis: Data were expressed as the mean ± standard deviation. Statistical analyzes were performed using paired Student’s t‑test for intragroup comparisons and unpaired Student’s t‑test for intergroup comparisons. Results: No significant difference was observed in PI scores between the two groups at baseline, 6 and 9 months. PBI scores were significantly lower in Group B versus Group A at 6 months (P < 0.01). However, no significant difference was observed between the two groups in PBI scores at the end of 9 months. PD reduction in Group B versus Group A was statistically significant at the end of 9 months (P < 0.01). Gains in CAL were significantly greater in Group B versus Group A at 6 and 9 months. Conclusion: The use of an 810 nm DL provided additional benefits to MWF surgery in terms of clinical parameters.

ABSTRACT

This article describes about a biological approach in the repair of dental pulp and periapical tissues using biomaterials (platelet rich fibrin [PRF] and mineral trioxide aggregate [MTA]) and laser biostimulation. Case 1: Pulpotomy with PRF, MTA, and laser biostimulation. Patient follow-up was done at 1, 3, and 6 months. On 6 months follow-up, the patient was asymptomatic and tooth responded positively to pulp tests. Radiograph revealed normal periodontal ligament space and trabecular bone pattern. Case 2: Apexification procedure using PRF, MTA, and laser biostimulation in 31 and 41. Patient follow-up was done at 1, 3, and 6 months. On 6 months follow-up, radiograph revealed relative root lengthening, thickening of the canal walls in the apical one-third of root, and a healing lesion. Repair and regenerative potential of PRF, an enhanced cellular metabolism with laser biostimulation in combination with the sealing ability of MTA enhances the clinical success outcomes in pulpotomy and apexification procedures.

ABSTRACT

Biostimulation with rich plasma in platelets is an outpatient technique for the prevention and management of skin aging, which is based on the physiology of the skin, and works very well alone or in a combined treatment plan. Own patient derivate blood stimulates production of collagen, elastin and skin tissue, resulting in a smoother skin, brighter and better quality. Risks of bruising, infection, disease transmission or allergic reactions are minimal.

ABSTRACT

The biostimulation process was evaluated in a hydrocarbon contaminated soil by respirometry after amendment with inorganic compound fertilizer (ICF) (N:P:K 28:12:7) and simple inorganic salts (SIS) (NH4NO3 and K2HPO4). The soil was contaminated with oily sludge (40,000 mgTPH/kgdw). The oxygen uptake was measured using two respirometers (HACH® 2173b and OXITOP® PF600) during thirteen days (n=3). Two treatments (ICF and SIS) and three controls (abiotic, reference substance and without nutrients) were evaluated during the study. Physicochemical (pH, nutrients, and TPH) and microbiological analysis (heterotrophic and hydrocarbon-utilizing microorganisms) were obtained at the beginning and at the end of each assay. Higher respiration rates were recorded in SIS and without nutrient control. Results were 802.28 and 850.72-1d-1,mgO2kgps-1d-1 in HACH, while in OXITOP were 936.65 and 502.05 mgO2kgps respectively. These data indicate that amendment of nutrients stimulated microbial metabolism. ICF had lower respiration rates (188.18 and 139.87 mgO2kgps-1d-1 in HACH and OXITOP, respectively) as well as counts, this could be attributed to ammonia toxicity.

ABSTRACT

The anthracene, as well as the others polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH), can be removed from the soil by bioremediation, whose efficiency is limited under unfavorable physical and chemical conditions to the survival and activity of the microbial degraders. The objective of this study was to evaluate the influence of pH, water content, and nitrogen, phosphorus, iron and sulfur concentrations in the bioremediation of a soil contaminated with anthracene. Samples of a sandy soil were contaminated in laboratory with anthracene (500mg kg-1) and the mineralization was evaluated by respirometry. The highest anthracene mineralization was verified in the soil with the highest water content and pH value studied. The addition of 100kg ha-1 nitrogen in the soil and the consequent reduction of CPAH-N ratio to values lesser than 120:17 reduced anthracene mineralization. The increase of phosphorus iron and sulfur availability and wide CPAH-P (120:1 to 120:22) ratios in the soil did not influence anthracene mineralization. The pH correction and appropriate water supply made possible the bioremediation of the soil polluted with anthracene in a short period of time.

ABSTRACT

This work investigated the possibility of using vinasse as an amendment in ex-situ bioremediation processes. Groundwater and soil samples were collected at petrol stations. The soil bioremediation was simulated in Bartha biometer flasks, used to measure the microbial CO2 production, during 48 days, where vinasse was added at a concentration of 33 mL.Kg-1of soil. Biodegradation efficiency was also measured by quantifying the total petroleum hydrocarbons (TPH) by gas chromatography. The groundwater bioremediation was carried out in laboratory experiments simulating aerated (bioreactors) and not aerated (BOD flasks) conditions. In both the cases, the concentration of vinasse was 5 percent (v/v) and different physicochemical parameters were evaluated during 20 days. Although an increase in the soil fertility and microbial population were obtained with the vinasse, it demonstrated not to be adequate to enhance the bioremediation efficiency of diesel oil contaminated soils. The addition of the vinasse in the contaminated groundwaters had negative effects on the biodegradation of the hydrocarbons, since vinasse, as a labile carbon source, was preferentially consumed.

