ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVES@#This study aimed to investigate the feasibility of measuring the soft tissue height of bone cristae around implant by digital method.@*METHODS@#A total of 36 patients with dental implants were selected from the Dental Medicine Center of the First Affiliated Hospital of University of Science and Technology of China (Anhui Provincial Hospital) from August 2022 to December 2022. A total of 43 dental implants were enrolled. All postoperative cone beam CT (CBCT) imaging data and intraoral digital impressions obtained before surgery were immediately obtained by the patients on the day of completion of oral implant surgery and they were imported into oral implant surgery planning software for image fitting. Then, virtual implants of the same specification were placed in the planting area, and the implant position was adjusted to overlap with the implant shadow in the CBCT image. Supracrestal tissue height (STH) was measured at the implant view interface (digital group). During the operation, implant holes were prepared step by step in accordance with the standard preparation method, and implants were implanted. The upper edge of the implant was flushed with the crest of the alveolar ridge. STH was measured by perio-dontal probing (periodontal probe group). Paired t-test was used to compare the STH differences between the digital and periodontal probe groups. Bland-Altman test was used to analyze the consistency of the two methods. Intra-group correlation coefficient (ICC) was used to verify the reliability of the results measured by different surveyors using di-gital methods.@*RESULTS@#No statistical significance was observed in the STH difference between the two methods (P>0.05). Bland-Altman test showed good consistency between the two methods, but the measurement of mandibular posterior teeth showed that the results of periodontal probe were greater than those of digital method. The ICC and 95%CI of the STH results measured digitally by different surveyors are 0.992 (0.986-0.996).@*CONCLUSIONS@#The digital me-thod is in good agreement with the periodontal probe method in measuring the soft tissue height of the bone cristae around the implant.

ABSTRACT

We focused on the traditional processing method which generates the superior quality of Yamato-shakuyaku. First, we assessed the historical literature written around Edo and Meiji period and rediscovered the traditional air drying method still inherited in Nara Prefecture. Then, we gathered and analyzed the data of medicinal plants production in Nara Prefecture among 1938 and 2019, and investigated the decline of local production and experienced agricultural techniques of peony through the transition of its yield. In order to visualize the ancient knowledge of crude drug manufacturers that contributes to the instruction of the skills for supply of seedlings, cultivation, and processing, we settled the meteorological observation devise at the outdoor drying shelf for 3 years, and recorded the real drying environment. When comparing the meteorological data with other cultivating area of peony using the estimated values of Agro-Meteorological Grid Square Data, the climate of Nara Prefecture was with high temperature and low humidity than other areas, and it seems to be quite suitable for air drying with adequate topography. The wind rose calculated by measured values of wind direction and wind speed showed the wind conditions in Nara that west wind was frequent in daytime and wind conditions are mildly but diversely changing. Among other producing areas of peony, the mechanical drying is major, whereas air-drying with low cost utilizing local environment features is still applied in Nara. We revealed the rationality of traditional methodology by digitization of meteorological factors which can be high added value.

ABSTRACT

@#Due to advances in digital technology, intraoral impressions have been increasingly used to fabricate implant restorations because of its simplicity, high efficiency, comfortableness and convenience. In clinical practice, the accuracy of intraoral impressions depends on various factors, including scanner technique, status of dentition and implants, auxiliary devices, materials and environment, which might influence its accuracy and limit its application. When applied to patients missing more teeth, its accuracy may be insufficient. It is suggested that intraoral impressions be used cautiously when there are multiple and far apart implants and that the scan body not be tightened excessively and that maintain appropriate environmental conditions. In this article, we have reviewed recent relevant literature and the factors affecting the accuracy of intraoral impressions for implant restoration.

ABSTRACT

@#With the improvement of computer computing capability and the accumulation of a large amount of medical data, artificial intelligence is gradually being applied in the diagnosis of oral and maxillofacial tumors. Artificial intelligence technology can assist doctors in clinical diagnosis and improve the efficiency of clinical work and the accuracy of diagnosis. In recent years, researchers have focused primarily on the recognition of medical images. The commonly used method is to annotate a large number of images by experts for learning image features by machines. The available literature has been able to utilize artificial intelligence technology to diagnose tumors by analyzing medical images, pathological sections, and tumor photos. The main issues in the current research are uneven labeling data quality, small data size, limited research problems, and single data modalities. These problems need to be solved through the continuous improvement of algorithms and the accumulation of high-quality data. The future direction of artificial intelligence applications should be to integrate medical data from multiple sources, assist doctors in diagnosis, and explore a variety of noninvasive and easy-to-use new methods for the early diagnosis of tumors. This may completely change the existing diagnosis and treatment model of oral and maxillofacial tumors.

