ABSTRACT

Anterior teeth are valuable for aesthetics, speech and mastication . Their absence, impaction and/or delayed eruption create significant distress often leading to early presentation to the dental office. This study presents an audit of the management of impacted anterior teeth that presented at a tertiary level dental clinic. The periodontal outcomes of the aligned teeth were also reported. Methods : This is an observational study spanning a nine-year period. Demographic data, clinical presentation as well as post alignment dental and periodontal status of the impacted teeth were assessed. Data was analysed using the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) version 26. Fisher's exact test and paired samples T-test were used for categorical and continuous variables respectively. Significance was set at P < 0.05. Results: Twenty-eight (1.76%) cases presenting with failed eruption of thirty-two anterior teeth were found during the period under review. Eight patients were treated by extraction, orthodontic treatment and space closure or prosthetic replacement with a mean treatment time of 2.83 ± 2.66 years. Thirteen patients completed treatment by orthodontic alignment with mean alignment time of 1.4 ± 1.5 years and treatment time of 3.6 ± 2.5 years. There was significant difference in the post-operative root length of aligned teeth compared to their normal antimeres (p < 0.005). Conclusion: Patients with impacted anterior teeth presented later than was beneficial for spontaneous alignment of their teeth. The average 1.5mm loss of root length observed was not detrimental to the anatomical retention or function of the aligned teeth. There is need for more enlightenment with regards to early presentation for dental problems to avoid expensive and time-consuming treatments.

ABSTRACT

Abstract A new device was developed to enable the visualization and measurement of canine angulation while at the same time visualizing and measuring the force transmitted to adjacent teeth. This study aimed to evaluate the mesiodistal tilt angle of the upper canine brackets, the wire deflection, and its effects on adjacent teeth with five different slot designs of upper canines. Wires (0.020" and 0.019" x 0.025") were tested on different five bracket types at five different distal angles. The force applied to adjacent teeth was measured as the angle was increased, and its consequences were observed in the posterior and anterior regions as well. The force tension (gf) was measured in a universal testing machine. Data were submitted to a 3-way ANOVA and Tukey's test (α=0.05). For both arches, regardless of the type of tooth and bracket type, the highest means tension mean values were shown by the 20° angle, followed by the 15°,10°, and 5° angles, which differed statistically among themselves. Overall, for 5°, 10°, and 15° angles, conventional and versatile brackets showed significantly higher force values in all teeth, tip-edge and control brackets showed the lowest. The highest force values were observed in central and lateral incisors with conventional and versatile brackets and on first and second premolar teeth with self-ligating passive and control brackets. Conventional brackets presented the highest forces, tip-edge and control brackets showed the lowest. The teeth that suffered the greatest forces were lateral incisors, and those that suffered the least were second premolars.

ABSTRACT

Abstract Background: The results from automated equipment and peripheral blood smears allow correlating clinical data with cellular blood counts (CBC), generating information on pathologies of hematological and non-hematological origin in dogs. Objective: To describe qualitative and quantitative magnitudes of CBC in healthy donor dogs of a blood- bank in Medellín (Colombia). Methods: A descriptive-prospective study was carried out from 146 records of CBC results from a blood-bank. The samples were processed by automated equipment, and trained personnel performed the observation of peripheral blood smears to collect qualitative information. Variables such as age, sex, breed, quantitative results, and observations of the peripheral blood smears were considered. For the definition of biological intervals (BIs), the mean and two standard deviations were used for the data with a normal distribution. Otherwise, the 2.5th and 97.5th percentiles were used. Results: The size, granularity, and cytoplasmic vacuoles in monocytes and polymorphonuclear eosinophils, as well as the presence of Barr chromatin and occasional circulating erythroblasts, were remarkable findings to the peripheral blood smear. With the standardization of data obtained from dogs of large and giant breeds, the present work provides BIs for some of the CBC data in the studied population. Conclusion: The findings of the present study allow approximations to the definition of alterations in blood cells and their counts, which can guide the veterinarian towards an early diagnosis in dogs.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT Introduction: Teeth frequently fail to erupt and situations arise that prevent the canines from reaching the occlusal plane. Objective: Discourse about the three situations in which the canine does not reach the occlusal plane, and remains unerupted; and at the same time, point how to make a safe diagnosis of alveolodental ankylosis - one of the three causes -, based on tomography. Conclusions: Ankylosis occurs in impacted teeth by atrophy of the periodontal ligament, including the epithelial rests of Malassez. The tomographic signs of alveolodental ankylosis in unerupted canines are the interruption of hypodense periodontal space, discontinuity of the lamina dura and its continuity with the root surface, which gradually loses its regular shape.