ABSTRACT

This study was carried out on the bioremediation of used motor oil contaminated soil artificially contaminated to a pollutant level of 40,000ppm using biostimulation and bioaugmentation remediation techniques for 42 days. Four treatment options were investigated in wooden microcosms: Control (T1), water amended (T2), biostimulation (T3) and hybrid of biostimulation and bioaugmentation (T4). The effectiveness of bioremediation processes were monitored using the total petroleum hydrocarbon removal (TPH) and total bacterial count (TBC). T3 had the highest TPH removal rate (69.2±0.05 percent), followed by T4 (65.2±0.25 percent) and T2 (58.4±0.5 percent); the control (T1) had the lowest TPH removal rate (43.2±1.5 percent). TBC revealed that bioremediation actually took place; T4 had the highest maximum bacterial growth of 9.6E+07CFU/g, followed by T3 (7.2E+07CFU/g), T2 (1.7E+05CFU/g) and T1 (1.65E+05CFU/g). In addition, T3 had the highest metal removal rate (2.172 percent) and T4 had the lowest metal removal rate (0.203 percent).

ABSTRACT

The present study tested the effect of biostimulation by bull exposure on the early postpartum reproductive performance of well fed and permanently suckled Angus cows. At 1 week postpartum, 90 Angus cows with no history of calving problems and their calves were allocated by parity, body weight, and body frame into 3 isolated groups of 30 cows each. Cows from groups A and B were permanently exposed to mature bulls (BE) while cows from Group C (NE) served as a control. Analyzed variables included; intervals from calving to resumption of ovarian activity (ICR), and first behavioral estrus (ICE), length of the first estrous cycle (ECL), number of cows showing estrus/group, and number of estrus periods (NEP) occurred per cow during the 90 days previous to the breeding season. The ICR (38.1 ± 3.4 vs 51.0 ± 4.4; P<0.02) and ICE (38.1 ± 3.4 vs 59.9 ± 2.5; P<0.001) were shorter in BE than in NE cows, and no differences between bull-exposed groups were found. More BE cows resumed reproductive cyclicity with normal ECL than NE cows (A= 16/53%, B=16/53%, C=8/26.6%; P<0.01). During trial, more BE cows showed behavioral estrus than NE cows (A: 29/30= 97%, B: 30/30 =100%, and C: 24/30 = 80%; P<0.002). Similarly, NEP recorded in BE cows was greater than that of NE cows (A=70, B=68, and C=42; P<0.0002). More BE cows (P< 0.001) had 3 estrous periods during trial. It was concluded that, even under conditions involving adequate nutrition and permanent suckling, there was a positive effect of biostimulation on early reproductive performance in postpartum Angus cows.

ABSTRACT

The Low Level Laser Therapy (LLLT) has demostrated to have analgesic, antiinflamatory, bioestimulant and promoters from the tissues responses properties to the damage. The purpose of this study was determinate the Low Level Laser Therapy effect in the damaged alveolar bone. Thirteen Sprage Dawley rats were used. Total number of animals alveolar bones a standarized lesion was made, later an aleatory sample of seven rats was subjected to the irradiation protocol 6 J/cm², three times per week during four weeks. The obtained samples of the injured area, of exposed and not exposed rats to the laser therapy were processed for hematoxilin & eosin, being the osteon number count by optic microscope with increase of 40x. The result show an increase in the osteon number in the irradiated group, this differentiated was statistically significant (p<0.01), whit a high strength of statistical association (OR=5.6). These result suggest that the therapy laser of low power favors the answer of the damaged alveolar bone.

ABSTRACT

The laser use has had a constant evolution and development; the bioestimulantion effects have been verified in numerous studies that the irradiation laser of fall promotes produces on having interacted with cells and tissues This study tries to determine the morphologic differences in the oral mucous injured, after the application of low-level laser, across changes in the vascular density of the subpapilar plexus of the mucous oral. Fifteen Sprague Dawley mice were used, which formed three groups, in the total number of animals the oral mucous was injured, in the average zone of the labial low frenum. Group I was taken as a control; in group II a low-level laser was applied on the mucous immediately the oral injury, then, at 48 after 24 hours in a dose of 6 Joule/cm² for application; Group III a low-level laser in a single dose of 18 Joule/cm² was applied immediately the oral injury. The unit of sample and analysis they were the histological cuts obtained of the section of the oral mucous injured. The results show a major vascular density in the group the II with regard to the group I and the III, with a density I mediate of 4,07 vassels/25mm², while the group I of 2,47 vassels/25mm² and group II of 1,87 vassels/25mm². No find differences between groups I and III. These results indicate that the application of low-level laser in low dose originate an increase in the vascular density in the oral mucous injured.

ABSTRACT

With the development of industrialization, the problem of oil-contamination to the soil is getting more and more serious. How to clear up or remove the oil-contaminants from the soil becomes an important environmental problem for all countries around the world.Bioremediation,as the methods with fast and safe in processing, low cost and non-secondary contamination,is becoming the main solution to soil environment by oil contamination.Biostimulation and bioaugmentation are most commonly used techniques in bioremediation. The theory of bioremediation, including the concept and method of biostimulation and bioaugmentation were introduced, and advance study and progress in this field from the world in recently years were demenstrated. Both of the two methods can lead a significant decrease in soli TPH content, but the efficiency relates to many factors.Accordingly, the bioremediation technique should be tailored specifically to each polluted site.
