ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT Cyanotoxin contamination is of special interest in water bodies, especially those for human use, due to the various negative effects that blooms of potentially toxic cyanobacteria can cause on human health. Given the recreational and supply importance of the Abreo - Malpaso, Peñol - Guatapé and Playas reservoirs in the Department of Antioquia, Colombia. This study has estimated the biomass of the planktonic cyanobacteria, their geometric biovolume, the surface volume ratio (S / V) and the maximum linear dimension (MLD), during four sampling seasons in three different stations for each of these bodies. Water. We have identified from the Cyanophyta division with the production of cyanotoxins, the Microcystis complex and generates Woronichinia, Aphanocapsa and Oscillatoria, as well as the species Radiocystis fernandoi. When applying the nonparametric Kruskal - Wallis test, no significant differences were found between the studied reservoirs (p> 0.05); however, the Peñol - Guatapé reservoir presented the highest algae biomass and density of cyanobacteria, therefore, according to the levels of risk posed for the reservoirs studied and according to the morphological characteristics of these organisms, this reservoir presents a High Medium risk level in relation to the presence and morphology of the cyanobacteria, while the Abreo-Malpaso and Playas reservoirs are associated with a Medium Low risk. It is suggested to establish control and prevention measures to avoid a massive development of cyanobacteria, a possible presence of cyanotoxins and serious affectations in humans and animals.

ABSTRACT

AbstractFunctional morphology corresponds to adaptive responses to changes in the environment. In phytoplankton, traits such as the development of mucilage, oil vesicles, filaments and variation in the surface/volume ratio, allow algae to deal with sedimentation, optimizing light and nutrient uptake. The aim of this research was to evaluate the relationship between traits and variation in physical and chemical conditions in Tota Lake (Boyacá, Colombia). For this, ten samplings were undertaken in a monthly basis between October 2013 and July 2014. We measured water pH, conductivity, temperature, dissolved oxygen, oxygen saturation, alkalinity and total hardness; we also quantified Total Kjeldahl nitrogen and Total phosphorus. Algae were collected at different depths according to Secchi transparency. Taxonomic composition and abundance were estimated by the chamber sedimentation method. Morphological traits were measured for each taxa according to geometric models, allowing traits classification into morphologically based functional groups (MBFG) and having algae biomass expressed as biovolume. The variables were evaluated through Principal Components Analysis, which included time-space effect and it was interpreted according to variation in water level. Through Canonical Correspondence Analysis we established the relationship between phytoplankton biovolume accumulated in form categories and environmental variables. The ordination showed that limnological conditions are influenced by seasonal changes, which are mainly represented by oxygen saturation percentage, Secchi transparency, TKN, hardness and alkalinity. Four MBFG were found: IV, V, VI and VII, being MBFG IV and VII the most representatives. ACC was significant (Monte-Carlo Test, p<0.05). In conclusion, the morphological and functional response of phytoplankton in Tota Lake is driven by short-term variability in transparency, phosphorus, nitrogen, hardness, and electrical conductivity, which are all affected by seasonal changes in the lake level.

ABSTRACT

Abstract This study aimed to evaluate nutrients concentration and spatial-temporal changes in phytoplankton biovolume during an experimental fish culture in net cages in a lateral arm of Salto Caxias reservoir, Brazil. Two sampling stations were placed in the affected lateral arm and other two in a cageless lateral arm. Neither abiotic variables nor phytoplankton biovolume presented significant differences between the treatments. Only temporal changes were confirmed by the analysis performed. Both lateral arms were classified as oligotrophic, reflecting low influence of the net cages. Phytoplankton growth seems to be limited by nitrogen. Biovolume values were, in general, low and five major functional groups were recognized (E, F, G, K and P). In summer higher biovolume values were observed and representatives of Chlorophyceae and Cyanobacteria belonging to the functional groups F and K, respectively, were the most important. In winter phytoplankton was mainly composed by Bacillariophyceae taxa from P group. G group was also restricted to winter and E group occurred in winter and summer. The variations recorded in phytoplankton structure appear to have been mainly influenced by seasonal changes in temperature, precipitation and nutrients availability. The effects of net cages on the abiotic variables and phytoplankton biovolume appear to have been small, probably due to the small number of net cages employed and the system dilution capacity. However, a permanent monitoring of phytoplankton is recommended, since this environment has a carrying capacity, from which the trophic state may increase.

