ABSTRACT

The concept of beauty and cosmetic is an ancient as mankind and civilization. The word‘COSMETIC’ was derived from the Greek word “KOSM TIKAS “meaning having the power, arrange, skillin decorating. In starting with 1990, some cosmetic manufacturer company claims that addition ofsome plant based active ingredient, therapeutically benefit to describe the OTC skin care products, suchas alpha – hydroxy acid, retinoic acid, ascorbic acid and coenzyme. The herbal cosmetic is thepreparations containing phytochemical from a botanical source, which influence the function of skinand provide nutrients necessary for the healthy skin and hair. The beauty of skin and hair depends uponsome facts such as – healthy habits, climatic conditions, routine job and maintenance. In front ofmirror, we don’t recognize ourselves, in compare to 10 years back. Dark circles under the eyes, pigmentation, wrinkles – all of these indicate our aging problems. There is some small basic step thatyou can follow everyday of your life – the ‘CTM’ process. This CTM process not only applicable for theone who has the aging problem, but also applicable for all the ages of public both man and woman. Likeany other branch of science and technology, present scenario of herbal medicines has its own limitationarising out of its own technical constituents. Coconut oil is good for especially dry skin. Some commontriggers for hair fall – genetic, hormonal, stress, medications, Immunity, Radiation, Tight Hairdos.Bhringraj; it promotes hair growth, prevents hair fall, treat damaged hair and strengthens hair follicles. An itchy scalp and flakiness are the hallmark signs of dandruff, but it may also cause other symptomslike greasy patches on the scalp and tingling skin. Neem; it stimulates hair growth, promotes scalphealthy and act as an anti-bacterial. Stop taking an herb if any side effect develops such as allergy, stomach upset, skin rash or headache.

ABSTRACT

The number of organ and tissue transplantation in humans and animals has grown significantly recently, especially after the advent of modern and safer techniques of immunosuppression. The objective of this study was to evaluate macro and microscopically partial urinary bladder fresh allograft in rabbits, using as immunomodulatory agent cyclosporine or allogenic adipose tissue derived mesenchymal stem cells (ADSCs). For this purpose, 25 rabbits were used. One male was the donor of ADSCs; 24 females received a partial urinary bladder allograft and were treated with cyclosporine (GCi) or mesenchymal stem cells (GCe). We conclude that the GCe group had better histological acceptance of the implant than GCi group at 30 days evaluation.(AU)

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Hepatitis B virus DNA quantification is essential for managing chronic hepatitis B (CHB). We compared the performance of artus HBV QS-RGQ (QIAGEN GmbH, Germany) and CAP/CTM v2.0 HBV assays (Roche Molecular Diagnostics, USA) in CHB patients. METHODS: A comparative evaluation between two assays was performed with 508 clinical serum samples. Precision, linearity, and the limit of detection (LOD) of QS-RGQ assay was evaluated by using the WHO standard 97/750 and clinical samples. RESULTS: Detection rates and viral loads as determined QS-RGQ assay were significantly lower than those from the CAP/CTM v2.0 assay (52.8% vs 60.6%; 3.55±1.77 IU/mL vs 4.18±1.89 IU/mL, P<0.0001). The kappa coefficient between qualitative results was 0.79 (95% confidence interval, 0.74 to 0.85). Bland-Altman plot found a mean difference of (QS-RGQ − CAP/CTM v2.0)=−0.63 log₁₀ IU/mL (95% limit of agreement, −1.48 to 0.22). Repeatability and total imprecision (% CV) of the QS-RGQ assay were 1.0% and 1.1% at 2,000 IU/mL, and 0.7% and 1.4% at 20,000 IU/mL, respectively. Linearity of this assay ranged from 31.6 to 1.0±10⁷ IU/mL, and the LOD was 2.95 IU/mL. CONCLUSIONS: The artus HBV QS-RGQ assay showed good performance but significantly decreased detection rate and viral load compared with CAP/CTM v2.0 assays. This assay recommends using plasma; however, we used stored serum because of the retrospective study design. Usually HBV DNA quantification is performed in plasma or serum, but sample type and clinical relevance of quantitative values should be considered when determining the clinical application of this reagent.

