Tumor condrolipomatoso (condrolipoma) de mama / Chondrolipoma of the breast

Introduction: Cartilage is an uncommon component in breast lesions, most of cases it correspond to metaplasia of malignant neoplasm and its occurrence in benign tumors is exceptional. Cartilage- containing breast benign tumors has been subclassified by their majors features accord to each author, but their main composition remains to be adipose tissue, fibrous stroma and cartilage, with or without breast epithelium. Chondrolipoma of the breast was reported for the first time by Kaplan in 1977, and since then reports of this entity has been anecdotal with less than 20 cases published. Clinical case: We expose the first case diagnosed of chondrolipoma of the breast in Colombia, performed on the Pathology Department of Universidad Industrial de Santander (Bucaramanga-Colombia) along with a literature review, due to the low frequency of this diagnosis and the few information about it.

Introducción: El cartílago es un componente poco común en las lesiones de mama, la mayoría de casos corresponden a metaplasias de lesiones malignas siendo excepcional el hallazgo en lesiones benignas; estas últimas se han subclasificado de acuerdo a las características histológicas destacables para cada autor, pero globalmente se componen de tejido adiposo, estroma fibroso y cartílago, mientras que el componente epitelial mamario es de presentación variable. El condrolipoma de mama fue reportado por primera vez en 1977 por Kaplan y desde esa fecha los reportes han sido anecdóticos con menos de 20 casos publicados. Caso clínico: Se expone el primer caso diagnosticado en Colombia de condrolipoma de mama, diagnóstico efectuado en el Departamento de Patología de la Universidad Industrial de Santander (Bucaramanga-Colombia) y se hace una revisión de la literatura de esta entidad, dada la baja frecuencia de su diagnóstico y a la escasa información al respecto.

A Case Report of Lipoma with Chondro-Osteoblastic Metaplasia

Lipomas, which are benign adipose tissue tumors, are the most common tumors of mesenchymal origin in humans. Some variants of lipoma have been described according to the type of tissue present. A rare variant consists of a lipoma with osseous or cartilaginous metaplasia. We present the case of a lipoma with chondro-osteoblastic metaplasia of right buttock in a 57-year-old male. He was referred for a painless mass on the right lateral margin of the buttock, and present for about 1 month. Magnetic resonance images revealed a 12x8x4 cm sized mass with secondary degeneration focally, involving deep portion of the right gluteus maximus muscle, and protruded to adductor magnus muscle. T1 weighted images showed signal enhancement within the mass. He underwent complete resection of the tumor. No recurrence was observed after five years follow-up. Lipoma with chondro-osteoblastic metaplasia is extremely rare disease. Here, we report it along with the corresponding literature.

Chondrolipoma in the Pelvic Cavity: a Case Report

A chondrolipoma is an extremely rare form of a benign mesenchymal tumor containing mature cartilage and fatty tissue. Chondrolipomas may be found in almost any part of the body, particularly in the connective tissue of the breast, head and neck area, as well as in the skeletal muscle. However, to the best of our knowledge, chondrolipomas located in the pelvic cavity have not been reported. In this case report, we describe a case of a chondrolipoma in the pelvis, and show that it has its own characteristic imaging findings, which included the composition of fatty tissue and calcification in most parts, as well as some focal areas of chondroid tissue based on the CT and MR findings.

Chondrolipoma of the Knee: A Case Report

Chondrolipoma is a benign tumor composed of mature adipose tissue and mature chondrocytes, and very rarely found. The patient, a 36-year-old woman, presented with a firm, walnut sized, mild tender mass at her left knee. There had been dull pain after long walking. There were no limitation of motion in physical examination. On plane lateral radiograph, radioopaque calcific densities were seen in elliptical soft tissue shadow below inferior pole of the patella. Magnetic resonance image demonstrated well defined mass of mixed signal intensity consistent with fat tissue and cartilaginous tissue. Gross specimen showed that the tumor appeared to be a round, encapsulated and firm nodule with milky whitish yellow cut surface. Microscopically the tumor consisted of nodular cartilage and mature fat tissue. The cartilage cells did not show mitotic figure and were often arranged in small clusters. But there were no cytologic features of malignancy. Thus the authors diagnosed this tumor as chondrolipoma, and report it with the literature review.
