ABSTRACT

Seven compounds were isolated from fermentation extract of cave-derived Metarhizium anisopliae NHC-M3-2 by silica gel, semi-preparative HPLC and other chromatographic methods. Their structures were elucidated by UV, IR, MS and NMR methods as 2,3-dehydroindigotide G (1), (-)-regiolone (2), naphtho-γ-pyrone (3), indigotide G (4), indigotide B (5) destruxin A (6) and destruxin B (7). Compound 1 is a new glycoside naphthopyranone compound. The anti-hepatitis B virus (HBV) activity of these compounds was evaluated. The EC50 and CC50 of compound 3 against HBV were 4.5 μmol·L-1 and 92.3 μmol·L-1, respectively. This is the first report of the antiviral activity of compound 3.

ABSTRACT

Abstract The present work describes 11 new species of the genus Trichorhina from Brazilian caves in the states of Bahia, Mato Grosso do Sul, Minas Gerais, Pará, and São Paulo. Moreover, the distribution of T. tomentosa has been expanded to include the states of Mato Grosso and Minas Gerais. Additionally, a distribution map and a key for all Brazilian species of Trichorhina, including epigean ones, are provided.


Resumo O presente trabalho descreve 11 novas espécies do gênero Trichorhina de cavernas brasileiras nos estados da Bahia, Mato Grosso do Sul, Minas Gerais, Pará e São Paulo. Além disso, a distribuição de T. tomentosa foi ampliada para incluir os estados de Mato Grosso e Minas Gerais. Adicionalmente, são fornecidos um mapa de distribuição e uma chave para todas as espécies brasileiras de Trichorhina, incluindo as epígeas.

Introduction: Group or colony size is an important variable that is related to biological, ecological, and conservation aspects of bats. However, estimating the size of each colony or group in roosts used by more than one species is particularly difficult, especially when recapture rates are very low (< 10 %). Objective: Estimate the colony size of 14 species of bats: one emballonurid, one natalid, four mormoopids, seven phyllostomids, and one vespertilionid, which roosted throughout one year (July 2016 to June 2017) in a mine and two caves -Cerro Huatulco and El Apanguito- in the Sierra Sur and Costa of the state of Oaxaca. Methods: We constructed capture-recapture histories per species and roost, and for species for which we obtained recaptures that represented at least 10 % of the captures, we used the probabilistic Cormack-Jolly-Seber model. In the case of species with no recaptures or with a recapture proportion lower than 10 %, we estimated the number of individuals per roost by applying the same proportion between the number of captured specimens and the estimated number for species with recaptures greater than 10 % and that they belonged to the same family or trophic guild. Results: The total estimated number of bats in the three studied roosts was 20 105. The highest colony size estimates were for the mormoopids Pteronotus fulvus and P. mesoamericanus from El Apanguito and P. fulvus from Cerro Huatulco, with 6 609, 4 092 and 2 212 individuals, respectively. Conclusions: The methodology used in this study allowed estimating the colony size for all registered species, even though only for 21.42 % the recapture rates were greater than 10 %. Therefore, we consider that this methodology represents a viable alternative to estimate colony size in other roosts. This information, together with the high species richness and importance for reproductive processes, allow us to propose these sites as Bat Protection and Conservation Areas in Mexico.


