Beyond The Boundaries: Understanding Buddhist Development From Orient To Occident With Reference To Italy And Dante

On the viewpoint of topographical location Orient and Occident are two sides of the globe. Socially, culturally, linguistically, traditionally, politically, philosophically and psychologically both are two entirely different entities. Rudyard Kipling wrote the poem titled 'The Ballad of East and West' in which he said “Oh, East is East, and West is West, and never the twain shall meet” (Jouhki, 2006, p 01). However, when the matter of meditation, religion, spirituality, devotion, high spirits, deep feelings and beliefs etc. arises it is observable that Occident tends to go in line with Orient. But unfortunately due to false beliefs both eastern and western scholars took no importance of East on the West and it has been made to notice that only Orient has learnt from the Occident. Kipling expressed further “But there is neither East nor West, Border, nor Breed, nor Birth,When two strong men stand face to face, tho' they come from the ends of the earth!” (Jouhki, 2006, p 15). The present paper tries to explore the influence of Orient to Occident especially in the frame of the reference of Buddhism .

Ingredientes de um prato exótico: saúde e alimentação em pauta no primeiro Congresso Médico Amazônico (Belém, 1939) / Ingredients for an exotic dish: health and diet on the agenda of the first Amazonian Medical Congress (Belém, 1939)

Resumo O artigo apresenta o contexto de organização e realização do primeiro Congresso Médico Amazônico, ocorrido na cidade de Belém, em agosto de 1939. Inserido na tradição da divulgação científica de seu tempo, o evento reuniu parte das elites médicas da região e contou com a participação de convidados reconhecidos nacional e internacionalmente, entre eles Josué de Castro e Dante Costa. Tendo como principais fontes os materiais impressos produzidos pelo congresso e as notícias veiculadas nos jornais paraenses, este texto examina a concentração de debates sobre as carências alimentares da Amazônia observando a compreensão acadêmica e política das faces do fenômeno para a região.

Abstract The context in which the first Amazonian Medical Congress was organized and held in Belém, Brazil, in August 1939, is presented. Within the tradition of scientific communication of its time, the event brought together some of the region's medical elites and also had nationally and internationally renowned guest participants, including Josué de Castro and Dante Costa. Taking the printed matter produced by the congress and news stories printed in the local press as its main sources, this study examines the accompanying debates on dietary deficiencies in the Amazon, observing academic and political understandings of the different aspects of the phenomenon for the region.

Contribuições da Psicologia à educação: a crítica social de Dante Moreira Leite / Contributions of Psychology to education: Dante Moreira Leite's social critique / Contribuciones de la Psicología para la educación: la crítica social de Dante Moreira Leite

Discute-se, aqui, as contribuições da Psicologia, elaborada por Dante Moreira Leite, importante intelectual e psicólogo brasileiro, para a educação. O objetivo é analisar a crítica social realizada pelo pesquisador, quanto aos seus potenciais e limites, relacionando-a com as principais conclusões da teoria crítica da sociedade, conforme os autores da primeira geração. Constata-se que Dante debate problemas fundamentais da educação nacional, com destaque para seus estudos acerca dos conceitos de ideologia e preconceito, evidenciando que as manifestações de tais conceitos são psicológicas, mas as origens são sociais. Dante elaborou, então, proposições com o intuito de motivar o aluno, mantendo-o na escola e promovendo o seu aprendizado, de melhor preparar o professor, bem como para propugnar medidas pedagógicas, até hoje em discussão. No entanto, nota-se que suas proposições se voltam mais para a adaptação à ordem social vigente do que à crítica dessa ordem.(AU)

Here we discuss the contributions of Psychology to education, as formulated by Dante Moreira Leite, an important Brazilian intellectual and psychologist. Our objective is to analyse the social critique elaborated by this researcher, regarding its potentials and limits, relating it to the main conclusions of critical theory of society, as stablished by the authors of the first generation. Although Dante discusses fundamental problems of national education, here we highlight his studies regarding ideology and prejudice, whose manifestations are psychological, but origins are social. The author makes propositions with the intention of motivating the students, keeping them in school and promoting their apprenticeship, preparing the teacher, also advocating pedagogical measures that are until this day under discussion. However, it is noted that his propositions relate more to adaptation to the current social order than to the criticism of that order.(AU)

