ABSTRACT

@#The manual cutting is still applied in the Small and Medium Industries (SMI) especially in cutting the Cyperaceae plant. One of the varieties is “Fimbristylis Globulosa (Mendong)”. This plant is used as a raw material to manufacture the handicraft. The process is commenced with chopping the plant by using a manual tool. However, the existing tool still causes some complains where 90% of users experienced discomfort and unsafe in the use. The tool is also not effective and efficient for cutting. Thus, it is significant to improve the better cutting tools. This objective of this study is to design the innovative and ergonomic cutting tools for satisfying user requirements. The survey was done to identify some discomfort. The participatory ergonomic method is applied to determine the specification of design on basis anthropometry data of users. Non-parametric statistical analysis is conducted to test the hypothesis. The results of this study show that the developed design is a valid to reduce the risk of work-related musculoskeletal disorders and more comfort and safer at 5% of the significant levels where the proposed design specification used electric motor system and pneumatic system.

ABSTRACT

Objective: To study the chemical constituents of the rhizomes of Schoenoplectus tabernaemontani. Methods: Compounds were isolated and purified by a combination of column chromatography including silica gel, polyamide and Sephadex LH-20. Their structures were elucidated by physiochemical properties and NMR analysis. Results: Twelve compounds were obtained from water extract of the rhizome of S. tabernaemontani and identified as 5,7,2',4'-tetrahydroxy-3, 5'-dimethoxyflavone (1), tricin (2), hesperetin (3), quercetin (4), luteolin (5), eriodictyol (6), apigenin (7), naringenin (8), chrysin (9), 5,7-dihydroxychromone (10), catechin (11) and tricin-7-O-β-D-glucoside (12), respectively. Conclusion: Compound 1 is a new flavone named schoenin. Compounds 2-5 and 7-12 are isolated from the Cyperaceae for the first time. Compound 6 is isolated from the genus Scirpus for the first time.

ABSTRACT

Abstract The sedge-feeding moth Bactra verutana Zeller, 1875 (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae: Olethreutinae: Bactrini), described from Dallas, Texas, USA, is widespread, recorded throughout much North America, Central and South America, including the Caribbean, and Africa. The species is recorded for the first time from Chile based on specimens collected in the coastal valleys of the Atacama Desert, where its larvae feed on Cyperus corymbosus Rottb. var. subnodosus (Nees & Meyen) Kük. (Cyperaceae). A single DNA barcode haplotype, which is widespread in USA, was found in two Chilean specimens sequenced.

ABSTRACT Cyperus rotundus L. (Suada, Sueda, family: Cyperaceae) is vastly spread in several world's subtropical and tropical regions. It had variable traditional uses and bioactivities. A new flavonol derivative: cyperaflavoside (myricetin 3,3',5'-trimethyl ether 7-O-β-D-glucopyranoside) and five flavonoids: vitexin, orientin, cinaroside, quercetin 3-O-β-D-glucopyranoside, and myrcetin 3-O-β-D-glucopyranoside were separated from the methanolic extract of C. rotundus aerial parts. Their structures were verified based on UV, IR, NMR (1D and 2D), HRESIMS, and comparison with literature. All metabolites were assessed for their 5-lipoxygenase inhibitory potential. All compounds possessed 5-lipoxygenase inhibitory potentials with IC50s 5.1, 4.5, 5.9, 4.0, 3.7, and 2.3 µM, respectively, in comparison to indomethacin (IC50 0.98 µM). These results supported the traditional uses of C. rotundus in treating inflammation and its related symptoms.

ABSTRACT

Essential oils hydrodistilled from the rhizomes of Cyperus papyrus L. growing wild in two localities (KwaDlangezwa and Richard’s Bay) of uMhlathuze City, KwaZulu-Natal Province, South Africa has been studied. The major components of KwaDlangezwa oil were caryophyllene oxide (12.7 percent), cyperene (10.2 percent) and 1,8-cineole (8.4 percent). The oil of Richard’s Bay comprised mainly of caryophyllene oxide (24.4 percent), humulene epoxide II (13.2 percent), aristolene (9.1 percent) and aromadendrene epoxide II (7.3 percent). The antibacterial activity of the oils was assayed using agar-disc diffusion and broth-microdilution methods. The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) revealed that the oil samples inhibited the growth of Staphylococcus aureus (ATCC 3983 and ATCC 6538), with MIC of 1.25 and 0.31 mg/mL for each oil. Streptococcus faecalis (ATCC 29212; MIC of 1.25 and 0.6 mg/mL, respectively) and Escherichia coli (ATCC 4983; MIC of 1.25 mg/mL for both oils). Only the Richard Bay oil showed activity against Bacillus cereus and Bacillus pumilus with MIC of 1.25mg/mL, respectively.


