ABSTRACT

This study evaluated the effects of injectable trace minerals (ITM) on antioxidant and immune response, resistance to endoparasites, health and growth of newborn Boer kids. Forty-six Boer kids [24 males and 22 females; 3.94±1.03kg of body weight (BW); 6.2±2.4 d of age] were enrolled in the study. Kids were stratified by type of birth (twins or singlet), sex, and BW and assigned to 1 of 2 treatments: one subcutaneous injection (0.1mL/4.5kg of BW) of (1) saline solution or (2) ITM (60, 10, 5, and 15mg/mL of Zn, Mn, Se and Cu, respectively). Blood samples were collected on d 0, 7, 14, 28 and 56. Feces samples were collected on d 56 and BW on d 0, 28 and 56. Kids were checked daily for signs of diarrhea. ITM kids had greater (P<0.01) plasma concentration of superoxide dismutase and tended (P=0.06) to have greater plasma concentration of glutathione peroxidase. ITM kids had greater (P=0.05) concentration of eosinophils, but no differences (P≥0.11) were observed for other hemogram variables. The ITM application did not affect (P≥0.11) the EPG count. However, ITM kids had less (P=0.02) cumulative incidence of diarhea until d 42 (3.85 vs. 25.93±6.8% for ITM vs. Saline kids, respectively) but no differences (P>0.10) were observed after d 42. The ITM application did not affect (P≥0.40) the growth of kids (0.071 vs. 0.065±0.005kg/day for ITM vs. Saline kids, respectively). Thus, the ITM application, increased the plasma concentration of antioxidant enzymes and eosinophils, decreased the incidence of diarrhea only in the middle of the experiment, but did not affected the EPG count and growth of Boer kids.(AU)

ABSTRACT

This study evaluated the effect of detoxified castor meal on the reproductive performance, metabolic stress, milk production, and kid development in peripartum goats. The diet of the animals were with (DCM, n= 20) or without (WDCM, n= 21) detoxified castor meal during the entire gestation and until weaning, 60 days post-birth. No differences were observed in the gestation period, litter size, rate of multiple births, and mortality between the two groups. The postpartum plasma concentrations of progesterone remained below 1ng/mL in all animals, thus, confirming the absence of active corpora lutea. The thickness of sternum adipose tissue and loin area, levels of urea and cholesterol, milk production, and daily weight gain in the kids were low in the DCM group when compared to those in the WDCM group (P< 0.05). To conclude, the use of detoxified castor meal in peripartum goats resulted in lower level of performance in the kids because of reductions in the amount of milk received from their mothers during lactation. In addition, the diet containing detoxified castor meals was not efficient in recovering from the loss of stored body reserves able to initiate the recovery of the cyclic activity of the goats.(AU)

ABSTRACT

The aim of this work was to evaluate performance and ruminal development of dairy kids fed with different diets (alfalfa and / or grains: Alf, Alf + Gr, Gr) and slaughtered at different ages (50, 60 and 70 days of life). Parameters evaluated were: daily live weight gain (GDPV), slaughter weight (PF), hot carcass weight (PCC), slaughter yield (RF), stomach weight and ruminal papillae length (LP). Animals were assigned by random in the treatments: Alf 50 (n=3), Alf 60 (n=4), Alf 70 (n=3), Gr 50 (n=3), Gr 60 (n=4), Gr 70 (n=3), Alf+Gr 50 (n=3), Alf+Gr 60 (n=4), Alf+Gr 70 (n=3). Data were analyzed with linear mixed model according to a repeated measures design by ANOVA of Infostat 2018 program. Means multiple comparisons were evaluated by LSD-Fisher test (P = 0.05). No interaction was detected for diet and slaughter age. Regarding diet, animals that consumed Alf and Alf + Gr presented higher GDPV (p = 0.0022). FP and PCC were higher for Alf + Gr than for Gr group (p = 0.0352 and p = 0.0298). RF was higher for the Gr group than for the others (p <0.0001). Age at slaughter affected PF and PCC, animals with 70 days had the highest values (p= 0.0002 and p= 0,0008). 50 days old kids had the maximum RF (p=0.0413). Rumen weight was higher for group 70 compared with groups 60 and 50 (p=0.0410). LP was similar for all treatments. It is possible to conclude that diet and age affected the productive performance of animals.

