ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT In this work, a multi-objective model for operational optimization of water distribution systems has been developed in order to achieve hydro energy efficiency. Three objectives were considered: minimizing of leakage, minimizing of pumping energy costs, and maximizing system reliability. The optimization model was conceived by the implementation of a computational routine between a dyhraulic simulator (EPANET) and by genetic algorithms NSGAII and SPEA. The proposed model has been applied to the optimization of a hypothetical water distribution network to generate an optimal set of operational rules. Some solutions obtained by the two algorithms showed that a decrease in pumping energy costs did not necessarily imply in leakage reduction. This means that both objectives can be conflicting in water distribution systems with internal tanks.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT The lack of water is a problem that affects many regions in our planet, specially in very dry places and isles. Experts say that this situation will worsen, and that by 2025 about 1.8 billion people will suffer with water scarcity. Although traditional desalination methods are well-known and implemented alternatives to obtain fresh drinking water, they are not environmentally sustainable, because they are generally supplied by non-renewable fuels, whose combustion intensifies the greenhouse effect, causing disequilibrium to the environment. Another option that has been developed along the years is the desalination by solar energy. Since it is a clean, abundant and renewable type of energy, it is already a good option to isolated regions, whose demand is low or medium. Some technics are shown in this work, which focuses on the humidification-dehumidification desalination method. This technique has shown to be the most efficient one, due to its energy reuse. There is still a long way to go in order to make it viable in large scale, especially in terms of water production, specific energy requirement and specific cost of water production. However, solar desalination by humidification-dehumidification has proven to be a sustainable, promising technic which is reasonably costly and simple to operate. Therefore, the authors encourage more investments in researches in Brazil in the area of solar desalination and use of its rejects, aiming at the production of fresh water in Brazilian regions lacking it.

ABSTRACT

In this paper, consumption of energy by the sensor nodes in Wireless Sensor Nodes (WSNs) is been handled effectively using light weighted tree shaped dynamic routing protocol. The main objective is to improve the network lifetime with higher rate of energy consumption. The proposed network routing protocol is utilized to fix the routing problems related to mobile base stations in infrastructural network. The protocol is designed in such a way that it avoids centralized router or mobile base station to control the entire mobile sensor nodes access. The evaluation of proposed method is tested against various result metrics over conventional energy efficient algorithms. The results prove the effectiveness of proposed algorithm against conventional routing algorithm over WSNs.

ABSTRACT

Abstract Governments and private companies have increased efforts to identify effective actions for improving energy efficiency in manufacturing processes. The objective of this work is to improve the decision-making process by increasing the quality of information related to energy indicators in the food industry. This research involves developing a systematic literature review (SLR) to identify energy efficiency indicators in the food industry, which serve as inputs for a sectoral evaluation based on multicriteria techniques. The SLR identified six criteria evaluated by food industry experts, which form the proposed basis for evaluating the performance of related sectors. These criteria are: benchmarks, key performance indicators, framework, monitoring, ISO 50001, and information communication technologies (ICTs) in sectoral evaluations. The criteria were evaluated by experts using the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP), which prioritizes the most important food industry issues using an evaluation scale. Weights were attributed to each issue and positioned according to the Preference Ranking Organization Method for Enrichment Evaluations (PROMETHEE) to evaluate each sector by the identified criteria. The evaluated criteria are applicable to the three sectors surveyed, with emphasis on the beverage sector. Among the evaluated criteria, ICTs were highlighted by Industry 4.0 as a concern for the food sector.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT In Brazil, water supply systems still present water losses and low energy efficiency. The study aimed to analyze the factors that have influenced the effectiveness of the management of water losses and energy supply systems operated by Empresa Baiana de Águas e Saneamento (Embasa) in metropolitan region of Salvador (RMS). The research and the evaluation of the data allowed us to verify the behavior of the indicators and the results of the implemented programs. The data showed that, despite the programs, water losses remained high, and the energy efficiency actions were more effective. The implemented programs were timely, targeted primarily for technical and operational actions, lacking a more strategic planning for the company. The study concluded that the success of the actions for the efficient use of water and energy necessarily requires the overcoming of partial and focused approaches to technical and operational dimension and to incorporate the notion of complexity, intersectoral and integrated character .

