ABSTRACT

SUMMARY: The normal morphology of the colon differs among mammal species. The ascending colon presents several types of cells, responsible for carrying different functions for this organ. Among them, the mucus-secreting cells ensure the integrity of the mucosa, local defense, protection against different external factors, inflammatory diseases, cancer, etc. The ascending colon from 5 adult male chinchillas were processed for paraffin embedding and stained with three methods: Goldner's trichrome, PAS reaction, and Alcian blue staining procedure. The results showed that the structure of the ascending colon is similar to the one described in other species, i.e. mucosa, submucosa, muscularis externa, and serosa. Regarding the mucus-secreting cells present in the deeper part of the mucosal crypts (deep crypt secretory or DCS cells) turned out to be different not only morphologically from the surface goblet cells but also regarding the type of mucus synthesized. DCS cells have a multivacuolated, faintly stained cytoplasm with moderately PAS-positive reaction and intensely positive reaction to Alcian blue stain. The mean surface of DCS cells was 521.6 μm2 as compared to 437.9 μm2 for goblet cells (p<0.05). In conclusion, our study describes for the first time in chinchilla (Chinchilla lanigera) the presence of formerly known non-goblet or vacuolated cells, and recently entitled DCS cells in the glandular epithelium of the colon. The understanding of morphological peculiarities in chinchilla may serve as a good basis to understand the pathophysiology of various conditions that may arise.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT Lagomorphs and histricomorphs, as guinea pigs and chinchillas, have common dental characteristics, such as the elodont and hypsodont teeth. These peculiarities predispose to the presentation of malocclusion due to the consumption of inadequate, non-abrasive diets. The purpose of this work is to identify the prevalence of malocclusion in each case. In addition, it aims to make an objective evaluation of the radiological studies of the specimens, based on anatomical reference lines, to determine the main radiographic findings according to the degree of malocclusion clinically diagnosed. 30% of the individuals evaluated presented malocclusion problems being 42.86% rabbits, 16.6% guinea pigs and 23% chinchillas. There is no evidence of significant differences in the presentation by sex. In rabbits, the diagnosis of the specimens from the group I and II were more common, while in guinea pigs they were II and Ill. Grade I and II were the most diagnosed in rabbits and guinea pigs. In the radiographs, the most common lesions are the overgrowth of the maxillary and mandibular roots, elongation of the incisors, loss of the occlusal surface and deformation of the mandibular roots. A method of correction for LL radiographic projections with evident rotation is proposed to maintain the objectivity of the radiographic evaluation.

ABSTRACT

In a small-scale chinchilla intensive production system, managed on the basis of an experimental protocol with artificial control of the photoperiod, 24 productive-reproductive indicators were surveyed for three consecutive years. The values of all indicators were similar or higher than those reported in the literature in different production systems. This can be explained by: (1) the average fertility maintained during the period studied, generated in part by the annual systematic scrap of all females without registered birth, regardless of their skin phenotype; (2) the size of litter at birth and weaning, which although showed values within the range of bibliographic reference, were accompanied by an acceptable percentage of total mortality, and (3) births per reproductive female per year and per mother per year above most of the data referenced in the literature, attributable to the stimulation determined by photoperiodic management. The values reported in the Experimental Module surpassed in one kitten weaned per mother and per year, the enterprises dedicated to the production of chinchillas of the area of influence of the FCV-UNR.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT: The aim of this research was to measure the intraocular pressure (IOP) of normal chinchilla eyes using the rebound tonometer. A further aim was to assess whether there were differences in the values of intraocular pressure in relation to animals age, gender and time of day. Thirty-six chinchillas were divided into three groups of 12 chinchillas each, by age: Group I (2-6-month-old), Group II (20 and 34 months) and Group III (37 and 135 months). Ophthalmic examination was performed previously by Schirmer tear test, slit lamp biomicroscopy, indirect ophthalmoscopy and fluorescein test in all chinchillas. Three measurements of intraocular pressure were assessed on the same day (7, 12 and 19h). Tonometry was performed on both eyes using the rebound tonometer after calibration in "p" mode. Statistical analysis was performed with SigmaPlot for Windows. The mean IOP for groups I, II and III were 2.47±0.581mmHg, 2.47±0.581mmHg and 2.51±0.531mmHg, respectively. No significant differences were reported between age and IOP and no significant differences were reported between the time of day and IOP. The IOP in chinchillas did not differ significantly between genders or ages of the animals, and did not change with time of day.