Los aceites esenciales hidrodestilados de los rizomas de Cyperus papyrus L., que crecen en dos localidades (KwaDlangezwa y Bahía Richard) de la ciudad de uMhlathuze, la provincia KwaZulu-Natal, de Sudafrica han sido estudiados. Los mayores componentes del aceite de KwaDlangezwa fueron óxido de cariofileno (12,7 por ciento), cipereno (10,2 por ciento) y 1,8-cineol (8,4 por ciento). El aceite de la bahía de Richard consistió principalmente cariofileno (24,4 por ciento), epóxido II de humuleno (13,2 por ciento), aristoleno (9,1 por ciento) y epóxido II de aromandreno (7,3 por ciento). La actividad antibacterial de los aceites fueron ensayados utilizando la difusión en discos de agar y el método de microdilución en caldo. La concentración mínima inhibitoria (CMI) reveló que las muestras inhibieron el crecimiento de Staphylococcus aureus (ATCC 3983 y ATCC 6538), con una MIC de 1,25 y 0,31 mg/ml de cada aceite. Streptococcus faecalis (ATCC 29212; CMI de 1,25 y 0.6 mg/mL, respectivamente) y Escherichia coli (ATCC 4983; CMI de 1,25 mg/mL para ambos aceites). Solo el aceite de la bahía Richard mostró actividad contra Bacillus cereus y Bacillus pumilis con CMI de 1,25 mg/mL, respectivamente.

ABSTRACT

The rhizomatous Cyperus giganteus, abundant in the Pantanal wetland, can dominate extense floodable areas as monodominant communities. The Jacadigo lake has a large area of C. giganteus, where we performed an evaluation on community structure during two months in 2010, before it was hit by a wildfire which top-killed the vegetation, compared to ten months post-fire. We utilized 40 plots of 1m × 1m, along permanent trails, assessing two strata: the upper, near the inflorescence of adult plants, and the lower, close to the water level. Our results show that fire does not affect dominance of C. giganteus, as it maintained the same cover as before fire; species richness is not much altered either - 28 before fire and 34 thereafter. Fire changed the floristic composition, due to the annual variation of species and the ability of some plants to colonize gaps and to regrow after fire from underground organs and seeds. The stratification of the vegetation with characteristic species of upper and lower strata was similar after fire.


A planta rizomatosa Cyperus giganteus, encontrada no Pantanal, pode dominar extensas áreas inundáveis, formando uma comunidade monodominante chamada localmente de pirizal. A lagoa do Jacadigo, situada na sub-região de Nabileque, possui uma extensa área de pirizal onde foi realizada uma avaliação na estrutura da vegetação durante dois meses no período de 2010, antes de ser atingida por um incêndio que causou perda da cobertura aérea da vegetação e foi comparada com 10 meses de avaliação pós-fogo. Com indicações na literatura de que o rizoma da planta pode favorecer a espécie através de rebrotamento após um incêndio, o objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar as variações na estrutura da vegetação de pirizal após um evento de fogo. Foram utilizadas 40 parcelas não fixas de 1m × 1m e alocadas sistematicamente através de trilhas avaliando dois estratos: o superior, próximo a inflorescência dos adultos e o inferior, próximo a lâmina d’água. Nos dois meses logo após o fogo, devido ao tamanho reduzido nos indivíduos de C. giganteus foi avaliado apenas um estrato denominado total. Os resultados mostram que o fogo não afeta a dominância de C. giganteus, que se mantém na mesma faixa de cobertura do período anterior ao fogo; a riqueza de espécies não é alterada, 28 no período anterior ao fogo e 34 no período posterior. Após o incêndio, a estrutura da comunidade sofre alteração na composição florística, devido a mudança anual de espécies e a capacidade que certas plantas possuem em colonizar clareiras e rebrotar após o fogo por meio de órgãos subterrâneos e sementes. A estratificação da vegetação com espécies características de estrato superior e inferior se manteve após o fogo, porém com diferença menos acentuada entre as espécies.

