ABSTRACT

(AU)

Introduction: Cerebral palsy (CP) is a permanent condition caused by a static, multifactorial and non-progressive brain injury of the movements and posture. Equine therapy is a therapeutic and educational method that uses horse to improve the development of people with special needs. Methods: This is a systematic review reviewed by two independent reviewers, according to PRISMA recommendations, in the PubMed and Cochrane Library databases. Including original studies that used equine therapy in patients with cerebral palsy published in Portuguese and in the English language. The PEDro Scale was used to analyze the methodological quality of the studies and the Cochrane Collaboration for bias risk analysis. Results: Five articles published between the years 2012 and 2019 were included. All studies showed satisfactory results in patients with cerebral palsy after treatment with equine therapy, improving gait, balance, tone, symmetry and quality of life whether it was associated with another method. Conclusion: Equine therapy is an effective therapeutic modality in the treatment of children with cerebral palsy, improving motor and neurological deficits, as well as muscle spasticity, favors balance, postural control, reduction of joint deformities and gross motor function. ABSTRACT

Background: A large number of children with disabilities exist, who have special educational needs and a delay in psychomotor development; they are frequently incorporated into student integration programs (SIP), forming part of the regular class and receiving complimentary technical and educational assistance. The health system has historically handled these cases through traditional physical therapy; however, currently, other complementary treatment techniques have arisen that produce benefits in the physical, psychological, cognitive, and social aspects of the child. This study aimed to evaluate the impact of an Equine therapy program on the psychomotor development of SIP students. Methods: A quantitative study with a quasi-experimental design and convenience sampling was conducted. Eighteen students (ten men and eight women) from SIP were obtained to establish a control group (N=9) and an experimental group (N=9). The intervention consisted of an 18-weeks program of equine therapy with two sessions each week. Psychomotor development was assessed before and after the intervention with the “Test de Desarrollo y Aprendizaje” (TADI). Results: There was a significant improvement in psychomotor development (p<0,001) and in the cognitive and motor skills at the end of the intervention (p<0,05), the effect size obtained in the psychomotor development construct and the cognition and motor skills indicators were large (d> 0,8). Conclusion: Statistically significant changes were found in the experimental group comparing the initial and final values after the intervention through many variables. It is then possible to conclude that equine therapy has a moderate to large impact on psychomotor development of SIP students, which was also statistically significant.

ABSTRACT

The following piece drowns into the application of the main ideas and practices of Equine Therapy in senior citizens (55 years old and over). We proceed by performing a literature review of the most updated papers in the field of elderly people’s welfare to verify whether Equine Therapy could result in an acceptable and useful response to the most frequently quoted problems that persons approaching and having reached retirement age usually face. In order to be able o contrast global views on the matter with the local reality, we managed to undertake a small complementary survey to verify whether the predicted patterns by the literature coincide with the popular opinions of the individuals concerned. We have reached the conclusion that Equine Therapy is a potentially beneficial tool to promote and ensure the psycho-physical welfare of senior citizens. Nevertheless, it has not been sufficiently disseminated among this population yet and no initiatives have been undertaken to promote its popularity. One option to promote its use could be by making it easier for citizens from urban areas to gain access to fields where horses can be kept and the discipline can be practiced...