Introducción: El tamaño del grupo o colonia es una variable importante que está relacionada con los aspectos biológicos, ecológicos y de conservación de los murciélagos. Sin embargo, estimar el tamaño de cada colonia o grupo en refugios utilizados por más de una especie es particularmente difícil, especialmente cuando las tasas de recaptura son muy bajas (< 10 %). Objetivo: Estimar el tamaño de la colonia de 14 especies de murciélagos: un emballonúrido, un natálido, cuatro mormópidos, siete filostómidos y un vespertiliónido, que se refugiaron durante un año (Julio 2016 a Junio 2017) en una mina y dos cuevas -Cerro Huatulco y El Apanguito- en la Sierra Sur y Costa del estado de Oaxaca. Métodos: Construimos historias de captura-recaptura por especie y refugio, y para las especies que se obtuvieron recapturas que representaban al menos el 10 % de las capturas, utilizamos un modelo probabilístico de Cormack-Jolly-Seber para estimar el tamaño de sus colonias. En el caso de especies sin recapturas o con una proporción de recaptura inferior al 10 %, estimamos el número de individuos por refugio aplicando la misma proporción entre el número de individuos capturados y el número total estimado para las especies con recapturas mayores del 10 % y que pertenecieran a la misma familia o gremio trófico registradas con la mayor similitud ecológica y con suficientes recapturas para aplicar el modelo Cormack-Jolly-Seber. Resultados: El número total estimado de murciélagos en los tres refugios de estudio fue de 20 105. Las estimaciones de tamaño de colonia más altos fueron para los mormópidos Pteronotus fulvus y P. mesoamericanus de El Apanguito y P. fulvus en Cerro Huatulco, con 6 609, 4 092 and 2 212 individuos, respectivamente. Conclusiones: La metodología utilizada en este estudio permitió estimar el tamaño de la colonia para todas las especies registradas, a pesar de que solo para el 21.42 % las tasas de recaptura fueron superiores al 10 %. Por lo tanto, consideramos que esta metodología representa una alternativa viable para estimar el tamaño de colonia en otros refugios. Esta información, junto con los procesos de alta riqueza de especies y reproducción que tienen lugar en esta área, permiten proponer estos sitios como áreas de protección y conservación de murciélagos en México.

ABSTRACT

Introducción: Introducción: La compresión percutánea con balón (CPB) es una de las técnicas estándar para el tratamiento de la neuralgia del trigémino. El objetivo de este estudio es evaluar la eficacia de la compresión percutánea con balón (CPB) del ganglio de Gasser y raíz trigeminal en el tratamiento de la neuralgia del trigémino (TN). Métodos: Se usó un estudio observacional analítico de cohorte prospectivo. Un total de 293 pacientes con neuralgia del trigémino fueron tratados con la CPB entre octubre de 2008 y octubre de 2019 en Lima, Perú. Los datos fueron obtenidos de los registros hospitalarios y entrevistas. La CPB se realizó bajo sedación con propofol y remifentanilo. Se administróoxígeno a través de cánula nasal y se monitorizó la frecuencia cardíaca y la presión arterial durante todo el procedimiento. Elprocedimiento se realizó usando fluoroscopia con arco en C para facilitar la introducción de la aguja 14 G hasta que se ingresaal agujero oval y la visualización del catéter Fogarty 4F inflado en el cavum de Meckel. En la posición correcta, generalmenteaparece claramente definido una forma de pera o de reloj de arena después de la inyección de 0.5-1 ml de material decontraste. Resultados: La edad media fue de 64.2 años (rango 27-90). Treinta y seis pacientes (12%) tuvieron otros procedimientosquirúrgicos previos. Doscientos sesenta y dos pacientes (89.4%) experimentaron un alivio inmediato de la neuralgia despuésdel procedimiento. Se obtuvo un balón con forma de pera en 162 casos (55.3%), reloj de arena 73 (24.9%) y oval 58 (19.8%). En 245 pacientes (83.6%) el balón se mantuvo inflado durante 60 - 90 segundos. Es crucial obtener una forma de pera o de reloj de arena porque este es probablemente el factor más importante para obtener un buen alivio del dolor y duradero. Todo el procedimiento dura unos 15 minutos. La hipoestesia hemifacial después del procedimiento fue moderada o severa en el 76.5% de los pacientes. A los tres meses, la mayoría de los pacientes tienen una recuperación significativa en la sensibilidad facial, que continúa recuperándose con el tiempo. Todos los pacientes tuvieron alguna dificultad transitoria para masticar en el lado afectado. Se observó recurrencia en 26 pacientes (9.2%) en un tiempo de seguimiento de 6 meses a 11 años (5.75 años). La forma más común de balón asociada con recurrencia fue la oval (65.4%).Conclusiones: La CPB es técnicamente simple, bien tolerada por los pacientes. La tasa de éxito de la operación es alta. Los pacientes con balón en forma de pera o de reloj de arena obtuvieron los mejores resultados.


