ABSTRACT

Epilepsy affects 2-4% of the general population, being more common in developing countries, due to the population's poor environment, conditions and quality of life. Treatment of seizures is essential, but just as important is the management of stigma and discrimination. The International Bureau for Epilepsy (IBE), International League Against Epilepsy (ILAE), Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), World Health Organization (WHO) and the various ministries and regional organizations have been working on this problem. This is how the document of the Strategies and Plan of Action on Epilepsy was made, in which one of its four programmatic axes, education at all levels, is very prominent. The Latin American Regional Committee of the IBE (REC-LA), in line with this Strategic Plan, has proposed a first phase to investigate the educational material in epilepsy that exists in Latin America, to be later able to access and share it. The goal is to train and educate both health professionals and the general public, and to help cast light on epilepsy, improving the quality of life of people with epilepsy and their environment. Here is the first exploratory stage of the existing educational material.

ABSTRACT

@#Malnutrition is a common occurrence during cancer treatment among pediatric cancer patients and without proper care, it can bring negative implications. The purpose of this study was to develop a printed educational material titled “Penjagaan Pemakanan untuk Penjaga Kanser Kanak-Kanak” (Nutrition Care for Children with Cancer) to help the caregivers to manage their child in terms of nutrition. The objective of this study was to evaluate caregiver’s knowledge, attitude and practice (KAP) before and after receiving the printed educational material and to evaluate the acceptance of the printed educational material among caregiver. This quantitative study (Quasi-Experiment) was conducted among pediatric oncology caregivers in Institute of Pediatrics Hospital Kuala Lumpur (IPHKL)(n=34) and Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia Medical Center (UKMMC)(n=34). IPHKL served as the experimental group where the caregivers received the developed booklet meanwhile UKMMC served as the control group where the caregivers received a pamphlet published by Institut Kanser Negara titled “Terapi Diet Pesakit Kanser – Kesan Sampingan Rawatan dan Cara Mengatasinya” (Nutrition Care for Cancer – How to Overcome the Side Effects of the Treatment). Results from this study showed that there was a significant increase (p<0.05) for KAP of the caregivers in both groups with a higher increase was seen in the experimental group. The score for KAP in the experimental group was (70 ± 8%) and after receiving the printed educational material, the score significantly increased to (92 ± 10%) which was higher compared to control group where their score before was (70 ± 11%) and increased to (77 ± 10%). For the evaluation of acceptance, there was a significant difference (p<0.05) for the mean score between experimental group (48.85 ± 4.931) and control (42.29 ± 6.834) with t= 4.538. In conclusion, the printed educational material developed from this study was well accepted and has the potential to effectively increase caregivers’ nutritional knowledge of managing the nutritional aspect of pediatric cancer patients during treatment. This could improve their nutritional status for a better clinical outcome.

ABSTRACT

Introduction: Cancer and its treatment have an impact both on the family and on the caregiver of oncology patients on palliative care. As a consequence, several biopsychosocial changes and symptoms including anxiety, fatigue, stress, exhaustion, social isolation and emotional instability are likely to occur. These problems may be associated with changes in the caregiver's routine in the context of caring for oncology patients. The caregiver is often unsure of how to provide them with such care. Guidance is usually given orally in caregiver training, without any printed or online material available. Therefore, there is a chance of reduced comprehension of the information provided, which could then reduce the effectiveness of both hospital and home care as well as the understanding of palliative care. Method: This methodological study followed two steps: first a literature review was conducted and then an educational booklet was prepared for caregivers of oncology patients in palliative care. Results: The use of this educational material aims to favor a more humanized care provided by the caregiver to the patient in palliative care and a more accurate knowledge of the magnitude of the problem. Conclusions: The educational booklet was designed as an instrument that could guide caregivers of oncology patients in palliative care about main symptoms, care procedures and other information with the purpose of softening the final phase of life of those patients. ABSTRACT

Abstract Recent investments in the elderly population show a change in the general way of thinking, which implies the construction of new power dynamics, mainly the biopolitical one. The growing discourse of "active and healthy aging" marks a displacement from the scope of social assistance to that of health, with prevention and promotion actions. In this article, backed by Foucauldian notions on power/knowledge, emphasizing the biopower matter, we put into context some articulations between old age subjectivation processes triggered in a neoliberal scenario, presenting part of an analysis made in a 2013 research, about materials of education and health prevention and promotion directed to the elders. From this, we examine the means through which a governmentality technology - the Elderly Health Handbook, of the Brazilian Ministry of Health - enables normalization practices of the behaviors and meanings concerning health and old age, acting as a power dispositive related to discourses constituted within a given sociohistorical and cultural context.