Introduction: species of the family Cyperaceae are commonly used by the population to treat gastric disorders.However, there are a few ethnopharmacological studies about this family Lagenocarpus rigidus (Kunth) Ness, Cyperaceae, is one of the most widespread swamp species. Objective: evaluate the gastric activity of L. rigidus and its chemical characterization. Methods: ethanolic extract of L. rigidus (ELR) leaves prepared by percolation was subjected to total polyphenol and flavonoid quantification, as well as HPLC quantification of some flavonoids. Angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) inhibition was determined by colorimetric assays.The gastric effects of ELR were tested in male Wistar rats (n = 6 each group) treated with different doses (600, 60 and 6 mg/kg i.p.) ELR.Gastric lesions were induced by administration of indomethacin (30 mg/kg s.c.).The number of ulcers and the index of mucosal damage (IMD) were determined taking into account the color, edema and bleeding of gastric lesions, the number of petechiae, and the number and size of the ulcers. Statistical analysis of data was performed with one-way ANOVA followed by Tukey's test; significance was p < 0.05. Results: ELR inhibited the ACE (68.5±18.1%) at a concentration of 100 mg/mL.Oral administration of ELR (6, 60 and 600 mg/kg) showed protective activity against indomethacin-induced gastric injury. Total polyphenols in ELR were 157.7 ± 5.8 mg pirogalol/mg equivalent flavonoids and 66.9 ± 3.1 µg equivalent quercetin/mg. Conclusion: L. rigidus protects against acute gastric damage induced by indomethacin in an independent dose manner.


Introducción: las especies de la familia Cyperaceae popularmente se utilizan para tratar trastornos gástricos. Sin embargo, hay pocos estudios etnofarmacológicos sobre esta familia. Lagenocarpus rigidus (Kunth) Ness, Cyperaceae, es una de las especies más grandes de población en pantano. Objetivo: evaluar la actividad gástrica de L. rigidus, junto a su caracterización química. Métodos: el extracto etanólico de hojas de L. rigidus (ELR), preparado por percolación fue objeto de cuantificación de polifenoles y flavonoides totales, cuantificación por HPLC de algunos flavonoides. La inhibición de la enzima convertidora de angiotensina (ECA) se realizó por ensayos colorimétricos. Los efectos gástricos de ELR se llevó a cabo en ratas Wistar macho (n = 6, cada grupo), el tratamiento con diferentes dosis (600, 60 y 6 mg/kg ip) de ELR. Las lesiones gástricas se indujeron mediante la administración de indometacina (30 mg/kg sc). El número de úlceras y signos de puntuación del índice de lesión de las mucosas (IMD) se evaluó teniendo en cuenta el color, edema y hemorragia de las lesiones gástricas, el número de petequias, y el número y tamaño de las úlceras. El análisis estadístico de los datos se realizó mediante ANOVA 1 vía, seguido por el test de Tukey y significación fue de p < 0,05. Resultados: ELR inhiben la ACE (68,5 ± 18,1 %) a una concentración de 100 mg/mL. La administración oral de ELR (6, 60 y 600 mg/kg) mostró un efecto protector gástrico contra inducido por indometacina. Los polifenoles totales de ELR fue 157,7 ± 5,8 mg equivalente de pirogalol/mg de flavonoides y 66,9 ± 3,1 μg equivalentes de quercetina/mg. Conclusiones: L. rigidus protege contra el daño gástrico agudo inducido por la indometacina en una organización independiente de la dosis.