Introduction: Percutaneous balloon compression (PBC) is one of the standards techniques for the treatment of trigeminal neuralgia.The objective of this study is to evaluate the efficacy of PBC of the Gasserian ganglion and trigeminal rootlets as treatment for trigeminal neuralgia (TN). Methods: A prospective cohort analytical observational study was used. A total of 293 patients with trigeminal neuralgia were treated with PBC between october 2008 and October 2019 in Lima, Perú. The data were obtained from hospital records and interviews. PBC was performed under sedation with propofol and remifentanil. Oxygen was administered through nasal cannula and the heart rate and blood pressure were monitored throughout the procedure. The procedure is carried out with C-arm fluoroscopy to facilitate the introduction of the 14 G needle until the foramen oval is entered and the visualization of the inflated catheter Fogarty 4F in the Meckel ́s cave. Once in the right position, a clearly defined pear shape or hourglass is seen after injection of 0.5 ­ 1 mL of contrast material. Results: The mean age was 64.2 years (range, 27-90). Thirty-six patients (12%) had other previous surgical procedures. Two hundred sixty-two patients (89.4%) experienced immediate relief from neuralgia following the procedure. A pear-shaped balloon was obtained in 162 cases (55.3%), hourglass 73 (24.9%) and oval 58 (19.8%). In 245 patients (83.6%) the balloon is kept inflated for 60­90 seconds. It is crucial to obtain a pear shape or hourglass because this probably is the most significant factor for obtaining good, long-lasting pain relief. The whole procedure takes 15 minutes. Following the procedure, hemifacial hypoesthesia was moderate or severe in 76.5% of patients. Most patients have a significant recovery in facial sensitivity at three months post-procedure and continue to improve over time. All patients faced some transient difficulty chewing in the affected side. Recurrence was observed in 26 patients (9.2%) during a follow-up time of 6 months to 11 years (5.75 years). The most common form of balloon associated with recurrence was oval (65.4%).Conclusions: PBC is a technically simple, well tolerated by patients. The operation success rate is high. Patients with pear or hourglass shape balloon obtained the best results.

ABSTRACT

Arachnoid cysts are benign intracranial lesions. They are usually located in the middle fossa, but can be found in other locations. We present a case of symptomatic Meckel cave (MC) arachnoid cyst - a very rare location - and a treatment strategy not elsewhere described before for this condition. A 54-year-old female with trigeminal neuralgia with previous history of radiofrequency rhizotomy treatment 6 years before admission had been experiencing pain recurrence with progression, which required successive increases in carbamazepine dosage. Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) showed dilatation of the right MC with extension to the petrous apex. The lesion was compatible with arachnoid cyst, and due to the worsening of the clinical condition, surgical treatment was chosen. Percutaneous puncture of the cyst through the foramen ovale with injection of intracystic fibrin sealant was performed. The patient woke up from anesthesia with pain improvement and was discharged asymptomatic the next day. After 12 months of follow-up, she remained pain-free. In the literature review, we found only eight cases reported as MC arachnoid cyst. These are likely to progress and become symptomatic owing to their communication with the subarachnoid space and a unidirectional valve mechanism. Pain improvement with this technique is probably secondary to the interruption of these mechanisms.

ABSTRACT

Abstract: Limiting factors of subterranean environments, high relative air humidity and, especially, permanent darkness, represent ecological filters for organisms and biodiversity patterns of surface and subterranean communities display wide disparities. Subterranean diversity and singularity are, thus, better expressed when the common presence of rare and endemic species are considered. Our study aimed to describe the diversity of the cave fauna from 14 caves from Peruaçu Caves National Park (PCNP), eastern Brazil. We analyzed the regional diversity using the index that includes the average taxonomic distinction (TD - Δ +, AvTD). We recorded 1,674 individuals belonging to 10 Classes and 237 morphotypes, 11 troglobitic and two troglomorphic and possible troglobites. Greatest species abundance (N=330) and richness (s=76) were recorded at Lapa do Cipó cave, followed by Gruta Olhos d'Água (N=330, s=71), which shows the highest TD value (Δ + = 90.18) in relation to the others, including the richest Lapa do Cipó (Δ + = 85.24), consequence of the several taxonomic units with large number of species. The below-expected values of TD (Δ + = 87.70) may indicate anthropic impacts on these communities. Our results demonstrate that Gruta Olhos d' Água and Lapa do Cipó caves are the most important sites for the occurrence of endemic and troglobitic species and may be part of a complex system that should be considered for a more efficient conservation planning.