ABSTRACT

The elaboration of validated educational material can favor the educational process, behavioral changes and, consequently, the improvement of health literacy and other health indicators. The objective of the study was to elaborate and validate an educational booklet aimed at promoting self-care and adopting lifestyles that promote the health and quality of life of people living with HIV/AIDS. This is a methodological study developed in the light of the Cognitive Social Theory of Bandura (1998) and of Literacy in Health, following the methodological assumptions of Doak, Doak and Root (1996). The preparation of the educational material followed two stages: the first refers to planning and the second to writing and production. The first stage included the definition of the target audience and the objectives of the material, as well as the choice of the type of material and selection of the themes. The second stage involved the choice of content and illustrations, the preparation and assembly of the layout and the validation of the booklet by specialists. The educational material was designed for adults living with HIV/AIDS with the goal of promoting health and quality of life. We opted for a printed material constructed from the needs and demands suggested by this population. At this stage, 26 individuals of both sexes, regardless of the stage of HIV infection, participated in the study. The themes selected in the composition of the five volumes of educational material were: food, physical exercise, mental health, treatment, coping, sexuality, desire to have children and rights of those living with HIV/AIDS. The elaboration of the content of each theme was based on the literature and approached through accessible language, with the use of photographs constructed according to each of these themes. In the preparation and assembly of the layout, the web design professional complied with the recommendations for the elaboration of effective educational materials. Validation was performed by 22 multiprofessional judges selected according to the criteria established in the study. Content validation was established from the Level Content Validdity Index greater than 0.8. All items were assessed as relevant by the judges and the average obtained with the aforementioned index was 0.97. In the evaluation of agreement between the judges, the booklet was approved with the first-order agreement coefficient (AC1) of 0.50, which represents moderate agreement. All the modifications suggested by the judges were considered in the final version of this educational booklet, which, validated, can constitute an important resource for health education for adults living with HIV/AIDS. It is believed that this material can provide meaningful health information and thus ease the effects of treatment, foster dialogue and clarification of doubts, allowing patients to understand their health and to make decisions aimed at a better quality of life, besides making possible the improvement of the educative practice of the nurse and the multidisciplinary team

ABSTRACT

Introduction: The object of this thesis is the educational potential of leisure to develop a critical understanding of the ideology around substance/drug use/consumption. A literature review in the context of health services showed that leisure and the playful are perceived as recreation, as well as an activity to fill-in time such. However, most of scientific articles listed functionalist objectives for leisure, which is associated to hooked leisure, concept coined to designate the hegemonic form of capitalist leisure in the area of drugs. Applications for mobile devices and educational games about drugs do not promote discussion about the legal and illegal drug production process; neither approaches the problematic consumption of drugs as a consequence of alienated social relations and the contemporary malaise. Despite the educational potential that games and apps offer, their purposes reinforced conceptions widely criticized in the health area, being associated with prohibitions and war on drugs. Objective: To develop a theoretical and methodological critical proposal to hooked leisure practices in the field of drugs. The Collective Health approach was adopted to understand the problems related to drug consumption as socially determined; as so they are intimately connected to the social totality, expressing themselves as symptoms of conflicts that individuals and social groups face in their daily lives. Method: An action research was carried out with mental health workers through emancipatory workshops, aligned with the epistemology of historical-dialectical materialism. Results: Emancipatory workshops promoted the transformation of everyday representations, as much as it has promoted the identification of the convictions of mental health workers. Among them there were: a traditional conception of chemical addiction, drug education as prevention of drug use and leisure as a therapeutic activity. Those are illusory representations which presume that all drug consumption is a disease. The results indicate the need to create critical practices that challenge the ideology of drug consumption as mental and behavioral sickness. Conclusions: Based on the perspective of Collective Health, the theoretical and methodological framework for leisure articulated in this research proposes the implementation of emancipatory workshops of leisure in health as well as education services, among others that work with the drug consumption theme as a cross-disciplinary approach, as long as it maintains consistency with the theoretical framework that proposes the critique on alienation. This strategy can use play, sports and cultural contents, among others. These features place leisure activities aligned with the purpose of emancipatory educational processes. It is argued that the educational process has emancipatory potential if it is radically participatory; and that the contemporary ways of experiencing nonworking time, which compose the strategies for alleviating contemporary malaise, can be debated. Such debate will certainly bring light to the battle among hegemonic projects in the capital system, which can be potentially strengthening to participants, as it denatures alienation that produce disagreements and frustrations. It is also suggested, as an educational support material, the game Cidade Dorme: representações cotidianas sobre drogas (City Sleeps: everyday representations on drugs), collectively legitimized in this research.

