ABSTRACT

Silicosis is an occupational disease reported in silica, stone & mining industry. No proper report on workers in industries using silica in stones and coal has been done from Chhattisgarh till date. Detailed history, lung functions and chest x-ray were done. Diagnosis was made on the basis of radiology & history. Data analysis was done with the help of the statistical package for social sciences software. The Chi-square test was used for determining the relationship between qualitative data and descriptive statistics was used where required. Out of the total 16 reported cases, 13 had respiratory symptoms. Radiological abnormalities were noted in all. Lung functions revealed obstruction in 25%, restriction in 12.5 %, while mixed ventilatory defects in 62.5% subjects. 16 cases of silicosis and silicotuberculosis were reported. They had high respiratory morbidity (81.25%), cough and dyspnea being predominant symptoms. Duration of exposure correlates with radiological findings and increased incidence of silicosis

ABSTRACT

Cholestasis results from impairment in the excretion of bile, which may be due to mechanical obstruction of bile flow or impairment of excretion of bile components into the bile canaliculus. When present, cholestasis warrants prompt diagnosis and treatment. The differential diagnosis of cholestasis beyond the neonatal period is broad and includes congenital and acquired etiologies. It is imperative that the clinician differentiates between intrahepatic and extrahepatic origin of cholestasis. Treatment may be supportive or curative and depends on the etiology. Recent literature shows that optimal nutritional and medical support also plays an integral role in the management of pediatric patients with chronic cholestasis. This review will provide a broad overview of the pathophysiology, diagnostic approach, and management of cholestasis beyond the neonatal and infancy periods.

ABSTRACT

Cholestatic jaundice represents serious pathological condition. Septic-cholestasis is a kind of hepato-cellular cholestasis that occured during or after sepsis caused by biliary flow obstruction. This is a cohort study from February to June 2007 on neonatal sepsis patients at Neonatology ward Department of Child Health Faculty of Medicine University of Indonesia-Cipto Mangunkusumo General National Hospital. Aim of this study is to find out the incidence of intrahepatic cholestasis in neonatal sepsis, associated risk factors, and mortality rate in neonatal cholestasis-sepsis. From 138 neonatal sepsis patients, the incidence of intrahepatic cholestasis is 65.9%. None of the risk factors tested in this study showed statistically significant result. Mortality rate of neonatal cholestasis-sepsis is 52.8%.
