ABSTRACT

Aim: The Total Hydrocarbon Content (THC) levels in the leaves of three edible plants (Allium cepa, Telfairia occidentalis and Zea mays) grown on soil polluted with 100 ml of crude oil were examined. Study Design: This experiment was conducted in two groups where the soil samples were polluted before planting (PB) and polluted 2 weeks after planting (PA). Place and Duration of Study: The research was carried out at the Federal University of Technology, Owerri (FUTO), Imo State, Nigeria, within a period of 4 weeks based on each group’s pollution time. Methodology: The tests for total hydrocarbon content (THC) were analyzed at different wavelengths for polluted soil and leaf samples using UV-Vis spectrophotometric method. Soil THC tests were determined on days 0, 14 and 28 respectively while THC tests on leaves of study plants were assessed on day 14 and 28. Results: The total hydrocarbon content values of the unpolluted soil (UPS) and the non-planted polluted soil (PS) subjected to this analysis on day zero were (UPS = 96.38 mg/kg; PS = 1082.80 mg/kg). However, results obtained on day 14 and 28 showed significant difference (P < 0.05) between the unpolluted soil sample (UPS) and all the planted polluted soil for Telfairia occidentalis (TOPB, TOPA), Allium cepa (ACPB, ACPA), Zea mays (ZMPB, ZMPA) as well as, the non-planted polluted soil (PS). For the leaf samples, TOPB had the highest THC value of 14.47mg/kg and 36.73 mg/kg for day 14 and 28 respectively while ZMPB had the lowest value of 5.38mg/kg at day 14 and ZMPA, the least THC value of 7.76mg/kg at day 28. Conclusion: Based on the varying THC levels observed in the leaves of crops used for this study; it was connoted that, bioaccumulation of hydrocarbons depends on the plants phytoremediation capability and the mode of pollution as observed in TOPB.

ABSTRACT

This study aims to evaluate, by micro-computed tomography, the filling capacity of two root canal dressings (RCD) - Bio-C Temp and Ultracal - after different activation protocols in teeth with simulated internal root resorption. Eighty single-rooted bovine teeth were sectioned in the cervical portion, standardizing the roots at 16 mm. Then, the canals were prepared by the apex-crown technique until instrument #80 using 2mL of 2.5% sodium hypochlorite solution at each instrument change. Afterward, the roots were sectioned longitudinally, and internal root resorptions were simulated using a diamond bur 1016 at 5 mm from the root apex. Hemiroots were joined and fixed with cyanoacrylate, scanned in micro-computed tomography (micro-CT) to assess total canal volume and simulated internal resorption, and then divided by stratified randomization into experimental groups according to RCD and method of activation (n = 10): Ultracal/Syringe; Ultracal/PUI, Ultracal/XP Endo Finisher, Ultracal Easy Clean, Bio-C Temp/Syringe, Bio-C Temp/PUI, Bio-C Temp/XP Endo Finisher and Bio-C/Easy Clean. Another scanning was performed to assess the volume of voids after RCD activation methods. The ANOVA and Tukey tests compared the activation methods. Student's T-test compared the RCDs within each activation method. Initial root canal volume values were similar for all groups (P > 0.05). There was no difference between activation protocols (P > 0.05). Higher volumes of void spaces were observed for Bio-C Temp compared to Ultracal after all activation methods (P < 0.05), except for Easy Clean (P > 0.05). Due to this, it can be concluded that the agitation methods tested for the Bio-C Temp and Ultracal pastes did not improve the filling of bovine teeth with simulated internal root resorption.

Introduction: The ingestion of food additives in processed foods can impact human health. Considering this, the clean label trend arises with healthier and more natural ingredients. Objective: To analyze the proportion of clean label products and the main additives present in industrialized foods, comparing them to their clean label analogues. Methods: A cross-sectional, descriptive study, in which the additives present in the ingredients lists of three categories of industrialized foods (meat-based hamburgers, yogurts and powders for gelatin) were compiled. The information was extracted from a database built in 2021, through collection in supermarkets in Belo Horizonte-MG. Results and Discussion: A final number of 157 products was reached: meat-based hamburgers (n=14), powders for gelatin (n=51) and yogurts (n=92). Only 16 products (10.2%) were considered clean label or similar. The category of powders for gelatin had the highest average of additives per product (7.3). The main additives found were: Sodium Tripolyphosphate (100%; n=12) in meat-based hamburgers, Potassium Sorbate (92%; n=77) in yogurts and Acesulfame Potassium (89%; n=40) in powders for gelatin. After surveying the most frequent additives, a discussion about their impact on health was held. Conclusion: The results indicated that most of the evaluated products have 5 or more additives in their composition and that the most frequent additives can have a negative effect on health, so the clean label food alternative can offer the same nutritional contribution without the risks inherent to the ingestion of chemical additives. ABSTRACT

