ABSTRACT

Therapeutic options for incisors affected by Molar Incisor Hypomineralization range from very conservative procedures to those considered to be more invasive. Clinicians must select the appropriate approach, considering the outcomes of the procedures. This case series presents clinical outcomes of five female patients with aesthetic complaints associated with the Molar Incisor Hipomineralization. Macroabrasion, microabrasion and dental vital bleaching were used as combination techniques in three cases. Resin infiltration was indicated for a specific case, considering the oncoming orthodontic treatment. Composite restoration was performed in one patient with posteruptive enamel breakdown. Clinicians must select the appropriate approach according to an individualized evaluation of each case, considering factors such as the patient's expectations, dental age, psychosocial period, the severity of the condition, presence of sensitivity and the presumed aesthetic result of the selected treatment. The advantages and disadvantages of the techniques are presented.

ABSTRACT

Aim: This study aimed to evaluate the prevalence of concern with dental appearance (DA) and associated factors among the elderly of two southern Brazilian cities. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted in the cities of Cruz Alta and Veranópolis, Brazil. Oral health examination and a structured questionnaire were applied. Questions from the PCATool-SB Brasil tool and the Questionnaire about Teeth Appearance, both validated to Brazilian samples, were used. The collected independent variables were: sex, age, ethnicity, education level, marital status, retirement, health problem, use of medication, smoking exposure, alcohol exposure, access to the dentist, toothbrushing frequency, use of dental floss, edentulism, use of and need for dental prosthesis. Concern with DA was dichotomized into yes/no. Associations between dependent and independent variables were assessed by Chi-square or Mann-Whitney tests. Moreover, uni- and multivariate analyses were conducted by Poisson regression with robust variance. Level of significance was established as p<0.05. Results: The prevalence of concern with DA was 18.8% (n=107). The prevalence ratio (PR) of concern with DA decreased 5.8% for each year increase (PR:0.942; 95% confidence interval [95%CI]:0.9110.973). Elderly without access to the dentist in the last 12 months presented 62.5% (p=0.006) higher PR of concern with DA when compared to those with access to dental care. Dentate elderly showed 219% higher PR for concern with DA (PR:2.197; 95%CI:1.3643.539) in comparison to edentulous individuals. Conclusion: Prevalence of concern with DA was low and associated with demographics, access to dental care and edentulism

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT

Aim: This study aimed to investigate the existence of the golden proportion, recurring esthetic dental (RED) proportion and golden percentage between the frontal view widths of the maxillary anterior natural dentition among students of Indian origin by the aid of digital photography. Materials and Methods: This study was conducted with 80 dental students (41 female and 39 male), with ages ranging from 20 to 23 years. Students whose natural smile did not develop any visual tension with regard to the study’s and their own criteria were selected as having an esthetic smile. Photographs were taken, and the mesiodistal widths of six maxillary anterior teeth were measured digitally using software. Once the measurements were recorded three different theories of proportion were applied and statistical analysis was done. Results: The golden proportion, i.e., 62% RED proportion and golden percentage were not observed in the subjects. According to the subjects evaluated, the average width of the maxillary lateral incisor was 72% of the frontal view width of the central incisor. The average width of the canine was 84% of the frontal view width of the lateral incisor. Conclusion: The golden proportion and RED proportion were not observed in the natural smiles of subjects who were deemed to have an esthetic smile. The values proposed for the golden percentage theory were not observed in subjects with an esthetic smile. Average frontal view percentage widths of the maxillary anterior dentition exist and can be useful in predicting naturally occurring widths in smiles deemed to be esthetic in a specific population.

ABSTRACT

The demand for esthetic restorations that mimic natural teeth is increasing, and ceramic materials best reproduce the characteristics of enamel and dentin. Adhesive cementation is considered a critical, complex and sensitive step. A dual-cure resin cement with excellent bonding properties and easy handling was used (RelyX™ Ultimate, 3M ESPE), associated with an universal adhesive system (Single Bond™ Universal, 3M ESPE). This adhesive system is user-friendly and acts as a pretreatment agent for all types of restorative material, in addition to have a chemical activator (DCA by 3M ESPE). ABSTRACT

Worshiping what is beautiful is part of the cultural evolution of the human being. For no other reason that attraction for the harmony of shapes and colors creates a balanced and visually pleasing sense in people. These principles also apply to dental restorations, as they are strongly influenced by the media, that dictate prevailing standards of beauty in society. The search for such standards should not drive the profession to invasive or even highly invasive solutions, especially in young patients with healthy dentition. However, conservative treatments such as orthodontic therapy, whitening, microabrasion and composite resin have the potential to correct and optimize these problems, presenting feasibility, efficacy, and predictability, producing long-term benefits to the dentition. The aim of this article is to demonstrate strategies to facilitate the clinical planning and treatment of smile remodelation direct composite resin in order to achieve maximum tooth preservation in such procedures.
