ABSTRACT

Background: Hand preference is perhaps the most obvious behavioral asymmetry observed in humans and is related to cerebral dominance. Animal and human studies have shown that cerebral cortex has a definite role in regulation of cardiovascular autonomic activity. Each hemisphere exhibits differential control over dynamics of heart especially the sympathetic activity is controlled by right hemisphere insula in particular. Hence, the present study was conducted to evaluate influence of cerebral dominance (handedness) on cardiovascular responses such as heart rate (HR) and blood pressure (BP) indices to autonomic stressor tests in the left and right hander adolescents. Aims and Objectives: The aim of the study was to evaluate the differences in cardiovascular responses in the left and right handers to autonomic stressor tests. Materials and Methods: The present cross-sectional study was conducted in 35 right and 35 left hander students of age group 16–20 years. Autonomic stressor tests used in the study were handgrip dynamometry and cold pressor test (CPT). Results: The right and left handers had similar baseline values of BP and HR. All the subjects responded to Autonomic function tests by increased BP and HR from baseline. The absolute BP values and change in BP from baseline were significantly higher in the left than right handers both during and after the tests. HR values showed significant differences in peak values during both the tests. Visual analog score was similar during CPT in both groups. Conclusion: The HR and BP responses to autonomic stressor tests are higher in the left handers than right handers supports the fact that the right hemisphere has more influence on sympathetic activity of heart.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT Primary progressive aphasia is a clinical syndrome caused by neurodegeneration of areas and neural networks involved in language, usually in the left hemisphere. The term "crossed aphasia" denotes an acquired language dysfunction caused by a lesion in the ipsilateral hemisphere to the dominant hand. Objective: To describe a case of crossed aphasia in a 60-year-old left-handed patient with a non-fluent variant of primary progressive aphasia diagnosis (age of onset=52), evidenced by a left asymmetry on brain SPECT scan. Methods: Clinical and family history, the Edinburgh Handedness Inventory, Measurement of Functional Activities in Older Adults in the Community, the "Mini-Mental State Examination", the Trail Making Test, the Tower of London, and the Neuropsychological assessment for dementia, and neuroimaging studies were carried out. Results: Neuropsychological assessment showed severe cognitive impairment, especially regarding language. The magnetic resonance imaging showed important signs of cortico-subcortical atrophy, with predominance in the frontal and temporal lobes. The single-photon emission computed tomography scan showed moderate to severe hypoperfusion in the left cerebral hemisphere, including the hippocampus. Conclusion: We described a clinical case of crossed aphasia in a left-handed woman with a non-fluent variant of primary progressive aphasia with asymmetry on brain SPECT, mainly on the left, followed up for seven years.

ABSTRACT

Abstract Even though prejudice towards Bolivian immigrants is one of the main reasons for discrimination in Argentina, there is no valid measure to assess it. The aim of this study was to explore the psychometric properties of the subtle and blatant prejudice towards Bolivian immigrants scale. In addition, we tested correlations with right-wing authoritarianism, social dominance orientation, feelings towards Bolivian immigrants, and ideological self-placement. Data was collected through a convenience sample of 431 undergraduate students from Buenos Aires, with an age range from 18 to 45 years old (38.75% men and 61.25% women). Results showed adequate psychometric properties for the scale. Moreover, significant correlations between subtle and blatant prejudice and the other psychosocial variables tested were found. Implications of these findings are discussed.

