ABSTRACT

Objective@#To research the effectiveness of deep learning techniques in intelligently diagnosing dental caries and periapical periodontitis and to explore the preliminary application value of deep learning in the diagnosis of oral diseases@*Methods@#A dataset containing 2 298 periapical films, including healthy teeth, dental caries, and periapical periodontitis, was used for the study. The dataset was randomly divided into 1 573 training images, 233 validation images, and 492 test images. By comparing various neural network models, the MobileNetV3 network model with better performance was selected for dental disease diagnosis, and the model was optimized by tuning the network hyperparameters. The accuracy, precision, recall, and F1 score were used to evaluate the model's ability to recognize dental caries and periapical periodontitis. Class activation map was used to visualization analyze the performance of the network model@*Results@#The algorithm achieved a relatively ideal intelligent diagnostic effect with precision, recall, and accuracy of 99.42%, 99.73%, and 99.60%, respectively, and the F1 score was 99.57% for classifying healthy teeth, dental caries, and periapical periodontitis. The visualization of the class activation maps also showed that the network model can accurately extract features of dental diseases.@*Conclusion@#The tooth lesion detection algorithm based on the MobileNetV3 network model can eliminate interference from image quality and human factors and has high diagnostic accuracy, which can meet the needs of dental medicine teaching and clinical applications.

ABSTRACT

@#Naval armed forces are commonly prone to stressors during military activities which are associated with their working environment. This can adversely impact the oral health of these personnel. This scoping review aimed to explore the literature concerning oral health among naval personnel. Relevant articles that reported oral health among naval armed forces published from 1990 to December 2022 were retrieved from five main databases. Of the 641 articles searched, 15 met the inclusion and exclusion criteria. Occurrences of caries, periodontal disease and barodontalgia were high among the naval armed forces, with a significant number of dental emergencies during deployment and training operations. The dental diseases and emergencies experienced by the naval personnel on duty may influence their performance during missions. Given the far-reaching effects of dental diseases among personnel in the naval armed forces, further prospective studies with standardised report investigating oral health and dental diseases are recommended. Oral health services in the naval armed forces can also be improved by increasing the dentist-to-navy personnel ratio both at the military bases and on board the vessels during missions, as well as designing preventive strategies to improve oral health among the naval personnel.

ABSTRACT

Dental disease restricts activities in school, work, and home and often significantly diminishes the quality of life for many children and adults, especially those who have low income or are uninsured. Though the overall dentist population ratio in India is 1:10,000, at present in rural India, one dentist is serving 2.5 lakhs of people. Only 15-20% of people in India are able to get dental services through national schemes, and 80-85% are spending money from their pockets, providing an ideal breeding ground for quackery into dental practice in India. Dental quacks cater to the lower-middle and lower socioeconomic classes that cannot afford qualified dental practitioners. A large number of people visiting these quacks seek care only when in pain, have a restricted budget, and are not very quality conscious. Dentistry has come a long way in the last one and a half century; today it is ranked as one of the most respected professions. It is incumbent upon dentists everywhere to protect this hard-earned reputation by weeding out quacks from among them. The government should urge fresh graduates to practice in rural areas and provide more incentives to them. Public health dentists should take the initiative of adopting more community-oriented oral health programs to increase the awareness among rural populations.

ABSTRACT

The accidental trauma of the teeth is considered a oro-dental disease and may be one of the most dramatic accidents happening to people; its frequency in the dentist clinic increases every day. With the purpose of identifying the frequency of the dental trauma in teenagers with permanent dentition, we developed an observational, descriptive, cross-sectional study, which universe was formed by 1 065 students of the junior high schools Heroes del Moncada and Armando Mestre, of the health area Milanés, Matanzas city, in the school year 2008-2009. A total of 187 students aged from 10 to 15 years were affected for some dental trauma. The results allowed identifying that the male gender and the age group 14-15 years were the most represented ones (35,8 %); the most affected by trauma teeth were the 11 and the 21 ones, and the most traumatic lesion found was the non-complicated crown fracture (26,2 %).

ABSTRACT

The objective of the present work is to give information related to the dental management of patient receiving antithrombotic therapy, since people with heart disease frequently receive this kind of therapy, and they range a wide population in Venezuela , in addition to the high prevalence of cavities and periodontal disease ; therefore, it is necessary the specialists and dentist to be updated on the management of those patients, because the surgical and non surgical dental treatment may lead to hemorrhagic complications and on one hand, the withdrawal of medication may cause the onset of a thrombotic phenomenon, on the other hand, the pharmacological therapy commonly used in dentistry may interact to the medical treatment and cause complications; for managing those patients, it is important to use the haemostatic agents in order to avoid and control the local bleeding.

ABSTRACT

Background: According to the National Hospital of Odonto-Stomatology, over 90% of the Vietnamese population has dental diseases in 2001. Although school dental care programs were developed in the early 1980s, the prevalence of dental diseases still remains high in pupils. In Ha Noi, the majority of schools performed only two or three of the four contents of the school dental care program. Objectives: To assess the school dental care services at four primary schools in Ha Noi. Subjects and method: A study was performed on the schools management staffs, teachers, school health workers and 1st year pupils of four primary schools in Ha Noi in the period from October 2004 to April 2006. There were 181 first year pupils. This was a community intervention study. Results and conclusions: The dental education program was in the 1st grade schoolbook. The schools did not directly treat dental diseases for pupils because they lacked the equipments, dental medicine and dentists. All 100% of the pupils were educated about dental hygiene After implementing the interventions of the pilot model of the school dental care services; the knowledge of dental care was improved dramatically in all the mentioned schools. The prevalence of dental caries decreased from 54.14% to 42.77%. 82.77% of the pupils possessed the knowledge of dental care after intervention vs 41.44% before intervention and 75% vs 33.56% possessed the skill of dental care practice.

ABSTRACT

Many images of X-ray examination showed that the treatment of endodontal disease had a good effect but infact, the root canal was not completely closed, the fluid can permeat in to the root canal leading to the infection. Regardless the arthopady of the root canal and isolation of teeth during fusion, this study applied a method of trans versal stuff of root canal. This method involved the stuff of the patch in to the root canal by stick of gutta or lentulo and then stuff of the main gutta and smaller stick with standard stick in to the end of root canal, at last cutting the spare gutta