ABSTRACT

In 1820, French naturalist August Saint Hillaire, during a visit in Espírito Santo (ES), a state in southeastern Brazil, reported a popular use of Cyperaceae species as antidote to snake bites. The plant may even have a hypotensive effect, though it was never properly researched. The in vitro inhibitory of the angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) activity of eigth ethanolic extracts of Cyperaceae was evaluated by colorimetric assay. Total phenolic and flavonoids were determined using colorimetric assay. The hypotensive effect of the active specie (Rhychonospora exaltata, ERE) and the in vivo ACE assay was measured in vivo using male Wistar Kyoto (ERE, 0.01-100mg/kg), with acetylcholine (ACh) as positive control (5 µg/kg, i.v.). The evaluation of ACE in vivo inhibitory effect was performed comparing the mean arterial pressure before and after ERE (10 mg/kg) in animals which received injection of angiotensin I (ANG I; 0,03, 03 and 300 µg/kg, i.v.). Captopril (30 mg/kg) was used as positive control. Bulbostylis capillaris (86.89 ± 15.20%) and ERE (74.89 ± 11.95%, ERE) were considered active in the in vitro ACE inhibition assay, at 100 µg/mL concentration. ACh lead to a hypotensive effect before and after ERE's curve (-40±5% and -41±3%). ERE showed a dose-dependent hypotensive effect and a in vivo ACE inhibitory effect. Cyperaceae species showed an inhibitory activity of ACE, in vitro, as well as high content of total phenolic and flavonoids. ERE exhibited an inhibitory effect on both in vitro and in vivo ACE. The selection of species used in popular medicine as antidotes, along with the in vitro assay of ACE inhibition, might be a biomonitoring method for the screening of new medicinal plants with hypotensive properties.


Em 1820, o naturalista francês August Saint Hillaire, durante uma visita ao Espírito Santo (ES), Estado do sudeste do Brasil, relatou o uso popular de espécies de Cyperaceae como antídoto para picadas de cobra. As espécies podem possuir efeito hipotensor, embora nunca tenham sido devidamente pesquisadas. A inibição in vitro da atividade da enzima conversora da angiotensina (ECA) de oito extratos etanólicos de Cyperaceae foi avaliada por ensaio colorimétrico. Totais de fenólicos e flavonóides foram determinados utilizando ensaio colorimétrico. O efeito hipotensor da espécie ativa (Rhychonospora exaltata, ERE) no ensaio de ECA in vitro foi avaliada in vivo utilizando-se machos Wistar Kyoto (ERE, 0.01-100 mg/kg), com a acetilcolina (ACh), como controle positivo (5 µg/kg, iv). A avaliação do efeito inibidor da ECA in vivo foi realizado comparando-se a pressão arterial média, antes e após ERE (10 mg/kg) nos animais que receberam injeção de angiotensina I (Ang I, 0,03, 03 e 300 µg/kg, iv). Captopril (30 mg/kg) foi utilizado como controle positivo. Bulbostylis capillaris (86,89±15,20%) e ERE (74,89±11,95%, ERE) foram considerados ativas no ensaio de inibição da ECA in vitro, na concentração de 100 µg/mL. A ACh gerou um efeito hipotensor, antes e depois da curva de ERE (-40 ± 5% -41 ± 3%). ERE apresentou efeito hipotensivo dependente da dose e um efeito inibidor da ECA in vivo. As espécies de Cyperaceae mostraram uma atividade inibidora de ACE in vitro, bem como elevado conteúdo de substâncias fenólicas e flavonóides. ERE exibiu um efeito inibidor da ECA tanto in vitro como in vivo. A seleção das espécies utilizadas na medicina popular como antiofídicos, juntamente com o ensaio in vitro de inibição da ECA, pode ser um método de biomonitoramento para a seleção de novas plantas medicinais com propriedades hipotensores.

ABSTRACT

Aspects related to the nature of stem thickening in monocotyledons have been the subject of many studies. Primary thickening has been attributed to the Primary Thickening Meristem (PTM). According to most authors, it gives rise, besides the adventitious roots, to the vascular tissues and part of the cortex. In other words, it has centripetal and centrifugal activity. For some authors, however, it gives rise only to the vascular system, and for others, only to part of the cortex. However, this work demonstrated that PTM corresponds to the pericycle in the meristematic phase or to the pericycle associated with the endodermis, also with meristematic activity. It was observed that the pericycle was responsible for the formation of the vascular system of the rhizome and of the adventitious roots; the endodermis gave rise to cell layers with radial disposition which comprised the inner portion of the stem cortex, and which corresponded to the region known as the derivatives of the meristematic endodermis (DME). A continuity was also demonstrated between the tissues of the stem and root in species of Scleria Berg. (Cyperaceae).