ABSTRACT

Objective:To investigate the differences in refractive astigmatism, the anterior corneal surface astigmatism and ocular residual astigmatism between dominant and non-dominant eyes in myopia. Methods:A corss-sectional study was conducted. Two hundred and seventy-six eyes from 138 patients with myopia who were to receive corneal refractive surgery in the Refractive Surgery Center of Tianjin Eye Hospital from January to March 2018 were included.Ocular dominance was assessed with the hole-in-the-card test. The manifest refraction and corneal topography were performed in order to measure the sphericity, spherical equivalent, the astigmatism of anterior corneal surface and total cornea.Vector analysis was used to calculate the value of the ocular residual astigmatism and the components of astigmatism, including J0 and J45 of both the refractive astigmatism and the astigmatism of anterior corneal surface. This study adhered to the Declaration of Helsinki. The study protocol was approved by the Ethics Committee of Tianjin Eye Hospital (No.201909).Results:It was found that 61.6%(85/138) of the subjects was right-eye dominant. There was no significant difference in sphericity and spherical equivalent, J0 and J45 of the refractive astigmatism and the astigmatism of anterior corneal surface between dominant and non-dominant eyes (all at P>0.05). The magnitude of the ocular residual astigmatism of the dominant eye was 0.607(0.451, 0.808)D, which was lower than 0.701(0.497, 0.901)D of the non-dominant eye, showing a statistically significant difference ( Z=-2.52, P=0.01). Conclusions:In the myopic population with no significant difference in the sphericity and spherical equivalent between the dominant and non-dominant eyes, the magnitude of the ocular residual astigmatism of the dominant eye is significantly lower than that of the non-dominant eye, which may play an important role in the ocular dominance formation.

ABSTRACT

Objective:To explore the relative importance of palliative care knowledge, attitude towards palliative care and healthy work environment of emergency care nurses in predicting perceived self-competence in palliative care based on dominance analysis, and to provide empirical evidence for formulating the optimal training course to improve perceived self-competence in palliative care. Methods:Totally 415 emergency care nurses from 22 tertiary hospitals in Hubei province were conducted a cross-sectional survey to complete the general information questionnaire, the Palliative Care Nursing Self-Competence Scale, the Hospice Knowledge Quiz for Nurses, the Frommelt Attitudes Toward Care of the Dying Scale Form B, and the American Association of Critical Care Nurses Healthy Work Environment Assessment Tool from January to March 2021 using convenient sampling method. Dominance analysis was used for statistical analysis. Results:The total score of perceived self-competence in palliative care of 415 emergency care nurses was (225.48 ± 60.61) points, the total score of palliative care knowledge was (12.44 ± 3.83) points, the total score of palliative care attitude was (97.35 ± 9.07) points and the total score of healthy work environment was (72.00 ± 11.99) points. Perceived self-competence in palliative care was positively associated with palliative care knowledge ( r=0.181, P < 0.01), attitude towards palliative care ( r=0.232, P<0.01) and healthy work environment ( r=0.393, P<0.01). Dominance analysis revealed that the healthy work environment, palliative care attitude and palliative care knowledge accounted for 74.15%, 14.97% and 10.88% of the variance of perceived self-competence in palliative care, respectively. Conclusions:The largest degree of prediction for emergency care nurses′ perceived self-competence in palliative care is healthy work environment, attitude next and the third is knowledge. It suggests that promoting a healthy work environment is an important way to improve nurses′ perceived self-competence in palliative care, and improving knowledge level and cultivating positive attitudes also will be better.

ABSTRACT

Acacia mangium (Willd., 1806) (Fabales: Fabaceae) is a fast growing, rustic, pioneer species, with potential to fix nitrogen, and for programs to recover degraded areas. The objective was to evaluate the distribution and the functional diversity of interactions and the K-dominance of arthropod groups on A. mangium saplings. The number of individuals of eleven species of phytophagous insects, three bee species, and fourteen natural enemy species were highest on the adaxial leaf surface of this plant. Abundance, diversity and species richness of phytophagous insects and natural enemies, and abundance and species richness of pollinators were highest on the adaxial A. mangium leaf surface. The distribution of five species of sap-sucking hemipterans and six of protocooperating ants (Hymenoptera), with positive interaction between these groups, and three bee species (Hymenoptera) were aggregated on leaves of A. mangium saplings. Aethalion reticulatum (L.) (Hemiptera: Aethalionidae) and Bemisia sp. (Hemiptera: Aleyrodidae); Brachymyrmex sp. and Camponotus sp. (Hymenoptera: Formicidae); and Trigona spinipes Fabricius (Hymenoptera: Apidae) were the most dominant phytophagous insects, natural enemies, and pollinators, respectively, on A. mangium leaves. Knowledge of preferred leaf surfaces could help integrated pest management programs.