Se discute, aquí, las contribuciones de la Psicología para la educación, conforme elaborada por Dante Moreira Leite, importante intelectual y psicólogo brasileño. El objetivo es analizar la crítica social elaborada por el investigador, en cuanto a sus potenciales y límites, relacionándola con las principales conclusiones de la teoría crítica de la sociedad, consonante con los autores de la primera generación. Se constata que Dante debate problemas fundamentales de la educación nacional, con destaque para sus estudios acerca de la ideología y el prejuicio, siendo que sus manifestaciones son psicológicas, pero sus orígenes son sociales. Elabora, entonces, proposiciones con el propósito de motivar al alumno, manteniéndolo en la escuela y promoviendo su aprendizaje, la preparación del profesor, así como propugnar medidas pedagógicas, hasta hoy en discusión. Sin embargo, se nota que sus proposiciones se vuelven más a la adaptación al orden social vigente que a la crítica de ese orden.(AU)

A grandeza repulsiva, amiúde detestável do Inferno de Dante / The repulsive, sometimes hateful magnificence of Dante's Hell / La repugnante grandeza, a menudo detestable del Infierno de Dante

Este artigo pretende orientar o leitor a respeito da natureza do Inferno de Dante. Inicialmente, a noção de “inferno” é situada na tradição greco-latina. A seguir, procura-se rastrear algumas fontes em que Dante teria se inspirado para compor o seu Inferno que, no dizer de Goethe, possuía uma “grandeza repulsiva amiúde detestável”. Por fim, quatro exemplos são apresentados para ilustrar a força de sua criação poética.

This article intends to orient the reader about the nature of Dante’s Hell. Firstly, “hell’s” conception is outlined in greek-latin tradition. Afterwards, some sources in which Dante possibly inspired himself to build his Hell, are looked for: in Goethe’s words, the result held a “repulsive, sometimes hateful magnificence”. At last, four examples are shown to illustrate his poetic creativity.

En este artículo se guía al lector sobre la naturaleza del infierno de Dante. Inicialmente, el concepto de “infierno” es ubicado en la tradición grecolatina. A continuación, se intenta trazar algunas fuentes en el que Dante se había inspirado para componer su infierno que, en palabras de Goethe, tenía una “repugnante grandeza, a menudo detestable”. Por último, cuatro ejemplos se presentan para ilustrar la fuerza de su creación poética.

Dante Moreira Leite: um pioneiro da psicologia social no Brasil / Dante Moreira Leite: a pioneer of social psychology in Brazil

Apresenta-se o trabalho pioneiro no Brasil, na área da Psicologia Social, de Dante Moreira Leite, consignado em três obras: O Caráter Nacional Brasileiro, Psicologia Diferencial e Psicologia e Literatura. Nessas obras examinam-se em particular os tópicos relações interpessoais, caráter nacional e vinculações entre Literatura e Psicologia. Apresentam-se também, brevemente, o Autor em suas atividades de professor, pesquisador, escritor, tradutor e administrador acadêmico.

Dante Moreira Leite’s pioneer work in Brazilian Social Psychology is presented through the analysis of three of his main books: Brazilian National Character, Differential Psychology and Psychology and Literature. The subjects especially considered in these writings are interpersonal relations, national character and the links between Literature and Psychology. His activities as professor, researcher, writer, translator and academic manager are also introduced.

Dante Moreira Leite: ciência psicológica, interdisciplinaridade e diferença / Dante Moreira Leite: psychological science, interdisciplinarity and difference

Este artigo tem como objetivo apresentar alguns aspectos da vida e obra de Dante Moreira Leite através da análise de suas principais obras e de manuscritos inéditos, complementada pela coleta de depoimentos de seus contemporâneos. A apresentação organiza-se em torno da construção de uma imagem do autor como intelectual, destacando seu papel na constituição de padrões científicos de ensino e pesquisa em Psicologia Social em nosso meio acadêmico e busca compreender as concepções da ciência psicológica, a prática da interdisciplinaridade e o tema da diferença tal como se constelam nas obras.

The purpose of this paper is to present some aspects of Dante Moreira Leite’s life and work, by the analysis of his main books and manuscripts, complemented through his colleagues and students’ testimonies. It attempts to build up the author’s intellectual image, stressing mainly his role in constituting teaching and research scientific patterns to Social Psychology in Brazil. It also seeks to understand his psychological science conceptions, interdisciplinary practices and the issue of difference as it appears in his work.
