ABSTRACT

@#Biliary cystic tumors (BCT), which include the subgroups biliary cystadenoma (BCA) and biliary cystadenocarcinoma (BCAC), affect 5 to 10% of the global population. BCTs are solitary, multiloculated cysts that are usually intrahepatic in location. BCACs are rare tumors that arise from the malignant transformation of BCA. The presentation of BCT often mimics simple hepatic cysts and other hepatic cystic lesions making diagnosis difficult. With the recent advances in medical imaging, BCTs have been diagnosed more often. Patients with BCT are often asymptomatic. When symptoms are present, however, patients usually manifest with abdominal pain and distention. Given the high risk of recurrence, complete surgical resection by formal hepatic resection or enucleation is the best treatment of choice for patients. We present a case of a 65-year-old female who came in due to a four-year history of an enlarging abdomen. She was initially treated, preoperatively, as a case of ovarian new growth but was later managed as hepatic cystadenocarcinoma.

ABSTRACT

Benign Multicystic Peritoneal Mesothelioma (BMPM) is a very rare condition of unknown pathogenesis, that occurs mainly in women in their reproductive age (5:1 female/male ratio). The pathogenesis of BMPM is unclear and doubts regarding its neoplastic and reactive nature exist. Furthermore, the differential diagnosis with other diseases remains uncertain. In most cases the diagnosis is accidental, during a laparotomy performed for other reasons, since the diagnostic imaging does not allow a definite diagnosis preoperatively. Radical surgical resection is the “gold standard” for treatment of BMPM, despite a high rate of recurrence (about 50%). We report on a case of a 30-year-old pregnant woman with multilocular omental cystic mass, 36 x 22 cm in size, underwent elective caesarean section at term of pregnancy. The definitive histologic diagnosis was benign multicystic mesothelioma of the omentum. BMPM detected in pregnancy or during cesarean delivery is very rare; in fact only three other cases have been reported. Particularly, we present the only case, described in the literature, of a young female with benign multicystic omental mesothelioma in pregnancy that was treated solely by surgery, without recurrence after three years follow-up. In this article we also describe diagnostic evaluation, treatment, prognosis of this rare disease as the possible positive effects of adjuvants medical treatments.

ABSTRACT

Liposarcoma is the most common soft tissue sarcoma in adults and accounts for 9.8% to 16% in all soft tissue sarcomas. The common sites include limbs, buttocks, and retroperitoneum, et al. The early diagnosis of retroperitoneal liposarcoma may be difficult because of due to the late onset of symptoms and the tumors are frequently noted in a large size with the involvement of adjacent structures. Surgical therapy remains the most effective modality for the treatment of retroperitoneal liposarcoma. But, complete surgical resection of these tumors is often challenging and, at times, may be impossible. So, adjuvant radiation therapy is necessary for the improvement of prognosis in many cases. We report a case of retroperitoneal liposarcoma which was treated with complete surgical resection followed by adjuvant radiation therapy.

ABSTRACT

The fibromatosis (desmoid tumor) is histologically benign fibrous neoplasm arising from the musculoaponeurotic structures through out the body, but that shows locally aggressive growth. Common anatomic sites includes the limbs, trunk and mesentery. Fibromatoses arising in the neck have been reported rarely. If the tumors are occurred in the neck, complete resection is often difficult, because of its locally infiltrative nature. Therefore radiotherapy, chemotherapy and hormonal therapy are occasionally needed to reduce local recurrence. We report herein a case of fibromatosis arising in the left supraclavicular region with infiltration to surrounding tissues, which was successfully treated by complete surgical excision and postoperative adjuvant radiotherapy.