Resumo: Fatores limitantes dos ambientes subterrâneos como alta umidade relativa do ar e, principalmente, a falta de luz, representam filtros ecológicos para organismos e padrões de biodiversidade de comunidades superficiais e subterrâneas, nas quais mostram grandes disparidades. Diversidade e singularidade subterrâneas são, portanto, mais bem expressas quando os presença de espécies raras e endêmicas. Nosso estudo teve como objetivo descrever a diversidade da fauna da caverna de 14 cavernas do Parque Nacional das Cavernas de Peruaçu (PCNP), leste do Brasil. Analisamos a diversidade regional usando o índice que inclui a distinção taxonômica média (TD - Δ +, AvTD). Registramos 1,674 indivíduos pertencentes a 10 classes e 237 morfotipos, 11 troglóbios e dois troglomórficos e possíveis troglóbios. A maior abundância de espécies (N = 330) e riqueza (s = 76) foram registradas na caverna da Lapa do Cipó, seguida por Gruta Olhos d´Água (N = 330, s = 71), que mostra o maior valor de DT (Δ + = 90,18) em relação aos outros, incluindo a Lapa do Cipó mais rica (Δ + = 85,24), consequência das várias unidades taxonômicas com grande número de espécies. Os valores abaixo do esperado de TD (Δ + = 87,70) podem indicar impactos antrópicos nessas comunidades. Nossos resultados demonstram que as cavernas Gruta Olhos d 'Água e Lapa do Cipó são os locais mais importantes para a ocorrência de espécies endêmicas e troglóbias e pode fazer parte de um sistema complexo que deve ser considerado por mais planejamento eficiente de conservação.

ABSTRACT

Ossification of parts of the intracranial dura mater is common and is generally accepted as an age-related finding. Additionally, duplication of the abducens nerve along its course to the lateral rectus muscle is a known, although uncommon anatomical variant. During routine cadaveric dissection, an ossified portion of dura mater traveling over the trigeminal nerve's entrance (porus trigeminus) into the middle cranial fossa was observed unilaterally. Ipsilaterally, a duplicated abducens nerve was also observed, with a unique foramen superolateral to the entrance of Dorello's canal. To our knowledge, there has been no existing report of a simultaneous ossified roof of the porus trigeminus with an ipsilateral duplicated abducens nerve. Herein, we discuss this case and the potential clinical and surgical applications. We believe this case report will be informative for the skull base surgeon in the diagnosis of neuralgic pain in the frontomaxillary, andibular, orbital, and external and middle ear regions.

ABSTRACT

The present study presents the case of a 66-year-old patient diagnosed with prostate adenocarcinoma 4 years earlier and treated with prostatectomy, radiotherapy, chemotherapy and hormonetherapy but still displaying high prostate-specific antigen (PSA) levels. The patient complaints were double vision and headaches. Upon physical examination, he displayed 6th cranial nerve paresis and 5th cranial nerve paresthesia. Amagnetic resonance imaging (MRI) exam was performed, which revealed a mass on the right trigeminal cave. The patient underwent surgical removal of the tumor, and the pathological analysis of the specimen established metastatic prostate cancer as the diagnosis. Brainmetastases fromprostate cancer are extremely rare and mark advanced disease, with immune system failure and blood-brain barrier breach. Prostate-specific antigen levels do not correlate with the possibility of metastatic disease. Prostate adenocarcinoma is the histologic typemost commonly associated with brainmetastases,with themeninges being more frequently affected, followed by the brain parenchyma. The neurological symptoms more often displayed are non-focal, such as headaches and mental confusion. Surgery associated with radiotherapy is the most validated treatment.