ABSTRACT

Background: Human activities adversely affect the distribution and diversity of zooplankton. They are diverse group of organisms with little or no locomotive ability and quickly respond to changes in their environment. This research was aimed at providing updated information on the distribution and seasonal variation of zooplankton in Great Kwa River. Materials and Methods: Two sampling stations (S1- Obufa Esuk and S2- Esuk Atu) were mapped along the river bank, samples were collected using plankton net of 55祄 mesh size and preserved in 4% formalin. Species were identified using taxonomic keys. Data were analyzed using ecological indices. Results: The results revealed 12 taxa; belonging to 38 species. Tintinnida, Protozoa, Cladocera, Copepoda were 23.1%, 18.5%, 15.4% and 13.3% respectively. The lowest taxonomic groups were Diptera, Foraminitera, Atenatadata and Trichoptera having 1.85% for each order. The highest species was recorded in S2 having 31 species. In both Stations Ascampbelliella acuta was dominance over other species. Shannon-Weiner index (H) were 2.997 and 2.40 in S2 and S1 respectively. The evenness index were 0.576 and 0.547 for S1 and S2 respectively. Margalef,s diversity index were 8.171 and 4.111 for Esuk Atu-S2 and Obufa Esuk-S1 respectively. Zooplankton species were abundant in wet season than dry season. Conclusion: This present study provide updated information on the zooplankton distribution, diversity and seasonal variations of the Great Kwa River. The high dominance of Tintinnida in this study indicates a natural linkage between nano-planktons and macro-planktons in the food webs of the river.

ABSTRACT

(AU)

This study aims to cross-culturally adapt the Social Dominance Orientation Scale (SDO7) for the Brazilian context, propose a reduced version of the instrument, and assess its factor structure and validity evidences. Participants included 1,056 individuals across four different samples collected online. Confirmatory factor analyses indicated the best fit indices for the original four-factor structure, two substantial (Dominance x Anti-Egalitarianism) and two methodological (pro-trait x counter-trait). The substantial factors had Cronbach's alpha values above 0.70 in all samples. Furthermore, both the long and reduced versions of the scale were highly correlated with political self-categorization. Hence, the instrument in its long and reduced versions showed good validity and reliability evidences for the Brazilian context and can be used in future studies. (AU)

(AU)

ABSTRACT

Abstract In the context of the border dispute presented by Peru against Chile in the The Hague Court, this study analyzes the influences of two ideological motivational dimensions: Right-Wing Authoritarianism (RWA) and Social Dominance Orientation (SDO) on a set of intergroup attitudes that involve both nations. To this end, a survey study of 196 Chileans and 223 Peruvians participants was conducted. The instruments used to measure ideology and political attitudes are the following ones: RWA Scale; SDO Scale; Scale of Intergroup attitudes between Chile-Peru and specific questions on interest in the Hague litigation and willingness to fight for one's country. The results show that in the Peruvian case attitudes of belligerence and alert and a greater willingness to fight for the country are better explained by the RWA, while in the Chilean case these same attitudes are explained both by the RWA as well as the SDO. On the other hand, pacificist attitudes are explained inversely by SDO in both countries. These findings support the hypothesis that intergroup dynamics between both countries have been marked by expressed actions of a Chilean expansionism versus a Peruvian vengefulness and suggest that equalitarianism will promote attitudes toward respect and cooperation between both groups, changing the frames of expansionism and vengefulness for one of a culture of peace.

