ABSTRACT

Introduction: Light curing lamps that use light-emitting diodes (LED) are used in dentistry for the polymeric conversion of dental restorative materials. It has been reported that inadequate light intensity in the lamp would not ensure the appropriate polymerization of restorative materials. Objective: Determine the output intensity of LED light curing units used in dental offices of the city of Piura, Peru, in the year 2020. Methods: An observational descriptive study was conducted. Measurements were taken of the light output of 70 LED light curing lamps using a radiometer with a wavelength of 400-500 nm and a light intensity measurement capacity of up to 3 500 mw/cm2. Intensity below 400 mw/cm2 was recorded as low, from 400 to 800 mw/cm2 as medium, from 800 a 1 200 mw/cm2 as high and above 1 200 mw/cm2 as very high. Results: Intensity was medium in 48.5 percent of the lamps analyzed, high in 22.86 percent, low in 15.71 percent and very high in 12.86 percent. A lower frequency of lamps with greater clinical use was reported. Conclusions: The LED light curing lamps used in dental offices of the province of Piura during the year 2020 emit an average output intensity of 778.14 mW/cm2, which corresponds to medium intensity(AU)

ABSTRACT

Medical emergencies are likely to occur in dental offices due to the use of anesthetics, anxiety, and systemic complications of the patient. Since such emergencies are life threatening in many cases, preparedness of the dentist is highly required. Aims: This study was carried out to evaluate the dentists' knowledge and attitude regarding diagnosis and treatment of medical emergencies in dental offices in Shiraz, Iran. Methods: This cross-sectional study was performed on 150 general dentists in Shiraz with at least 5 years since graduation in 2015. They were asked to complete a validated questionnaire including the dentists' demographic information and inquiries about their performance and knowledge in emergency situations. Statistical Analysis Used: Independent t-test, one-way ANOVA, and Pearson's correlation coefficient were used in this study. Results: According to the inclusion criteria, 105 dentists participated in the study. The mean knowledge and attitude of the dentists was estimated 4.98 (±1.50) out of 10. No significant correlation was detected between age, sex, number of patients per day, and working hours with the knowledge of managing an emergency situation (P > 0.05). Out of the number of studied dentists, 49% had attended training workshops and 90% called for re-attending a workshop. The knowledge score of those who had participated in workshops was significantly higher than those who had not (P = 0.016). Conclusion: The results of this study revealed that the dentists' knowledge about emergency situations was average while the knowledge was higher in those who had attended emergency workshops. Thus, retraining courses and workshops must be considered more often for graduated dentists.

ABSTRACT

Background: Increasingly, anesthesiologists are often required to perform procedures outside the operating room. An interesting field is sedation in the dental office. This poses a major challenge given the remoteness of a hospital and the anxiety generated in the patient. Therefore a perfect balance must be achieved between anxiolysis and safety for each case. Materials and Methods: We prospectively studied patients undergoing dental implants. We compared the use of two benzodiazepines, midazolam (M) and clonazepam (C) and evaluated the satisfaction of both the dental surgeon and the patient. Results: We studied 67 patients. When assessing patient satisfaction the patients were classified as good and very good with both drugs. However dentists in the evaluation some differences were found between the two groups, in the M group, three cases were evaluated as fair and no cases in group C (p <0.05). The cause of this poor assessment was explained by the operator, as a result of these three patients not being able to open their mouths during the procedure. There were no episodes of desaturation, hypotension or hypertensive crisis in any of the patients. Discussion: We demonstrated that sedation with benzodiazepines in the dentist's office as a useful and safe alternative with either midazolam or clonazepam. However, the use of midazolam leads to a deeper state of hypnosis that would prevent the patient to open the mouth suffuciently, making it difficult a dental procedure. In conclusion clonazepam could have the advantage of achieving high levels of satisfaction from both the dentist and the patient.

ABSTRACT

The aim of the present study was to investigate the expressed levels of job satisfaction of dental assistants working in Brazil and whether there are relationships among professional formation standards, workplace relations and job satisfaction. An analytical cross-sectional study was carried out with a calculated sample of 443 dental assistants. A questionnaire was developed for this purpose and its validity was verified in a pilot study. The questionnaire provided data for socioeconomic and demographic categorization and identified the variables that could be correlated to professional satisfaction. Job satisfaction was stratified into satisfaction and no satisfaction. All participants signed an informed consent form. Data were analyzed using SPSS software, version 13.0. Pearson's chi-square and Fisher's exact tests were performed. Among the 443 participants, 94.6% were women, 72.7% were aged between 21 and 40 years and 65.0% were single. Over half had 37 or more months of job experience and had completed their course at a public institution. The majority earned between US$141.00 and US$190.00 per month. Job satisfaction was mentioned by 81.5% of the dental personnel. It was found that most subjects were satisfied with their job, and that the level satisfaction is influenced negatively by salary, workplace, workload and dentist's personality.

ABSTRACT

The dental offices are considered favorable environments for contamination caused by biological or bioaerosols contaminants, due to the invasive procedures done in them. The objective of this work was to enumerate and to identify existing microorganisms in samples collected in dental offices with air conditioning system. This study also aimed as well to verify the incidence of microorganisms in dental facilities at the Center for Specialized Dentistry (CEO) in the city of Itanhém (BA) and to identify the most common microorganisms present in these environments. The collections were made through the sedimentation plate method.Four different culture media were used for detection in two areas of the dental office Baird-Parker Agar, Plate Count Agar, Eozin Methylen Blue Agar and Sabouraud Dextrose Agar. The areas analyzed were next to the spit sink and next to the air conditioner airflow. In the three dental offices fungus and bacteria were identified, mainly in the area of the spit sink due to contamination from saliva and the dispersion of microorganisms through the air conditioner airflow. The results show that the contamination of dental offices even with appropriate asepsis, disinfection and sterilization, confirms the necessity of such cares, as these microorganisms are responsible for a range of diseases.

ABSTRACT

The present study aimed to analyze the genetic similarity between genomic profiles of thirteen Klebsiella oxytoca and seven Klebsiella pneumoniae samples isolated from two different collections carried out in different places of dental offices. Random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) technique and similarity coefficients (calculated by Sorensen-Dice and simple matching) were applied to determine their genetic profile of randomic DNA sequences. The majority of the isolates of K. pneumoniae and K. oxytoca presented similar coefficient values (¡Ý 0.80). Thus, it was possible to identify that strain dissemination occurred mainly via the hands of the surgeon-dentists and, finally, to determine the genetic similarity of the strains from dental office environments.(AU)

ABSTRACT

The aim of this study is to check the prevalence of overweight and/or obesity in kitchen workers and to observe if there is any specific risk factor related to their working conditions. It is a cross-sectional study with all the kitchen (n =200) and laundry (n = 178) workers of eight public hospitals in Florianópolis, Santa Catarina, a state located in the South of Brazil. Collecting of data included checking their weighs and measures and their answers to a questionnaire. The prevalence of overweight and obesity (BM I? 25 kg/m2) was higher among kitchen workers; a positive association was found for females only (Prevalence Rate Ratio = 1,3; 95% CI; 1,1; 1,5). The variable food snacking in the workplace was found to be typical for kitchen workers, either male or female. It was also found that both male and female kitchen workers frequently snack 5.7 and 3.9 more in the workplace than laundry workers. The easy access to food may be the reason for the highest weight levels among women
