ABSTRACT

Background: The prevalence of Autism in South Asia is 1 in 93 children, where, prevalence is much higher, 3% in Dhaka city of Bangladesh. Consumption of daily required nutrient is essential for these children like normal ones but sometimes may be neglected. Objectives: This study was undertaken to assess the macro and micronutrient consumption among the children with autism in Dhaka city and compared to the requirement.Material & Methods:In this cross-sectional study, 100 subjects where male-female ratio was 3:2, were studied from urban autism centers Dhaka, Bangladesh. Anthropometric parameters height, weight, BMI and 24-hour dietary recall (individual 3days) were collected following predesigned questionnaire. Data was collected from face to face interview from both parents and center抯 teacher as appropriate. Nutritive value of food was calculated using Food Composition Table for Bangladesh, 2014 using a food software. For statistical analysis, SPSS 20 was used.Results:The average age and BMI of subjects were 11 yrs and 21 kg/m2 respectively. The mean 盨Dvalues (g/day) of protein, fat and carbohydrate intake were 38�, 47� and 116� respectively. The average intake of (mg/day) thiamine, riboflavin, vitamin C, calcium, magnesium, iron, niacin, and zinc was 0.68�32, 0.46�23, 33�, 144�, 137�, 6.5� 11�and 5.2�respectively. About 94% children consumed only 33% of the required calcium. Nearly 42% children took 67% of the required magnesium. Similarly, half of the children failed to consume 33% thiamine and zinc of the requirement. Conclusions:Consumption of calcium, thiamine, folic acid, and zinc are seemed to be lower than their requirement.

ABSTRACT

Abstract Objective: To estimate the usual intake and the prevalence of inadequacy of selected nutrients in the Mexican population and the potential effect that the nutrient retention factors (NRF) could have on these estimates. Likewise, document the methodology used in the analysis of the 24 hours of the mid-way National Health and Nutrition Survey 2016 (Ensanut MC 2016). Materials and methods: Dietary information from the Ensanut MC 2016 was analyzed with and without the use of NRFs. Results: Most nutrients evaluated showed a relevant inadequacy prevalence above 10% in all age groups. Likewise, we documented that, when NRFs were not applied, estimated intakes and prevalence were significantly underestimated in a range of 2% to 55.5%. Conclusions: We documented the relevance of the application of NRFs for adequate estimation of the prevalence of inadequate intake of selected nutrients in population studies.


Resumen Objetivo: Estimar la ingesta habitual y la prevalencia de inadecuación de nutrimentos selectos en la población mexicana y el efecto potencial de los factores de retención de nutrimentos (FRN). Asimismo, describir la metodología utilizada en el procesamiento del recordatorio de 24 horas de la Encuesta Nacional de Salud y Nutrición de Medio Camino 2016 (Ensanut MC 2016). Material y métodos: Se analizó la información dietética de Ensanut MC 2016 con y sin utilización de FRN. Resultados: En los nutrimentos evaluados, las prevalencias de inadecuación fueron superiores al 10% en todos los grupos de estudio. La no consideración de los FRN causó la subestimación en las prevalencias de inadecuación en un rango de 2% a 55.5%. Conclusión: Se documenta la relevancia de la aplicación de FRN para la adecuada estimación de las prevalencias de inadecuación en estudios poblacionales.