ABSTRACT

Introduction: Urinary incontinence (UI) affects a large contingent of women and is considered one of the new epidemics of the 21st century. Objective: to elaborate an educational material to promote the self-care of women with UI. The specific objectives were to explore the experiences of women with UI; Identify the doubts and needs of these women related to UI; Difficulties and potentialities in facing UI-related problems. Theoretical Framework: The interactionist and dialogical-educational premises of Paulo Freire supported this study. Methodology: An action research (AR) was developed with two groups (G1 and G2) of women with UI. The G1 was composed of 12 women from a hospital of the Unified Health System of the city of Macapá-AP. The G2 by ten women from the private network of the same municipality. The four phases of AR were diagnostic of reality; planning and execution of educational actions; rreparation and validation of educational material, and reflective evaluation. Data related to the diagnosis of reality was obtained through eight focus group sessions (FGs). The educative activities were developed through four workshops with the G1 and G2 and the reflexive evaluation in a single session. The inductive and interpretive analysis of the data generated six categories. The educational material, illustrated with original figures, was based on updated scientific evidence. The draft was submitted to expert assessment and to the appreciation of women. Results: The main items of educational material are: Learn more about UI); How do I find out if I have UI?; Know the three most common types of UI; UI and childbirth; Does UI have a cure? ; Treatments that exist for the woman who has UI; How can UI affect sexual and loving life? Brazilian laws for the health of women; Suggestions from women to improve UI care and treatment. The categories that describe the UI experience are: 1. The urine leaves unintentionally: the process of finding the disease; 2. Various reasons lead to this disease: women's perceptions about the causes of UI; 3. A stigmatizing disease: negative meanings attributed to UI; 4. A disease that causes negative reflexes in daily life: consequences on social life and health; 5. Sexuality and sexual life affected: consequences of UI on the intimate life; 6. Unknown to women and disregarded by professionals: reasons for the late search for UI treatment. Discussion: These categories reaffirmed results from other studies. Women with UI suffer physical and psychological damages, with negative impacts on their quality of life, among others, sexual and social life. Although it is a relevant pathology, the UI is silenced in public health policies, due to several deficiencies, hindering the prevention and promotion of women's health. The deficiencies include failures in healthcare infrastructure, humanized listening and treatment by health professionals. Final considerations: Specific spaces of health education would generate the empowerment of women in search of strategies to promote their health. It is intended that the educational material contributes to the education and health promotion of women with UI.

ABSTRACT

The beliefs of mothers on myths or misconceptions on breastfeeding were found to be influencing their acceptance to exclusively breastfeeding their infants. Therefore, this study was aimed to develop an educational tool in the form of leaflet entitled “Guide on breastfeeding: Facts vs myths.” This study involved three phases; phase I were surveying and needs assessment; phase II was the development of printed educational material and phase III was the process evaluation of the printed educational material by 41 Malay pregnant women. A total number of 41 subjects were involved in phase III through calculation of sample size by using program G*Power and the power of study were 0.8. In phase III, pre-test knowledge questionnaire was given to subjects to assess the level of knowledge on breastfeeding and it was collected immediately once they have completed it. The subjects were given one week to read and understand the leaflet and then answer the post-test knowledge questionnaire and the evaluation form of the leaflet. In phase III, the findings showed that all subjects (100.0%) understood the contents of the leaflet. While 95.1% (n = 39) of subjects felt that pictures were important to increase the attractiveness of the printed educational material and around 75.6% (n = 31) subjects stated that the pictures in the leaflet given were attractive. Majority of subjects (97.0%) had intention to give exclusive breastfeeding for six months to their infants after reading the leaflet. Subjects’ mean percentage knowledge scores increased significantly (p < 0.001) from 83.1 ± 13.1% during pre-test to 94.3 ± 6.7% during post-test with t = 5.58 and large effect size, d = 1.13. In conclusion, the developed printed educational material was rated positively and effective in increasing the level of knowledge on breastfeeding among pregnant mothers. In this regard, designed leaflet can be used as a teaching tool to educate mothers about breastfeeding

ABSTRACT

The abundant computer-based materials for medical education developed in Europe and North America have found limited use in Japan. To remedy this situation, the usefulness of such educational materials for Japanese students should be clearly presented, because issues of language and cost are involved. For detailed evaluation of educational material, collaboration with the developing institution is necessary. Kochi Medical School participated in an international collaborative study proposed by the University of British Columbia to evaluate computer-based educational materials. The study evaluated computer-based educational materials for clinical-skills training (CyberPatient) developed at the University of British Columbia. Fourteen medical educational institutions from six countries participated in the study. Kochi Medical School's portion of the study was successfully performed in December 2001. However, we found four problems related to this collaborative study: dealing with foreign languages in educational materials, establishing rapid communication, flexibly coping with sudden changes in study design, and guaranteeing the coherence of the study design among collaborating institutions.
