ABSTRACT

Objective: Impacted tooth develops when the tooth fails to erupt into its anatomical functional position. The aim of this prospective study was to find out common clinical effects of impacted lower molar on adjacent tissues and to evaluate the relationship between signs and symptoms of impacted tooth as regards gender and age respectively. Material and Methods: Data for this study were obtained using a well-structured questionnaire at the Teem Dental Hospital Warri, Nigeria. The data included age, sex, and clinical features of patients with confirmed diagnosis of impacted lower third molar following clinical examination and radiographic investigation. Data were analysed and chi-square was employed. Results: A total of 131 patients were examined, 57 (44.5%) were males and 74 (56.5%) were females within the ages of 10-40 years. Patients within the ages of 21-25 years had the highest frequency (32.1%) of impacted lower third molar. It was observed that impacted tooth had a gender predilection towards females than males. Inflamed gingivae around lower 3rd molar 60(45.8%) and pain on the lower third molar 72(55.0%) were most predominantly associated with impacted third molar teeth. No significant association was observed between age (0.909) and gender (0.461) against symptoms of impacted tooth but significant association (0.001) between age and sign was observed. Conclusion: The most commonly associated effect of impacted third molar is inflammation of the adjacent gingivae alongside pain around the lower third molar. Prevalence of impacted molar tooth was gender based with age being a predilection factor in its signs of presentation. (AU)

ABSTRACT

It is essential to take account of different levels of clinical need in order to measure the fair use of health care. Patient satisfaction is a multi-dimensional healthcare issue, affected by many factors. Healthcare quality affects patient satisfaction, and in result it influences on positive patient behavior such as confidence in hospital care. Measurement of patient satisfaction is expected to play an increasingly important role in the growing push toward accountability among health care providers overshadowed by measures of clinical processes and outcomes in the quality of care equation. There is not much emphasis on the behavioral aspects in the training programs in our teaching colleges. This study was planned to measure the patient satisfaction in teaching hospital, Government Dental College and Hospital Srinagar, Jammu and Kashmir to assess the quality of care provided in terms of patients’ satisfaction. A total sample size of 300 participants was collected by consecutive sampling technique. Participants were interviewed privately face to face in the hospital premises, different characteristics of hospital like behavior of doctor, paramedical staff, waiting time, and treatment etc. which can affect the patient satisfaction were measured percentage level, 0% least satisfied and 100% most satisfied. The highest mean percent satisfaction score (64.15±11.61) was seen in age interval of 25-35 years. The higher satisfaction was seen in females. It was also seen that patient satisfaction depends upon educational status of the patients, similarly highest satisfaction was seen in low income class who had mean percent satisfaction score of 63.34±10.09 and it decreased as income level increased and become minimum in highest income level. ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to develop a dentine hypersensitivity (DH) manual for a dental hospital. METHODS: The records of all DH patients who presented between 2005 to 2010 were analyzed to determine their age group, awareness of DH, and DH distribution before and after dental treatment. RESULTS: Out of 953,272 patients, data of 4,646 were analyzed. The male to female ratio of DH patients was found to be 1:1:1. The prevalence of DH was highest in patients in the age group of 40-49 years. The DH awareness rate was high to time, temperature and after dental treatment factor in the middle-age group. CONCLUSIONS: Since DH is widely prevalent and common, systematic screening is essential to ensure good oral health.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: Many factors are considered when a patient chooses the type of dental institution they wish to receive treatment from. Numerous studies have been conducted regarding this issue. However, more research is needed in analyzing the patient's psychological aspects when he/she decides to choose the dental institution they wish to receive treatment from. METHODS: A locus of control test was utilized to analyze the psychological aspects in orthodontic patients of a university dental hospital and a private dental clinic. The locus of control test is known to be useful in predicting a human being's behavior. Both intrinsic and extrinsic locus of control tests were carried out in 934 orthodontic patients attending Seoul National University Dental Hospital and 1466 orthodontic patients from a private dental clinic. RESULTS: The orthodontic patients at the university dental hospital showed a stronger extrinsic locus of control compared with those from the private dental clinic. CONCLUSION: The orthodontic patients at the university dental hospital value the doctor as the authority figure and the treatment quality more than those at the private dental clinic.

ABSTRACT

A retrospective analysis was performed on 219 pediatric patients who had received operations from May in 1993 to February in 1995 in Dental Hospital of Seoul National University. Of the 219 pediatric patients with oral and maxillofacial surgery, thc percentage of rhinoplasty and cheiloplasty was 23%, palatorrhaphy 21%, alveoloplasty and iliac bone graft 9%, mass excision of benign tumor 9%, alveoloplasty 8% and cheiloplasty 7%. The age distribution of the pediatric patients with oral and maxillofacial surgery in descending order was 33.8% iri group between 1 and 5 years old, 32.4% in group between 6 and 10 years old, 24.7% in group over 10 years old, and 9.1% in group between 1 month and 1 year old. The sex distribution of the pediatric patients with oral and maxillofacial surgery in descending order was 60.7% in male group and 39.3% in female group. In dental pediatric patients with oral and maxillofacial surgery, the percentage of the nasotracheal and orotracheal intubation was 45% and 55% each.