ABSTRACT

RESUMEN El cavum de Meckel (CM) es un divertículo localizado en la fosa media adyacente al seno cavernoso. Las neoplasias de esta región son extremadamente raras y representan un desafío para el cirujano debido a las estructuras neurovasculares que se encuentran en la región. Para los tumores ubicados en esta área se han descrito diversos abordajes quirúrgicos, los cuales no logran una adecuada exposición a la porción anteromedial del CM. En la última década, se ha postulado el abordaje endoscópico endonasal extendido (AEE) como una alternativa quirúrgica para el manejo de lesiones ubicadas en esta región. Se presenta el caso de un paciente portador de un schwannoma del nervio trigémino situado en el CM derecho tratado mediante AEE.


ABSTRACT The Meckel's cave (CM) is a diverticulum located in the middle fossa adjacent to the cavernous sinus. The neoplasms of this region are extremely rare and represent a challenge for the surgeon due to the neurovascular structures that occupy and surround the parasellar region. For tumors located in this area, several surgical approaches have been described, all of which do not achieve an adequate exposure to the anteromedial portion of CM. In the last decade, the extended endonasal endoscopic approach (EEA) has been postulated as an alternative for the surgical management of tumors located in this region. We present the case of a patient with a trigeminal schwannoma located in the right CM treated by EEA.

Objective@#To observe the clinical effect of acupuncture Yingxiang point in the treatment of hiccups.@*Methods@#120 cases with hiccups were selected, and they were randomly divided into treatment group and control group according to the digital table, 60 cases in each group.The control group was given conventional acupoint acupuncture.The treatment group received acupuncture internal Yingxiang acupuncture point.The total effective rate and effective time of treatment were observed.@*Results@#The total effective rate of the treatment group was 100.0%, which of the control group was 96.7%, the difference between the two groups was not statistically significant (P>0.05). The effective time between the two groups had statistically significant difference (χ2=10.75, P=0.00).@*Conclusion@#Acupuncture Yingxiang point in the treatment of hiccups can enhance the treatment effect and shorten treatment time.

ABSTRACT Amblypygids are among the main predators in the ferriferous caves in Carajás National Forest, state of Pará (Amazon region of Brazil). One of the most common amblypygid species in this region is Heterophrynus longicornis (Butler 1873), and its most frequent prey are crickets of the family Phalangopsidae, which are abundant in the caves of Pará. Because they are primarily predators, necrophagy by amblypygids is not frequent in nature, and there are only two literature records of necrophagy of bats by Amblypygi. On December 11th, 2013, we observed an individual H. longicornis eating a bat carcass in a Pará ferriferous cave. The amblypygid exhibited considerable interest in the bats carcass, and it did not interrupt its meal even when lamps or a cameras flash were pointed in its direction. The availability of nutrients in the carcass must promote this opportunistic behavior in caves, especially considering the habitual scarcity of trophic resources in underground environments when compared to epigean environments.


RESUMO Amblipígios são considerados um dos principais predadores em cavernas de litologia ferrífera localizadas na Floresta Nacional de Carajás no estado do Pará (região da Amazônia brasileira). Uma das espécies de amblipígios mais comuns nesta região é Heterophrynus longicornis (Butler 1873), e uma das presas mais frequentes são grilos da família Phalangopsidae, abundantes nas cavernas do Pará. Por serem predadores, a necrofagia em amblipígeos foi pouco observada na natureza, sendo que existem dois registros na literatura sobre necrofagia de morcegos por amblipígios. Em 11 de dezembro de 2013, observamos um H. longicornis se alimentando da carcaça de um morcego em uma caverna de litologia ferrífera da Floresta Nacional de Carajás. Aparentemente, havia um interesse considerável pela carcaça do morcego por parte do amblipígio, uma vez que o indivíduo não interrompeu sua alimentação, mesmo quando iluminado por lanternas e o flash da câmera. A abundância de nutrientes na carcaça deve favorecer este comportamento oportunístico em cavernas, especialmente quando se considera a habitual escassez de recursos tróficos destes ambientes subterrâneos, quando comparados a ambientes epígeos.