ABSTRACT

Adult chinchillas (Chinchilla lanigera) that had suddenly died in a commercial farm located in La Plata City, Buenos Aires Province, Argentina, in July 2012 were macroscopically, histopathologically, and microbiologically examined. Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium (S. Typhimurium) was isolated from the liver, spleen, heart, lungs, kidneys and intestines from each of the five animals evaluated. The five strains were susceptible to ampicillin, cephalotin, cefotaxime, nalidixic acid, gentamicin, streptomycin, chloramphenicol, fosfomycin, nitrofurantoin and trimethoprimsulfamethoxazole, and resistant to tetracycline. Each of the five S. Typhimurium isolates was analyzed by XbaI- pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE), showing an identical electrophoretic profile with 15 defined bands, which was found to be identical to pattern ARJPXX01.0220 of the PulseNet Argentine National database of Salmonella PFGE patterns. This is the first work describing the postmortem diagnosis of an outbreak of salmonellosis in chinchillas by using molecular methods such as PFGE

ABSTRACT

Aim: This study aimed to investigate the effects of Escravos crude oil on serum concentrations of testosterone, total cholesterol, body weight, relative weight and microanatomical architecture of the testis using male Chinchilla Rabbits. Place and Duration of Study: This study was carried out at the Department of Medical Laboratory Science, Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Nnewi Campus between May and June 2013 (28 days). Methodology: A total of thirty male Chinchilla Rabbits aged 12 to 14 weeks and weighing 1.2kg to 1.45kg was used. Crude oil was administered orally at the doses of 15, 20, 25 and 30mg/kg body weight to groups designated B, C, D and E respectively for 28 days, while group A was given normal saline. Serum concentration of testosterone and total cholesterol were estimated using the microplate enzyme immunoassay and enzymatic end point methods, respectively. The SPSS software (version 20) was used for the statistical analysis and the result expressed in mean ± SD. Result: The results showed dose dependent effects on the hormone and biochemical assays, especially at the concentration of 25mg/kg body weight of the administered crude oil. Significant increases in serum concentrations of testosterone (0.32+/-0.05 to 0.46+/- 0.14) and total cholesterol (1.35+/-0.17 to 1.76+/-0.15) concentrations (p≤.05), and insignificant increase (p≥.05) in the relative weight of the testis (4.80+/-0.40 to 6.50+/- 0.90) were observed. The histology of the testes revealed hypertrophy of the seminiferous tubules, atrophy of the basal lamina and interstitial cells, and hemochromatosis. The histological findings agree with the hormonal and biochemical findings. Conclusion: These findings suggest that Escravos crude oil might be a potential endocrine disruptor and toxic substance which can affect the micro-anatomical architecture of the testis.

ABSTRACT

Digestive disorders caused by sudden changes in diet or inappropriate diet are among the most common disorders of the digestive system. Cecal or intestinal tympany, one consequence of inappropriate diet, is characterized by the accumulation of gases, marked distension of the cecum and colon and the induction of inflammatory processes. To know the effects of intestinal tympany on the enteric plexuses, we developed a method of experimental tympanic colic (TC) in the Chinchilla lanigera. This species was used in view of its susceptibility to TC. TC was induced with a diet rich in alfalfa associated with grain overload for two weeks. Physical and clinical examination including the von Frey test confirmed the diagnosis. The chinchillas with acute abdomen were treated with 1% ketoprofen and resumption of a balanced diet. Necropsy and histopathological analysis showed tympany-induced alterations mainly in the cecum and colon. After treatment, the control conditions were restored. The TC protocol is proposed as an experimental approach designed to aid the study of the effects of acute intestinal inflammation and obstruction caused by an inappropriate diet.