ABSTRACT

Objective To analyze the intake and changes of food and nutrients in 223 residents of Yangpu District from 2011 to 2015. Methods From the China Nutritional Transition Cohort Study in 2011 and 2015, the data in the study was obtained on Yangpu District′s residents aged 2 and above.A dietary survey was conducted using the 3-day 24-hour dietary recall and condiment weighing method to obtain data on food and nutrients intake per reference man per day and the nutrient source of energy, and to analyze the intake status of different years. Results The intake of vegetables, fruits, livestock and poultry, aquatic products, eggs, milk and dairy products, soybeans and nuts, edible oil and salt per reference man per day was lower in 2015 than in 2011.The insufficient intake proportions of cereals and tubers, vegetables, fruits, aquatic products, eggs, milk and dairy products, soybeans and nuts, and edible oils were 56.0%, 84.0%, 98.2%, 56.0%, 70.2%, 97.8%, 85.3% and 91.1%, respectively, the excessive intake proportion of livestock and poultry meat was 51.6%;the intake of energy, protein, fat and micronutrient per reference man per day in 2015 was lower than in 2011, and the insufficient intake proportion of energy, protein, vitamin A, vitamin B1, vitamin B2, vitamin C, and calcium were 84.0%, 56.4%, 97.3%, 93.8%, 93.3%, 90.2% and 91.6%, respectively.In 2011 and 2015, it was found that residents who had the proportions of energy supply from carbohydrate lower than 50% accounted for 64.6% and 49.8%, those who had the proportions of energy supply from protein higher than 15% accounted for 76.2% and 40.4%, and those who had the proportions of energy supply from fat higher than 30% accounted for 76.7% and 72.9%. Conclusion In 2011-2015, the food and nutrients intakes among community residents in Yangpu District generally decrease, showing the coexistent problems of insufficient and excessive food intake, and the insufficient intake is serious.The insufficient intake of energy, vitamins and calcium is still a severe problem.And the dietary structure is not rational; the proportions of energy supply from three major nutrients are unbalanced.It is suggested that nutrition education for residents should be enhanced.

Con el objetivo de indagar sobre los hábitos alimentarios de los estudiantes de la carrera de Medicina de la Facultad de Ciencias Médicas de la Universidad Nacional de Rosario (UNR), y compararlos con las Guías Alimentarias para la Población Argentina se llevó a cabo un estudio cuali-cuantitativo, descriptivo, observacional y transversal. Se aplicó una encuesta y un recordatorio de 24 horas. La muestra quedó conformada por 140 alumnos. El consumo de alimentos declarado mostró que el 70% había consumido leche o yogur, el 56,4% frutas, el 79,3% verduras, el 75,7% carnes, el 62,1% cereales, el 20% huevos y el 25% fiambres. El 46,4% declaró haber utilizado azúcar y el 20% edulcorante. El 81,4% expresó haber consumido panificados blancos y sólo el 15,7% integrales. Los vegetales y el edulcorante fueron más consumidos por las mujeres y las carnes y los panificados blancos por los hombres. Respecto del hábito de desayunar fue importante el número de estudiantes que cumplió la recomendación de las Guías. El número de ingestas diarias recomendado (mínimo 4) lo cumplió el 77%. Sólo el 12,8% declaró consumir frutas y verduras tal como es recomendado (5 porciones al día). Respecto de los panificados, esta muestra no cumple la recomendación de seleccionar granos integrales.


The aim of this study was to investigate the dietary habits of the students at the School of Medicine, Faculty of Medical Sciences of the National University of Rosario (UNR), and to compare them with the Dietary Guidelines for the Argentinian population. We carried out a quantitative, descriptive, observational cross-sectional study using a 24- hour dietary recall questionnaire. The sample was made up of 140 students. The declared food consumption showed that 70% consumed milk or yogurt, 56.4% fruits, 79.3% vegetables, 75.7% meats, 62.1% cereals, 20% eggs and 25% cold cuts. Sugar consumption was reported by 46.4% of the students, and use of artificial sweeteners by 20% of them. Most students (81.4%) consumed white bread and only 15.7% whole wheat. While vegetables and sweeteners were more consumed by women, meat and white bread were more consumed by men. Many students met the recommendation for breakfast consumption. The recommended number of daily meals (minimum 4) was met by 77%. Only 12.8% reported eating fruits and vegetables as recommended (5 servings a day). Regarding breads, this sample does not meet the recommendation of selecting whole grains.