ABSTRACT

Along the horizontal axis of reservoirs are generally recognized three zones (fluvial, transition and lacustrine) with distinct hydrodynamic and physical, chemical and biological properties. Quarterly samplings were conducted in 2002, in the limnetic region from each zone, at different depths of a tropical reservoir. To test the hypothesis that highest biomass (biovolume) of phytoplankton are found in the transition zone, the PERMANOVA analysis was realized. 106 taxa were recorded. Significant differences between biovolume values of the three zones were not verified (pseudo F = 0,89; p = 0,55). Higher values of biomass were obtained in lacustrine and transition zones of the reservoir. The functional group (FG) N (Cosmarium spp.) was dominant in these zones, in rain period, and related to low phosphorus concentration, high transparency and water column stability. Low biovolume values in reservoir characterized oligotrophic conditions in all zones of the reservoir, most of the period. The dominance of FGs Y, Lo, E, P and A, as evidenced by the CCA, was associated with low light availability and higher nutrients concentrations.

ABSTRACT

This study evaluated the influence of physical, chemical and physico-chemical variables of water on the biomass of periphyton community and verified the differences between six sampling sites over the course of São Mateus river: two upstream of the city of São Mateus, Espírito Santo State (E1, E2), two along (E3, E4), and two downstream of the city (E5, E6). The periphyton was collected from roots of Eichhornia crassipes (Mart.) Solms. Samplings were undertaken every week in September and October 2010. The periphyton biomass was estimated through chlorophyll 'a', biovolume, dry mass, ash-free dry mass, and ash. Higher values of chlorophyll 'a' were found at E1, while the total biovolume featured greater values in E4 and E3. Regarding the values of periphyton dry mass, the inorganic fraction was higher at sites along and downstream of the city of São Mateus. The variation of periphyton biomass was influenced by the availability of nutrients (phosphorus and nitrogen) and turbidity, as evidenced by the CCA. The results suggest that the input of allochthonous material, especially from human activities (fish farming and discharge of domestic and industrial wastewater), has changed the water quality (as pointed out by the PCA), as well as the communities present.

ABSTRACT

Biovolume calculation of micro algae is commonly used for the assessment in relative abundance (as biomass or carbon) of coexistent algae that vary in shape and/or size. Periphyton samples were obtained within a more general program, in fishery tanks and streams situated in the upper basin region of Tibagi River, nearby Londrina, Paraná state, south of Brazil. The present work proposes new algorithms for the determination of algal species volume. Results showed that Gyrosigma scalproides (Rabenhorst) Cleve 1894 and Tetraedron gracile (Reinsch) Hansgirg 1889 were exceptions inside their genus and the present new formula for biovolume and area gives more adequate results. In addition, new formulas applied for Phacus longicauda (Ehrenberg) Dujardin 1841 and Kirchneriella lunaris (Kirchner) Möbius 1894 also showed much more accurate results than in the previous works. The difference in the calculations of biovolume between the present method and others was not small and could not be neglected.

ABSTRACT

The resilience, ecological function and quality of both agricultural and natural systems were evaluated in the mountainous region of the Atlantic Rain Forest of Rio de Janeiro through Rapid Assessment Methods. For this goal new indicators were proposed, such as eco-volume, eco-height, bio-volume, volume efficiency, and resilience index. The following agricultural and natural systems have been compared according: (i) vegetables (leaf, fruit and mixed); (ii) citrus; (iii) ecological system; (iv) cattle, (v) silvo-pastoral system, (vi) forest fragment and (vii) forest in regeneration stage (1, 2 and 3 years old). An alternative measure (index) of resilience was proposed by considering the actual bio-volume as a function of the potential eco-volume. The objectives and hypotheses were fulfilled; it is shown that there does exist a high positive correlation between resilience index, biomass, energy efficiency and biodiversity. Cattle and vegetable systems have lowest resilience, whilst ecological and silvo-pastoral systems have greatest resilience. This new approach offers a rapid, though valuable assessment tool for ecological studies, agricultural development and landscape planning, particularly in tropical countries.
