ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVES: The increasing demand for medical specialties with flexible working hours has been associated with the important role of quality of life as a determining factor when choosing a career in medicine, which might change the motivations for pursuing a career in ophthalmology. We aim to identify the main determinants of ophthalmology as a career choice as well as the reasons that motivated previous generations to follow this path. METHODS: Responses to self-administered online questionnaires were analyzed. RESULTS: A total of 225 responses were analyzed, including those of baby boomers (21), generation X (48), generation Y (131) and generation Z (25). Although the main reasons for choosing ophthalmology as a career are the same for all the generations in this study (flexible working hours, self-satisfaction from helping people improve their vision and the possibility of performing surgical procedures), some reasons for this career choice are more important to the younger generations (short-term results and short procedures), and some are more important to the older generations (the influence of an ophthalmologist in the family). CONCLUSION: The main reasons for choosing ophthalmology as a career are essentially the same over time. The differences in secondary motivations could be explained by generational differences.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE:To investigate the situation and influential factors of hospital pharmacist career planning and career satisfaction and their relationship. METHODS:The questionnaire modified according to"general career planning and career satisfaction scale"was adopted for questionnaire survey among pharmacists in 5 third grade class A hospitals by simple random sampling. The factor analysis was used to test the reliability and validity of the questionnaire. The influential factors of career planning and satisfaction degree, the relationship of career planning with satisfaction degree were analyzed by multiple regression analysis and Spearman correlation coefficient. RESULTS:Totally 210 questionnaires were sent out and 198 were effectively received, with effective recovery of 94.28%. Cronbach'α value of reliability and validity test was 0.939(>0.6),and KMO value was 0.905(close to 1). Results of survey showed that there was statistical significance in the effects of gender, age, marital status, work experience, professional title and position on career planning(P<0.05). There was statistical significance in the effects of age and professional title on satisfaction degree(P<0.05). Different dimensions of career planning(self-assessment,career awareness and action, position questions)were positively correlated with career satisfaction degree(total correlation coefficients were 0.649,0.633,0.694). CONCLUSIONS:Career planning is mainly influenced by gender, age, marital status, work experience, professional title and position. Career satisfaction degree is greatly influenced by age and position. The better the career planning is,the higher the satisfaction is. It is suggested to conduct professional training of hospital pharmacists by referring to the theory and experience of management, help pharmacists to fully understand the job responsibilities and do a good job in the position of professional roles. The establishment of scientific and effective career planning management system improves self-management ability of hospital pharmacists and career satisfaction degree, and promotes the development of discipline.

ABSTRACT

Surgery is a demanding and stressful field in Korea. Occupational stress can adversely affect the quality of care, decrease job satisfaction, and potentially increase medical errors. The aim of this study was to investigate the occupational stress and career satisfaction of Korean surgeons. We have conducted an electronic survey of 621 Korean surgeons for the occupational stress. Sixty-five questions were used to assess practical and personal characteristics and occupational stress using the Korean occupational stress scale (KOSS). The mean KOSS score was 49.31, which was higher than the average of Korean occupational stress (45.86) or that of other specialized professions (46.03). Young age, female gender, long working hours, and frequent night duties were significantly related to the higher KOSS score. Having spouse, having hobby and regular exercise decreased the KOSS score. Multiple linear regression analysis showed that long working hours and regular exercise were the independent factors associated with the KOSS score. Less than 50% of surgeons answered that they would become a surgeon again. Most surgeons (82.5%) did not want to recommend their child follow their career. Korean Surgeons have high occupational stress and low level of career satisfaction.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship nursing personal and workplace system factors (work disability) and work ability index scores in Ontario, Canada. METHODS: A total of 111 registered nurses were randomly selected from the total number of registered nurses on staff in the labor, delivery, recovery, and postpartum areas of four northeastern Ontario hospitals. Using a stratified random design approach, 51 participants were randomly selected in four northeastern Ontario cities. RESULTS: A total of 51 (45.9% response rate) online questionnaires were returned and another 60 (54.1% response rate) were completed using the paper format. The obstetric workforce in northeastern Ontario was predominately female (94.6%) with a mean age of 41.9 (standard deviation = 10.2). In the personal systems model, three variables: marital status (p = 0.025), respondent ethnicity (p = 0.026), and mean number of patients per shift (p = 0.049) were significantly contributed to the variance in work ability scores. In the workplace system model, job and career satisfaction (p = 0.026) had a positive influence on work ability scores, while work absenteeism (p = 0.023) demonstrated an inverse relationship with work ability scores. In the combined model, all the predictors were significantly related to work ability scores. CONCLUSION: Work ability is closely related to job and career satisfaction, and perceived control at work among obstetric nursing. In order to improve work ability, nurses need to work in environments that support them and allow them to be engaged in the decision-making processes.

ABSTRACT

Introduction: In Japan, the number of female physicians is increasing rapidly. Therefore, surveying female physicians about their current working status, especially about their continuing to work, is important.
Methods: In September 2009, we sent a questionnaire regarding working status to 1403 female physicians who had graduated from Okayama University Medical School or who were working at university-affiliated hospitals or facilities at the time of investigation.
Results: Of the 420 female physicians who responded (response rate, 29.9%), 46.6% (n=191) had left their jobs at some time, and 92.4% (n=171) of them had done so within 10 years after medical school graduation. The most common reason for leaving their jobs was childbirth/childcare, and the second most common was their husband’s job transfer. Of those who had ever left their job, 82% (n=151) wished to return to work at the time of their leaving. Only 27.2% (n=74) took childcare leave.
Discussion: Female physicians have trouble continuing their clinical work and developing their careers while caring for children. A system should be developed to support physicians who wish to continue their clinical work during life events, such as childcare. In particular, career support during the first 10 years after graduation from medical school is extremely important.

ABSTRACT

The number of female physicians is increasing. In Japan, marriage and child–bearing have been considered barriers preventing female physicians from working continuously. This study investigated the effects of marriage and child–bearing on career satisfaction among female physicians.
1)We surveyed the alumni of two private medical schools (University A: n=646; University B: n=316). The response rate was 38% for University A and 71% for University B.
2)When the subjects were asked if they were satisfied that they had chosen a career as a physician, 85%(n=400) answered that they were satisfied.
3)In total, 348 female physicians (74%) were married, and of them, 280 (80%) had experienced childbirth, and 259 (77%) were married to physicians.
4)Factors that significantly and positively affected career satisfaction were marriage for all female physicians and child–bearing for married female physicians.
5)The results of this study suggest that marriage and child–bearing, rather than being obstacles to career development, have positive effects on the career satisfaction of female physicians.