Background: Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a rapidly growing health problem in India. Diet and physical activity are important modifiable risk factors affecting the incidence, severity and management of DM. The aim of the study was to assess diet of diabetes mellitus patients. 87 adults from a cohort of diabetic patients attending the Medical Clinics at the Hamidia Hospital Bhopal were invited for the study.Methods: Information about their nutritional status & food consumption pattern was taken by 24-hour dietary recall and food frequency questionnaire. Data was analysed using Epi Info and MS Excel. Frequency counts and percentages were used to describe the demographic characteristics of the participants while the significance difference in between male and female participants. The significance level was set at P <0.05 and 0.01. Statistical analysis used: MS Excel and Epi Info.Results: The study sample was 87 out of which 56 were females and 31 were males; mean age of DM patients was 48.21±12.98.The mean energy intake was 1386.52 kcal and 1125.79 kcal among male and female. The mean protein intake was 68.71 g and 50.50 among male and female diabetics. There was significant difference between male and female age. There were no significant difference in body mass index and waist hip ratio between male and female. 30 (34.5%) & 16 (18.4%) were overweight and obese respectively.Conclusions: Based on these findings, the dietary practices of diabetic patients are inadequate and require improvement. Education and counselling about diet of a diabetes patient is needed.

This pilot study evaluated the usability of this new food picture application (app), which operates on a smartphone with an embedded camera and Internet capability. SUBJECTS/METHODS: Adults aged 19 to 28 years (23 males and 22 females) were assigned to use the Recaller app on six designated, nonconsecutive days in order to capture an image of each meal and snack before and after eating. The images were automatically time-stamped and uploaded by the app to the Recaller website. A trained nutritionist administered a 24-hour dietary recall interview 1 day after food images were taken. Participants' opinions of the Recaller app and its usability were determined by a follow-up survey. As an evaluation indicator of usability, the number of images taken was analyzed and multivariate Poisson regression used to model the factors determining the number of images sent. RESULTS: A total of 3,315 food images were uploaded throughout the study period. The median number of images taken per day was nine for males and 13 for females. The survey showed that the Recaller app was easy to use, and 50% of the participants would consider using the app daily. Predictors of a higher number of images were as follows: greater interval (hours) between the first and last food images sent, weekend, and female. CONCLUSIONS: The results of this pilot study provide valuable information for understanding the usability of the Recaller smartphone food picture app as well as other similarly designed apps. This study provides a model for assisting nutrition educators in their collection of food intake information by using tools available on smartphones. This innovative approach has the potential to improve recall of foods eaten and monitoring of dietary intake in nutritional studies.

ABSTRACT

Diet is a major lifestyle-related risk factor of various chronic diseases. Dietary intake can be assessed by subjective report and objective observation. Subjective assessment is possible using open-ended surveys such as dietary recalls or records, or using closed-ended surveys including food frequency questionnaires. Each method has inherent strengths and limitations. Continued efforts to improve the accuracy of dietary intake assessment and enhance its feasibility in epidemiological studies have been made. This article reviews common dietary assessment methods and their feasibility in epidemiological studies.

Objective To analyze and compare the differences in application of 24-hour dietary recall and dietary balance index (DBI) in dietary survey and evaluation of patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus,meanwhile investigate their nutrition status.Method This was a cross-sectional study.A total of 100 type 2 diabetes inpatients at the age of 19-59 were recruited from Shanghai Jiaotong University Affiliated Sixth People's Hospital from December 2013 to February 2014.They were surveyed and evaluated by 24-hour dietary recall and DBI respectively.Result The micronutrient intake in patients with type 2 diabetes was not sufficient.Compared with RNI,the intake of vitamin B1,B2,and calcium was less than 50%.The average of DBI lower bound score (DBI-LBS) of the 100 patients was 32.1±6.1,65%; the patients were in moderate or severe deficit of food intake.DBI higher bound score (DBI-HBS) was 4.4±2.8.No significant excess intake problem was found.Dietary quality distance was 36.4±6.9.Eighty-seven percent of them had a dietary patterns of mode B.Conclusion Dietary patterns in type 2 diabetes patients were not reasonable.Nutrition education and nutrition intervention for type 2 diabetes should be emphasized.The two methods can be used to evaluate dietary quality independently,but it would be better to evaluate the quality of the patients' diet using two dietary survey methods together.

