ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: To explore the association of workplace loneliness, job burnout and conscientiousness in teachers of special education. METHODS: A total of 344 teachers of special education from Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region were selected as study subjects by judgment sampling method. The questionnaires of Workplace Loneliness Scale, Maslach Burnout Inventory and Conscientiousness Scale of Big Five Inventory were used to conduct the survey. The mediating role of job burnout in workplace loneliness and conscientiousness was analyzed. RESULTS: The total score of workplace loneliness was 32.6±8.3. The median total score of job burnout and conscientiousness was 31.0 and 30.6 respectively. Partial correlation analysis showed that the dimensions of job burnout were positively correlated with the total score of workplace loneliness and all its dimension scores, and negatively correlated with conscientiousness score(P<0.01). The degree of explanation for the change of workplace loneliness and job burnout on conscientiousness were 9.0% and 17.0% respectively. CONCLUSION: Job burnout plays a partial mediating role in workplace loneliness and conscientiousness in teachers of special education. Reducing workplace loneliness and job burnout can help improve the conscientiousness of teachers of special education.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: Empathy is important in the education of medical students. Many psychosocial variables are related to empathy. The aim of the study was to investigate the relationship between empathy and psychosocial factors such as burnout, personality, self-esteem, and resilience. METHODS: The participants completed a set of self-reporting questionnaires, including questions related to socio-demographic characteristics, the Korean edition of the Jefferson Scale of Empathy, student version (JSE-S-K), Maslach Burnout Inventory General Survey (MBI-GS), NEO Five-Factor Inventory (NEO-FFI), Rosenberg Self-esteem Scale (R-SES), and Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale (CD-RISC). Partial correlation and regression analyses were performed. RESULTS: In male students, there were positive correlations between JSE-S-K and R-SES (r=0.229, p=0.002); conscientiousness of the NEO-FFI (r=0.153, p=0.037) and negative correlations, specifically between JSE-S-K and depersonalization of MBI (r=-0.206, p=0.005). In female students, there was positive correlations between JSE-S-K and personal accomplishment of MBI (r=0.384, p=0.004). In the multiple regression model, the JSE-S-K was affected by conscientiousness of the NEO-FFI (adjusted R² =0.245, β=0.201, p=0.001); depersonalization, personal accomplishment of the MBI-GS (β=-0.188, p=0.001, β=0.143, p=0.017); R-SES (β=0.176, p=0.004); sex (β=0.117, p=0.029). CONCLUSION: The present findings suggested that conscientiousness, depersonalization, personal accomplishment, self-esteem and sex have an influence on empathy. Therefore, these must be considered in medical education and can be helpful to nurture more empathetic doctors.

ABSTRACT

Description of the case of a female patient that presented non-specific initial signs and symptoms, with altered mental status, suggestive signs of neuro-vascular syndrome, and compromise of posterior circulation. Possible intoxication with amitraz or benzodiazepines was considered due to personal history and family reports. Given the chameleonic nature of the symptoms of cerebrovascular accidents and stroke mimics, this clinical case exposes the importance of a comprehensive approach and evaluation of possible differential diagnoses of neurological diseases.

ABSTRACT

The aim of this study was to review the Conscientiousness dimension of the Dimensional Clinical Inventory (DCPI). The study was divided into six stages, from literature review and selection of relevant constructs, to the operationalization of the constructs and final selection of new items for application. For the dimension review, we considered the proposal (section 3) for the fifth edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5) and the Personality Inventory for DSM-5 (PID-5), the SWAP model and model of Anna Clark. Based on this, as a result, a new set of 34 items was established as a final step. Future studies should seek to investigate the psychometric properties of the revised dimension, expecting higher reliability indices for internal consistency and more pathological items compared to the original dimension.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Although there are many studies linking the religious context with fisical and mental health, there is little research on the interface between religiousness/spirituality and personality. OBJECTIVES: The main goal was to review the empirical research on the relationship between religiosity, spirituality and personality. METHODS: A survey of the academic production through virtual databases: PubMed and PsychInfo, published until January of 2008 and using the combinations: "personality and spiritu*" and "personality and religio*" was conducted, in addition to articles presented in a meta-analysis about the subject. RESULTS: High Religiousness is associated with low Psychoticism and high Agreeableness and Conscientiousness. Conscientiousness in adolescents can be a significant predictor for the higher religiosity in the early adulthood. And the dimension of Religiosity seems to be a potentially candidate to be beyond the Big Five. DISCUSSION: The belief in a dimension of Religiosity, in a transcendent reality or in a personal God, in some cases, does not seem to show associations between any of the five factors of personality. This can indicate that the R/E is a potential sixth factor of personality that is not present in the current models of personality.
