ABSTRACT

Atraumatic Non-aneurysmal sulcal subarachnoid hemorrhage is very rare. Sulcal subarachnoid hemorrhage (sSAH) is characterized by isolated bleeding in one or a few adjacent sulci. Central sulcus hemorrhage is a rare imaging finding. There are many causes for sSAH. In older patients, sSAH is due to Cerebral Amyloid Angiopathy (CAA), while in younger patients, reversible cerebral vasoconstriction syndrome (RCVS) is the most frequent etiology. Imaging studies help in the evaluation of sSAH. We report a rare case of an isolated central sulcus hemorrhage on computed tomography. sSAH usually occur on the side with acute ischemic stroke, and it is unusual for sSAH to occur on the opposite side of the infarct territory, but in our case sSAH occurred on opposite side, but after a gap of 3 years.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT Background: The long-term effects of schistosomiasis on the glomerulus may contribute to the development of chronic kidney disease. This study aimed to investigate baseline Schistosoma mansoni-Circulating Anodic Antigen (CAA) levels and their association with kidney biomarkers related to podocyte injury and inflammation in long-term follow-up after praziquantel (PZQ) treatment. Methods: Schistosoma infection was diagnosed by detecting CAA in urine using a quantitative assay based on lateral flow using luminescent up-converting phosphor reporter particles. A cutoff threshold of 0.1 pg/mL CAA was used to diagnose Schistosoma infection (baseline) in a low-prevalence area in Ceará, Northeast, Brazil. Two groups were included: CAA-positive and CAA-negative individuals, both of which received a single dose of PZQ at baseline. Urinary samples from 55 individuals were evaluated before (baseline) and at 1, 2, and 3 years after PZQ treatment. At all time points, kidney biomarkers were quantified in urine and adjusted for urinary creatinine levels. Results: CAA-positive patients had increased baseline albuminuria and proteinuria and showed greater associations between kidney biomarkers. CAA levels correlated only with Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor (VEGF) (podocyte injury) levels. Increasing trends were observed for malondialdehyde (oxidative stress), monocyte chemoattractant protein-1 (inflammation marker), and VEGF. In the follow-up analysis, no relevant differences were observed in kidney biomarkers between the groups and different periods. Conclusions: S. mansoni-infected individuals presented subclinical signs of glomerular damage that may reflect podocyte injury. However, no causal effect on long-term renal function was observed after PZQ treatment.

ABSTRACT

Cerebral amyloid angiopathy (CAA) is common in patients with Alzheimer's disease (AD) and may contribute to cerebral hemorrhage. We previously demonstrated that tissue plasminogen activator (tPA) and plasminogen (PLG) accumulated at the periphery of compact amyloid-cored plaques and in the walls of CAA-containing blood vessels in the brains of Tg2576 mice, a widely used AD mouse model. We had also observed that zinc-triggered tPA and PLG induction were observed in mouse cortical cultures. Because zinc also accumulates in amyloid plaques and blood vessel walls in AD brains, we examined whether zinc increases mRNA and protein levels of tPA and PLG in brain endothelial cells and pericytes. Four hours after the exposure of brain endothelial cells (bEnd.3) to 40 microM zinc, the mRNA and protein expressions of tPA and its substrate PLG were significantly increased. In the case of brain pericyte cultures, increases in tPA and PLG expression were also detected 2 hr after treatment. However, amyloid-beta (Abeta)1-42 oligomers did not augment tPA and PLG expression in bEnd.3 cells and pericytes, suggesting that zinc but not Abeta induces tPA and PLG accumulation in CAA found in the AD brain.

ABSTRACT

Myrcia uniflora Barb. Rodr., Myrtaceae, popularly known as "pedra-hume-caá" in Brazil, is sold as dry extracts in capsules or as tinctures for the treatment of diabetes mellitus. Previous phytochemical studies on this species described the occurrence of the flavonoids mearnsitrin and myricitrin. In the present study, the chromatographic profiles of M. uniflora leaves and commercial extracts were determined using HPLC-PAD. Myricitrin was used as an external standard in the development and validation of the HPLC method. The proposed method is simple, rapid and reliable and can be successfully applied in industry for standardization of herbs and phytomedicines commercialised in Brazil as "pedra-hume-caá".

ABSTRACT

Objective To investigate the multi-organ lesions and the occurrence of coronary aneurysms in children with Kawasaki disease(KD).Methods 92 pediatric inpatients with KD were enrolled and studied. The organs involved and coronary aneurysms(CAA)were determined by checking blood routine, urine routine, stool routine, chest X-ray,electrokardiogram,liver function, echocardiogram, and clinical manifestation. Results The incidence of various organs involved in 92 patients with KD:heart 71.7%;lung 37.0%;liver 34.8%;brain 12.0%;kidney 18.5%;gastrointestinal tract 15.2%;spleen 2.2%;gallbladder 1.1%;joints 9.8%.In addition, the rate of two organs involved simultaneously was 40.2%,three and more 34.8%.The incidence of CAA in brain lesion, joints lesion and pericardial effusion complications of KD was 45.5%,44.4%,and 41.7%,respectively.Conclusions The data shows that the incidence of heart involvement in the sick-children with KD is highest, and other organs, such as lung, liver, kidney, gastrointestinal tract, brain and joints are involved in turn. The incidence of 2 and more organs involved simultaneously amounts to75.0%.CAA is the most serious complication of KD.Our study suggests that the incidence of CAA is obviously high in these lesions of brain, joints and pericardial effusion involvement in KD.

ABSTRACT

Objective To study the mechanism of Bushen Granule (G ranule for rein forcing the kidney) for the treatment of chronic aplastic anemia (CAA). Methods The CAA patients were divided into the herbal group (60 cases) treated mainly by Bu shen Granule with syndrome differentiation and the Cyclosporin A group (16 cases ) tr eated mainly by Cyclosporin A for 6 months. The healthy control group consisting of 20 healthy subjects was set up. The expressions of CD3 +, CD3+CD28+, and CD3+CD95+ of the healthy control groups were compared with the herbal group and the Cyclosporin A group. Results The expressions of CD3 +, CD3+CD28+, and CD3+CD9 5+ of the CAA groups were higher than those of the healthy control group (P