ABSTRACT

The standardization of techniques and tests of the association of Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) and Mononuclear Stem Cells (MSCs) in the consolidation of cortical bone defects by clinical, biomechanical, radiological, and histological analysis is evaluated in a pilot study. Six adult female dogs of mixed breed, weighing between 5 and 10kg, separated by random draw in six treatments were used. An elliptical failure of 1.0 x0.4cm was done in the medial diaphyseal cortical of the right tibia of each animal, that was filled according with the proposed treatment. In dog I, the failure was filled with saline (S), in dog II with PRP, in dog III with total mononuclear cell fraction (TMCF), in dog IV with stromal vascular fraction (SVF), in dog V with association of PRP and TMCF, and in dog VI with an association of PRP and SVF. Daily clinical evaluation, weekly degrees of lameness, radiological and girth before, immediate postoperative, 7, 14, 21 and 30 days, biomechanics before the procedure, at 10, 20 and 30 days, and biopsies at 15 and 30 days were performed. The TMCF got a count and viability of 2,0x108cells and 90% respectively, while for SVF it was 3x106cells and 50%, respectively. The PRP concentrated on average seven times the original number of platelets from whole blood, platelets from whole blood 250.000 μl-1 to 1.750.000 μl-1 platelets in PRP. This afforded adequate standardization of techniques, enabling the test of association between mononuclear stem cells (MSCs) and platelet-rich plasma(PRP), as well as their separate use to repair cortical bone defects, indicating the possibility of the association between FTCM and PRP to be the best treatment...

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: A comparison of MRI and computed tomography-myelography (CTM) for lumbar intracanalar dimensions. To compare the capability and reproducibility of MRI and CTM in measuring the cross-sectional morphology of intracanalar lesions of the lumbar spine. MATERIALS AND METHODS: MRI and CTM of lumbar disc levels from 61 subjects with various lumbar spinal diseases were studied. Dural area, dural anteroposterior (AP) diameter, dural right-left diameter, and thickness of the ligamentum flavum were measured by two orthopedic surgeons. Each section was graded by degree of stenosis. Absolute value and intra- and inter-observer correlation coefficients (ICC) of these measurements and the associations between MRI and CTM values were determined. RESULTS: Except for MRI determination of ligament flavum thickness, CTM and MRI and intra- and ICC suggested sufficient reproducibility. When measurements of dural area, dural AP diameter, and RL diameter were compared, values in CTM were significantly (p = 0.01-0.004) larger than those in MRI (CTM/MRI ratios, 119%, 111%, and 105%, respectively). As spinal stenosis became more severe, discrepancies between CTM and MRI in measurements of the dural sac became larger. CONCLUSION: Both CTM and MRI provided reproducible measurements of lumbar intracanalar dimensions. However, flavum thickness may be more accurately measured by CTM. Because the differences in the measurements between CTM and MRI are very slight and there is very little data to suggest that the precise degree of stenosis is related to symptoms or treatment outcome, the usefulness of the CTM over MRI needs to be confirmed in future studies.

ABSTRACT

Bone marrow (BM) is an important source for isolating mesenchymal stem cells (MSC) useful in immunomodulation and tissue regeneration therapies. Objective. To isolate and characterize mesenchymal stem cells obtained from BM meeting the requirements of the International Society for Cellular Therapy. Materials and methods. BM samples were collected from volunteer donors attending the Orthopedics Service of the San Ignacio University Hospital (Bogotá, Colombia). Morphological characteristics were evaluated by inverted microscopy and the immunophenotype was determined by flow cytometry. Protocols were developed for adipogenic, osteogenic and chondrogenic differentiation using the Oil Red O, alkaline phosphatase and safranin stains, respectively. Results. We collected 24 samples of BM from patients with total hip replacement (volume of BM sample: 5-45 ml). Cells with a fibroblastoid morphology were isolated from 21 BM samples (isolation efficiency: 87.5%). No statistical significant differences were found between the hematopoyetic antigens (CD34 and CD45, p>0.05) in the immunophenotypic evaluation (of MSC from BM); on the contrary, there were differences (p=0.006) between the hematopoyetic antigen CD45 and the mesenchymal antigens (CD13, CD44, CD73, CD90, CD105, HLA-I, and HLA-DR). Oil Red O stain revealed the presence of multilocular adipocytes, in the osteogenic induction we observed localized mineralization nodules, and chondrogenesis was positive as revealed by the safranin stain. Conclusion. MSC were satisfactorily isolated from BM and characterized according to the international standards.