ABSTRACT

Abstract This prospective study aimed to assess the positional features of palatally displaced maxillary canines (PDCs), their relationship with both cephalometric and dental cast measurements and treatment duration. Pretreatment panoramic and lateral cephalometric radiographs and dental casts of 46 patients (23 patients with uni/bilateral PDC and 23 patients with Class I malocclusion) were collected. The mesial inclination of the permanent canine to the midline (α angle), the distance from the cusp tip of the permanent canine to the occlusal line (d distance), and the mesial position of the crown of the displaced canine (sector) were measured on the panoramic radiographs. SNA°, SNB°, ANB°, SN-GoGn°, SN-PP°, and PP-MP° angles and sagittal inclinations of the PDCs' (C-PP°) were measured on cephalometric radiographs. Arch length discrepancies and transversal arch measurements were also performed. The Student's t-test, Mann-Whitney U test and Kruskal-Wallis test were used to compare variables that were not normally distributed while ANOVA was used for the normally distributed data. The arch widths were similar between the groups while crowding was significantly greater in the PDC group. A negative correlation was found between the α angle and vertical plane angle (SN-GoGn°). Treatment duration was positively correlated with α angle and d distance but there was no relationship with the sagittal angulation of the PDC to the palatal plane (C-PP°) and the treatment duration. Treatment duration can be expected to be longer with every increase in the angle of the PDC to the midline and distance from the occlusal plane.

ABSTRACT

Objective@#To investigate changes in the three⁃dimensional position of the maxillary canine during the distal movement of the maxillary first molar by a mini⁃implant combined with a CD appliance.@*Methods@#Ten typodont models of class II malocclusion were selected, and one side was randomly chosen as the experimental group. The CD ap⁃ pliance was bonded to the maxillary canine and first molar of the experimental group, and 1.2 mm stainless steel wire was bent as the anchorage, which was fixed on the model to simulate mini⁃implants implanted in the zygomatic alveolar ridge. Then, 180 g orthodontic force was applied to the canine of the experimental group; the other side was recognized as the control group and was not used for strengthening. Six mini⁃implants were implanted in different parts of the mod⁃ el and used as a reference before and after the experiment. The models were placed in an incubator and heated at 56 ℃ in a water bath for 2 min. The models were scanned before and after thermostatic water bath treatment with a 3⁃shape scanner. Then, the digital models were overlapped through the reference points, and the positions of the canines and first molars were measured before and after the experiment.@*Results@#The sagittal movement distance of the first molar in the experimental group was ( 0.25 ± 0.33) mm, and the vertical movement distance was (0.25 ± 0.28 )mm, which was significantly different from the control group (P < 0.05), while the transverse change was not significantly different (P > 0.05). There was no significant difference in the root position of the first molar in the experimental group (P > 0.05). The lateral and vertical displacement distances of the maxillary canine crown in the experimental group were (4.03 ± 2.11) mm and (1.86 ± 1.01) mm, respectively, which were significantly different from those in the control group (P < 0.001), while the sagittal changes showed no significant differences (P > 0.05). In the experimental group, there was no significant difference in the position of the apex of the maxillary cusp (P > 0.05).@*Conclusion@#Our in vitro study showed that the maxillary canines inclined buccally accompanied by a small amount of intrusion during molar distaliza⁃ tion by a mini⁃implant combined with a CD appliance.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT: This study aimed to evaluate two protocols (PA and PB) that are used to obtain canine platelet-rich plasma (PRP) for cellularity. Twenty healthy dogs were used. Blood samples were collected and placed in two tubes of 3.2% sodium citrate. PA used double centrifugation at 210 x g, and 370 x g and PB used double centrifugation with 140 x g and 330 x g. The PRP samples from the protocols were examined in terms of their platelet, erythrocyte, and leukocyte count in the Neubauer chamber, differential leukocyte count and platelet morphological observation in blood smears. Data (mean and standard deviation) were analyzed with the 95% probability t-test (P <0.05) using Pearson's correlation to test the relationship between platelets and erythrocytes, platelets, and leukocytes, and the leukocyte count versus the erythrocytes. Very weak negative correlation between platelets and leukocytes (p= -0.03), weak negative correlation between platelets and erythrocytes (p= -0.3) and a strong positive correlation between leukocytes and erythrocytes (ρ = 0.75) were noted. Although, BP did not reach the desired mean of one million platelets (979300 ± 79631 cells / μL), both protocols, A and B (4.42 ± 1.61 and 3.85 ± 1.55 times more platelets than total blood, respectively) (p <0.05) were efficient in concentrating platelets. Platelet activation was present in 26.55 ± 6.72% of the PA platelets and 26.25 ± 7.03% in PB (p> 0.05). PA and PB presented low erythrocyte concentration (p> 0.05), and PA had more leukocytes (p <0.05) than PB, with higher concentrations of basophils that were segmented, and lymphocytes.