Avaliar o consumo energético e a adequação da dieta de crianças frequentadoras de berçários de creches públicas e filantrópicas no município de São Paulo. MÉTODOS: Estudo transversal em 16 berçários, frequentados por 236 crianças com idades entre 12 e 29 meses. A coleta dos dados foi realizada pelo método de pesagem direta durante três dias não consecutivos. Para o cálculo nutricional, foi utilizado o software DietWin Profissional 2.0®, sendo posteriormente calculada a adequação do consumo de energia, proteína, ferro, vitamina A e vitamina C. Para o cálculo de proteína, ferro, vitamina A e C, foi utilizada como referência a necessidade média estimada (Estimated Average Requiremen) do National Research Council (2002). O cálcio foi avaliado pela ingestão adequada (Adequate Intake, 1999). A avaliação da ingestão de energia foi realizada com base na necessidade energética estimada (Estimated Energy Requirement, 2002). Os dados foram analisados no programa Epi-Info 2000, versão 3.4.3. RESULTADOS: Foram identificados déficits médios para energia (49,78 por cento), ferro (81,67 por cento), cálcio (57,44 por cento), excessos de proteína (183,27 por cento) e vitaminas A (126,86 por cento) e C (57,44 por cento). A distribuição dos percentuais de adequação dos macronutrientes mostrou-se inadequada para lipídeos. CONCLUSÕES: Embora os cardápios servidos em creches sejam planejados por nutricionistas, os resultados apontam possíveis falhas no processo da alimentação infantil relacionadas à preparação, porcionamento e/ou práticas de oferta dos alimentos. Tais achados reforçam a necessidade de ações de educação e supervisão em saúde para garantir o fornecimento de alimentação adequada a este grupo populacional.


To evaluate the energy intake and dietary adequacy of children attending nurseries of public and not-for-profit daycare centers in the city of São Paulo, Brazil. METHODS: Cross-sectional study conducted at 16 nurseries, attended by 236 children between the ages of 12 and 29 months. Data collection was carried out by the direct weighing method over three nonconsecutive days. The DietWin® 2.0 Professional software was used for nutritional calculations. The adequacy of energy, protein, iron, vitamin A and vitamin C intake was calculated, also with the aforementioned software, using 2002 National Research Council Estimated Average Requirements as a reference. Adequate Intake (1999) was used as the reference for calcium intake, and Estimated Energy Requirements (2002), for evaluation of energy intake. Data were analyzed using the Epi-Info 3.4.3 software. RESULTS: We identified deficiencies in energy, iron, and calcium intake (mean deficits of 49.78 percent, 81.67 percent, and 57.44 percent respectively), as well as excessive intake of protein (183.27 percent) and vitamins A and C (126.86 percent and 57.44 percent respectively). Regarding macronutrients, fat intake was also found to be inadequate. CONCLUSIONS: Although the meals served at public daycare centers in Brazil are planned by dietitians, the findings of this study reveal potential flaws in the way food is prepared, portioned, and offered to children. These results demonstrate the need for further recycling and ongoing supervision to ensure the provision of adequate levels of food consumption to this population.

CONCLUSIONES: Aunque los menús servidos en guarderías sean planeados por nutricionistas, los resultados apuntan a posibles fallas en el proceso de la alimentación infantil relacionadas a la preparación, proporcionamiento y/o prácticas de oferta de los alimentos. Tales hallazgos refuerzan la necesidad de acciones de educación y supervisión en salud para garantizar el suministro de alimentación adecuada a este grupo poblacional.

