ABSTRACT

The saga of yellow fever has been recounted by several science historians. It is a chronicle of errors, fight for recognition, historical mis-interpretations, and human experiments that would be unacceptable today. But it is also a record of forecasts that would be later confirmed by sound field work and through laboratory and clinical research. It is also an example of the contribution of local native lore to sound scientific discoveries. In this paper we try to demonstrate how we are advancing towards the natural foci of the jungle cycles of a zoonosis, not the reverse.

ABSTRACT

This study evaluated the epizootiological characteristics of equine coital exanthema (ECE) in South Korea. A PCR test was used to determine the equine herpesvirus 3 (EHV-3) release period, excretion by suckling foals, morbidity rate, effect on fertility, and onset of breeding partner after treatment. The morbidity rate of ECE based on clinical symptoms was 8.3% (2/24) for stallions and 10.8% (45/416) for mares, and 29 of 45 (64.4%) animals were positive on the PCR test. Ten (22%) broodmares had symptoms before breeding, while 26 (58%) had symptoms after breeding. Nine (20%) mares had uncertain coverage periods and occurrence times. Suckling foals had no clinical findings and EHV-3 was not detected in their nostrils, although it was detected on teasers. No lesions were observed in the clitoral fossa on broodmares, although EHV-3 was detected by PCR. The period of EHV-3 emission was 22~23, 18~19, 6, and 58 days in stallions, broodmares, teasers, and mares with a mixed E. coli-like infection, respectively. ECE had no negative effects on the breeding capability of stallions and no symptoms were observed in broodmares after recovering from ECE.

ABSTRACT

Horizontal transmission of entomopathogenic fungi plays an important role in the epizootiology, because it is directly associated with the spread of causal agents of insect diseases. In hosts with restricted mobility, the presence of secondary pests in the agroecosystem can help in the formation of secondary disease outbreaks and increase the mortality of the target pest. For this purpose, the dissemination of Beauveria bassiana inoculated using tile-type baits was evaluated in a banana plantation infested with Cosmopolites sordidus (Piracicaba) and one with C. sordidus and Metamasius hemipterus (Botucatu). In Piracicaba, insects contaminated with the pathogen were not found in the control group, and infection rates in the plots that received B. bassiana ranged between 8 and 15 percent. In Botucatu, the infection rate of insects in the control reached 17 percent, whereas in the fungal treatment plots, it varied from 28 to 54 percent. The present results demonstrate the influence of M. hemipterus in the dissemination of B. bassiana in populations of C. sordidus, a target pest of this crop.

ABSTRACT

The objective of this study was to determine the prevalence of gastrointestinal parasitic nematodes in sheep at necropsy at a slaughterhouse in Tabasco, Mexico. Adult parasites from gastrointestinal tract were recovered and preserved in formaldehyde for their later counting and identification. Adult nematodes were separated by species and the final count was transformed to Log + 1 to decrease the variance. GLM procedure using SAS statistic program was performed for data analysis. Provenance, sex, physiological status, and sampling month were considered as the variation sources. From a total sample of 242 slaughtered animals necropsied for monitoring gastrointestinal parasites, 57.4% including Nematoda, Trematoda or Cestoda classes. The main identified species corresponded to Haemonchus contortus in the abomasum. Cooperia curticei, Trichostongylus colubriformis, Strongyloides papillosus and Bunostomum trigonocephalum were found in the small intestine and Oesophagostomum columbianum, and Trichuris ovis in the large intestine. Fasciola hepatica and Moniezia expansa were the Trematoda and Cestoda parasites found in liver and small intestine, respectively with prevalence lower than 7%. The average of the total count of adult nematodes in the gastrointestinal tract of the infested animals was 2175 ± 445. Among the factors studied, the slaughter month and the provenance of the animals affected the prevalence of parasite infestation in sheep at slaughter. The main adult parasites found were H. contortus, C. curticei and T. colubriformis with average counts higher than 1009, 813 and 335, respectively.

ABSTRACT

The effects of stage structure and host density on baculovirus horizontal transmission were examined in the laboratory using larvae of the cabbage moth, Mamestra brassicae L. (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae). Insects were reared at three instar combinations and three host densities in closed containers with infected larvae. Insects were observed daily and the number of deaths and time to death were recorded. Levels of virus mortality were marginally higher in the containers where a higher density of hosts was introduced. Larvae appeared to have a greater risk of infection when late instar combinations were used. Final levels of mortality of older larvae were significantly higher than those of younger larvae. Mean times to death of larval populations were longer for larvae at earlier instar combinations, with a faster decrease in survivorship of older larvae over time.

ABSTRACT

The occurrence of the entomopathogenic fungi Metarhizium, Beauveria and Paecilomyces in soybean under till and no-till cultivation systems was studied. The number of colony forming units per g of soil and per cm² of leaf area was determined. Soil under no-till system showed a higher incidence of entomopathogenic fungi, but no difference in fungal density was observed on leaves. Thus the probability of infection for susceptible leaf inhabiting insects should be similar in both systems.