ABSTRACT

This study aimed at presenting the values of 47 metric traits and 20 cranial indices of the skull of 291 mature farm chinchillas and comparing these data with those being determined on 32 chinchilla skull specimens from the Natural History Museum in London. Measurements of the viscerocranium, neurocranium and mandible parameters were taken. No normal distribution of these traits was observed. The values of selected Spearman's rank correlation coefficients were calculated. It was found that most cranial traits of the farm chinchillas showed statistically significantly higher values (P0.01) when compared to those being determined on the skulls of museum specimens. The effect of the farm environment, in which the farm chinchillas had been kept for many generations, was a likely reason for these differences.

ABSTRACT

Yersinia enterocolitica is a Gram-negative bacterium, which causes infections in several mammalian species. It is often recognized as an agent causing intestinal and mesenteric lymph nodes lesions. However, Yersinia enterocolitica infection may also become systemic, with lesions in others organs such as liver and spleen. This paper describes outbreaks of systemic infection due to Yersinia enterocolitica in two commercial chinchilla breeders in Rio Grande do Sul (Brazil). Owners reported that affected animals showed apathy, anorexia prior to death. Macroscopic examination performed in 13 animals revealed splenomegaly, hepatomegaly and multifocal whitish pinpoint foci in liver, spleen, lung, kidney and intestine. Microscopically, the affected tissues had infiltration of neutrophils and macrophages, as well as fibrin and necrosis with central areas containing cocobacilli bacteria. Yersinia enterocolitica was isolated from liver, spleen, lung and intestine samples from animals of both breeders, and from feces of chinchillas of one of the breeders. Therefore, yersiniosis is a disease to be investigated in cases of mortality of chinchillas.

ABSTRACT

Four outbreaks of ionophore toxicosis are described in chinchillas from four commercial farms located in three municipalities in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, southern Brazil. Approximately 2,000 chinchillas showed decrease in food intake one week after start ingesting a ration containing 37 ppm of salinomycin. Four hundred and twenty seven chinchillas showed apathy. Of those 277 develop sternal and lateral recumbence, dyspnea and coma followed by death. First deaths occurred eight days after the start on the salinomycin containing ration; clinical course was 2-5 days. Serum chemistry carried out in four chinchillas revealed increased levels of alanine transaminase, aspartate transaminase, alkaline phosphatase, creatinenin kinase, glucose, triglicerids and total cholesterol. Forty five affected chinchillas were necropsied; consistent necropsy findings were marked hepatic lipidosis; additionally twelve pregnant chinchillas had dead decomposing fetuses. Microscopically skeletal muscles had multifocally swollen hypereosinophilic myofibers with loss of cross striations. In those chinchillas that survived longer than a few days, microscopic features in the skeletal muscle included segmental fragmentation of dead fibers (floccular necrosis) and myofiber regeneration. Marked fatty degeneration was observed in the livers of all affected chinchillas. No microscopic changes were observed in other organs. Chemical analysis in the feed consumed by the chinchillas did not detect aflatoxins or pesticides residues; bacterial culture performed in samples of liver and intestinal contents from necropsied chinchillas yielded no significant bacterial growth. Analysis by thin layer chromatography performed in the ration consumed by the chinchillas detected 37 ppm of salinomycin. The suspected ration was fed to 12 chinchillas three of which (25 percent) died with similar lesions to those observed in the natural cases. The diagnosis of salinomycin toxicosis was based in the epidemiology, histology of the lesions, on the detection of significant amounts of salinomycin in the ration used to feed the chinchillas in the four involved farms and on the reproduction of disease by feeding the suspected ration to susceptible chinchillas.

ABSTRACT

Four 3-4 month-old chinchillas (Chinchilla lanigera) from a commercial flock of 395 chinchillas, were found dead with evidence of previous diarrhea and prolapsed rectum. A fifth 8 month-old chinchilla died 8 hours after being found recumbent, apathetic, diarrheic and with a prolapsed rectum. Two chinchillas were necropsied and observed gross lesions consisted of extensive hemorrhagic enteritis, mild pulmonary edema and enlarged and yellow liver; this latter finding was particularly prominent in the chinchilla presenting longer clinical course. Histologically there was necrotizing enteritis associated with abundant bacterial rods aggregates in the intestinal surface epithelium and within the lamina propria. In the lungs there were small amounts of pink proteinaceous material (edema) in the interstitium and marked vacuolar hepatocellullar degeneration (lipidosis) in the liver. Anaerobic cultures from the intestinal contents of one of the affected chinchillas yielded Clostridium perfringens. Genotyping of this C. perfringens isolate was achieved by multiplex polymerase chain reaction (mPCR) as C. perfringenstype B due to detection of alpha, beta and epsilon-toxin genes. These findings suggest C. perfringens type B as an important cause of sudden or acute death in chinchillas.

