ABSTRACT

@#Proteases of nematodes play a crucial role in larval molting and, in addition to their active role in egg hatching, proteases are also considered a crucial factor in tissue invasion and connective tissue remodeling. In Toxocara canis, proteases play important roles throughout the complex life cycle. They can degrade components of a model of extracellular matrix, basement membranes and different physiological substrates. In the present study, measurements of the proteolytic activity of the perivitelline fluid (PF) surrounding Toxocara canis embryos at different stages of development, the hatching fluid (HF) surrounding the infective larvae, as well as the excretory secretory (ES) products of the larvae in the culture media were performed. Measurements were made using casein as substrate following the Sigma non-specific protease activity assay. The results showed that enzyme activity increased as the embryo matured. The infective larvae were found to continuously produce proteases in the surrounding HF and ES products after in vitro cultivation indicating that Toxocara canis proteases might be important for the worm in the egg and the host. Optimal enzymatic activity was found at pH 8. Incubation of the antiserum from infected mice with the HF and ES products decreased their proteolytic activities, suggesting that there may be a link between the proteases present in these fluids and the immune response.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT Purpose: To describe a new accessible model of ophthalmological training using chicken eggs. Methods: With the aid of a spherical drill, the external calcified layer and the cuticle of the chicken eggshell were removed in a 2cm diameter circle. Using a video-magnification system, the film was dissected and cut to approximately 1.5 cm diameters. The film was removed and repositioned to make interrupted 12-0 nylon microsutures. The parameters analyzed were: cost, facility of acquisition and handling, time for making the model and the microsutures and number of possible uses. Results: In all simulators, it was possible to carry out separated and equidistant micro-sutures in the egg membrane, without the need for reintervention. Conclusion: The new chicken-egg model for ophthalmic surgery training is low-cost, easy to acquire and handle, and viable for the development of basic microsurgery skills.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT: This study investigated the inclusion of kaolin levels in the diet of brown egg layers at the end of the production cycle. A completely randomized design involved the distribution of 288 brown egg layers into six treatments of eight replications, with six birds per replication. When the birds reached the age of 63 weeks, the feeding of the experimental diets began. Diets differed by the inclusion of increasing levels of kaolin: Control (no additive), and the inclusion of 1%, 2%, 3%, 4%, and 5% kaolin. The performance, egg quality, intestinal morphometry, and excreta moisture were evaluated. The inclusion of kaolin promoted improvement in the jejunum villus height, enabling less feed intake; however, there were no significant differences in egg quality. The excreta moisture decreased linearly as the kaolin level in the diet increased. The inclusion of 5% kaolin in the diet of brown egg layers at the end of the production cycle improved intestinal morphometry and the quality of excreta through a reduction of moisture.

ABSTRACT

Hydatid cyst of spleen is a rare condition compared to hydatid cyst of other organs. It ranges from 0.5-4.0 % of abdominal hydatid cyst. The most common sites for hydatid cyst are the liver (60-70%) and lung (10-40%). The first filter of hydatid cyst is liver followed by lung which acts as a second filter. The other rare sites of hydatid cyst are spleen, thyroid, gall bladder, central nervous system, kidney, psoas muscle and retroperitoneum. Splenic hydatid cyst is uncommon, because cyst embryos are trapped by liver and lungs. In this case report, a 54 year old female admitted with complaint of left upper abdominal pain for 15 days duration with splenomegaly. With relevant investigations patient was diagnosed as isolated hydatid cyst of spleen and underwent open splenectomy. This case presented as a case for its rarity.