Aspectos relacionados à natureza do espessamento em caules de monocotiledôneas têm sido objeto de estudo de muitos pesquisadores. O espessamento primário vem sendo atribuído ao meristema de espessamento primário (MEP). Segundo a maioria dos autores origina, além das raízes adventícias, os tecidos vasculares e parte do córtex. Para alguns autores, no entanto, origina apenas o sistema vascular e para outros, apenas parte do córtex. Entretanto, demonstra-se neste trabalho, que o MEP corresponde ao periciclo em fase meristemática ou ao periciclo associado à endoderme, também com atividade meristemática. Verificou-se que o periciclo é responsável pela formação do sistema vascular do rizoma e pela formação das raízes adventícias; a endoderme origina fileiras radiais de células que constituem a porção interna do córtex caulinar e que correspondem à região denominada derivadas da endoderme meristemática (DEM). Demonstra-se também, a continuidade entre os tecidos do caule e da raiz nas espécies de Scleria Berg. (Cyperaceae).

ABSTRACT

The Cyperaceae of La Selva Biological Station, Costa Rica. The family Cyperaceae is cosmopolitan and includes some 115 genera and 3600 species. Costa Rica has 25 genera and 210 species. Here I present keys and descriptions for 34 species (10 genera) that occur in La Selva Biological Station, Costa Rica. The genus Cyperus is represented by 12 species, followed by Rhynchospora (6), Scleria (5), Calyptocarya (2), Eleocharis (2), Kyllinga (2), Mapania (2), Hypolytrum (1) and Lipocarpha (1). Oxycaryum cubense (Poepp & Kunth) Palla, has been collected in the vicinity and could eventually be found at the Station. Rev. Biol. Trop. 57 (Suppl. 1): 93-110. Epub 2009 November 30.


La familia Cyperaceae es cosmopolita e incluye unos 115 géneros y 3600 especies. Costa Rica tiene 25 géneros y 210 especies. Aquí presento claves y descripciones para las 34 especies (10 géneros) que ocurren en la Estación Biológica La Selva, Costa Rica. El género Cyperus está representado por 12 especies, seguido por Rhynchospora (6), Scleria (5), Calyptocarya (2), Eleocharis (2), Kyllinga (2), Mapania (2), Hypolytrum (1) y Lipocarpha (1). Oxycaryum cubense (Poepp & Kunth) Palla, ha sido colectada en los alrededores y eventualmente podría ser encontrada en la Estación.

ABSTRACT

Foi realizado o estudo florístico das macrófitas do Município de General Carneiro, localizado no sul do Estado do Paraná, entre as coordenadas 26º 19' 37"/ 26º 26' 40" S e 51º 26' 51"/ 51º 19' 14" W. Os locais de coleta foram as fazendas São Pedro, São Pedro II, Santa Cândida e Lageado Grande, entre os Rios São Pedro, São João, São Manoel, Iratim, Lajeado Grande e Neno. Com a finalidade de se conhecer a flora dos rios e lagoas da região foram realizadas coletas aleatórias das macrófitas entre 2004 e 2006. Os exemplares encontram-se depositados no herbário UPCB e MBM. Registraram-se 45 famílias, 42 de angiospermas, 70 gêneros e 117 espécies. Os ambientes aquáticos são caracterizados floristicamente pelas Cyperaceae, representada por 22 táxons, o que significa cerca de 21 por cento de todos os táxons encontrados, seguidos pelas Poaceae (8), Asteraceae (7) e Polygonaceae (6). Dentre as espécies registradas podemos destacar o primeiro registro para o estado de Lilaeopsis minor Prez-Mor., Apiaceae.


A floristic study of macrophyte communities was conducted at General Carneiro township, situated in Southern Parana State, among 26º 19' 37"/ 26º 26' 40" S and 51º 26' 51"/ 51º 19' 14" W. Samples were collected at São Pedro, São Pedro II, Santa Cândida and Lageado Grande farms, between the rivers São Pedro, São João, São Manoel, Iratim, Lajeado Grande and Neno, in order to study the flora of the rivers and ponds in this region. Macrophyte samples were randomly collected between 2004 and 2006 and registered in the UPCB and MBM herbaria. A total of 45 families was found, 42 of them being angiosperms, 70 genera and 117 species. The aquatic environments are floristicaly characterized by Cyperaceae, represented by 22 taxa, what means approximately 21 percent of all the encountered taxa, followed by Poaceae (8), Asteraceae (7) and Polygonaceae (6). Among the registered species we can highlight the first record in this state of Lilaeopsis minor Prez-Mor, Apiaceae.