ABSTRACT

@#Since the digital impression technique has already been widely used in dental therapy, it has grown into a popular option among implant practitioners. The advantages of the digital impression technique are as follows: better experience for patients during the treatment; less chair-side time consumption; and reliability in making the precise impression. Thus, we reviewed the relevant factors that impact the precision of the digital impression technique and introduced its influence mechanism through an evidence-based method that was based on analyzing in vitro and in vivo literature published within the previous 5 years, with a focus on such considerations as relevant factors to dentists, digital impression systems, patients, and the environment. A review of the literature showed that the main factors that have a large influence on impression precision are imaging techniques and the software for the impression system. However, due to the development of impression systems that are restricted at scientific and technological levels, impression precision is affected by multiple factors, such as scanning techniques, dentist operation proficiency, material and contours of scanbodies, patient conditions, and ambient light. Dentists are advised to scientifically choose the impression system, limit ambient light and adopt direct techniques that could enhance impression precision. In the future, the development of impression systems could reduce the systematic errors, decrease the operating complexity of dentists, and improve impression precision.

ABSTRACT

@#Accurate positioning of brackets is a necessary condition for ideal orthodontic treatment. Traditional bracket bonding technology has certain limitations, such as long operation time and poor accuracy. Indirect bonding technology is a method that bonding brackets on the model through intraoral impression or scanning, and then the brackets are accurately bonded to the tooth crowns using a transfer tray. In this article, the progression of transfer trays and adhesive agents, the application of digital technology in indirect bonding technology, indirect bonding for invisible appliances, and the prospect of this technology are reviewed. The literature review results show that indirect bonding technology can locate the bracket accurately, the operation is simple, the patient’s experience is comfortable, and the clinical efficiency can be significantly improved, the photocurable adhesive is an ideal adhesive for indirect bonding technology. With the development of digital technology, indirect bonding technology will be able to locate the brackets with increasing accuracy, thus achieving the "digital precision movement" of the teeth. The bonding technology of invisible appliance accessories is essentially a type of indirect bonding technology, It requires indirect bonding technology and digital technology to highly fit the needs of computer design accessories for the visual tooth movement and the use of indirect bonding technology to accurately bond accessories, ultimately achieving the desired tooth movement. Indirect bonding technology will play an increasingly important role with the development of digital technology and invisible correction technology.

Objective To evaluate the computer-aided design of digital plating for acetabular fracture of posterior wall associated with hip dislocation. Methods A retrospective study was conducted to analyze the 32 patients who had been admitted for acetabular fracture of posterior wall associated with hip dislocation between June 2012 and August 2016.They were 22 men and 10 women with a mean age of 42.1 years (from 21 to 57 years). They were divided according to the treatment methods into 2 groups:an observational group (n =15) subjected to digital plating and a control group (n =17) subjected to conventional plating. All the patients were treated through the Kocher-Langenbeck approach. For the patients in the observational group,patient-specific digital steel plates were manufactured after simulation of fracture reduction, design of individualized steel plate and simulation of steel plating in the computer software before operation. The 2 groups were compared in terms of operation time, intraoperative bleeding, intraoperative fluoroscopy, hospital stay, fracture reduction and hip joint function at the last follow-up and postoperative complications as well. Results For the observational group, the operation time (73.3 ± 15.2 min) was significantly shorter than that for the control group (93.2 ± 14.7 min),the intraoperative bleeding (254.3 ±63.lmL) and the intraoperative fluoroscopy (2.4 ± 0.7 times) were significantly less than those for the control group (334.6 ±70.3 mL;3.2 ±0.8 times) (P < 0.05).There were no significant difference between the 2 groups in the good to excellent rate of reduction [93.3% (14/15) versus 88.2% (15/17)] (P > 0.05).All the patients were followed up for an average of 28.1 months (from 8 to 48 months). There was no significant difference either between the 2 groups in the modified Merle d'Aubigné-Postel scores at the last follow-up (16.4 ± 1.8 versus 15.8 ± 1.6) (P > 0.05).There was a significant difference between the observational and control groups in the incidence of heterotopic ossification [6.7% (1/1) versus 17.6% (3/17)] (P <0.05).Conclusions In the treatment ofacetabular fracture of posterior wall associated with hip dislocation,computer-aided design of digital plating may have advantages of shorter operation time, less intraoperative blood loss, less intraoperative fluoroscopy and lower incidence of heterotopic ossification.
