ABSTRACT

Abstract Background Clinical experiences emphasize the possible role of parental attitudes and behaviours in shaping stuttering behaviors however, the number of studies in this area is still insufficient. Objective Our aims were to compare parental attitudes in children with and without stuttering and to determine the effect of parental attitudes on stuttering severity. Methods We used an age and gender matched case control design with 24 children with stuttering and 22 healthy school children. Demographic information form and Parental Attitude Research Instrument (PARI) were enrolled by the mothers. Results According to our results; there was a statistically significant difference in parental attitudes of children with and without stuttering. Our results showed that excessive maternal control of the child and the expectations of obedience from the child more frequently observed in parents of the children with stuttering. Also there was a significant positive correlation with the severity of stuttering and excessive maternal control of the child, the expectations of obedience from the child and marital conflict. Discussion In conclusion, there was an important difference in parental styles of study group and this difference was related to the severity of stuttering. Clinicans should address parental attitudes in this samples.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the clinical characteristics of developmental stuttering. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed 28 children diagnosed with developmental stuttering from January 2001 to December 2010 who had been admitted to the Uijeongbu St. Mary's Hospital. RESULTS: We observed a strong male predominance. The M:F ratio was 13:1 in this study. And the onset age converged on 2-5 years (71.4%). Seven patients (25%) had a family history of language disorders. Among them, 5 cases (17.8%) was about to developmental stuttering. As for associated disorders, 5 patients (17.8%) had another language disorder as articulation disorder or developmental language delay; respectively 4 patients (14.2%) and 1 patient (3.6%). Three patients (10.7%) had psychologic disorder as ADHD or anxiety disorder; respectively 2 patients (7.1%) and 1 patient (3.6%). In addition, 2 patients (7.1%) had ankyloglossia including 1 case accompanying with articulation disorder. Another 2 patients (7.1%) had adenoid-hypertrophy also including 1 case accompanying with articulation disorder. The proportion of moderate-to-severe and severe cases was 63.6%. And we observed remarkable improvement of stuttering in 92.9% (13/14) patients during repetitive speech or text reading. CONCLUSION: Several distinctive characteristics of developmental stuttering were observed in this study. The value of this study is that it's the clinical report on developmental stuttering by pediatrician and we expect this study will contribute to the basis of forward investigation.

ABSTRACT

@#Objective To observe the abnormalities of speech production when developmental stutterers reading four-character Chinese words aloud and to discuss its etiology mechanisms. Methods The speech production results between the developmental stutterers and normal speakers when reading four-character Chinese words under the voice reaction time paradigm and computerize program in acoustic data analysis were compared. Results The voice duration time (VDT) of developmental stuttering group (791±82) ms was longer than that of the control group (687±93) ms (t=3.42,P<0.01),but the differences of voice reaction time (VRT) and voice error rate (VER) were not significant between these two groups. Conclusion The speech fluency disorders of developmental stuttering maybe mainly exist in the stage of speech movement, and probably due to the speech production disturbed with language processing.
