ABSTRACT

@#Embryology is a critical subdiscipline in medical education, focusing on human body organ development and providing a foundation for understanding developmental anatomy. However, traditional teaching methods using static 2D graphics in textbooks may hinder students’ comprehension of the complex 3D embryonic growth processes. To address this, multimedia approaches, such as animations, videos, and interactive tools, have been explored for effective embryology education. This scoping review identifies five key elements of successful multimedia teaching in embryology: multimodal integrated instructional content, cognitive load-reduction strategies, cognitive engagement and physical interactivity, learner-controlled multimedia instruction, and development of tacit knowledge. These strategies promote active learning, enhance students’ understanding, and foster critical thinking skills. Future research should focus on evaluating the impact of multimedia approaches on students’ engagement, attitudes, and competency development. Embracing multimedia in embryology education can improve medical students’ clinical understanding and support effective medical practice.

ABSTRACT

Objective:To investigate the effect of flipped classroom teaching based on effective teaching theory in the clinical teaching of otolaryngology and head and neck surgery. Methods:A total of 35 nursing students who received clinical teaching in Department of Otolaryngology and Head and Neck Surgery, Xinhua Hospital Affiliated to Shanghai Jiao Tong University Medical College, from June 2019 to June 2020 were selected as control group, and 35 nursing students who received clinical teaching from July 2020 to July 2021 were selected as study group. The students in the control group received traditional teaching, and those in the observation group received flipped classroom teaching based on effective teaching theory. The two groups were compared in terms of the scores of theoretical knowledge and practical operation after teaching, abilities of self-learning, analysis and problem-solving, innovative thinking, teamwork, and nurse-patient communication before and after treatment, and the degree of satisfaction with teaching among nursing students. SPSS 24.0 was used to perform the t-test and the chi-square test. Results:After teaching, the study group had significantly higher scores of theoretical knowledge and practical operation than the control group (94.24±3.25/94.65±3.41 vs. 89.54±3.36/88.76±3.37, P < 0.05). After teaching, both groups had significant increases in the scores of self-study ability, analysis and problem-solving ability, innovative thinking ability, teamwork ability, and nurse-patient communication ability, and the study group had significantly higher scores of these abilities than the control group ( P < 0.05). The study group had a significantly higher satisfaction rate of teaching than the control group [94.29% (33/35) vs. 71.43% (25/35)]. Conclusion:In the clinical teaching of nursing students in otolaryngology and head and neck surgery, the application of flipped classroom teaching based on effective teaching theory can improve the understanding of theoretical knowledge and practical operation ability, with significant increases in comprehensive ability and degree of satisfaction with teaching, and therefore, it has a good application value.

ABSTRACT

Scientific and humanistic aspects are integral to medicine and they must be bounded and integrated, not to suggest that one is more important than the other, or that they operate separately. In fact, the symbol of the physician, 'Caduceus' properly represents the bonding and intertwining between two forces of knowledge and wisdom or science and humanities, and as seen in the Hippocratic Oath, the humanities and the humanistic aspect of medical profession were important parts of practice thousands of years before medicine learned to use science as a new approach to acquire knowledge. However, the advances in science and technology in the early twenty century have fostered an emphasis on knowledge and technical skills in medical education with a neglect of the traditional humane and interpersonal aspects of the practice of medicine. Due to these concerns, for the last some 30years, there have been many attempts to improve general professional education and promote humanities curricula in medical education such as atruistic attitudes and professional behaviors that those pursuing careers in medicine should possess. This paper briefly reviews current status of teaching medical humanities and social sciences in Korean medical schools, and discusses tasks to be coped with to further improve the medical humanities curriculum in Korea including development of effective teaching and evaluation methods. This paper also emphasizes the importance of the role of the medical education systems such as National Licensing Medical Examination and the Medical School Accreditation System in improving the teaching of medical humanities and social sciences in Korean medical schools.

ABSTRACT

In this article, we describe the use of the home page of “Digestion” for self-learning and review by third-year students of our medical school. A home page should provide an overview of the site for easy navigation and present a briefexplanation of important or difficult terms. The page should minimize previously unseen information but should use multiple colors and animation to keep the student's attention. We propose that a nationwide collection of educational materials be established to avoid copyright problems.
