ABSTRACT

Objective To isolate and identify the compounds in the essential oils from the leaves of Callistemon viminalis (D.R.) and Melaleuca leucadendron (Linn.) collected in Dakar, Senegal. Methods The essential oils from the leaves of these two myrtaceaes were extracted by steam distillation and analyzed by gas chromatograph and gas chromatography–mass spectrometer. Results A total of 34 constituents were identified in the oil of Callistemon viminalis and the major compounds were 1.8-cineole (58.12%), limonene (9.72%), α-terpineol (9.56%), geranial (6.02%), δ-elemene (3.53%), myrcene (2.96%) and α-pinene (2.49%). For the essential oil of Melaleuca leucadendron, 43 constituents were identified, and 1.8-cineole (28.87%), epiglobulol (23.06%), α-pinene (12.22%), limonene (11.65%) and α-terpineol (7.06%) were major compounds. Conclusions Considering properties of the identified major compounds, essential oils of both studied myrtaceae could be used in the medicine field including the food, pharmaceutical and cosmetic industry.

This review covers the potentials, applications and properties of different extracts from different parts (branches, flowers, fruits, bark, leaves) of C. viminalis. Furthermore, the chemical structures of the bioactive compounds were reported for biological activities. All the results supported the traditional uses of C. viminalis in folk medicine. In addition, some researches supported the use of C. viminalis extracts for the preparation of metal oxide nanoparticles.

ABSTRACT

O presente trabalho teve como objetivo determinar a composição química e avaliar a atividade antimicrobiana dos óleos essenciais obtidos das folhas (frescas e secas) e flores da Callistemon viminalis. Os óleos essenciais foram analisados por CG/EM. A concentração inibitória mínima (CIM) foi determinada utilizando o método de microdiluição em caldo frente a bactérias Gram-positivas e Gram-negativas. De um total de 96,72%, 98,70% dos compostos identificados nos óleos essenciais foram monoterpenos. O 1,8-cineol foi o componente majoritário no óleo essencial das folhas frescas (70,43%), folhas secas (71,71%) e flores (42,39%), seguido do tricicleno com 12,97% nas folhas frescas, 8,20% nas folhas secas e 28,08% nas flores. A CIM para todos os micro-organismos testados foi ≥ a 2.000 μg/mL. Esse estudo é o primeiro relato sobre a composição química e atividade antimicrobiana do óleo essencial das flores de C. viminalis.


The aim of this study was to determine the chemical composition and the antimicrobial activity of essential oils of Callistemon viminalis leaves (fresh and dried) and flowers. The essential oils were analyzed by GC/MS and the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria was determined by the broth microdilution method. Between 96.72% and 98.70% of the compounds identified in the essential oils were monoterpenes. 1,8-Cineole was the major component in the essential oils of fresh leaves (70.43%), dried leaves (71.71%) and flowers (42.39%), followed by tricyclene: 12.97% in the fresh leaves, 8.20% in the dried leaves and 28.08% in the flowers. The MIC for all microorganisms tested was ≥ 2,000 μg/mL, for all the essential oil samples. This study is the first report on the chemical composition and antimicrobial activity of essential oil from the flowers of C. viminalis.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE@#To investigate antioxidant and antibacterial activities of Callistemon viminalis (C. viminalis) leaves.@*METHODS@#The essential oil of C. viminalis leaves obtained by hydro-distillation was analyzed by GC/MS. Different extracts were tested for total phenolic and flavonoid contents and in vitro antioxidant (DPPH assay) and antibacterial (agar disc diffusion and 96-well micro-plates methods) actives.@*RESULTS@#Fourteen components were identified in the essential oil, representing 98.94% of the total oil. The major components were 1,8-cineole (64.53%) and α-pinene (9.69%). Leaf essential oil exhibited the highest antioxidant activity of (88.60±1.51)% comparable to gallic acid, a standard compound [(80.00±2.12)%]. Additionally, the biggest zone of inhibitions against the studied bacterial strains was observed by the essential oil when compared to the standard antibiotic (tetracycline). The crude methanol extract and ethyl acetate fraction had a significant antibacterial activity against the tested bacterial strains.@*CONCLUSIONS@#It can be suggested that C. viminalis is a great potential source of antibacterial and antioxidant compounds useful for new antimicrobial drugs from the natural basis. The present study revealed that the essential oil as well as the methanol extracts and ethyl acetate fraction of C. viminalis leaves exhibited highly significant antibacterial activity against the tested bacterial strains.

ABSTRACT

Objective: The large flowering plant genus Callistemon is belongs to family Myrtaceae and reported for its medical importance. Various parts of different species exhibit different medicinal importance and yet to be phytochemically investigated. In the different time various scientist have investigated the genus and reported the chemical constituents. A survey of literature on genus Callistemon reported the isolation of triterpenoids and steroids from leaves, seeds and stem bark of different species.
