ABSTRACT

BackgroundPsychological problems such as depression and anxiety are common in pregnant women, and many studies have found that body image disturbance is closely related to depression and anxiety symptoms. Still, there is large variability in previous findings. ObjectiveTo review the researches on the relation of body image disturbance to depression and anxiety in pregnant women, and to provide a reference for interventions targeting maternal body image disturbance and depression and anxiety symptoms. MethodsOn January 10, 2023, well qualified literature focusing on the relationship between body image disturbance and depression and anxiety symptoms in pregnant women were searched in PubMed, Embase, CINAHL, Web of Science, China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI), VIP databases, Wanfang Data Database and China Biology Medicine disc (CBMdisc) from inception to January 1, 2023. The research content, factors influencing body image disturbance and relevant findings were extracted and summarized for analysis. ResultsA total of 14 articles were included in this review. The body image disturbance in pregnant women was manifested predominantly by an excessive concern about body weight and shape, and was affected by demographic characteristics, sociocultural factors, obstetric factors and other factors. Furthermore, body image disturbance significantly predicted the occurrence of depression, and proved a close relationship with anxiety symptoms. ConclusionBody image disturbance seriously affects the physical functioning and psychological status of pregnant women and may further exacerbate the symptoms of depression and anxiety.

ABSTRACT

Body image flexibility (BIF) is the specific type of psychological flexibility in the research field of body image, which reflects the ability to experience negative body image and related events in an open and acceptive way, and take actions consistent with one's values. Body image is actually not stable. If negative body image could not be adjusted effectively in time, it would develop into body image disturbance (BID), which is one of the core symptoms and psychopathological mechanisms of eating disorder (ED) and body dysmorphic disorder (BDD). BIF is one of the important factors in this development path, gaining more and more attention as a protective factor for body image. So far, most studies focus on eating disorder patients and related sub-clinical populations. Body image-acceptance and action questionnaire is the most widely used measurement. BIF is related to some sample characteristics, such as gender, age and body size.Cultural context also has an impact on it.Positive and negative body image and eating disorder pathological characteristics are also strongly associated with BIF. As to the intervention, the application of mindfulness, acceptance and compassion in treatment may improve BIF. Future studies need to improve the research methods and designs, and pay attention to other samples. More specific interventions need to be developed, of which the therapeutic mechanisms also need to be explored.

ABSTRACT

Body image disturbance (BID) in eating disorders (ED) has always been a focus of intense investigations and debates since its concept was brought out. Experimental studies conducted in clinical ED patients have not only provided insights into the components, mechanisms and roles of BID in ED psychopathology, but also brought changes to relevant theories and concepts. This article provided a review of theoretical and empirical literatures on BID in ED, as well as a summary and analysis of recent developments and future prospects in this field.

ABSTRACT

Objective To explore the prevalence of subthreshold body dysmorphic disorder in an undergraduates sample and investigate the mediating role of self-esteem on big five personality and body image disturbance. Methods A sample of 1 166 undergraduates coming from four different colleges were recruited to complete questionnaire survey. Results The prevalence of subthreshold body dysmorphic disorder in undergraduates was 6.2%.Body image disturbance(35.2± 18.4) was negatively correlated with self-esteem ((29.0±4.3),r=-0.41,P<0.01),positively correlated with neuroticism ((32.9±8.1),r=0.52,P<0.01) while negatively correlated with extraversion (39.6 ± 6.8),openness (39.8 ± 6.4),agreeableness (41.7±4.7) and conscientiousness ((40.1±6.4),r=-0.18,-0.14,-0.14,-0.25;all P<0.01).The mediating role of self-esteem was 19.7%.Conclusion The prevalence of subthreshold body dysmorphic disorder in undergraduates is rather high.Big five personality can directly predict body image disturbance and indirectly predict body image disturbance through the mediating role of self-esteem.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVES: This study was conducted to determine the prevalence of anxiety, depression, and BDD among patients about to undergo cosmetic surgery in the Center for Wellness and Aesthetics from February to September 2011.METHODOLOGY: This descriptive study included 50 patients who were scheduled to undergo cosmetic surgery in the Aesthetic and Wellness Center. Patients who consented to participate, complete the Hospital Anxiety and Depression scale (HADS) and Body Image Disturbance Questionnaire (BIDQ). Those who scored >8 for HADS-A and HADS-D and 3 and above for BIDQ had a follow up diagnostic clinical interview based on the Diagnostic and Statistics Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-IV) for diagnosis.RESULTS: Out of the 50% patients, 76% were female, majority were married (54%) and College graduate (68%). The most common surgical procedure is EVLT (Endovenous Laser Treatment), followed by rhinoplasty and blepharoplasty (16%). 18% of the patients had probable anxiety, 6% depression and 6% BDD. Upon further clinical interview, 2 (4%) were diagnosed with mild BDD, 2 (4%) had panic disorder without agoraphobia and 1 (2%) had generalized anxiety disorder. No patient was clinically depressed. The 3 patients who were positive in BIDQ were likewise positive in HADS-A.CONCLUSION: The prevalence of anxiety was high (18%) in the subject population. However, BDD was lower (4%) than expected in the cosmetic surgery subjects. A high proportion of the participants had significant body image concerns.

ABSTRACT

Objective To examine the effectiveness of cognitive therapy on orthodontic patients with body image disturbance (BID).Methods 21 orthodontic patients with BID in study group re ceived routine orthopedic treatment and cognitive therapy, and 15 orthodontic patients with BID in control group received only routine orthopedic treatment. All patients were tested with Symptom Checklist 90 (SCL-90),Cognitive Bias Questionnaire (CBQ),Self-Rating Depression Scale (SDS),Self-Rating Anxiety Scale (SAS),and Body Image Questionnaire (BIQ) at prior and post treatment. Results SAS and SDS scores in the study group were decreased after treatment, and SDS decrease in the study group was larger than that in control group. The factor scores of both groups on the SCL- 90were decreased after treatment, and most factor scores decrease in study group was larger than that in control group.Three dimensions (except for function impairment) of the BIQ were improved in the study group as compared with control group.Cognitive styles were improved on the study group as compared with control group. Conclusions The cognitive therapy can improve cognitive bias and mental health of patients with BID.