ABSTRACT

An attempt has been made to investigate the personality traits namely neuroticism introversion and dominance among the differently abled persons and compare them in respects to the variables. Among differently abled persons, hearing impaired, visually impaired and orthopedically impaired (individuals having orthopedically defects in upper limbs) persons are taken under consideration. Forty subjects of each category namely hearing impaired, visually impaired and orthopedically impaired students were selected within the age range of twelve to eighteen years for the study. Personality characteristics were measured Burn-Reuter Modi?ed Personality Inventory. The data were analyzed through the statistic of Analysis of Variance (ANOVA). The results indicated that the visually impaired persons were superior in neuroticism and introversion than hearing impaired and orthopedically impaired persons. Again orthopedically impaired persons were superior in neuroticism and introversion than hearing impaired persons. On the other hand, hearing impaired persons had higher score than orthopedically impaired and visually impaired persons in respect to dominance.

ABSTRACT

Objective:To investigate the changes, distribution and influencing factors of ocular dominance after small incision lenticule extraction (SMILE).Methods:A retrospective observational case series study was conducted. One hundred and twelve patients (224 eyes) with an average age of 25.1±5.4 years who underwent SMILE surgery at Tianjin Eye Hospital from November 2017 to February 2018 were enrolled. There were 42 male and 70 female patients. The dominant eye was determined using the hole-in-the-card test before and after the surgery.Subjective and objective refraction and uncorrected visual acuity examination were performed before operation, and 1 day, 1 week, 1 month and 3 months after operation. The subjects were divided into switch group and non-switch group based on whether the dominant eye changed after surgery.Binary logistic regression was used to analyze the main influencing factors of dominant eye switches. This study adhered to the Declaration of Helsinki. The study protocol was approved by the Ethics Committee of Tianjin Eye Hospital (No.201905). Written informed consent was obtained from each patient before any medical examination. Results:There were 18 patients (16.1%) in the switch group including 7 males (38.9%) and 11 females (61.1%), and 94 patients (83.9%) in the non-switch group including 35 males (37.2%) and 59 females (62.8%). No statistically significant difference was found in sex between the two groups ( χ2=0.02, P=0.89). At 1 month and 3 months after the surgery, there was a statistically significant difference in the cylindrical power between the dominant and non-dominant eye ( t=2.31, 1.95; both at P<0.05). Binary logistic regression equation showed that spherical equivalent[odds ratio ( OR)=0.47, 95%confidence interval ( CI): 0.35-0.66]and refractive error difference ( OR=3.04, 95% CI: 2.12-4.36) were significantly related to the eye dominance switches. Conclusions:There were 16.1% of patients having eye dominance switches after SMILE.The dominant eye transfomation is associated with higher spherical equivalent and anisometropia difference before surgery.

ABSTRACT

Dois juízes consultaram as bases Pubmed, BVS, Scopus, Web of Science, PsycINFO e EBSCO.

This article aimed to investigate the presence of the concept authoritarianism and SDO and the variables commonly associated in adolescents, through a systematic review using the PRISMA protocol. Two judges consulted the databases Pubmed, BVS, Scopus, Web of Science, PsycINFO and EBSCO. Of the 278 articles found, 12 articles were selected. Three categories were identified: transgenerationality, cognitive-behavioral characteristics, and socio-political values. The main results suggest that the transmission of authoritarianism and SDO is associated with the relationship established by the parents, with factors such as intelligence and personality and participation in civic and social activities. There was an absence of experimental studies and a predominance of research with a quantitative cross-sectional design. It is important to identify political positions and world views during adolescence.

ABSTRACT

Abstract The main objective of the present study is to establish a comparison between ideology (RWA and SDO), ambivalent sexism and beliefs about sexual violence, in a sample of Peruvian trainee from a police officer school (n = 81) and university students (n = 196). In addition, as a specific objective, it seeks to explore the relationships between the mentioned variables. The results showed significant differences between the groups at the level of the RWA (Right Wing Authoritarianism) ideological variable and the Subordination of women dimension of the Beliefs about Sexual Violence variable. Likewise, the structural model shows that the variables RWA and SDO (Social Dominance Orientation) have an impact on the dimensions of beliefs about sexual violence: Attribution of blame to women, Subordination of women and Exaggeration of women, having as mediators Benevolent and Hostile Sexism. The results show that beliefs about sexual violence in the sample of this study link to sexism and these, in turn, to ideology; however, the routes in which these beliefs are configured vary between police trainee and university students. Higher levels of RWA are observed in police trainee, an ideological indicator that, in this sample, paradoxically tends to be inversely related to sexism and beliefs about sexual violence against women that blame and subordinate them. Regarding the path of social dominance, this also directly relates to both expressions of benevolent and hostile sexism, although with greater predominance with the second, appealing to sex as a structural element on which this ideological component is established.