ABSTRACT

Sudden deaths after colostrum ingestion in kids and lambs born to mothers grazing in areas with Amorimia septentrionalis have been reported in the Brazilian northeastern semi-arid region, in Paraíba state. This study aimed to determine whether the sodium monofluoracetate (MF) contained in A. septentrionalis is eliminated in milk, causing the death of kids. After confirming gestation on the 25th day after mating, 26 goats were randomly distributed into three groups. In Group 1, eight goats received fresh leaves of A. septentrionalis in daily doses of 1g/kg body weight, administered at three different periods during gestation: from days 91 to 100, 116 to 125, and from day 140 until delivery day. In Group 2, consisting of 10 females, eight goats received 1g/kg body weight of A. septentrionalis dried and milled leaves, fed daily from the 140th day of gestation until delivery. The other two goats of this group did not ingest the plant during gestation and after delivery the colostrum supplied to their kids was replaced by colostrum of goats from that same group that had ingested the plant. Eight goats from Group 3 (control) did not ingest A. septentrionalis. Seven goats from Group 1 showed signs of poisoning from 2nd to 8th days of plant administration, in all periods, and recovered within 7 to 12 days. Another goat presented severe clinical signs and was submitted to euthanasia in extremis. Two goats aborted. Four kids, from two goats, received colostrum and, after 15 minutes, presented depression, breathing wheezing, lateral recumbence, bleating, and death. Two goats gave birth at night; the two kids were found dead and, at necropsy, it was verified that they were born alive. The last goat in this group gave birth to two kids which showed no signs of poisoning after colostrum ingestion. In Group 2, the eight goats that ingested dry leaves of the plant presented tachycardia and engorgement of the jugular veins; six aborted, and the kids of the other two goats died immediately after delivery without ingesting colostrum. The three kids of the two goats that did not ingest the plant during gestation did not show signs of poisoning after ingesting colostrum from the goats that had ingested the plant. In Group 3, all females kidded normally and the kids showed no signs of poisoning. Ten leaf samples of A. septentrionalis contained 0.00074% ±0.00018 MF. These results demonstrate that the MF of A. septentrionalis is eliminated in colostrum and may cause the death of kids. As in previous reports, the plant also caused abortion.(AU)

ABSTRACT

The experiment was conducted on a commercial farm, under semiextensive system and located in the province of Seville, Spain. In order to evaluate the effect of the type of food (goat milk vs. substitute) and sex on the growth and carcass traits, sixty four twins kids of Florida goat breed born the same day were used. The animals remained with their mothers the first day of life. Afterwards, they were divided into two groups: LN (goat milk) and LA (milk replacer). The daily weight gain was higher in LN (203 g/d vs. 187 g/d) and significantly greater (P<0.05) in males (202 g/d vs. 184 g/d). Sex significantly influenced (P<0.05) most of the components of the “fifth quarter”, whereas the food type had an effect on the fat deposit. The carcass of the males were longer, deeper and more compact than those of the females (P<0.05), whereas the food type only had a significant effect (P<0.05) in the indices of compactness, L/G, G/F and Th/G. The carcass weighed between 7.2 and 8.2 kg, and the carcass yields were 52-56 percent, with significant differences (P<0.05) between genders and type of food. The quartering of the carcass offered values of the 32-33 percent for legs, 26-27 percent for ribs, 19-20 percent for the back, 12-13 percent for chest and 9-10 percent for the neck, without statistical difference (P>0.05) between type of food and sex. The carcass of the males displayed higher (P<0.05) percentage of muscle (58.4 vs. 57.1 percent), and of bone (22.7 vs. 21.8 percent) and lower percentage of fat (17.9 vs. 19.9 percent) as compared to females, whereas the food type only affected significantly the intermuscular fat content (12.2 percent LN vs. 11.1 percent LA).

ABSTRACT

Sixty eight kids (35 females and 33 males) were randomly assigned to the treatments: T1 : lactic protein + cow lard, T2 : 20.0% of concentrate of soy protein + cow lard, T3 : 40.0% of concentrate of soy protein + cow lard, T4 : lactic protein + pork lard, T5 : 20.0% concentrate of soy protein + pork lard and, T6 : 40.0% of concentrate of soy protein + pork lard. The concentrate of soy protein did not affect (P>0.05) neither the consumption of liquid diet nor average daily weight gain, but it affected (P<0.05) consumption of the starting concentrate (95; 95, and 97 g d-¹ animal-¹). The energy sources did not affect (P>0.05) neither consumption of the liquid diet nor average daily weight gain, but they affected (P<0.05) consumption of the starting concentrate (97 vs 95 g d-¹ animal-¹). Sex of kid did not affect (P>0.05) neither consumption of the milk substitute nor average daily weight gain, but it affected (P<0.05) consumption of the starting concentrate (100 vs 92 g d-¹ animal-¹ for males and females, respectively). The experimental period (weeks) affected (P<0.05) all variables. The levels of the concentrate of soy protein, energy sources, and sex of kids did not affect (P>0.05) feed conversion based on milk total solids. There were some significant interactions (P<0.05) on consumption of the milk substitute and starting concentrate. It is concluded that it is possible to raise kids with milk substitutes prepared with a concentrate of soy protein, cow and/or pork lard.