Results A total of 4 variation sites that m aybe significa-tive w ere identified in SU D group, and tw o w ere new found w hich w ere CAV1: c.45C>T (T 15T ) and CAV1:c.512G>A (R 171H ), and tw o w ere SN P loci w hich w ere CAV1:c.246C>T (rs35242077) and CAV3:c.99C>T (rs1008642) and had significant difference (P<0.05) in allele and genotype frequencies betw een SU D and control groups. Forem entioned variation sites w ere not found in C A D group. Conclu-sion T he variants of CAV1 and CAV3 m ay be correlated w ith a part of SU D group.

ABSTRACT

Objective To investigate the clinical efficacy of entecavir in the treatment of hepatitis B cirrhosis associated with hepatic diabetes. Methods 78 cases of hepatitis B Hepatic Cirrhosis with diabetes were selectedfrom June 2015 to December 2016, and randomly divided into study group (n=39) and control group (n=39). The study group were treated with entecavir, the control group were treated with adefovir dipivoxil. Two groups of patients with hepatitis B cirrhosis combined with hepatic diabetes were treated continuously for 48 weeks, the changes of FPG, HOMA-β, beta and HOMA-IR were recorded. Results There was no significant difference between the two groups in the treatment of FPG, HOMA-β, and HOMA-IR. After treatment, the two groups of FPG and HOMA-IR decreased significantly compared with before treatment, while HOMA-β was significantly higher than before treatment, but the changes of the above indexes in the study group were better than those in the control group (P<0.05). Conclusion Entecavir combined with hypoglycemic agents can achieve more ideal blood glucose control effect in patients with hepatitis B cirrhosis combined with hepatic diabetes..

Objective To investigate the clinical efficacy of entecavir in the treatment of hepatitis B cirrhosis associated with hepatic diabetes. Methods 78 cases of hepatitis B Hepatic Cirrhosis with diabetes were selectedfrom June 2015 to December 2016, and randomly divided into study group (n=39) and control group (n=39). The study group were treated with entecavir, the control group were treated with adefovir dipivoxil. Two groups of patients with hepatitis B cirrhosis combined with hepatic diabetes were treated continuously for 48 weeks, the changes of FPG, HOMA-β, beta and HOMA-IR were recorded. Abstract In the present study we analyzed the bat assemblage of the granitic cave Gruta do Riacho Subterrâneo and its surroundings (Itu, São Paulo state, Brazil) aiming to verify the influence of seasonality on its species composition and population abundances. Five samplings were carried out with three days of duration each, along the period from October 2013 to September 2014. Captures of bats were performed by setting mist nets in cave entrances, its interior and surroundings, making a total capture effort of 6,090 m2.h. Our results indicate that this cave is shelter for a rich bat assemblage with fifteen species captured. Carollia perspicillata, Desmodus rotundus and Myotis sp. were the most abundant species. A comparison of the assemblage composition with that of other caves of São Paulo state revealed that its composition is very similar and typical of the Atlantic Forest Atlantic cave chiropterofauna independently of cave lithology. A multiple regression analysis performed to check for the existence of correlation between the seasonal fluctuation of the climatic variables temperature, pluviosity and air humidity did not reveal significant relationships among these and the changes in the abundance of bats. However, the analysis of canonical correspondence including these variables and also moonlight luminosity indicated a significant relationship of the changes in bat abundance with the air relative humidity. Changes in bat abundances are probably related to the seasonality in food availability. The accumulation curve obtained from the relationship between the accumulated richness of species and the number of samples showed that more samplings are required to reach the asymptote of species richness. Considering that Gruta do Riacho Subterrâneo is the largest granitic cave in Brazil and that it shelters a high number of bat species, including common and rare species, we suggests the preservation of this cave for maintenance of bat diversity in São Paulo state.