ABSTRACT

Abstract This study examines the relationships between different kinds of social media use, social dominance orientation and subtle and blatant prejudice towards immigrants. We used a non-random sample of argentines living in either the Autonomous City or the Province of Buenos Aires (n = 134) to conduct correlation and regression analyses to test for associations between the study variables. The results show that there is a positive association between social dominance orientation and prejudice towards immigrants (r = 0.39,p<0.001) and a negative association between social media addiction and opposition to equality (r=-0.30,p<0.05). We found no significant correlations between the social media use variables and prejudice towards immigrants. Multiple linear regression analysis results show that social dominance orientation is the only statistically significant factor that predicts prejudice among the study variables.

ABSTRACT

Abstract Introduction Despite struggling to establish itself as an autonomous profession, occupational therapy remains extensively regulated and controlled by discursive authorities inside and outside the discipline. After overcoming the profession's reformist ideals, the military governance that supported its rapid expansion morphed into civil institutions but both were based on similar grounds: occupational therapists should obey a strict set of rules while disobedience and dissent are consistently repressed or silenced. Objective The objective of this article is to deconstruct dominant (consensual) discourses that shape the status quo in occupational therapy and envision alternative paths for the development of the discipline. Method Drawing on the work of Erich Fromm and Jacques Rancière, we propose a (critical) theoretical analysis of the concepts of disobedience and dissensus as they apply to occupational therapists. Results The concepts of disobedience (Fromm) and dissensus (Rancière) can be used to revisit the consensus shaped by discursive authorities inside and outside occupational therapy and expose the political nature of such processes. We argue that remaining oppressive forces similar to those of a warfare regime persist in regulating occupational therapy practice and knowledge by enacting a form of 'disciplinary propaganda.' Rather than threatening the development of the discipline, disobedience and dissensus constitute critical responses to disrupt dominant discourses and give rise to healthier concepts. Conclusion The use of politically charged terms such as disobedience or dissensus can be seen as controversial and unsettling for a profession like occupational therapy but we believe they are necessary for the future of our discipline.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT Arbuscular mycorrhizae fungi (AMF) are obligate symbionts present in rhizosphere of cocoa plants and their community diversity is modified depending on several factors, such as cadmium (Cd) presence in soil. AMF persistence on Cd natural enriched soils might be an indicator of their tolerance and their potential in biotechnological applications. In this research we characterized local AMF community structure present in cocoa rhizosphere soils with low (B-Cd: 0.1 mg kg-1) and high (A-Cd: 20.9 mg kg-1) natural Cd concentrations. AMF spore identification was carried out using taxonomic keys and their abundance, richness and diversity were determined in original samples and after multiplication process using onion trap cultures. AMF communities were compared using alpha and beta diversity indexes and principal component analysis (PCA). The results indicated that A-Cd presented significative lower values of abundance (21 %), richness (20 %) and diversity (11 %) of AMF morphospecies in comparison with B-Cd. Both AMF communities presented five of seven genera in common, but only four of 23 morphospecies described were found in two communities. Low similarity and turnover were found among AMF communities throughout beta diversity analysis and PCA. Dominance of Diversispora spurca, Rhizoglomus sp. and Claroideoglomus etunicatum in A-Cd suggests that these morphospecies are stress-tolerant and they are potential candidates for the development of mitigation strategies in cocoa plants under Cd stress.