ABSTRACT

The present study has analyzed thirty chinchilla (Chinchilla lanigera) brains, injected with latex, aiming tosystematize and describe the distribution and the vascularization territories of the rostral cerebral artery. Therostral cerebral artery was the terminal branch of the terminal branch, right and left, of the basilar artery, projected from the emittion of the middle cerebral artery, rostromedially, crossing dorsally the optic nerve untilit reaches the cerebral longitudinal fissure, ventrally. Its branches were distributed mostly on the paleopallium, supplying the olfactory trigone, the medial olfactory tract, the olfactory peduncle and the olfactory bulb. The branches to the neopallium vascularized the entire medial surface, except for the tenctorial part of it, thefrontal pole and a zone that was extended from the frontal to the occipital poles, medially to the vallecula,on the convex surface of the cerebral hemisphere. The first collateral branch of the rostral cerebral artery wasthe medial branch, which entered into the longitudinal fissure of the brain and continued as rostral interhemisphericartery. The rostral cerebral artery continued rostrally emitting central branches and the medialand lateral arteries of the olfactory bulb, to the paleopallial region of the chinchilla brain. After the emittion ofthe medial artery of the olfactory bulb, the rostral cerebral artery continued to follow the cerebral longitudinalfissure, as internal ethmoidal artery, its terminal branch.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT

The aim of this study was to describe the morphological and topographic aspects of the chinchilla’s digestive apparatus (DA) through dissection of 10 animals. We collected the DA segments and made the volumetric analysis of cavitary organs through injection of saline solution at 60°C, and measuring of the tubular organs. The parenchymal organs were weighed. During analysis of the position of organs, evisceration and measuring, was observed that the oral cavity is typical of rodents, the salivary glands are similar to lagomorphs and organs as esophagus, stomach, duodenum, transversal colon, liver, pancreas and spleen were disposed in similar way to described to other species. On the other hand, jejunum and descending colon were found to be very long and disposed on a wavy way, hanging from the roof of the abdominal cavity. The ileum was found to be similar to other species, but its disposition topographic is from the right to the left, heading to cecum, which is made of two well developed distinct portions. Both portions are located to the left of the median plane. Ascending colon is disposed in a very particular way, in which we observe a double loop which makes a circle at the liver. A relevant characteristic was in evidence comparing the rectum of males and females: males' is longer. Based on these data we conclude that despite the fact that chinchillas are rodents, they have particular characteristics of their own, and other characteristics similar to lagomorphs, being then a connection between these orders.

ABSTRACT

The testicular parameters and sperm morphology were studied in twenty healthy Chinchilla breed bucks of rabbits fed with different planes of soybean meal. Their ages were between 6 to 10 months with their weights ranging from 1.4 to 1.9kg.The same quality of feeds was fed to each group throughout the study and at the rate of 0.5kg/head/day. The feeds contained graded percentage of soybean meal and growers mash. Semen used in this study was from the caudal epididymides while morphological aberrations were determined from a total count of 400 spermatozoa in smears obtained with Wells and Awa stain. Results of the spermiogram showed that the colour and consistency of the semen appreciated as the percentage of soybean meal increased. Group D with 90% soybean meal was significantly higher (P<0.05) over and above the values of other groups. Group D had a significant increase (P<0.05) over and above values of other groups in terms of percentage live spermatozoa. Semen concentration increased from 1.20 + 1.56 xl0(6)/ml in group B with 30% soymeal to 2.00+2.67 xl0(6)/ml in group D with 90% soymeal. Testicular parameters also showed that there was more weights increase as the percentage of soymeal in the feed increased. It is therefore concluded and recommended that soymeal can be part of normal diet of Chinchilla Rabbit without any adverse effect on the reproductive potential of the male rabbit.