Objective To evaluate the factors influencing the reproducibility and validity of food group intakes measured by a food frequency questionnaire (FFQ) for Chinese men. Methods A total of 214 adult men were randomly selected from the Shanghai Men Health Study (SMHS), an ongoing cohort study conducted in urban Shanghai. Each subject who had completed the first FFQ survey at recruitment took 24-hour dietary recall (24-HDR) surveys which were conducted once a month for 12 consecutive months and a second FFQ at the end of the study. Two FFQs were administered approximately 1.2 years apart. The food items listed in FFQ and obtained from 24-HDR were categorized into 11 food groups. The factors influencing the reproducibility of the FFQ was assessed by comparing the Pearson correlation of intake levels from the two FFQs, while the factors influencing the validity was evaluated by comparing intake levels from the second FFQ with the multiple 24-HDRs. Results A total of 195 men completed all 12 times of 24-HDR and twice FFQ surveys. The median Pearson correlation coefficients of the food groups between the two FFQs in older vs younger age group were 0.62 vs 0.50;in higher vs lower education level group were 0.58 vs 0.50;in higher vs lower income group were 0.51 vs 0.50;in higher vs lower BMI group were 0.50 vs 0.49. The median Pearson correlation coefficients of the food groups between the second FFQ and 24-HDRs in older vs younger age group were 0.61 vs 0.45;in higher vs lower education level group were 0.49 vs 0.47;in higher vs lower income group were 0.43 vs 0.57;in higher vs lower BMI group were 0.48 vs 0.51. Conclusions Age is the main factor influencing the reproducibility of the food group intakes by a FFQ used in the SMHS, while the factors influencing the validity are age and family income.

ABSTRACT

This survey was carried out to obtain the information concerning nutritional status, including factors of food habits and nutrient intake of the long-lived elderly men and women living in Ganghwa-gun. In order to assess the quality of dietary intake among the elderly, a survey was conducted during December 2003 of 103 subjects who were over 85 years of age. Dietary nutrient intake data were obtained through the 24 hr recall method. Chi-square test and t-test were the main data analysis method. Their dietary habits such as three meals a day and a regular meal time have shown that they have generally good eating habits. Average daily calorie intake (% RDA) was 1233.2 kcal (68.8%) for male and 1215.8 kcal (75.8%) for female which were lower than the Recommended Dietary Allowances (RDA) for Koreans. Energy intake of females got closer to RDA than that of male. Protein intake was 49.3 g for male and 46.9 g for female (which was 82.3% RDA for male and 85.1% RDA for female) for elderly person, the proportion of animal protein to total protein intake were 45.2% for male and 39.0% for female. Average CPF ratio of energy intake for both male and female were 68.7 : 16.1 : 15.2 and 69.6 : 15.4 : 15.0. SFA : MUFA : PUFA ratio of the subject was 0.78 : 1.03 : 1.00 for male and 0.64 : 0.92 : 1.00 for female. Calcium intakes for both males and females were 321.3 mg and 377.2 mg. Vitamin A was the nutrient found to be least sufficient. Mean daily intakes of most of the vitamins and minerals for both males and females were lower than RDA except vitamin C and Zn for female, especially % RDAs of vitamin A, Ca for male and vitamin A for females were less than 50% of RDA. In conclusion, long-lived elderly in Ganghwa areas did not consume enough nutrients quantitatively as well as qualitatively, especially Ca, Fe, vitamin A, vitamin B2 and vitamin E. These results suggest that nutritional guidelines for older Koreans should focus on the maintenance of adequate energy intake. In addition, selection of foods with high protein and calcium, such as dairy food, should be emphasized, particularly in the long-lived elderly.

ABSTRACT

This study was carried out to assess the food habit index of the long-lived elderly who were aged over 85 years living in Ganghwa-gun. A survey was conducted during December 2003. Dietary nutrient intake data was obtained through the 24-hr recall method. The subjects were 96 (32 males, 64 females) aged people and divided into three groups based on food habit index scores. Such as group A: good 16~20, group B: fair 11~15, and group C: poor 5~10. The three groups of the subjects were 90.7 years of age and 21.3 kg/m2 of BMI on average. Healthy eating index scores of the subjects were 9.4% in group A, 54.2% in group B and 36.5% in group C. Their level of education were lower and their levels of living standards tended to have been middle and lower of the middle class. The percentage of living together with their families or spouses in all groups were over 60.0% and the rates of the subjects who have responsibility for their meal preparations were also very high in all groups. Most subjects tended not to drirk nor smoke, and spend 8~10 hours for their sleep. The percent of number of diseases in group A was lower than in groups B and C. Their dietary habits such as taking three meals a day regularly have shown that they have good eating habit in general. There was a positive correlation between the eating behaviors and nutrient intakes. The protein, animal protein, fat, PUFA, vitamin E, vitamin B2, niacin, P and K intaks in group A were significantly higher than that of the groups B and C. For group A of good food habits aged had no sufficient intake of Ca and vitamin A than the Korean RDA and long-lived elderly of group C in Ganghwa areas had worse nutrients intakes, especially Ca, vitamin A, vitamin B2 and vitamin E. According to this research having a good eating habits could be considered as increasing of the health and nutritional status.

