ABSTRACT

Having as an incentive the celebration of the 15th anniversary of the "Sport: Laboratory of History of Sport and Leisure", this essay aims to discuss the peculiarities of the organization of a research group in a peripheral situation. At first, the concept of periphery is debated in order to situate the challenges of both research and the constitution of an academic field. Subsequently, some reflections on the limits, possibilities and potential of insertion in the international scientific scenario are presented. Finally, it is concluded that assuming that, today, we are peripheral does not mean accepting that we will always be like that, nor that we should aim at the center. It is suggested that it is more interesting to envisage a world in which the center-periphery relationship is no longer sustained, something that cannot happen only in the field of discursive illusions that do not require a deep empirical understanding.

ABSTRACT

The aim of this article is to analyze, under the reference of critical studies on transfer of knowledge between center and periphery, how the mental test was implemented in Brazil and came to be used in the students selection process of the Escola Técnica Nacional between 1942 and 1959. The methodology used set up an exploratory-descriptive study in the form of document analysis and has revealed that more than a strictly scientific procedure, the test served to give an appearance of scientific and modernity to the government projects.

ABSTRACT

The bonds established by Venezuela from 1933 to 1955 with Argentina, Uruguay and Mexico formed the groundwork for the Venezuelan State's efforts to foster knowledge and skills in the field of veterinary medicine. The countries in question exerted an influence at different stages in the growth of the veterinary community in Venezuela. This study describes an experience of how scientific and technical ties are not always forged along center-periphery lines, showing that there are peripheral societies capable of operating as points of reference or intermediaries in the transfer of knowledge.