ABSTRACT

Haemorrhagic gastroenteritis in canine is caused by different etiological agents like canine parvovirus, E.coli, Salmonella, Campylobacter, Coccidia and Giardia, among these agents canine parvovirus is the most important. Canine parvovirus binds to the sialic acid receptors which are present on the RBC’s, so haemagglutination test is used to detect canine parvovirus. In this study a total (n=102) of faecal samples from canines having haemorrhagic gastroenteritis were taken. All the 102 samples were subjected to haemagglutination assay and the prevalence of CPV was studied. Host associated risk factors like age, sex, breed, vaccination and seasons responsible for occurrence of canine parvovirus infection are recorded. Out of the 102 samples haemagglutination assay detected 41 samples as positive and a percent positivity of (40.19%) was recorded by this diagnostic test. Age wise prevalence was (69.23%) in (0-6 month) age group which is more than (7-12 month) (13.33%) and more than a year group (5%). Sex wise prevalence was more in males (47.94%) than in females (20.78%). Breed wise prevalence was more in Labrador (78.57%) followed by Doberman Pinscher (62.50%) lower prevalence was reported in Pomerarian and German shephered breeds. Non vaccinated canines showed a high prevalence of (42.70%) and in vaccinated canines no disease prevalence was detected. In the season wise prevalence, spring season showed more prevalence (54.76%) followed by summer season which showed (37.5%) prevalence and the least prevalence of (11.11%) was recorded in the winter season. Study showed that Haemagglutination assay is a good diagnostic test for the study of canine parvovirus where modern facilities of molecular diagnosis and the costly faecal ELISA test kits are not available.

ABSTRACT Objective. To estimate the general prevalence of Anaplasma spp. and the specific prevalence of A. platys and A. phagocytophilum in canines through studies published between 2000 and 2018. Materials and methods. Systematic review with 14 search strategies to ensure exhaustivity and reproducibility in the stages specified in the PRISMA guide. Quality was evaluated with STROBE. Frequencies were calculated and global and specific prevalences were estimated by country, period of study and diagnostic test employed, with 95% confidence intervals. A forest plot was made showing the individual and global prevalences A. platys and A. phagocytophilum by PCR, ELISA, and IFI, compared using a Z-Test. Results. Thirty studies with 18.472 canines were included, mostly from Brazil, the United States, and Germany. In the studies with IFI, the prevalence was 39.0% (95% CI= 37.0-41.0); with ELISA 9.3% (95% CI=8.8-9.8); and with PCR, 7.1% (95% CI= 6.4-7.8). The prevalence with PCR was statistically higher in America at an 11.9% (95% CI= 10.5-13.3) compared to Africa, at an 5.5% (95% CI= 1.2-9.7), Asia, 4.1% (95% CI= 3.1-5.1), and Europe, 3.5% (95% CI = 2.5-4.5). The prevalence of A. platys with PCR was 16.1% (95% CI= 14.2-17.9), and of A. phagocytophilum, 3.7% (95% CI= 2.8-4.6). Conclusions. The study showed a high prevalence of the infection, with a greater presence of A. platys, in a low number of publications worldwide, with highly heterogeneous results when considering countries, diagnostic techniques, and species involved.