ABSTRACT

Objective: To compare the acceptance and efficacy of cereal bait containing different concentrations of poultry egg components in laboratory and poultry farms to control house rat,Rattus rattus Methods: Acceptance of cereal bait containing different concentrations (2%, 5% and 10%) of poultry egg components such as egg shell powder (ESP), egg albumin (EA) and crushed egg shell as bait additives were studied after exposing them to different groups of rats in bi-choice with bait without additive. Behaviour of rats towards cereal bait containing 2% concentration of different egg components was recorded in no-choice conditions through Food Scale Consumption Monitor. In poultry farm predominantly infested with R. rattus, acceptance and efficacy of 2%zinc phosphide bait containing 2% EA and ESP was evaluated. Trap success of single rat traps containing chapatti pieces smeared with 2% EA and 2% ESP was also evaluated in poultry farm.Results:(R. rattus). containing 2% and 5% ESP and all the three concentrations of EA compared to plain bait by female rats and that of baits containing 5% and 10% EA by male rats. In no-choice test, non-significantly higher consumption, number of bouts made and time spent towards bait containing 2% EA was found by rats of both sexes. In poultry farm, acceptance and efficacy of 2% zinc phosphide bait containing 2% EA and ESP was significantly (P<0.05) more than 2% zinc phosphide bait without additive. No significant difference was, however, found in trap success of single rat traps containing chapatti pieces smeared with 2% concentration of EA and ESP placed in the poultry farm. Conclusions:Present data support the use of 2% egg albumin and egg shell powder in cereal bait In bi-choice tests, significantly (P<0.05) higher preference was observed for baits to enhance acceptance and efficacy of 2% zinc phosphide bait against R. rattus. This may further help in checking the spread of rodent borne diseases to animals and humans.

ABSTRACT

Tooth darkening compromised oral aesthetics and bleaching is a conservative and efficient method to reestablish it. The aim of this study was to assess the action of 35% hydrogen peroxide in specimens pigmented with different substances. Twenty fragments obtained from chicken eggshell measuring 0.5 x 0.5 cm were randomly divided into 5 groups (G1, G2, G3, G4 and G5) with 4 specimens each. These were previously photographed and pigmented respectively with coffee, cola-based soft drink, wine, beetroot and tobacco for a 48-hour period. In groups 1, 2 and 3, the specimens were directly immersed respectively into the first three substances. In group 4, beetroot was mixed with water to obtain a solution. In group 5, the specimens were submitted to tobacco smoke by the same period. The groups were again photographed and then submitted to bleaching with 35% hydrogen peroxide and photo-activated by laser for 20 min. After the final photographs, the images were analyzed thorugh Adobe Photoshop CS5 software. It was observed that wine most pigmented the specimens (33.34%), followed by coffee (10.35%), beetroot (9.56%), cola-based soft drink (8.85%) and tobacco (0.61%). The bleaching action was more effective on the specimens of G1 (93.9%) and G2 (91.55%), followed by G3 (71.09%), G4 (62.74%) and G5 (57.38%). It was concluded that the methodology was efficient in comparing the effectiveness of the bleaching agent on the pigments tested. The specimens pigmented with tobacco were those which exhibited the greater resistance to bleaching. Taking into consideration the use of this biological material, further studies are necessary to simulate the effects of many other substances onto tooth enamel

ABSTRACT

In the present era, due to industrial revolution in the developing country like India, the ground water system has been largely polluted, especially with heavy metals like chromium. The removal of such heavy metals from industrial effluents and from wastewater has become a subject of keen interest. This paper deals with the removal of chromium from its aqueous solution using egg shell, a waste material as an adsorbent. Experimental results vividly demonstrate that this extraction method was found to be cheaper, quicker and more efficient than other conventional techniques. The results are interpreted in the light of Loggergren’s model.

