ABSTRACT

Epidermal cysts are intradermal or subcutaneous cystic tumors that frequently occur in the face, scalp, neck, and body trunk. Acquired cases of epidermal cyst commonly occur as a result of various surgical operations, chronic irritation, or trauma, all of which may trigger the occurrence of the invagination of squamous epithelium. A 57-year-old man presented with a palpable mass 7 cm×2 cm in size in the upper lip. The patient had a 3-year history of wearing a denture to restore missing bilateral maxillary central and lateral incisors, accompanied by inflammatory findings on the buccal mucosa due to chronic lip irritation. The resected oval-shaped cyst had a size of 5.5 cm×3.0 cm×2.5 cm, and it was an encapsulated mass with a well-defined margin. The histopathology was typical of epidermal cyst. This case of a rare giant upper lip epidermal cyst in a patient wearing a denture may be of interest to clinicians.

ABSTRACT

Fibromas are the benign tumours that are most commonly encountered among the oral soft tissue lesions. They are mostly seen as a protective mechanism of the mucosa towards chronic irritation. They present clinically as a round or ovoid, soft to firm in consistency, exophytic growth, mostly pale pink in colour with smooth surface. These lesions are asymptomatic and do not require any treatment until bothersome to the patient. The clinical features, histopathological features and treatment of an irritational fibroma occurring on the hard palate of a 32 year old female are presented.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: To report a case of Salzmann's nodular degeneration caused by chronic irritation from dry eye and trichiasis. METHODS: A 40-year-old female patient visited our ophthalmology clinic complaining of dryness in both eyes. History taking, measurement of visual acuity and intraocular pressure, and slit-lamp examination were performed. RESULTS: We found greyish white nodular opacities which protruded from the inferior corneal surface, and trichiasis at the lower eyelids. Epilation was performed, artificial tear, and lubricating ointment were prescribed, and therapeutic lens was applied. After 3 months of treatment, the symptom was relieved and nodular opacities diminished. CONCLUSIONS: Phlyctenular keratitis, vernal keratoconjunctivitis, trachoma, scarlet fever, postoperative corneal surgery, hard contact lenses, and keratoconus are well known for the course of Salzmann's nodular degeneration. The chronic irritation from dry eye and trichiasis could be the cause of Salzmann's nodular degeneration.

ABSTRACT

A mucus producing adenomatous tumor, adenocarcinoma of the renal pelvis has been one of the rarest tumors ofthe genito-urinary tract. Presented here is a case report ofa patient who was admitted with pain and lump left loin and was operated upon. The gross morphology and histological features of the specimen were consistent with mucin-secreting adeno-carcinoma ofthe kidney.

ABSTRACT

Hyperkeratosis of the renal pelvis and ureter is a rare condition and is explained by the metaplastic change from transitional to cornified squamous epithelium. This lesion is frequently associated with, and perhaps caused by chronic urinary infection, but potentially premalignant, accompaning with carcinoma in about 10 to 20 per cent of the cases at the time of diagnosis. A case of hyperkeratosis of renal pelvis & ureter which was clinically suspected of carcinoma in a 49-year old woman with a long history of chronic pyelonephritis is presented with review of literature.

ABSTRACT

An experimental study concerning the effect of chronic irritation of corneocytes was made in relation to their number, size and shape. The desquamating portion of the stratum corneum was sampled with the detergent scrub technique using Triton X-100. The experimental subjects were scrub nurses who had worked in the operating room for more than 3 years and ward nurses were used as a control group. The corneocytes of skin irritated by daily scrubbing differed, from those of the non-irritated skin of the ward nurses. About twice as many cells were collected per cm2 skin surface from the scrub nurses on the first experimental day. Two and four days later the number was markedly decreased and became similar to that of the control group. The surface of the corneocytes was 15% smaller in the experimental group than that of the control group, through out the experiment. There was no significant difference between the two groups as regards corneocyte morphology.