Direct acid hydrolysis of Dioscorea zingiberensis rhizomes for preparation of diosgenin is wildly used in the traditional industry, which uses a large amount of inorganic acid catalysts, with high wastewater discharge and serious environmental pollution. Therefore, exploring clean and efficient preparation methods and processes has become an inevitable choice to realize the sustainable development of industrial production of diosgenin. Herein, the author reviewed and analyzed the research progress and problems of enzymatic hydrolysis, microbial transformation and modified acid hydrolysis in the preparation of diosgenin from D. zingiberensis rhizomes during the last ten years, and their application prospects are analyzed. Enzymatic hydrolysis has mild reaction conditions, but the yield of diosgenin is low, the economic cost is high, and the purification process of active enzyme is complicated. Microorganism shows specific activity to the substrate and high efficiency for diosgenin production, and microbial transformation is clean and environmentally friendly, but microbial transformation is time-consuming and the metabolic intermediates are complicated. For the modified acid hydrolysis, two-phase acid hydrolysis can reduce the amount of acid catalyst, and sulfonic acid-functionalized ionic liquid displays good recyclable performance by replacing the traditional inorganic acid, however, the wastewater discharge should still be considered. Solid acid catalysts are non-corrosive and easy to be recycled, but the need to use ethanol as the reaction solvent has certain safety hazards, and the catalyst preparation process is cumbersome. In conclusion, exploring clean and efficient conversion methods is an important research trend for preparation of diosgenin from D. zingiberensis rhizomes. For the enzymatic hydrolysis, the key glycoside hydrolases in the bioconversion process should be explored in depth, the conversion pathway of enzymatic saponins and enzyme specificity should be fully elucidated, and efforts should be made to improve the efficiency of enzymatic hydrolysis. For the microbial transformation, we should accelerate its industrial application process based on selecting and breeding efficient transformation strains, and optimizing stable transformation systems and processes, and in-depth investigation of the mechanism of microbial transformation, fully elucidating the specific key hydrolases and its catalytic properties, and striving to improve the efficiency of microbial transformation. For the modified acid hydrolysis, novel acid catalytic system with simple structure, stable performance and good biodegradability should be explored and applied, which can effectively solve the problems of environmental pollution and production safety.

ABSTRACT

@#Objective To establish CNC(controlled not classified)area microbial database of pharmaceutical enterprises, conduct correlation analysis with microbial distribution in clean area to achieve good microbial control in the clean area, especially in the core aseptic operation area, and improve the sterility assurance level of pharmaceutical enterprises.MethodsThe CNC area of a manufacturing workshop from pharmaceutical enterprise was selected as the research object, the airborne microbe, settling microbe, personal and environmental surface microorganisms were sampled one by one in the CNC area according to the route of personnel and materials entering the clean area. After the microorganisms were cultured and purified, the 16S rRNA sequencing method was used to identify the strains. Microbiomeanalyst online analysis software was used for data analysis.ResultsThe number of microorganisms in the CNC area of pharmaceutical enterprises was large and the species were rich. A total of 4 080 microorganisms were collected, which distributed in 47 genera. Gram-positive bacteria accounted for 84. 4%,mainly belonging to Staphylococcus,Micrococcus,Microbacterium. Gram-negative bacteria accounted for 15. 6%,and the distribution of Acinetobacter was much higher than other gram-negative bacteria. The Alpha diversity index was used to characterize the richness of microbial populations. The richness of microbial populations of airborne microbe and settling microbe was the highest, followed by environmental surface microorganisms, and the microbial population richness of personnel surface microorganism was the lowest. The number of microorganisms in the personnel's hood and chest was relatively small, and the number of microorganisms in the personnel's soles of feet and hands was relatively large. There were relatively few types of microorganisms on the surface of personnel, and staphylococcus showed an absolute advantage. The microbial distribution in CNC area was correlated with the microbial distribution in Class B and C clean areas of the same production workshop. Most of the microorganisms collected in Class B and C clean areas were included in the microbial population in CNC area. Class B and C clean areas were similar to CNC area, both of which were dominated by Staphylococcus and Micrococcus. The distribution proportion of Acinetobacter in Class B and C clean areas decreased compared with that in CNC area.ConclusionThe CNC area microbial database of the pharmaceutical enterprises has been established and the microbial population that is easy to enter the clean area has been determined, providing reliable technical support for the good microorganism control in the clean area