ABSTRACT

The experimental infection of Salmonella Enteritidis phagotype 4 (SEpt4) was evaluated in broilers embryos to verify the ability of penetration through eggshell and the effect of albumen inoculation considering embryo mortality, hatchability, and intestinal colonization of hatched chicks. Two trials were conducted using in four treatments each, totaling 200 and 194 fertile eggs of Ross and ISA Label lineages, respectively. Non-sanitized eggs were inoculated on the shell with Salmonella Enteritidis (Treatment 1) or placebo (Treatment 2); and eggs were inoculated in albumen with Salmonella Enteritidis (Treatment 3) or placebo (Treatment 4). Immediately after inoculation, the eggs were incubated and embryo mortality was evaluated after 96, 432, and 528 hours. The results showed that Salmonella Enteritidis inoculated on egg shell remained active there and in shell membranes during all incubation period and migrated to the interior of the eggs; however, it did not affect the incubation parameters. It was observed that Salmonella Enteritidis inoculated in albumen caused late embryo mortality in Ross (17.0 percent) and ISA Label (13.0 percent) lineages, and originated chicks with high frequency of intestinal colonization by Salmonella Enteritidis, being 76.7 percent and 26.7 percent for Ross and ISA Label, respectively.

ABSTRACT

STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective study. OBJECTIVES: To compare the surgical results between anterior-posterior surgery and posterior eggshell procedures in post-traumatic kyphosis with neurologic compromised osteoporotic fracture. SUMMARY OF LITERATURE REVIEW: Combined anterior-posterior surgery is usually recommended in cases of kyphotic deformities with neurologic deficit secondary to osteoporosis. However, it is associated with significant morbidity in elderly patients. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Twenty-six post-traumatic kyphosis with neurologic compromised osteoporotic fracture patients subjected to either anterior-posterior surgery (n=11) or posterior egg-shell procedure (n=15) were analyzed. The average age at the operation was 62.6 years (range: 50-82), male : female ratio was 12 : 14, and the average follow up was 2.9 years (range:2.0-4.9). Preoperative interval from injury to operation was 15.4 months (range: 1-36). Thoracolumbar (T12-L1) fracture was in 20 and lumbar fracture was in 6. RESULTS: There was no significant difference in age, sex, preoperative and postoperative Frankel grade, and preoperative vertebral collapse between two groups(p<0.05). In anterior-posterior group, the mean operation time was 351 minutes with a mean blood loss of 2892 ml, and preoperative kyphosis of 22 degrees was corrected to 11 degrees at latest follow-up with 7 cases of neurologic improvement. In the eggshell group, the mean operative time was 215 minutes with blood loss of 1930 ml, and preoperative kyphosis of 34 degrees was corrected to 8 degrees at latest follow-up with 11 cases of neurologic improvement. Egg-shell group showed significantly less operation time and blood loss with beter kyphosis correction. In anterior-posterior group, postoperative pneumonia was developed in 2 and superficial infection in 1. Distal screw loosening was detected in 4, 2 in anterior-posterior group and 2 in posterior eggshell group. One of them was treated by revision and others were treated by brace more than 6 months. CONCLUSIONS: Posterior eggshell procedure showed a better kyphosis correction with significantly less operation time and blood loss. It is a preferable alternative to anterior-posterior surgery in post-traumatic kyphosis with neurologic compromised osteoporotic fracture.

ABSTRACT

Objective To screen the Schistosoma japonicum female specific expressing genes. Methods{S.japonicum} adult worms were collected from the rabbits’ vein after six-week infection by affusing method. The adult worms were stabilized by RNA-later liquid, the male and female worms were carefully separated with nipper. The high quality total RNA was extracted and mRNA was obtained after purification. Double stranded cDNAs were synthesized after reverse transcription. Female subtractive (female as tester, male as driver) and male subtractive (male as tester, female as driver) cDNA libraries were constructed. The differentially expressed genes were further screened by dot-blot hybridization. The clones were selected and sequenced, which showed apparently higher signals when hybridizing with the female subtracting male probes, than those signals when hybridizing with the male subtracting female probes. The homology of these sequences was searched with BLAST program. The semi-quantitative PCR was applied to test the differential gene expression in female and male adult worms. Result Female subtracting male and male subtracting female cDNA libraries were constructed with SSH technique. After dot-blot hybridization, 50 clones were tested to be the potential female differentially expressed genes and were sequenced. 42 expressing sequence tags (ESTs) were received. After bioinformatics analysis, 17 fragments (about 40
