ABSTRACT

Abstract We aimed to analyze the association between sugar-sweetened beverage (SSB) consumption with healthy food markers (HFM) and unhealthy food markers (UFM) as well as their impact on these markers in the Brazilian population's diet. Food consumption during two nonconsecutive days of food records of individuals aged ten years or over were investigated in the National Dietary Survey 2008-2009 (n = 32,900) and the caloric contributions of HFM and UFM were distributed according to the categories of SSB consumption. Multiple linear regression was applied to analyze the associations between the consumption of SSB and the impact of a 50% reduction in portion size and dietary markers. The contribution of energy from HFM was higher among individuals who did not consume SSB. A 50% reduction in the average portion of SSB in the population would imply a 6% decrease in energy contribution to the diet and 12% decrease in total energy from added sugar. It would increase the consumption of HFM and dietary fiber by 7g and 4g, respectively. A 50% reduction in SSB serving size is a strategy that could improve the quality of the diet, increase the consumption of HFM and fiber and reduce the consumption of sugar and UFM.

ABSTRACT

Objective @#To understand the current situation and influencing factors of milk and dairy intake among primary and middle school students in Tongzhou District, Beijing, so as to provide the reference for the intervention of milk and dairy intake among primary and middle school students.@*Methods@#The stratified cluster sampling method was used to randomly select the students from the third to sixth grades of primary school, three grades of junior middle school and three grades of senior high school from downtown and township of Tongzhou District as the survey objects. The demographic information, family data, and milk and dairy intake of a week before were collected. Taking the average daily intake of 300 g milk and dairy as the standard (the Chinese Dietary Guidelines 2016), the multivariate logistic regression model was used to analyze the influencing factors for reaching the standard of average daily milk and dairy intake among the students. @*Results@#A total of 804 questionnaires were sent out, and 771 valid questionnaires were received, with a recovery rate of 95.90%. There were 321 primary school students, accounting for 41.63%; 228 junior high school students, accounting for 29.57%; and 222 high school students, accounting for 28.80%. The intake rate of milk and dairy products was 90.92%, and the adverse reaction rate was 10.12%. The daily intake rate was 36.71%. The median daily intake was 214.29 g, and the rate of average daily intake reaching the standard was 28.02%. The multivariate logistic regression results showed that primary school students (OR=1.672, 95%CI: 1.102-2.535), middle school students (OR=2.086, 95%CI: 1.349-3.225), overweight (OR=1.747, 95%CI: 1.131-2.700), obesity (OR=2.469, 95%CI: 1.698-3.591), and parents with bachelor's degree or above (OR=1.760, 95%CI: 1.022-3.029) were the influencing factors for reaching the standard of average daily milk and dairy intake among the students.@*Conclusions@#The average daily intake of milk and dairy products of primary and middle school students in Tongzhou District does not reach the recommended standard, and grade, body mass index and parents'education level were the influencing factors.

ABSTRACT

Abstract@#School age is critical period for children growth and behavior development. With the improvement of nutrition and health status in Chinese school-age children, they also faced multiple challenges, such as the increase of overweight and obesity, the prevalence of undernutrition and micronutrients deficiency. This is related to the irrational diet, lack of physical activity and unhealthy lifestyle, and also affected by the change of social environment. China has issued a series of nutrition and health related policies to promote healthy development of school-age children, either on poor rural children nutrition improvement, or on children obesity prevention and control. International organizations suggest that governments adopt comprehensive strategies to promote children s health by management on the food environment. It is suggested that China should strengthen the construction of laws and regulations, implement nutrition education and dietary guidance, strengthen the responsibility of parents, and evaluate the efficiency of policies, so as to improve the child nutrition and health.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Repeated 24 hour recall has been considered as a preferred method for obtaining accurate dietary information while time and cost for coding and data processing have been a major barrier for their use in large studies. This burden can be resolved by automating the interview and data processing. However, there has been no report about a computerized interview system for dietary survey in a free-living population in Korea. METHODS: This study attempts to test the feasibility of a newly-developed web-based dietary assessment program, Diet Evaluation System (DES) for subjects in a mixed region of urban and rural areas via wireless internet. We conducted total of 134 interviews, twice for each of 67 subjects of various age. As another aspect of feasibility, the group discussion among interviewers was done. RESULTS: Success rate of total attempted interviews was about 70%. Major reasons for problem with DES were instability of wireless internet and consequent inefficient booting of laptops in some areas. It took 14 minute 56 seconds on average to complete an interview and data processing conducted automatically. Subjects' age and internet environment influenced the DES interview time. The group discussion revealed that one-stop system with DES is fast and convenient assuming good wireless internet environment. CONCLUSIONS: Web-based dietary assessment was feasible in this community nutrition survey. To confirm the feasibility in large scale, studies with more comprehensive area and subjects are needed with various wireless condition.

ABSTRACT

This study was performed to investigate the relationship between milk and milk product consumption and dietary nutrient intake among Korean adolescents. Questionnaire survey and 3-day diet survey using the food record method were completed by a total of 664 subjects. Subjects were divided into three groups, Q1 (low group), Q2 (middle group), and Q3 (high group), according to dairy equivalent of calcium. Dairy equivalent of calcium was determined by the amount of calcium eaten from milk and milk products by individual subjects. As a result, the ratio of school milk service was higher in Q3 (PQ1 (PQ1 (P<0.05). The above results suggest that the school milk program is very helpful in encouraging adolescents to consume milk and milk products and consequently ensure their optimal nutrition. Therefore, we should try to encourage adolescents to participate in the school milk program more actively through nutritional education and government policy.