ABSTRACT

Recent research in epidemiological modelling reveals that air pollution affects child health in various ways resulting in low birthweight, stillbirth, preterm birth, developmental delay, growth failure, poor respiratory and cardiovascular health, and a higher risk of anemia. India has embarked on the national clean air program, but a much stronger coordinated multi-sectoral approach is required to minimize the child health burden caused by air pollution. Air pollution should be treated as a public health crisis that can only be managed with policy backed by science, gradual transition to clean energy use, emission reduction supported by clean air technologies, long-term commitment from the Government, and cooperation of the citizens.

ABSTRACT

Objective@#The use of antimicrobial prophylaxis to prevent surgical site infections (SSI) is well established. This study examined the association of adherence to antimicrobial prophylaxis for clean neurosurgeries with post-operative surgical site infection (SSI) rates. @*Methods@#A retrospective descriptive study was conducted at the Philippine General Hospital (PGH) among pediatric patients who underwent clean neurosurgical procedures between January 1, 2018 – December 31, 2019. The outcome measured was the development of SSI. Univariate and multivariate analysis was performed to show the association of risk factors with SSI. Compliance to existing antibiotic prophylaxis recommendation was assessed.@*Results@#One hundred eighty-nine (189) medical charts were reviewed. Overall prevalence of SSI was 9.5% and fever was the most common initial symptom of SSI. Staphylococcus species was identified from cultures of surgical sites, consistent with existing literature, however gram-negative organisms including multidrug-resistant organisms (MDRO) were noted. All cases received prophylactic antibiotics, but adherence to all parameters (antimicrobial choice, dose, timing, route, re-dosing and duration of prophylaxis) was low at 7.9%. Appropriate antibiotics were prescribed in only 15.9% and antibiotics were discontinued beyond 24 hours post-surgery in 45.5% of cases. Patients who received a regimen fully compliant with antimicrobial prophylaxis recommendations did not develop SSI. @*Conclusion@#Adherence to existing antimicrobial prophylaxis protocol for neurosurgeries is low at 7.9%. Patients who received a regimen fully compliant with the recommendations did not develop SSI. Interventions to improve compliance to antimicrobial prophylaxis guidelines are needed.

Abstract OBJECTIVE: Case report of the effect of posterior tibial nerve stimulation on postpartum urinary retention. CASE REPORT: Case 1: 41-year-old patient, with two previous cesarean sections, overweight (BMI 28 kg/m2), 33 weeks of pregnancy, chronic arterial hypertension and over-aggregated preeclampsia associated with data of neurological deficit. In the late puerperium she had difficulty urinating and suprapubic pain. Based on urodynamics, detrusor-sphincter dyssynergia was diagnosed and she was treated with posterior tibial nerve stimulation for 20 minutes every week with phase duration 200 µs and frequency 10 Hz during 12 sessions. Urodynamic parameters improved and spontaneous micturition was restored, the frequency of intermittent clean catheterization was reduced, and the effect continued at 31 months follow-up. Case 2: 38-year-old primigravida patient, BMI 21 kg/m2, with a history of subclinical hypothyroidism. Five days postpartum she had urinary retention of 2000 mL; a Foley catheter was placed for continuous drainage and, subsequently, a plug with emptying every 2 hours. Notwithstanding the above, she had new episodes of urinary retention that warranted the initiation of intermittent clean catheterization, 5 in 24 hours and stimulation of the posterior tibial nerve with asymmetric biphasic current, she had a subjective improvement of 100% and urodynamic changes. Spontaneous urination resumed without requiring intermittent clean catheterization, she was discharged after one year of follow-up. CONCLUSION: According to the study outcomes, posterior tibial nerve stimulation could offer a promising treatment alternative in patients with postpartum urinary retention.