ABSTRACT

In highly decomposed and mutilated dead body remains dentures are frequently sent for the medicolegal examination by the forensic experts for identification. Dental tissues like bones resist putrefaction for much more longer period and these are in many cases available for examination due to its tough texture and ability to escape destruction. Methods: The present prospective study was done on 450 subjects (225 males and 225 females) of known age and sex, from different socio-economic strata and religion belonging to north region of Bihar state. Their age ranges vary from 14-73 years. The mandibular and maxillary canines of both sides were measured in both sexes. Various dimensions namely, mandibular and maxillary canine crown width, crown length and canine separation width were taken in each case with the help of dividers and vernier calipers with a resolution of 0.1mm. Results: In the present study, regarding mandibular canines in males, crown length showed the maximum accuracy (92.0%) of sex identity in the age group (E) 54-63 years and canine separation width showed the minimum accuracy of 40% in the age group (D) 44-53 years. In females, crown width showed the maximum accuracy of 83.33% in the age group (D) 44-53 years and minimum accuracy of 30% by crown length in the age group (F) 64-73 years. Regarding the maxillary canines, in males, the crown length showed the maximum accuracy (90%) of sex identity in the age group (D) 44-53 years and the minimum accuracy of 44% in the age group (A) 14-23 years. In females, both crown width and crown length showed the maximum accuracy of 96.66% in the age group (D) 44-53 years and minimum accuracy of 22% by crown width in the age group (B) 24-33 years. Conclusion: The present study revealed this method could be useful as a reliable tool for sex identity when use of other methods are not possible or there is no definite features indicating the sex as in cases when parts of decomposed and skeletonised dead bodies are recovered after a mass disaster or exhumation and also in cases when smaller fragmented part of the body is only available for examination.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT Despite the explanations about the mechanisms and reasons why dental follicles of unerupted maxillary canines do not cause root resorption in neighboring teeth, questions remain about the time expected for this event and the lack of protocols for preventive clinical management, which may serve as insights for further studies. Here, these mechanisms are correlated with imaging findings of CT scans and 3D reconstructions of a typical clinical case.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT Orthodontic traction of impacted canines stands as a major challenge for Orthodontics. It is a relatively frequent clinical complaint which management, more often than not, requires a multidisciplinary approach. Surgical exposure of the impacted canine, and the complex orthodontic mechanics applied to align the tooth back into the arch, may frequently lead to complications involving supporting tissues, not to mention the long treatment time and high costs imposed to patients. In face of that, it is worth highlighting the relevance of early diagnosis as to intervene efficiently and as soon as possible. This paper presents a review of the main concepts involving prevalence, etiology and classification of impacted canines, and describes the different clinical management options that would help solve the problem. It illustrates the topic by presenting a treatment delivered to a 13 year 7 months old male patient, suffering from a Class II, division 2, left subdivision, malocclusion, associated to a deep bite and a prolonged retention of a primary upper canine caused by the impaction of the permanent tooth. Corrective orthodontic therapy was associated to a rapid maxillary expansion and to the use of a high pull headgear. Impacted canine was submitted to orthodontic traction and correctly positioned back into the arch. This approach proved to be efficient in meeting both functional and aesthetic goals.

ABSTRACT

Abstract Metadoxine is a drug with a potential antioxidant and antifibrotic effect that is essentially used in human medicine in the treatment of acute or chronic alcoholic steatohepatitis. Numerous clinical trials and experimental investigations support its use; however, in veterinary medicine there are no field studies on this topic, although there exist isolated reports of its indication in secondary liver diseases in Latin American databases. The present study aimed to report on the prescription of metadoxine in canine and feline hepatopathies in routine practice in Colombia. Applying online web tools, a survey was conducted to establish some treatment guidelines for the use of metadoxine in the said field. Results showed that 55% of participating veterinarians prescribed metadoxine at least once in canines and felines. 74.6% of them reported a favorable evolution. As a joint therapy, dietary modifications, silymarin, and ursodeoxycholic acid were also prescribed in 80, 45.5, and 38.2% of the cases, respectively. A wide variation was detected regarding the dose, application route, frequency, and the duration of the therapeutic protocol. Regarding oral prescription, the dose was 17.3 ± 11.4 mg/dl every 12 hours. The results confirm the use of metadoxine as a treatment for hepatopathies in dogs and cats in Colombia. This highlights the need to carry out clinical trials that test the effect of metadoxine on the clinical and paraclinical evolution and prognosis of certain hepatopathies in dogs and cats.