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT: Performance indices can be used as indices of energy use in irrigation systems. Pumping stations (PSs) are elements that require energy for irrigation of rice fields by conventional flood irrigation. Interplay of physical, hydraulic, and electrical parameters generates indices that determine the performance in the diagnosis of PSs, operation, and projects for new sets. In this study, it was proposed and classified performance indices for PSs in rice fields, focusing on the efficient use of energy. The study was carried out through an investigation of 160 PSs in operation, located at the western border of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, which constituted an actual field situation. Next, PSs were optimized in relation to the selection of a piping system, using the lowest total cost, the choice of pump, and motors with better performance for the necessary situation as criteria. Results provided nine indices that classified the performance as "excellent", "very good", "good", "poor", and "very poor", which allowed the assessment of projects and the diagnosis of PSs.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT Light Emitter Diode, more commonly known as LED´s, are semiconductor electronic components that can transform electrical energy into light, unlike conventional lamps. LED has a bipolar component, when polarized, allows the passage of electric current creating light. Modern lamps use LED in their formation, which release less heat, use less energy, and are more economic than incandescent and fluorescent. Besides present more durability than the others, LED lamps do not heat up the environment and their disposals do not attack the environment. The association of environmental and economic advantages makes this technology attractive to consumer, although the cost of acquisition is higher than the other lamps models available in market. The verification of luminous flux and energy efficiency tests were realized in this study, beyond an environmental analysis. The obtained results proved the potential of LED technology due to other analyzed lamps, especially economic and environmental issue as previous studies analyzed.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT

The energy analysis aims to compare the performance between productive units and activities, searching an approach to link the energy with the economic. Objectives is the analysis of the energy produced and consumed during the production process of major crops in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, namely, rice, soybeans and wheat, opposed to the economic results of such activities. The research was exploratory and based on multi-case studies with the use of literature review, laboratory analysis and interviews. To determine the results of energy analyzes were performed energy audits and energy efficiencies and cultural crops, while for the economic results we used the theory of Earned Value. The results demonstrate that the activity of soybean in no-tillage system with crop rotation achieved the highest energy efficiency between 25.58MJ ha-1 and 38.39MJ ha-1, whereas wheat culture showed the lowest efficiency with 3.13MJ ha-1. Regarding the economic performance of crops, soybeans showed the highest economic efficiency 2.47 and wheat the lowest 1.14. It is worth mentioning the significant economic results achieved by the rice crop, expressed by the high added-value obtained per unit area (VAL/ha R$ 3,802.00) due to its high physical productivity. In spite of having positive energy indicators, significant expenses on fertilizer, fuel and pesticides were observed in all properties studied. Thus, we reinforce the importance of the debate on social and environmental sustainability of the systems studied, especially when analyzed from the perspective of energy expenses of non-renewable resources and social problems attributed to workforce.

ABSTRACT

The study aimed to evaluate energy indicators of a new production system of yellow passion fruit in Marília-SP. Analyzed the "inputs" of the biological energy, fossil and industrial and "output" energy in the form of fruits produced per unit area as well as five energy indicators. The input energy amounted 155,810.13MJ ha-1. Chemical fertilizers and pesticides accounted for 71% and 24% of indirect energy industry, respectively. The activity generated per cycle / ha, 587.700.00MJ, and cultural productivity 0.19MJ kg-1. The efficiency culture was 3.77. The cultural energy net totaled 431,889.87MJ ha-1. The energy efficiency (4.17) and energy balance (550,312.91MJ ha-1) was favorable. It was concluded that the direct energy consumption from fossil fuels, even though significant, yet permits the production of the fruit of an environmentally sustainable manner. Chemical fertilizers and pesticides were the most representative of indirect energy industry due to the intensification of fertilization as a means of disease prevention.