Resumo No presente estudo analisamos a assembleia de morcegos da caverna granítica Gruta do Riacho Subterrâneo e sua área de entorno (Itu, estado de São Paulo, Brasil) com o objetivo de verificar a influência da sazonalidade na composição de espécies e na abundância das populações. Foram realizadas cinco amostragens com duração de três dias cada, ao longo do período de outubro de 2013 a setembro de 2014, utilizando redes-de-neblina instaladas nas entradas, no interior da caverna e em seu entorno, totalizando um esforço de captura de 6.090 m2.h. Nossos resultados indicam que esta caverna abriga uma assembleia rica, onde foram capturadas quinze espécies. Carollia perspicillata, Desmodus rotundus e Myotis sp. foram as espécies mais abundantes. A comparação da composição desta assembleia com a de outras cavernas do estado de São Paulo revelou que suas espécies são similares e típicas da quiropterofauna de cavernas da Mata Atlântica, independentemente da litologia das mesmas. A análise de regressão múltipla utilizada para a relação entre a variação sazonal das variáveis temperatura, pluviosidade e umidade relativa do ar não revelou correlação significativa entre estas e as variações na abundância das diferentes espécies de morcegos. Contudo a análise de correspondência canônica incluindo, além destas, a variável luminosidade da lua indicou uma correlação significativa com a umidade relativa do ar. As variações nas abundâncias dos morcegos provavelmente estão relacionadas à sazonalidade na disponibilidade de alimento. A curva de acumulação obtida pela relação entre a riqueza de espécies e o número de amostragens acumuladas mostrou que mais amostragens são necessárias para atingir a assíntota da riqueza de espécies. Considerando-se que a Gruta do Riacho Subterrâneo é a maior caverna granítica do Brasil e que abriga uma elevada riqueza de espécies de morcegos, incluido raras e comuns, nós sugerimos a preservação desta caverna para a manutenção da diversidade morcegos no estado de São Paulo.

ABSTRACT

Paleopathologists have begun exploring the pathoecology of parasitic diseases in relation to diet and environment. We are summarizing the parasitological findings from a mummy in the site of Lapa do Boquete, a Brazilian cave in the state of Minas Gerais. These findings in context of the archaeology of the site provided insights into the pathoecology of disease transmission in cave and rockshelter environments. We are presenting a description of the site followed by the evidence of hookworm, intestinal fluke, and Trypanosoma infection with resulting Chagas disease in the mummy discovered in the cave. These findings are used to reconstruct the transmission ecology of the site.

Quadrat sampling is a method used for a long time in plant ecology studies but only recently it has been used with focus on fauna. For the cave fauna samplings, there are rare works applying this methodology. The present study compared the methods of quadrat sampling with direct search qualitative for terrestrial cave fauna. For this, we conducted five sampling collections in a limestone cave in central Brazil. Quadrat sampling contributed with 121 exclusive species and 716 specimens and direct search qualitative method contributed with 91 exclusive species and 355 specimens. Mann-Whitney test evidenced significant differences between the two methods. We demonstrated that quadrat sampling method was slightly more efficient to analyze the species richness and much more effective to assess the abundance than the use of only direct search qualitative method, mainly considering tiny and/or cryptobiotic invertebrates (e.g., earth worms, symphylans, psocopterans, trichopterans, dipterans, small spiders, and small isopods). We recommend the association of different methods to test patterns in cave fauna, since incomplete sampling may lead to erroneous estimates and equivocated decisions about management, impact studies and cave conservation.


Amostragem por quadrados é um mé todo utilizado há muito tempo em estudos ecológicos botânicos e apenas recentemente tem sido utilizado com foco em estudos faunísticos. Para amostragens em cavernas, raros trabalhos aplicaram esta metodologia. Nosso trabalho compara o método de amostragem por quadrados com o de busca ativa qualitativa sobre a fauna cavernícola terrestre. Para tal, realizamos cinco eventos de coleta em uma caverna calcária do Brasil central. A amostragem, utilizando o método de quadrados, contribuiu com 121 espécies exclusivas e 716 espécimes. O método de busca ativa contribuiu com 91 espécies exclusivas e 355 espécimes. O teste de Mann-Whitney mostrou diferenças significativas entre os dois métodos. Demonstramos que o método de amostragem de quadrados foi sutilmente mais eficiente para acessar a riqueza de espé cies e muito mais efetivo para acessar a abundância do que apenas a utilização do método qualitativo de busca ativa, principalmente para invertebrados diminutos e/ou criptobióticos (por exemplo, vermes, sínfilos, psocópteros, tricópteros, dípteros, pequenas aranhas e pequenos isópodes). Recomendamos o uso de métodos combinados para o teste de padrões da fauna cavernícola, uma vez que amostragens incompletas podem levar a estimativas erradas e decisões equivocadas acerca de manejo, estudos de impacto e conservação de cavernas.

