ABSTRACT

The high rate of cervical cancer in Algeria and the absence of organized screening programs are well shown in this study, which aims to determine the prevalence of cervical cancer and describe the risk factors associated with this alarming prevalence. This retrospective study is based on data collected from medical records and A questionnaire was developed to assess the risk factors (such as: parity, age at first marriage, smoking, oral contraceptive, and Hormonal status) of cervical cancer among the participants. Face to Face interview were conducted with the participants. The result obtained from this study revealed that cervical cancer occupies the fourth place of cancer in the Wilaya of Ain Defla (4,71 %); the results confirm the effect of several risk factors such as early marriage age (below 20 years: 46.66 %), multiparity (53.33%), menopause (66.66 %); taking contraception (53.33%) and smoking in the development of this pathology. The adoption of an early and annual screening program in our region would be very important to us. In addition, the interest of annual screening is to raise women's awareness of this pathology, particularly in isolated regions. (

ABSTRACT

Obesity is a growing clinical condition around the world, considered a risk factor for numerous diseases such as hypertension, myocardial infarction, diabetes, and cancer. Among the neoplasms related to overweight, breast cancer stands out. Therefore, the objective of this review is to elucidate the impact of obesity on the most prevalent cancer among women, either as a direct risk factor for its onset or as a determinant of survival

ABSTRACT

Introduction: In Mexico, every two hours a woman dies of breast cancer (BrCa); thus Nursing should assume a principal roll in the promotion of women's health. Objective: explore the relationship between knowledge and behavior related to risk factors and BrCa early detection. Materials and methods: basic, descriptive, and observational study pilot, which included 52 women older than 25 working in an education institution. The variables were BrCa risk factors, personal background, protecting or risk conducts, knowledge and screening. Results: K Richardson was .73. Average age was 38 +- 8. Women between 47-57 reported a lower level of education (Z = -2.87, p = .004), and less knowledge (ANOVA p = .02). Women who did not report chronic illness data reported greater average number of risk conducts (3+-1) than those who did (2+-1, t = 2.944, gl = 50, p < .005). Discussion: our results are consistent with those of the literature: when knowledge is insufficient women do not behave healthy and do not perform early detection practices. Conclusion: it is necessary to implement strategies to enhance knowledge and frequency of BrCa early detection practices.

ABSTRACT

Background: The cervical intraepithelial neoplasm (CIN) constitutes pre-cancer lesions of uterine cervix, showing an increment of their rates of incidence in everybody. Cuba, in spite of having a screening program, it does more than 40 years have not been able to diminish the mortality for this cancer. Objective: A case control study during the period of 1999-2008 was made to determinate the risk' factors associated with the probability of having a CIN in patients of the University Policlinic "Doctor Juan Manuel Paez Inchausti" in the Island of the Youth (Cuba). Method: This study includes 632 patients, the half of them with this illness and the same number of healthy persons. The information about the patients was obtained by revision of his clinical history documents. Result: The age average was from 36.08 +/- 7.23 years. The more differentiates between both studies groups were between the patients of black skin. In the patients that began their sexual relationships before the 15 years the risk of suffering a CIN was 3.8 times, also tripling the risk in the multipary patient and in those that used oral contraceptive for more than 10 years. Conclusions: The risk factors of more relevance were the precocious beginning of the sexual relationships, the infections of sexual transmission and multiparity.

ABSTRACT

The purpose of this study was to identify how students majoring in nursing perceive cause of cancers and the effects of diet for preventing cancers. Data for the study were collected by 651 nursing students, who were registered in the second and third year in three technical colleges and third and fourth year in two universities. The research instruments included items on general characteristics of subjects, items about the degree of perception of the frequency of cancer onset and items on the perception of mortality, risk factors, preventive diets, knowledge, and high risk factor for cancer in specific body areas. The findings of this study are as follows : 1. Almost all subjects(92.8%) reported that the frequency of cancer onset increases and that it is 93.9% for people over 40. Degree of perception about cancer mortality was low at 33.0%. 2. As far as the perception of risk factors for cancer onset was concerned, smoking, stress, heredity, family history, and alcohol were rated high, over 80.0%. Risk factor in clouding, virus, hormones, pesticides were rated as low. 3. As to the perception of risk factor for body area as associated with diet salted and scorched food were rated at 44.5% for stomach cancer, alcohol, 50.4% for liver cancer, smoking, 72.8% for lung cancer, pregnancy times, 25.3%, and marriage age, 23.0% for uterine cancer, and no delivery experience, 40% for breast cancer. 4. The knowledge score for cancer was between 12 and 36, with a mean score of 26.75(SD=4.13). There was a statistically significant difference between experience in caring for cancer patients during clinical practice and knowledge score(t=3.09, p=.002).
