ABSTRACT

@#Introduction: Nursing is a theory-practice course that requires high-quality and effective clinical education experiences. Clinical placement is one of the most important parts of nursing education; that can be challenging, stressful, and causes unpredictable changes. However, studies describing the challenges during clinical placement faced by nursing students are scarce. This study aimed to explore the challenges of Malaysian nursing students during a clinical placement at hospitals. Methods: A phenomenology qualitative study was conducted among nursing students at a public university in Malaysia. A semi-structured interview was used to collect data from October 2020 until November 2020. All interviews were recorded, transcribed, and analysed using thematic analysis. Results: Five themes emerged from this study: 1) attitude of the nurse, 2) patient’s distrust, 3) student’s issues, 4) learning environment, and 5) theory-practice gaps. Conclusion: This study revealed that nursing students face many challenges during their clinical postings. Therefore, various methods could be applied to increase the quality of practical sessions. Additionally, further research is needed to assess the coping strategies used by nursing students in dealing with the challenges during their clinical placement and the effectiveness of the interventions taken by the authority in helping the students.

ABSTRACT

@#Due to restrictions brought by the COVID-19 pandemic, occupational therapy (OT) programs in the Philippines postponed face-to-face internship indefinitely. While guidelines encourage the use of the different alternative strategies in emergency remote learning, many Filipino clinical supervisors are apprehensive about online internship to prepare interns for clinical practice. In response to the growing concerns regarding online internship, an online forum was organized and attended by 23 clinical supervisors who shared their experiences and reflections. The online forum included sharing of speakers from major practice settings, breakout sessions, and sharing of insights from the breakout sessions. Qualitative data were collected and analyzed. Four themes emerged: issues and challenges in using telehealth as part of OT internship; maximizing technology in OT internship; re-envisioning competencies of students and internship supervisors towards the quality of client care, and; potentialities for the future of OT internship. Components of online internship will stay and must be further developed even after the pandemic. Through the forum, clinical supervisors can achieve collective goals in order to effectively educate OT interns amid unprecedented times.

ABSTRACT

@#PURPOSE: Mentoring is an essential variable in the learning process of student nurses. This study aimed to identify effective mentoring practices in the clinical placement of student nurses. DESIGN AND METHODS: Systematic review and meta-analysis were conducted. The main databases used were PubMed, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, JBI Database of Systematic Reviews and Implementation Reports, CINAHL, and Medline. The risk of bias was assessed utilizing the JBI appraisal tool. The data were summarized and statistically analyzed using the Comprehensive Meta-Analysis version 3.0 software. RESULTS: Out of 17,946 records screened, six studies met the inclusion criteria. Peer and nurse-led mentoring practices were reported to have positive outcomes in the students' clinical placement. Meta-analysis revealed a statistically significant effect of mentoring in the students' clinical placement (SMD 0.357, 95% CI 0.038, 0.677, I2 = 69.26%, p = 0.028). A subgroup analysis resulted in a statistically significant effect of mentoring by nurses and peers in the improvement of students' knowledge and skills (SMD = 0.426, 95% CI, 0.202, 0.650, I2 = 0%, p = 0.000). CONCLUSIONS: Mentoring can positively influence the interaction between a conducive clinical learning environment and positive learning outcomes. Specifically, this meta-analysis suggests that student nurses can benefit from peer and nurse-led mentoring in improving knowledge and skills. It is suggested that effective mentoring practices be utilized to inform the development of a student mentoring program.