ABSTRACT

The troglobitic electric fish Eigenmannia vicentespelaea, endemic to a single cave-system and included in the Brazilian Red List of Threatened Fauna, was studied in relation to population densities and habitat. For comparison, we used the epigean species, E. trilineata. We verify if the population densities recorded for E. vicentespelaea follow the pattern observed for other subterranean fishes; if there are seasonal fluctuations in these densities and which environmental variables explain the densities variation. We estimated abundances and population densities during three consecutive dry seasons concomitant with habitat description and physicochemical variables measurements. For E. vicentespelaea: in six stream reaches in the São Vicente II cave. For E. trilineata: from counts of active fish in rio da Lapa. The mean population density recorded for E. vicentespelaea is considered low (0.17 ind.m-2), similar to those of E. trilineata (0.13 ind.m-2), without significant differences between the years, but with marked fluctuations during dry seasons within each year, suggesting seasonality. Estimated population size of E. vicentespelaea is considered low (270 individuals in average). Depth, water current and substrate, allied to plant debris explain better the variation of densities. Urgent actions for E. vicentespelaea conservation include protection of headsprings in Terra Ronca State Park.


O peixe troglóbio Eigenmannia vicentespelaea, endêmico de um único sistema de cavernas e incluído na Lista Brasileira de Fauna Ameaçada foi estudado em relação às densidades populacionais e hábitat. Para comparação utilizamos a espécie epígea E. trilineata. Verificamos se as densidades populacionais registradas para E. vicentespelaea seguem o padrão observado para outros peixes subterrâneos; se há flutuações sazonais nestas densidades e quais variáveis ambientais explicam as variações nas densidades. Estimamos as abundâncias e densidades populacionais ao longo de três estações secas consecutivas, concomitantes à descrição do habitat e das variáveis físico-químicas. Para E. vicentespelaea: em seis trechos de rio ao longo da caverna São Vicente II. Para E. trilineata: na contagem de peixes ativos no rio da Lapa. A densidade populcional média registrada para E. vicentespelaea é baixa (0,17 ind.m-2), similar à observada para E. trilineata (0,13 ind.m-2), sem diferenças significativas entre os anos, mas com flutuações marcantes ao longo das estações secas dentro de cada ano, sugerindo sazonalidade. O tamanho populacional estimado para E. vicentespelaea é considerado pequeno (270 indivíduos em média). Profundidade, correnteza, substrato, aliadas à concentração de detrito vegetal explicam melhor a variação nas densidades. Ações urgentes para conservação de E. vicentespelaea incluem a proteção das nascentes do Parque Estadual de Terra Ronca.

Twenty four bacterial strains from four different regions of mud volcano and lime cave were isolated to estimate their diversity, plant growth promoting and biocontrol activities to use them as inoculant strains in the fields. An excellent antagonistic effect against four plant pathogens and plant growth promoting properties such as IAA production, HCN production, phosphate solubilization, siderophore production, starch hydrolysis and hydrolytic enzymes syntheses were identified in OM5 (Pantoea agglomerans) and EM9 (Exiguobacterium sp.) of 24 studied isolates. Seeds (Chili and tomato) inoculation with plant growth promoting strains resulted in increased percentage of seedling emergence, root length and plant weight. Results indicated that co-inoculation gave a more pronounced effects on seedling emergence, secondary root numbers, primary root length and stem length, while inoculation by alone isolate showed a lower effect. Our results suggest that the mixed inocula of OM5 and EM9 strains as biofertilizers could significantly increase the production of food crops in Andaman archipelago by means of sustainable and organic agricultural system.
