ABSTRACT

Objective To investigate the influence of dietary cholesterol intake on gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM),at one year prior to and first and second trimesters of pregnancy.Methods Between March 2012 and September 2016,the pregnant women from the First Affiliated Hospital of Shanxi Medical University were asked to fill in a set of questionnaires,by which information on general demographic characteristics,diagnosis of GDM and dietary cholesterol intake was collected.Unconditional logistic regression method was used to analyze the influence of dietary cholesterol intake on GDM,at one year prior to and first and second trimesters of pregnancy.The association on dietary cholesterol intake and GDM between age groups was also analyzed.Results Data on 9 005 subjects,including 1 388 pregnant women with GDM,was collected.When the amount of cholesterol intake was stratified into quartile,results from the unconditional logistic regression showed that dietary cholesterol intake appeared ≥76.50 mg/d,both in the periods of one year prior to and the second trimester of pregnancy.This amount of dietary cholesterol intake would increase the risk of GDM (one year prior to pregnant:OR=1.230,95%CI:1.018-1.485;second trimester:OR=1.228,95%C1:1.014-1.486).Women who took ≥76.50 mg/d of daily cholesterol during the period of one year prior to,or 46.75-76.50 mg/d during the second trimester of pregnancy,the risks of GDM (OR=4.644,95%CI:1.106-19.499) would increase.Women with daily cholesterol intake over 76.50 mg/d during the period of one year prior to or at the second trimester of pregnancy,there appeared a risk on GDM (OR=1.217,95% CI:1.012-1.463).When maternal age was divided in two different subgroups and the cholesterol intake level was ≥76.50 mg/d both in the period of one year prior to pregnancy or at the second trimester,the risk of GDM appeared in the subgroup of <35 years old (OR=1.336,95%CI:1.083-1.647;OR=1.341,95%CI:1.087-1.654).However,no significant association was found in the maternal age group of ≥35 years old.Conclusion High level of dietary cholesterol intake would increase the risk of GDM,both in the period of one year prior to and at the second trimester of pregnancy.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVES: The aim of the study was to assess the intake of dietary cholesterol and its major food sources in the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES). METHODS: A total of 20,671 nationally representative sample who had 24-hour recall data from the KNHANES VI (2013–2015) was included in this study. Mean cholesterol intake and the prevalence of subjects with cholesterol intake over the Intake Goal of the Dietary Reference Intakes (DRIs) for Koreans were analyzed. Intakes of cholesterol by food groups or each food were calculated to find out the major food sources for cholesterol intake in Koreans. RESULTS: The mean dietary cholesterol intake was 261.3 mg, which was higher in men (303.5 mg) compared to women (219.1 mg). Dietary cholesterol intake and the prevalence of subjects with cholesterol intake over the Intake Goal of DRIs were the highest in the 19-29 year old group. The eggs was the first major food group source for cholesterol intake in all age groups. Major food sources for cholesterol intake among Korean were egg, chicken, pork, squid and beef, which contributed 66.9% to total cholesterol intake. CONCLUSIONS: Although the mean dietary cholesterol intake was under 300 mg, the prevalence of subjects with cholesterol intake over the Intake Goal of DRIs was about 30% in adults. Because both the mean intake and the prevalence of subjects with cholesterol intake over the Intake Goal of DRIs were higher in young adult groups, the dietary cholesterol intake was expected to be increased.