ABSTRACT

Background: Catheter associated complications are very common in the emergency departments of medicine, general surgery, orthopaedics and in community. They mostly occur in patients with neurological afflictions because of inexperience of the first handlers as they lack the insight of altered physiology and anatomy in the lower urinary tract because of neurological lesions and also because of an inadequate advice at the time of discharge regarding the catheter care. Objectives of this study were to find the prevalence of per-urethral catheter associated injuries in patients with neurological lesions in a tertiary care centre of south-eastern Punjab and their prevention in completely recoverable neurological afflictions. Methods: This is a cross-sectional observational study conducted in urology department from 1st August 2017-31st August 2018. The data was taken from medicine, general surgery and orthopedic emergency departments. A total of 82 patients were taken from 19-78 years and 49 patients had per-urethral catheter placement. Analysis was done using Statistical Program of Special Sciences, version 20.Results: It was observed that overall neurological lesions are more common in males (80.48%) as compared to females (19.51%) and distributed over an age range of 19-84 years in both sexes. Out of total patients, 59.75% required per urethral catheterization. The prevalence of per-urethral catheter associated complications was 20.40%.Conclusions: Insertion of per-urethral catheter is a simple procedure but an error of omission on the part of health professionals’ results in a serious complication in a neurological patient. Proper insertion technique and catheter care are to be followed to prevent avoidable complications in this subset of patients.

ABSTRACT

Background: Surgical wound infection is one of the most commonly occurring complications and its incidence has been lowest in clean surgical cases. Prophylactic antibiotics are routinely used in all surgical cases. But this is not indicated in clean surgical cases. Due to undue fear of infections, many practicing surgeons use antibiotics in clean surgical cases. Misuse of antimicrobials leads to drug toxicity, super infections, high health care cost and colonization of wards by highly resistant microbes. Objective of the study is to compare the frequencies of wound site infections in patients undergoing clean elective general surgery operations with no antibiotics and single dose prophylactic antibiotics. Methods: A comparative study of 100 patients undergoing elective clean surgeries at Victoria Hospital from November 2012 to October 2014 was undertaken. Data was collected by history taking, clinical examination, hematological and microbiological investigations and follow up.Results: Two cases in each group had post-operative infections noticed on the day 2 wound examination. All the four cases had culture positive with isolates being S. aureus in three and E. coli in single case. Conclusions: Post-operative wound infections noted in two cases in both the groups do not have any clinical and statistical significance; hence single dose of prophylactic antibiotics is not required in all the clean surgical cases. A simple size of large number is required in this area of research to conclude with statistical significance.

ABSTRACT

Abstract The loss of food along the supply chain has become a topic of great interest in the world, because this affect to the food security of society. One of these stages in the food distribution chain are the local supply centers, where important quantities of food are often lost, especially due to the lack of post-harvest protocols. The objective of this study was to analyze the loss of food in the supply center of the municipalities of Acacias, Colombia and evaluate the composting system as an alternative for environmental management. It was carried out by means of the quartering method the estimation of the quantity and type of residues lost, and subsequently, the composting process, where the quality of the product is evaluated. In conclusion, organic residues is an environmental problem that requires alternatives such as composting, which allows to reduce the amount and take advantage of the nutritional content of organic matter, generating by-products with high added value.

ABSTRACT

Background: Surgical Site Infection (SSI) is the 3rd most commonly reported infection accounting for 14-16% of all Health care associated infections among hospitalized patients. Surgical Site Infections are responsible for an increased economic burden to healthcare systems, including additional postoperative hospital stay and costs. The present study was conducted in a tertiary care hospital to study the incidence, risk factors and associated pathogens of Surgical Site Infection. Methods: A total of 100 patients operated of clean and clean-contaminated surgeries from Orthopaedics, Surgery and Obstetrics and Gynaecology Department of AVBRH, Sawangi were included. Results: Overall infection rate was 6%. Patients in the age of above 71 years showed maximum rate of infection (14.28%) followed by 61 to 70 years (10%) and 51-60 years (10%). Surgical site infection rate was 4.65% (2/43) in clean operative wounds and 7.02% (4/57) in clean contaminated operative wounds. Escherichia coli and Klebsiella pneumonia were the most common organisms causing SSI. None of the risk factor was found significantly associated with the development of SSI.Conclusions: This study gave a better understanding of microbial pathogens of our institute which may have epidemiological and therapeutic implications. It will act as a pilot study to conduct further such larger research.