Foi realizado o levantamento das espécies de Eleocharis (Cyperaceae) no Estado do Rio de Janeiro - Brasil, a partir de exsicatas depositadas nos principais herbários do Estado (FCAB, GUA, HB, HUNI, R, RB, RBR, RFA, RUSU), assim como coletadas em excursões a ecossistemas aquáticos na área de estudo, entre novembro de 1998 a setembro de 2003. O gênero Eleocharis está representado no Estado do Rio de Janeiro por 19 espécies: Eleocharis acutangula (Roxb.) Schult., E. debilis Kunth, E. elongata Chapm., E. equisetoides (Elliott) Torr., E. filiculmis Kunth, E. flavescens (Poir.) Urb., E. geniculata (L.) Kunth*, E. sellowiana Kunth, E. squamigera Svenson e E. subarticulata (Nees) Boeck (*espécies raras no Estado do Rio de Janeiro). São apresentadas chave de identificação, descrições, ilustrações, informações adicionais de natureza ecológica e distribuição geográfica das espécies de Eleocharis do Estado do Rio de Janeiro.


A floristic inventory of the species of Eleocharis (Cyperaceae) from Rio de Janeiro State - Brazil was made. This research included material from most important Herbaria of Rio de Janeiro (FCAB, GUA, HB, HUNI, R, RB, RBR, RFA, RUSU) as well as plants collected during expeditions to aquatic ecosystems of Rio de Janeiro, between November 1998 and September 2003. The genus Eleocharis is represented in the area by 19 species: Eleocharis acutangula (Roxb.) Schult., E. debilis Kunth, E. elongata Chapm., E. equisetoides (Elliott) Torr., E. filiculmis Kunth, E. flavescens (Poir.) Urb., E. geniculata (L.) Roem. & Schult., E. interstincta (Vahl) Roem. & Schult., E. maculosa (Vahl) Roem. & Schult., E. minarum Boeck.*, E. minima Kunth, E. montana (Kunth) Roem. & Schult., E. mutata (L.) Roem. & Schult., E. nana Kunth, E. pachystyla (C. Wright) C. B. Clarke*, E. radicans (Poir.) Kunth*, E. sellowiana Kunth, E. squamigera Svenson, and E. subarticulata (Nees) Boeck. (*species rare in Rio de Janeiro state). A key of identification, descriptions of species, illustrations, and notes on ecological features and geographical distribution are presented.

O gênero Eleocharis R. Br. compreende cerca de 200 espécies, ocorrendo em ambientes úmidos tais como brejos e margens de rios e lagos. Procurando novos agentes moluscicidas, os extratos de Eleocharis acutangula (Roxb.) Schult., Eleocharis interstincta (Vahl) Roem. & Schult., Eleocharis maculosa (Vahl) Roem. & Schult. e Eleocharis sellowiana Kunth foram testados para atividade moluscicida, contra caramujos adultos e desovas, e toxicidade (ensaio de letalidade com Artemia salina). O extrato hexânico de Eleocharis acutangula (parte subterrânea fresca) foi ativo contra Artemia salina (CL50 = 476,00 mg/mL), enquanto os demais extratos apresentaram CL50 >> 10³ mg/mL, sugerindo baixa toxicidade. O extrato hidro-etanólico de Eleocharis sellowiana (parte subterrânea fresca) foi ativo contra desovas de Biomphalaria glabrata (CL50 = 24,27 mg/mL) mas inativo contra indivíduos adultos. Os demais extratos testados não apresentaram atividade moluscicida.


The genus Eleocharis R. Br. comprises about 200 species, occurring in wet environments like swamps, lakes and river margins. In the search for new molluscicides, extracts from Eleocharis acutangula (Roxb.) Schult., Eleocharis interstincta (Vahl) Roem. & Schult., Eleocharis maculosa (Vahl) Roem. & Schult. and Eleocharis sellowiana Kunth were tested for molluscicidal activity (spawns and adult snails) and toxicity (Brine Shrimp Lethality - BSL - bioassay). The hexane extract of Eleocharis acutangula (fresh subterraneous parts) was active in the BSL bioassay (LC50 = 476 mg/mL), while the other extracts showed LC50 >> 10³ mg/mL, suggesting they have low toxicity. The aqueous ethanol extract of Eleocharis sellowiana (fresh subterraneous parts) was active against Biomphalaria glabrata spawns (LC50 = 24.27 mg/mL) but it was not lethal to adult snails. No other plant extract tested in this study showed molluscicidal activity.