Objective To assess the influence of pre-exposure to non-ablating ultrasound on the effect of high intensity focused ultrasound(HIFU)ablation. Methods Forty rabbits with transplanted VX2 tumors on their livers were divided into three pre-exposure groups(60 W,80 W and 100 W)and a control group(O W),with 10 rabbits in each group. Each group was pre-exposed to lower intensity focused ultrasound at the corresponding power. From each group,5 rabbits were randomly selected to be exposed to HIFU on the next day. Each group received 14scans.The rabbits were sacrificed 24 h later to take tissue samples for tfipheny tetrazolium chloride(TTC)staining to measure the amount of coagulative necrosis.Hematoxylin and eosin(HE)staining and succinate dehydrogenase (SDH)were also measured to observe the structure and activation of pre-exposed tumors. Results After HIFU exposure, the ablated volumes increased with pre-exposure acoustic intensity, and all volumes were larger than those in the control group. The ablating efficiency in the 100 W group was the highest. The pre-exposure did not itself ablate tumor tissue, but in the 80 W and 100 W groups the structure and activation of the tissues changed. Those in the 60 W group were not obviously altered. Conclusion Prior exposure to non-ablating ultrasound can highly enhance the efficacy of HIFU ablation.

ABSTRACT

The degree of sustainable rural development in Rural Development District 006, La Antigua, Veracruz, Mexico was compared under an autopoietic view point. During August 2007, 30 subsistence farmers, 20 commercial farmers, and 30 farmers managing operations having both objectives (intermediate to the two extremes) were interviewed. Farmers were selected using three predetermined criteria: level of interaction with institutions, diversity of farm production, and innovation of management practices. The energy efficiency statistical analysis showed differences (P<0.01) among groups, the intermediate group, which are sugar cane growers, was the most efficient (4.62 ± 1.4) than subsistence (2.01 ± 0.7) and commercial operations growers (2.56 ± 0.8). On the other hand, commercial operations growers showed high ecological cognition (3.01 ± 0.1) compared to subsistence (2.65 ± 0.1) and intermediate (2.77 ± 0.1); commercial operations growers were youngest and with higher educational level compared to other groups. The well-being economic index was higher (P<0.01) in the commercial operations growers (1.61 ± 0.1) than in subsistence (1.46 ± 0.09) and intermediate (1.52 ± 0.1). The sustainable agricultural management index was similar between commercial operations (1.46 ± 0.2) and intermediate growers (1.42 ± 0.1). Degree of sustainable rural development, was different (P<0.01) among the three groups, with the intermediate group achieving the most (2.58 ± 0.3), followed by those from commercial operations (2.16 ± 0.2), and subsistence farming (1.85 ± 0.1); this showed the high influence of energy efficiency index. It was found autopoietic process in the three groups; however, none of the socio-cultural reproduction is intended for achieving autopoietic process for sustainability. The subsistence farming group repeat process to survive, the intermediate group reproduced the submission to agroindustry plan, and the commercial operations farmers followed...

ABSTRACT

The feedlot performance of beef cull cows receiving diets without or with monensin (200mg animal-1 day-1), was evaluated. The diet, 48 percent of roughage and 52 percent of concentrated, contained 12.5 percent of crude protein and 2.99Mcal of digestible energy kg-1 of dry matter. The intake of dry matter and digestible energy was reduced 20.9 percent with the presence of monensin in the diet. The reduction in digestible energy intake by the animals fed with monensin affected negatively their performance, causing a decrease of 22.6 percent in their weight gain. With higher food intake and consequently superior performance, the control animals presented higher live weight at slaughter (527.49 vs 498.00kg), being 5.8 percent heavier in relation to the animals fed with monensin. The feed:gain ratio and energy efficiency, were not affected significantly by the presence of monensin in the diet (being the averages 7.78 and 23.24, respectively). The presence of monensin in diet resulted in reductions of dry matter intake and weight gain, however, it did not alter the feed:gain ratio.