ABSTRACT

The Key Recommendation from 2010 Dietary Guidelines to limit consumption of dietary cholesterol to 300 mg per day, is not included in the 2015 edition. Dietary Guidelines for Americans 2015~2020 released in January 2016, omitted the limit for cholesterol intake in general population; but this change does not suggest that dietary cholesterol is no longer important to consider when building healthy eating patterns. The main shift of concept in recent dietary guidelines is that limitation of intake of single macronutrient should not help to promote health; controlling and recommendation for a healthy eating pattern is important for health and for the prevention of any diseases. In Korean dietary survey, eggs are the main resources for dietary cholesterol in Koreans. However, there are recent studies regarding no association between the egg consumption and serum cholesterol level and cardiovascular disease risk. In this review, I will focus on the 2015 recommendation on dietary cholesterol and fat intake. Furthermore, I will review the literature on the evidences for the egg consumption and cardiovascular disease risk.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: The main objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of a high cholesterol (HC) dietary challenge on cholesterol tissue accumulation, inflammation, adipocyte differentiation, and macrophage infiltration in guinea pigs. A second objective was to assess whether macronutrient manipulation would reverse these metabolic alterations. MATERIALS/METHODS: Male Hartley guinea pigs (10/group) were assigned to either low cholesterol (LC) (0.04g/100g) or high cholesterol (HC) (0.25g/100g) diets for six weeks. For the second experiment, 20 guinea pigs were fed the HC diet for six weeks and then assigned to either a low carbohydrate (CHO) diet (L-CHO) (10% energy from CHO) or a high CHO diet (H-CHO) (54% CHO) for an additional six weeks. RESULTS: Higher concentrations of total (P < 0.005) and free (P < 0.05) cholesterol were observed in both adipose tissue and aortas of guinea pigs fed the HC compared to those in the LC group. In addition, higher concentrations of pro-inflammatory cytokines in the adipose tissue (P < 0.005) and lower concentrations of anti-inflammatory interleukin (IL)-10 were observed in the HC group (P < 0.05) compared to the LC group. Of particular interest, adipocytes in the HC group were smaller in size (P < 0.05) and showed increased macrophage infiltration compared to the LC group. When compared to the H-CHO group, lower concentrations of cholesterol in both adipose and aortas as well as lower concentrations of inflammatory cytokines in adipose tissue were observed in the L-CHO group (P < 0.05). In addition, guinea pigs fed the L-CHO exhibited larger adipose cells and lower macrophage infiltration compared to the H-CHO group. CONCLUSIONS: The results of this study strongly suggest that HC induces metabolic dysregulation associated with inflammation in adipose tissue and that L-CHO is more effective than H-CHO in attenuating these detrimental effects.

Objetivos: Evaluar la relación entre el colesterol dietario, consumo de huevo y el perfíl lipídico en adultos aparentemente sanos, según grupo etario. Diseño: Estudio descriptivo, de asociación cruzada. Institución: Centro de Investigación de Bioquímica y Nutrición, Facultad de Medicina, Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos, Lima, Perú. Participantes: Adultos aparentemente sanos. Intervenciones: En 50 adultos aparentemente sanos se determinó el consumo de colesterol dietario, huevo y perfil lipídico. Resultados: Trece participantes consumían menos de 3 huevos/semana, 19 de 3 a 4 huevos/semana y 18 más de 4 huevos/semana. En relación al consumo de colesterol dietario, el grupo de 20 a 29 años presentó un promedio de ingesta (358,9±152,5 mg/dL) significativamente superior (p<0,05) al grupo de 30 a 39 años (223 ± 82,8 mg/dL). El colesterol (col) total de los tres grupos según consumo de huevo fue 179,8 ± 52, 168,8 ± 44 y 164,3 ± 62 mg/dL, respectivamente; para el HDL-col se obtuvo 38,9 ± 15, 28,0 ± 15 y 35,2 ± 14 mg/dL, respectivamente; para el LDL-col, 118,1±41, 112,5 ± 39 y 100,4 ± 47,9 mg/dL, respectivamente; para los triglicéridos, 199,2 ± 169, 152,8 ± 108 y 124,2 ± 92 mg/dL, respectivamente. Conclusiones: El consumo de colesterol dietario y huevo en la muestra estudiada no tuvo relación con el perfil lipídico.


Objectives: To determine the relationship between dietary cholesterol, egg consumption and lipid profile in apparently healthy adults according to age group. Design: Descriptive cross-association study. Setting: Biochemistry and Nutrition Research Center, Faculty of Medicine, Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos. Participants: Apparently healthy adults. Interventions: In 50 apparently healthy adults dietary cholesterol consumption, egg and lipid profile were determined. Results: Thirteen participants consumed less than 3 eggs / week, 19 consumed from 3-4 eggs / week and 18 consumed more than 4 eggs / week. The 20-29 year-old group had an average intake of dietary cholesterol (358,9 ± 152,5 mg / dL) significantly higher (p <0,05) than the group 30-39 year-old (223 ± 82, 8 mg / dL). Total cholesterol (chol) of the three groups according to egg consumption was respectively 179,8 ± 52, 168,8 ± 44, and 164,3 ± 62 mg / dL; for HDL-chol 38,9 ± 15 , 28,0 ± 15, and 35,2 ± 14 mg / dL; for LDL-chol 118,1 ± 41, 112,5 ± 39, and 100,4 ± 47,9 mg / dL; for triglycerides 199, 2 ± 169, 152,8 ± 108, 124,2 ± 92 mg / dL. Conclusions: The consumption of dietary cholesterol and eggs in the sample was not related to the lipid profile.