ABSTRACT

This study examined the reproducibility of nutrient intakes estimated by the 24-hour recall method in a prospective cohort study (Longitudinal study of aging and health monitoring of Korean elderly) of middle-aged volunteer subjects (42 males and 49 females) in the Seoul area. The three-day 24-hour recall was administered twice at an interval of approximately 6 months. The first data were collected and a corrective procedure was performed by interviewing of the subjects and a trained dietitian. The second data were collected by mail from the subjects without the performance of any corrective procedure. The mean age of the subjects was 53.5+/-9.6 for the males and 52.2+/-8.9 for the females. The subjects who had above college education were 95% in the case of the males and 60% in the case of the females. The characteristics of the male subjects in this study were that they were highly educated and held professional jobs and were from the middle or upper class. Comparing the first and second 24-hour recall data, the second data showed relatively lower intakes of all nutrients, except vitamin A, vitamin Bi and cholesterol. There was no difference in the nutrients of the first and the second data with respect to vitamin A, vitamin B1 and cholesterol in the males and calcium, iron, sodium, vitamin A, vitamin B1, vitamin B2 and cholesterol in the females. This data may indicate that the 24 hour retail method without a dietitian's help may result in lower reporting of the subject's intakes. The men had a tendency to remember less than the women. Pearson's correlation coefficients with unadjusted nutrient intakes values were ranged from 0.24 to 0.66. When energy intake was adjusted, there was a slight increase (from 0.26 to 0.71). Intra-class correlation coefficients with nutrient-unadjusted values ranged from 0.22 to 0.66, and the energy-adjusted values were ranged from 0.23 to 0.69. The weighted Kappa statistical values ranged from 0.10 to 0.40. On the average,46.3% of the subjects who were found in the lowest quartile of the nutrient intake levels based on the first 24-hour recall, were in the lowest quartile based on the second 24-hour recall. Therefore, there was a low reproducibility between the first and the second 24-hour recall. We should examine the factors influencing low reproducibility. Also, strategies should be developed to maximize the reliability of the assessment, with regard to portion-size training and telephone validation.

ABSTRACT

This study was undertaken to assess nutritional status of the low income elderly residing in Gwangju. Anthropometric data showed that mean height of the subjects was lower than that of Korean Standard Growth data but weight was similar to that standard value. As the subjects became older, their heights and weights were decreased. Body mass index (BMI) in males and females were 22.9 and 24.4 respectively. However, BMI distribution showed that 56% of the elderly females under 75 were underweight. Advancing age conoibutes significant difference in triceps skinfold thickness in females (p<0.001). Total cholesterol level was higher in the elderly females than the males. It was found that a considerable number of subjects had anemia determined by hemoglobin and hematocrit level, which indicated un iron deficiency. Twenty-four hour dietary recall revealed that, except for phosphorus and vitamin C, all the nutrient intakes of the subjects were below 75% of Korean RDA. Surprisingly, vitamin A and riboflavin intakes of the elderly were below 50% of Korean RDA. Energy intakes of the elderly males and females were 58.7% and 59.6% of Korean RDA respectively. Unbalanced energy ratios of carbohydrate, protein and fat were noted in both genders. Nutrient intakes of females' were lower than those of males'. Thus, there was a significant gender difference in nutrient intakes. It might be further suggested that an appropriate nutritional program should be developed and implemented to improve the Poor nutritional status of the low income elderly living in cities.
